I finally got an official OTA update to Lollipop yesterday from 21.11.23 KitKat.
I now have some questions regarding rooting Lollipop, since I'm a total noob, and some weird stuff I noticed on my phone.
So my questions are the following:
1) Will I still get OTAs if I root without a custom recovery? (assuming it's possible)
2) If I indeed CAN root without a custom recovery, how do I do it?
3) When I go to Regulatory Information, my phone shows "SAR Information for India" (can't provide screenshot, new poster) while my Region and the ROM is from Greece ( it's .reteu ) is that normal, or is some regional setting messed up?

1,2) For OTA you must do a full unroot (it's in the SuperSU settings) and install stock recovery. You will however receive the information that an OTA is available even if you don't. Just don't download it until you reverted to stock.
3) I just can't find that on my phone. Anyway, its just an information about the rate at which energy is absorbed by the human body when exposed to a radio frequency. The limits differ from country to country.
The main differences between the various ROM versions is the language in the initial setup process. For example ,the eu version will start with en-gb, the German version will start with german (and has various german dialects build in), the international one starts with en-us. It doesn't matter which one of the language specific versions you have, you can easily change it.

I found a german site that has the android M beta, i havent tested it, but someone should probably post guide and links for updating to the beta
in short there is also now a B508->B550->803 update. i think its the version from india, but according to my understanding of the german site from google translate, it seems to work in europe as well.
im gonna test it later on today and let you know how it goes. )(

i can now confirm this is working on H60-L04, updated with unlocked bootloader but needed to go back to stock recovery for my B521 install.
i can't remember the policy on posting links here, so i will refrain from this until clarified.
the basic is as always: (usually a backup isnt required, but better safe than sorry)
1. back up your phone to computer(with hi-suite) or SD-card, or use titanium if rooted.
2.restore to stock recovery
3.install update.app(which in this package will downgrade to B507(previous beta)
4.then local restore the update.zip which will install the B803.
(5.) restore backup if needed
experience:
they have removed the option to downscale the screen which might impact battery life. (at least in 5.1.1 the difference between 1080p and 720p was as much as almost 30% or for me charging once a day to two times a day...im really the power user so if you usually have a battery the whole day or two days, then...well...). The battery drained pretty much like normal for me yesterday, but i didnt activate/open all of my 80+ installed apps. (about 20 of them i use on a daily basis, the rest about weekly use).
there is some errors entering recovery mode(when pressing the buttons for entering recovery during startup it tries to install some update, but is unsuccessful and reboots), but i will se if im able to flash CWM recovery later. any battery issues i experience now might be due to unwiped cache.
Android M in general doesnt appear to be a giant leap forward, but i clearly notice that some apps do run a lot better on android M. (especially the google apps and google fit but this is to be expected)
apparently it also appears on my device that some notifications and the "push" functionality they have tried to copy from ios doesnt work as smoothly as i had hoped, but again, this IS a beta, perhaps even an early one.
the only noticeable, or possibly a bigger bug, is a bit more laggy menus and slower animations in MIUI 4.0 compared to the MIUI 3.1 . it just doesnt feel "snappy" when browsing through menus like before.
let me know and i will put together a guide to install this beta! (if you dont know what a BETA version is, dont install it)

I'm an ex IT tech. but don't know that much about smartphone tech. I say that because I'll follow along quickly if people can use metaphors that relate back to PCs. I've used Linux a bit but am not a Linux expert.
I have a Droid 4 with Jelly Bean on it. I'd like to upgrade it to whatever is the most stable later custom version of Android. Do people recommend CyanogenMod 12? Some LineageOS version? Stability and having everything work as much as possible is what's most important to me. Speed would be a bonus, but it not as important as stability/functionality.
I've done the following to prepare for this:
-Taken a screenshot and put it on my PC to keep track of which version of Android I have.
-Downloaded SafeStrap 3.75, but don't know if I have the right version for this phone. Somewhere I saw something about
a special version for the Droid 4.
-I'm not sure which gapps version to download. Will later versions have more apps but be more likely to
have compatibility issues with an older version of Android?
-I know how to get into developer mode
-I know how to get into Fastboot mode
Any help would be appreciated.

see the index for correct safestrap version, 3.75 is latest, but you need the Droid 4 one

GApps are android version specific, opengapps.org are good
I haven't used the Droid 4 much since cm11, it's likely still a good option

On top of that, the link to the SafeStrap is dead, and there are circular links, all of which appear to go that dead link. As well, the page to download the patch to enable the GSM on CDMA Global phones also has dead links.

The link for safe strap is not dead there are two versions. One from stargo and the other is a modified safe strap for unused partitions redone by some one else. As far as for gsm keep looking you'll probully find something. I can't help you with that because I never needed to use but it shouldn't be to hard to do or figure out.
As far as wich rom you want to use just try a few different ones and see wich one you prefer to use as a daily driver.

Hi Shplad,
It all seems a bit overwhelming at first, but there isn't that much to it really. So, if you've got some IT experience, I'm sure you'll be fine. I always use the latest version (out of curiosity), but from what I've read, CM11 is considered pretty stable, but 12 and 13 are good too. And you'll probably find you don't need the GSM patch as it'll just work automatically - I think it was required in CM12 at one point, but that might be fixed now.
You haven't mentioned rooting. If you haven't already done that, you may as well get that done first, and it's covered in the pages that sd_shadow linked to. And I had a quick look at the links to safestrap in the pages that sd_shadow linked to, and they all seemed ok to me (as OGdroidster has just said also). You just need to make sure you've got the one with 'maserati' in the filename.
So, (from memory - could be wrong), you just need to:
- root the phone
- download your chosen rom and gapps
- install safestrap
- in safestrap install file system then boot into recovery mode
- create yourself a slot in the boot options
- make sure your new slot is the active one (it tells you at the top)
- install your chosen rom and gapps in the install section
- reboot
And if you get stuck, you could just ask, and I'm sure someone will answer pretty quickly.

It turns out I could not download the Safestrap because my firewall was blocking some advertising/metric site which was required to go that page. Got it now.
Not sure what the GSM code you refer to is for. Will the upgraded phone with CMxx not work by default on GSM networks, or is something different?

CM11 is KitKat (4.4), CM12 is Lollipop (5), CM13 is Marshmallow (6) and CM14 is Nougat (7).
I was referring to the GSM patch (that you queried above). What I was saying, was that in most versions of CM, GSM automatically works, so you won't need to apply the patch. But if you did have a problem, the links seem to work fine to me.
If I was you, I'd try out a few versions and find which version you prefer, as I don't think anyone will be able to tell you which is 'best'. I would have thought you'd be fine with 11, 12 or 13 though, and because you can have multiple roms installed with safestrap, you could install all 3 if you wanted!

As far as I understand it (which could be totally wrong), 11 and 12 are no longer being developed and will only receive security updates, so from that point of view, I guess they will be more stable. But 13 and 14 will work, but there may be the odd issue here and there (particularly with 14 which is still quite new). You'd have to have a quick scan through the comments to see if there's anything that's like to be a problem for you.
With reagrds to GSM, I should just try it and see if it works to begin with. If it doesn't, then download the patch, reboot, go into safestrap, install the zip then reboot.

If you are going to use a ROM with ART (Lollipop CM12x and above) Do not use CM12. It is old, outdated, and laggy. CM13 (LineageOS 13) provides a superior experience. Once LOS 14.1 becomes official for our devices, I would highly recommend upgrading to it, as it provides superior memory management.

Wow, this is a lot to take in. Thanks. So, I don't quite understand the repercussions. Once I root, does that mean any ROM OS that boots is somewhat more vulnerable, cause it's like being logged on as root in Linux, or does it depend which ROM I'm using or something else?

Okay, I figured out after my last post that root status depends on which ROM you are running, and of course installing a ROM without root status would put you back to unrooted status.
I downloaded Lineage OS 13 and verified the MD5SUM. I rooted the phone using Shadow's video.
Now I want to make an image of my NAND or have some other method of restoring the stock ROM before I install a new ROM. At what stage in the process do I do that and what is the safest tool / method to do that? RSDLite? Adding another ROM slot and using Nandroid backup?

Does that wipe out any upgraded, more modern ROMS that I put on the phone, such as Lineage OS 13? Is it like having multiple partitions or hard drives on a PC?
How safe is the RSDLite procedure? Can someone explain the pros/cons of doing it that way versus (as I understand it) having 2 ROMs on the NAND available? I see a lot of HOWTOs, but very few explanations/diagrams/theory. If I could relate this back to PCs, I'd be able to understand better.

As far as I understand it, and again, this could be wrong, using RSDLite is usually a last resort in the unlikely event that you've completely messed up your phone. You will lose everything, and your phone will back to how it was when you bought it. I've never needed to use RSDLite myself, but from what I've read, it's a pretty reliable way to get your phone working again. As long as you follow all the instructions, and install CM (LOS) 13 into another slot, it's very unlikely that you'll damage your original stock rom and you'll still be able to boot into if ever you need to. Hopefully, someone who knows more about it will comment also...
I got Safestrap 3.75 special version for unused partitions installed. I didn't realize it allows you to make TWRP ROM backups.
I made a backup of the stock ROM. The first time I did that, I got an error stating it couldn't find or access /boot.
Strangely, the second time I tried, it seemed to work fine.
I copied the folder with the stock ROM backup to my PC, just in case. I managed to flash with Lineage OS 13. It booted fine, but I forgot to select the Gapps zip as well. It does not appear to be rooted after bootup.
1. Do I need to reinstall Lineage 13 or is there way to install the apps without reinstalling Lineage?
2. What is the normal state of this ROM? I'm not sure if I have to root Lineage 13. If I don't enable root, will I be unable to run TWRP recovery and add the Gapps zip file and reinstall? I don't want to be stuck with a successful Lineage install and no apps. I'd find another way to install the apps, but I'm guessing you can't without the apps themselves, no?

Okay, I figured out how to install just gapps 5.1-2015-05-23-24 . However, during configuration, I cannot get the phone to connect to gmail via WiFi (I don't have a data plan).
"Validating Server Settings...
Couldn't open connection to server."
I see other people had this in other version of Android. Is this a particular problem in Lineage 13? Any solutions known?
...AAAANDDD Google Play Services has closed.
Hmm...this does not seem very stable at all. Has anyone actually tried Lineage 13 on this phone or was it just a guess that it might work?

Hi. I don't use gapps, and I'm uisng LOS 14 myself. But there's 57 pages of comments for LOS 13, so I think it's fair to say people have tried it! Now you've got it installed, you could post in the LOS 13 thread, and ask people which version of gapps they are using.
P.S. The first post in the Droid 4 LOS 13 thread appears to suggest using OpenGApps and has some details on how to install, or you could read through that thread for other tips.

So, I have an Honor 5C (I’m in Europe, if that’s significant), I’ve been rooted for a while and today I wanted to install a custom ROM. After installing TWRP using the official app, (I tried it with fastboot, but no success) I downloaded the LineageOS 14.1 ROM and tried to install it. This failed, I got error 7 and started googling the cause. No success. Right now I’m just confused with all the different 5C models and apparently different EMUI versions. My questions:
1. How do I know what model I have? (NEM-L21, NEM-L22, NEM-L51 etc.)
2. What’s up with the EMUI versions? I know I had 4.1.2 and never got a notice saying I could update to 5.x, so how are people on those versions?
3. Same for the Android version, I was on marshmallow 6.0 but other people are on nougat?
4. I wiped everything and am unable to boot right now. What ROM must I download to boot again? And is it possible for this to be nougat, instead of marshmallow which I was previously on?

First of all, you shouldn't use the official twrp, because that once partially bricked my phone, and you should have used EliteTWRP for installing the roms, because it required you to back up before some partitions, that official twrp couldn't, also, to answer your first question, you find it out in your phone's settings app, in the About Phone section, but since you didnt look at that before you flashed and deleted everything, I don't know how to figure it out without the settings app, also diffirent region phones get diffirent updates, my dad's honor 6 never got an update out of 4.4.2, but some phones had access to newer versions(not by flashing custom roms), also you should download some dload things i dont remember how to do it, never done that myself, but for that I'm pretty sure you need to know if you're using NEM-L21, NEM-L22, NEM-L51 or something like that
Hi guys, like the title says. I'd like to flash OK Pie onto my old but still working P9 but after so, so much time i have forgotten everything I did to my phone to get to where I currently am. I've been searching for specifics to my situation but the guide to go from EMUI 8 to OK Pie is complicated enough as it is. If I have to factor in the "back to stock" procedure etc I think my brain would explode xD
So I'm looking for any links, guides, personal help or WHATEVER may help me at least get to chinese OREO 9I think I'm capable of taking it from there)
My current setup:
EVA-L09
Build number: EVA-L09C432B378
EMUI version: 5.0
Android: 7.0
My phone is from Latin America, So IIRC I unbranded it, changed it to cust 432 and flashed the latest (stock) firmware which at the time was B378.
I also have TWRP (the latest one) installed. If I got it right, I THINK I need to go back to stock recovery, flash the latest FW and go to Chinese OREO from there before trying to flash OK Pie, right?

In short:

2) Once you will be on EVA-AL10c00b540 Oreo, you have to follow the OK installation guide from the first link.
You will have to install OK Omni Pie for Android 8, not for Android 9 (there is no stock Pie for P9)
If you search for Pie in the given two XDA threads (Search box at top- right on any XDA page), you will find that many people have undergone (and some returned back from OK Pie to stock Oreo) with no problems - but it is important to carefully follow the guides, first for rebranding and installing the Chinese stock Oreo, then to install OK ROM EXACTLY as described on their site (common guide for all OK ROMs and for all Huawei phones when already updated to the stock Oreo)

2) Once you will be on EVA-AL10c00b540 Oreo, you have to follow the OK installation guide from the first link.
You will have to install OK Omni Pie for Android 8, not for Android 9 (there is no stock Pie for P9)
If you search for Pie in the given two XDA threads (Search box at top- right on any XDA page), you will find that many people have undergone (and some returned back from OK Pie to stock Oreo) with no problems - but it is important to carefully follow the guides, first for rebranding and installing the Chinese stock Oreo, then to install OK ROM EXACTLY as described on their site (common guide for all OK ROMs and for all Huawei phones when already updated to the stock Oreo)

Hi, thanks for replying. I'm aware of the PROCEDURE not so sure about the "how to".
Thats why I posted. Your post basically told me what I already knew (and talked about in my post)
What I'm looking for is help going from my current TWRP/STOCK/ROOTED FW. Back to full stock so I can start updating the ORIGINAL FW. I can't find any info on how to go back to stock recovery for instance. Do I need a specific recovery for the FW I'm running? Is it generic? Where do I find it? How do I flash it? Where do I get the stock firmware? (Huawei firmaware finder?) Which one do I flash? Does flashing the stock firmware automatically flashes the stock recovery? Things like that. I appreciate you trying to help but I already read and knew the things you linked to. My issue is, like I said: going back to stock before I can follow any guide to go up to oreo.

If rooted by Magisk, there is Uninstall option in Magisk Manager, it will unroot.
Similarly SuperSU had an Unroot/Unistall option.
In both cases you can flaslh back the stock Boot partition but it is cleaner to unroot by using their Uninstall options.
From TWRP or Fastboot you have to flash stock Recovery (corresponding to your current stock Nougat firmware) to revert back from TWRP
Generally, if you download from FirmwareFinder update.zip corresponding to your current stock Nougat (must be from FullOTA-MF or FullOTA-MF-PV), unzip, then by using Huawei Update Extractor, you can extract Boot.img and Recovery.img that you can flash then from Fastboot or from TWRP to go back to stock Boot and to stock Recovery
Once you go back to stock Boot and Recovery, you can boot to eRecovery (switch off, connect to charger, keep pressing Vol+ and boot by Pow) and choose Download latest firmware and recovery

But in fact, since you already have TWRP, use the HWOTA method from this post to update to c432b504 or b505:

You can do the same with HWOTA7 from the corresponding thread I gave you (before you will go to rebrand to AL10c00b399).
In both cases, you have to download three update*.zip files for eg L09c432b504 (must be FullOTA-MF), rename one or two of them as described in the OP posts (be careful, some people have Windows 10 that hides zip extension and they wrongly rename files to have double zip extension and then HWOTA/HWOTA7 scripts cannot find the file and fail to flash resulting with half-brick), put them to DLOAD file on the SD card and follow the guides

Edit: Should I flash the same FW version Im currently using and then update regularly? To prevent any issues? (Cause i noticed there are some rules as to the version jumps that can be made flashing like this...

It must be the same model and cust, c432, but safer if you also apply the same build number (b387 ?)
Once you are back on stock you should start receiving OTA updates (have WiFi and a valid SIM card). Give it some time but check also manually from Settings / System updates.
As mentioned in my previous post, you can also use eRecovery / Install latest fw and recovery (if OTA coming slow), and there is a similar option in HiSuite. You will probably not need to use HWOTA or HWOTA7 to jump from clean stock b386 up to b50x

Hi again. First of all I would like to thank you agaib for your help. You made the process so much sinpler and quixk for me and I do apprexiate it.
Second, I updated to the latest "original" fw for my c432 phone OTA but then had to modify the HWOTA7 procesa so I could dl and install the latest/latest fw (because it wouldnt even register when searching for it) I used huawei fw finder to verify it and dl.
After that I went to chinese Oreo, flashed the network fixes and installed a TINY OTA update which fixed some sexurity issues apparently (thankfully it went Ok cause I THINK flashing OTA in a "converted" phone is a big nono?)
Anyways, I ended up on omni pie (the latest beta whixh is 5.2 I believe) as going AOSP was the whole point of this endeavor.
So far I'm LOVING it. Its such a refreshing thing not having to deal with all the bs OEMs bake into their roms... But Im experiencing a couple of issues as well. Not sure if its the rom, my phone or the android version (particularly my issue with battery life since I was having issues with the duration way before I updates, actually that was one of my motivations for updating since I read that pie had better battery management)
Anyway, my issues are as follow. Hope you can help (once again)
Battery life SUCKS (like really, it went from bad to terrible... Not sure if stock oreo would make it better, or perhaps omni pie needs some optimizations?)
The camera (huawei one, not sure about the aosp) has issues. Multiple issues. The biggest one being that if I try to go from back to front camera the app locks in a black screen and I have to go into the app, delete data, reboot the phone and relaunch it (and that doesnt fix it everytime)
The last issue is with pop messages from apps and/or settings. Sometimes, when installing and app and/or changing aome setting a white popup shows up with ONLY an OK option. I cant read anything on the popup. Everything is white. Not sure if its an issue with the theme (I changed from default to "hell" or something like that) but it is VERY annoying not knowing what youre agreeing to.
Last but not least I have a question about the stock rexovery, factory reset and flashing new versions of omni (if and wheb they come out)
In one of the steps for flashing omni the guide asks to perfomr a factory reset from the stock rom. Thing is, it doesnt work. I mean, when I confirm the factory reset the process starts and approximately at 15% an exclamation sign appears and the process percentage stops working. I can reboot the system and everything works fine (using the phone to post this actually) but Im left with that feeling of not knowing why something failed... You know what I mean? Is that nornal?(the failure to factory reset, not the feeling ) also, does factory wiping the phone removes root access? Or does it only renove magisk manager?
Also, if I ever wabt to update the rom (not change it mind you, but flash the next beta or stable or whatever they come up with) do I need to flash the stock recovery again? (Currently rooted with magisk) or is it a separate partition? (Sinxe I had to modify the ramdisk and not flash a custom recovery) also, will I need to do the whoooole thing again? (Backup everything, restore tk factory etc etc) or is it just like with lineage for exanple where you could flash and updatr and keep your data untouched?

This small OTA bringing Patch02 over b540 installs even over TWRP (but that was not the case for OTA from eg b535 to b540)
Cannot discuss/compare battery for Omni Pie, since not using Omni
Problem with Camera app does not show on stock Oreo. Even if the app was somehow ported from Huawei, there are maybe problems with integration to Omni.
Various Huawei/Mate models come with different cameras, but there is only one OK Omni ROM (with one Camera app) given to work on all Huawei/Mate models
Btw, somebody else also complained about issues with Camera (and GPS) and decided to go back to stock Oreo.
Similarly, issues you described about black notifications or so must be related to the custom ROM, theme or so.
As a general rule:
- for installing OK ROM, you flash System partition, and nothing else
- you also wipe Data partitiom (containing all your installed apps, incl Magisk Manager, also containing your user settings)
It does not affect any other partition.
Therefore, changes given by NW patch persist - without, you will have (also in that OK ROMs) problems with SIM card(s) and connecting to the network
Also, Magisk, which was flashed to Ramdisk, persists. You must only install Magisk Manager again, because it is user apo, installed to Data partition that was wiped
You must check on the OK side how they advice installing the updates of OK ROMs
(It is questionable if they will get updates any more, since OK team switched to development of ROMs which install over the stock Pie, whereas on P9 you have no stock Pie - only Oreo, and most likely, we will never see stock Pie for P9.
Just check when OK team released last ROM for stock Oreo, and compare with their releases of OK ROMs for stock Pie:

Hence IMO, for updating the OK ROM (if/when it comes), you will again just need to flash its System and to wipe Data (and then to reinstall user apps like Magisk Manager).
Hopefully, you can backup and restore some apps and settings by Titanium.
Whether you don't need to wipe Data for such update - check from the OK support.
