Dump my Note 3?

Hey guys, so I'm sitting on my $150 promo code while I consider dumping my Note 3 for a Moto X. Good idea?
I also have a couple questions. Do the active notifications keep breathing until you attend to them or does it stop breathing after a while? I heavily rely on the notification light on my Note 3 so I hope it keeps breathing.
My other question....I am on at&t. Can I root the phone?

I think you need to ask yourself what dont you like about the Note 3. Also, why not just go and try the phone at any AT&T store?
As for rooting, yes, an AT&T phone can be rooted (I have the AT&T model myself) and yes, the notification keeps breathing until you either a. Unlock the phone, b. read the notification or c. dismiss it

It is very difficult to root. Pretty complicated and not for any but the most experienced, IMO.

Thanks for the input. The size of the Note 3 bugs me a little bit and the horrible wifi reception are my two main reasons. I went and played with the Moto X today and I was digging it.

Its in the original android development. There are two posts. One is for 4.2.2 and the most recent 4.4.
There is a 3rd one but your phone will probably not be on 4.1.
It is not hard.....I don't know squat and was able to nail it. Just follow the instructions to a T and you'll he fine.

My wife has a note and I have an X. My first inclination is to say they are vastly different phones. I assume you are looking at the overall experience and not so much the cost of the phone.
If the losing the larger screen isn't a deal-breaker for you, then it's not a bad move as long as you are OK with what you are giving up. For multimedia, streaming and all the S-pen "jazz" it's a great device, it really is. I tend to think of the X a little more like a workhorse. Day in and day out it just keeps knocking it out of the park for normal, everyday tasks. Lesser specs, yes, but with all the optimizations it is smooth as butter across the board. In all the years I've had smartphones, I've *never* had one I trust to get me through the day until now (I work until midnight some times and don't always have convenient access to a charger).
I think you'll love the notifications on the X. They keep going as long as you have unaddressed notifications. From that screen you can dismiss them, jump straight into the app the notification is from or just unlock the phone. It's fantastic for dealing with a multitude of work emails, or other things like that.

Actually all it needs you to do, is go through all pages in the thread. Every single problem has been addressed. And if that's still too complicated, one can always stay on 4.2.2 (Camera OTA) and use the One Click RockMyMoto

I recently sold my Note 3 to pick up a Moto X. I ended up getting a white TMO 16GB Moto X on Cyber Monday that I've had since last Wed. The primary reason that I wanted to get rid of the Note 3 was the overall size. I'm a pretty big dude (6'5 280) so I've got pretty large hands and it still was too much phone to deal with on a daily basis. My hand would literally start hurting/cramping and having a burning sensation all through my knuckles and that gradually worked it's way down my arm. So I got fed up and decided to get rid of it on Craigslist. I will say that the screen quality, expandable storage and battery life on the N3 are the primary things that I missed initially. What I don't miss is the fire burning in my hand and forearm that I felt everyday using it.
So now that I've had my Moto X for a few days now I can say without any doubt that I made the right decision to switch. The ice storm here in Dallas has afforded me the opportunity to have three solid days of quality time with this awesome phone.
Here are some specific points:
The in hand feel is fantastic and I haven't experienced any discomfort at all. The build quality and fit and finish are top notch as well. The N3 just feels cheap and fragile compared to it. It also has a great weight to it that makes it feel very solid. I'm not scared to drop this phone and have it shatter into a million pieces. Even still I ended up ordering a case for it to preserve its pristine condition.
I will definitely say that the difference in screen resolution isn't nearly as noticeable as I thought that it was going to be. The screen on the Moto X is very sharp an vibrant while being extremely responsive. Very deep blacks and somewhat warm whites. The colors absolutely pop with vivid contrast. I can't complain at all about the screen.
The battery life on the N3 was simply insane. The best screen on time that I ever got was right at 8hrs. It was a beast when it came to battery life. That being said I can pull down 5:30-6hrs screen on time with my Moto X. So I can definitely notice a difference but it's not a deal breaker for me. I can live with the battery life that I'm getting with the Moto X. Plus it charges crazy fast.
Expandable memory is probably the biggest issue that I've had. I opted for the 16GB version with the intent of utilizing the 200GBs of cloud storage that I have at my disposal. I've also stopped keeping music stored on my device and use streaming services like Play Music All Access, Spotify and Google Drive via the Beat app. It's been mostly painless but there was some adjusting initially. I had a 32GB N3 with a 64GB SD which is a ton of local storage. Believe it or not I just had to slightly adjust what apps and games to install instead of just installing everything. It has actually had the added bonus of streamlining and focusing my gaming attention. Now I'm having to play a game and beat it to get to the next one. I tend to try and look at the positive side of things.
Now lets get to the best aspect of the Moto X and that's the Motorola software tweaks onboard. I don't know how I ever lived without Active Notifications. It's such an elegant and logical way to handle notifications that it should just be baked into Android. I love that I can just glance over to see quickly what it is without touching my device. Then if I want to get more info I can just press the icon and it displays more detail. Then if I want to address it just swipe up to jump directly respond to it. Simply fantastic! I also like that if I just want to see the time or use my device it knows that I've picked it up and lights up the Active Notifications screen.
I've only recently started using Moto Assist so I can't comment in depth but I can say that its been very useful thus far.
Always listening is also insanely awesome and more useful than I'd imagined. I've never really used voice controls on a phone before simply because they've never been very intuitive or useful. What the Moto X has to offer is completely different beast all together. I've started using it more lately and its really amazing software to have at your disposal. I love that if I want to do a Google search or play some music or respond to a text I can hands free with there simple words... Ok Google Now.
I know... I know, TL; DR.
Bottom Line:
The Moto X is an amazing device out the box and only continually gets better and more useful the more you use it. I don't miss my Note 3 at all. Not even a little bit and now look back on it and think how I ever went without these features. I highly recommend this device and love that I've already got Kit Kat running on it. It makes me excited to see what's next as far as updates and tweaks are concerned.
I hope this somewhat helps someone who is on the fence.

I moved to the Moto X from the Note 3, no regrets at all. I hated Touchwiz. I do miss the SD slot a bit, but I'll live. The active notifications make up for it though, I freaking love them.

Thanks a lot for the feedback! It's funny because the active notifications are the #1 thing that I'm most excited about.
For some reason I'm a notification junkie. I really rely on them to the point where I won't even consider a phone without at least an led notification light. As a matter of fact, I passed on the HTC One because you simply can barely see that tiny pinhole light that it has.

Thanks a lot for the detailed info! It was very helpful. Yeah I think I'm really ready for a smaller phone that I can use one handed and feels comfortable in the hand.
Like you said, I'm sure I'll miss the battery life of the Note 3, but I will be ok if I can get 4-5 hours of screen on time.
I'm very curious to see if I will miss any of the Touchwiz features or stock apps. I've owned mostly Samsung phones in the past so it will be interesting to see how well or if I will want to adjust.
I am honestly keeping my expectations very realistic and subdued. I am thinking of this as a 30 day test and rental at worst. I checked and I guess California gets a 30 day return policy rather than the normal 14 day policy which is odd, but I will take it lol.
I see 3 possible conclusions here:
1. I love the phone enough to make it a daily driver and dump my Note 3 and probably make a little money in the process since I got the Moto X for $350.
2. I like the phone enough to keep it but I still prefer my Note 3 as my daily driver and keep the Moto X as a backup phone.
3. I like the phone or just think it's ok but can't find a reason to even keep it as a backup and I return it for a full refund.
As you can see it's no risk for me and a win-win situation.

Would you still get the Gear?

as the title says, would you buy again a gear today? or in the end it was an awful choice?

It would be an awful choice if I couldn't use Null ROM. But then on the other hand, all other smart watches currently released have way too limited functionality for what I would like SW to do.
So, stock Gear? Give me my money back.
Null ROM? I keep my gear.

GEAR = Worst + Expensive + To be not called a Gadget....

Yes. Although I did return my Galaxy Gear after Christmas to wait for the Gear 2. I'll be buying the Gear 2 over the Galaxy Gear. I think the watch is handy, especially when the Note 3 is in my pocket. I'm not looking for a toy or something to replace my Note 3, so I am satisfied with stock.

Yes, stock it is expensive crap. Null makes it amazing!
The bottom line is buy old Galaxy Gear for cheap or buy new Gear 2.... and that really depends on your $$$ and if Tizen is as unrestrictive as they are claiming it will be. So either way your good but rooting it is a must, and getting Null on it is key.

I sure would get it again!

I love my gear with null rom as it sits today. If I were in the market to buy a smart watch I would just wait til the NeptunePine is released.

I agree! If the gg 2 is at the right price I may purchase, but the asking price for the gg was too much. I luckily picked mine up for half the price from a mate that got it free with his note 3.

I own the Sony smartwatch 2. It is quite good with the stock. I just purchased the gear 1 at a bargain price in France to test it (60€!) And will root and install null ROM as a start.
From the Galaxy

I would buy it again. Cause it's even cheaper ^^ i have the hope that it will be possible to bring Samsungs Ultrapowersaving mode onto the gear. This is the only concearn i have about it...Batterydrain. Currently it runs on 2 cores 400mHz-1100mHz...still laggy sometimes...which annoyes cause of the clock syncing...
But i like this little thing...
GG2 is a no go with Tizen as long as i am not sure about the possibilities...

In the previous year I had the Sony Smartwatch. After 2 weeks of continuous use, and serious effort to make the best of it, I stopped using it. I was disappointed mostly with the dim display which made it hard to use outside.
Last fall I got the Galaxy Gear, just weeks after it was available. Again, I made a concerted effort to use it and make the most of its functionality. But after a few weeks, again I stopped using it. My disappointment was:
MAJOR FAILINGS
- Bluetooth connection often fails when running outside (wanting to track performance on Runtastic app).
- Buggy (notification of missed calls)
POOR DESIGN
- Not adequately weather proof.
- Short battery life.
- Noisy when taking camera photo.
POOR FUTURE
- Very few third party apps. Evidence of now future apps being developed.
- Don't like that third party apps often use lots of resources on Note-3 phone.
I won't upgrade to the Galaxy Gear 2 either - since I have lots confidence in this type of device (smart watch).

But other smartwatches use android. Devs developing apps for them? or not? In future Smartwatches will a normal thing. if the android smartwatch itself grows. The Galaxy Gear with android grows too...

I hope Tizen fails and they will bring back an Android Gear with the Note 4...Tizen makes this a nogo for me. Because of the compatibility to android...for the moment...

Taizen will and feel like Touchwiz. This way the regular consumer will not notice the engine underneath. The same will likely happen to phones down the road as samsung wants to have control of their own ecosystem. Soon many more apps will appear on the samsung app store that mimics thier android counterpart and the majority of users will not notice they are using tizen, nor will they care as long as they have the 'samsung experience'

I think the Gear is great fun. It's not meant to be a fancy mini phone which I think too many people think it is/should be.
However, I just put Null on last night and either Iäm really missing something or I just don't get it. But. I prefer stock. It's fussy, trying to be a tiny phone which is pointless and it destroys battery. Stock up to 4 day usually 3 days and recharge at 20% or so, Null, less than 1 day, barely touched the watch, 20% after 18 hours. Rubbish! Only thing it has gained for me is the ability to see Facebook messenger (technically, as message received today didn't show) although you can't reply which kinda makes it pointless, and also Gmail, but again can't reply so kinda pointless. Unless reading around, I find something that everyone else is getting excited about Null, iäm flashing stick back. I way prefer the simple look of it too.
So for me, stock GG is great, but buy of eBay or something cause 300 is way too much

Just picked up a GG for £125 in o2, so far quite impressed, not blown away, but by the time I can upgrade (Galaxy note 4,5?), hopefully the third iteration will be kicking about, it's brilliant as a media remote (as beats don't allow for volume up /down etc. ) feedly is fun to.
All in all, yes I think I would by another iteration of the GG.

I love this phone. But you know with every great new device there's something to complain about. So why not just talk about it? Like I would of loved the settings button to be on the bottom rather than pulling down the top bar.

Complaints:
* The M8's screen is almost impossible to see when wearing polarized sunglasses. This problem is only when you hold the phone in portrait mode. In landscape mode it looks fine. This is a common problem with LCD screens, but there are steps HTC could have taken to eliminate it, such as using a 45 degree extinction angle, or using a compensating film.
* Button placement: I do not like M8's button placement. I find it hard to turn the phone on or off without inadvertently pressing one of the volume buttons. I greatly prefer M7's recessed volume rocker to M8's non-recessed rocker.
* THIS MAY BE FIXED WITH THE NEW RADIO FIRMWARE IN THE 1.54 UPDATE: My biggest complaint is the fact that the phone often takes over an hour to connect to LTE even when there is a STRONG signal.

My complaints:
1. The power button being on the top of such a large phone is pretty annoying. I came from the GS3, which had the lovely side power button. This is something that I will get used to though. It'd be nice if they made a gesture to lock the phone too.
2. Since the latest update, my mobile signal has been poor. Where I used to get LTE, I now get 3G only. My wifi signal is fantastic compared to the GS3, but the mobile internet is looking rough. If I don't see improvement, I may need to replace the phone to see if it can get better.
Everything else is just incredible. Even with these complaints, I freaking love this phone!

IDK, I can use call+data on 3/4G, it's just not supposed to be possible on spark, which I don't have in my area

No you can't.
Only way that's possible is if you're on wifi (obviously).

Here are mine, which I'm sure others have mentioned.
1) Size; I actually prefer the size of the M7 over this. It's hard to reach the power button as someone mentioned and the phone is very hard to hold without a case because it's slippery. It almost feels like I'm holding a gigantic EVO LTE. The m7 felt right in my hands. I was surprised because most of the reviews mentioned that it was easier to hold than the m7 due to the curved back. Using it with one hand is pretty tough because I'm so afraid I'm going to drop it.
2) The Gun Metal Gray definitely scratches very easy. I have a small scratch on the back of my phone already and I'm not quite sure how I got it since I baby my phone like my own kid. i was actually going to wait out for the silver version, but with Bestbuy price matching Amazon in conjunction with their $50 instant credit for people who registered their numbers, I felt like I needed to jump on it for $100.
3) Loss of data randomly (never happened on my M7); I understand there is only one antenna and Spark phones rely on CSFB and that it will eventually be fixed.
No other complaints other than those 3. Love the SD Card, Boomsound Speakers, Camera (Yes I do) and the amazing battery life. I no longer have to worry about running out of juice for the entire day.

Ya, you're right I can't do it on this phone, could do it on my old one though

Apparently unlocking the bootloader prevents you from redeeming the Google Drive bonus. I still bought the device so why no freebie?

I've gotten a couple light scratches and I baby my phone. Not sure how I got them. Never had a problem on the back of the m7.

Anyone else's earpiece crackle during a call or when listening to music? I've been through 2 of them that have been that way. Not sure if its supposed to be this way or what. It's not on the bottom speaker, just the top one.

My Observations
I got this phone as a precursor to replace my 5S, if the iPhone 6 doesn't have a 5" screen. I've only had it one day so far my observations are:
The phone takes a long time to load web pages and play youtube videos
The placement of the buttons is a bit awkward.
The Knock feature doesn't work all the time, nor do the swipe to unlock.
I must've gotten a factory defect, the screen is starting to come off in the upper right hand corner where the front camera sits. How that happened? I couldn't tell you.
I have the Sprint Spark Icon in the notification bar (Spark is in Orlando) but the switch between networks is sometimes slow.
Sometimes to get rid of notifications, I have to reboot the phone. Some icons will stay in the notification area even after the app is closed or I clear it.
Coming over from iOS, not being able to quick scroll to the top of a page is frustrating to say the least. The only place that works is in Blinkfeed, which is pretty cool, IMO, thus far.
Twitter apps for Android suck (can't knock the phone for that though.)

I hate the loud beep you get in your ear when ending a call if you're wearing a Bluetooth.

My only gripe is the stupid HTC in a space not used for anything else. If we are dropping capacitive buttons, give us more screen in that spot... not a space for logo.

Got GS6 Active

Just picked up my GS6 Active. I held out due to the smaller battery in the GS6. Coming from a GS2 rooted running pure CM, this thing is filled with bloat. Anyone else get one?
Anyway to root this thing to install TiBkup and freeze the bloat?

Considering it just came out today, I'm going to go out on a limb and say no.

I actually skipped the Active this year on purpose. I Just ended up getting a 64GB S6 and putting it in a case. I came from an AT&T S4 Active (SGH-i537) and was disappointed by how restricted it was and how difficult it was to find support in the development community. I waited to get an S6 until a couple weeks ago, until I was sure it was rootable and flashfire was working.
I also didn't want to give up the fingerprint sensor which was a feature that was very attractive to me on the S6. I am now quite happy. I might not be able to shower with the phone now, but the tradeoffs were too big to get me to consider the Active this time around again.

I'm with you. I much prefer the regular S6 to the Active. I've got a regular S6, gold, 64 GB AT&T model and I love it.

Got one today as well. I believe the kernel is too new to use PingPong Root.

I am actually not that worried about it. I just disabled the apps and done. I'm actually tired of romn' phones and doing all that jazz anymore. If they come out with a one step root I may do that.
I'm more concerned with battery life and don't care about fingerprint scanner. Waterproofing is just a bonus.

It is an awesome phone! I wanted the built in weather proofing, and the larger battery is great so I waited patiently! I did not care that the battery could not be easily swapped out, but I did want to be able to replace it myself when it needed it as well as do other minor repairs. At the very least I did not want to mail the phone off but take it in to a nearby repair center. I cannot find unboxing videos or detailed pictures. Can anyone post some especially of the port on the bottom and back? I was set to get this, but it is my understanding that it is going to require a heat gun to take the back off too just to replace the battery or even replace the charging port door--something I can easily do with the regular s5 model? If I had a Samsung repair center near me like an Apple center, I may have still considered this phone. There is still a small part of me that is still hoping against the odds that this thing is not glued together, but I am told it is. Why could they have not just tucked the sides under the metal flaps to hold the back down better and just screwed it down. They have screws there anyway for looks????
I am still trying to decide on getting this or getting something else like maybe the s5.
I am not sure about being limited to the 32 GB storage either, but I think I could get by with an OTG adapter for special events when I needed to record them. Wish there would have been a 64 GB option.
I also do not like the lack of MHL support as our Internet here is slow and not good for Chromecast.
For anything else I for go for pink, frilly looks (I am a middle-aged mom), but I just wanted a phone that I could use without worrying about day-to-day use. So this phone in an Otterbox (the black or gray it is going to come in) is just fine with me!
Thanks for any information for those who went out and got this. I have the feeling I am going to going with another phone though

Just so you know there is no door on the S6A, all the ports are just open.

I have it too. So far so good. Upgraded from an active 4.

I spent an hour playing with one in the "flagship store" in Boston. I finally decided that I wanted to buy it and the sales guy says oh we only have it in Camo white.. I wanted regular grey. They had 4 display models on the floor. I guess I'll have to order it online..

So I just did an overnight battery test. I have GPS disabled and WiFi set to turn off (more data useage) when it goes to sleep. I have NFC disabled as well as the LED on the front, etc. Overnight for 10 hours the battery dropped 6%. For me that is pretty damn good for a bloated factory image.

So how's the cell signal strength so far? Curious since it's got a different type case as opposed to metal and glass.. Also how's screen look. Solid white background have pink tint?

I see no pink hue, looks solid white to me on a google screen.
If I let this page sit on high brightness, http://jasonfarrell.com/misc/deadpixeltest.php?p=2, I can see either a slight pink tint toward the bottom of the screen or it is me going blind from staring at it.
I don't travel a lot so cell strength seems normal to me.

Have you checked to see where it was assemble (Vietnam, Korea, etc...) and what type of camera sensor it has? Isocell vs Sony? Sorry for the 20 questions just wondering how it compare to regular S6.

I made sure it was made in Korea. How would I find the camera sensor info

Looking into the Idol 4 (cricket)

I'm looking into getting an Idol 4 as an upgrade. I currently have a Samsung Galaxy Light which is just a terrible phone all around lol. This phone spec wise seems like a great deal for the price (currently 149.99). But I don't like buying things without reviews and this phone has almost none. So since some of you have it I was hoping I could get some feedback on how it is. I generally use mine for light gaming, lots of video streaming, social networking and lots of texting, and some web browsing. I wouldn't mind getting into taking more pictures as well since the kids are starting to get bigger. Anything you have to say would be greatly appreciated. Just remember I'm interested in the Idol 4 not the S variant. Thank you in advance!

Honestly this phone is really awesome all around. Gaming is very descent but one thing that I absolutely love about this phone is the sound quality. Literally it is in Surround sound. Only gripe is some of the picture quality and heat using the VR. Other then that it is super fast with great battery life. I went from a Samsung galaxy edge 7 to Alcatel Idol 4 and don't regret it one bit. Just wishing the root was out to make this phone better.

I came from a G3. The G3 was accused of quickly becoming warm, due to the high resolution display but this phone, to me, becomes warm under less stress. Generally a reboot helps ease the struggles and it cools down for the day. My brightness is almost always at less than 50% but my battery life is about an hour of SOT less, I consistently notice that I now have 2gb of RAM and not 3. I can clear all my apps, open chrome with 4 tabs, exit to the home screen and reopen chrome to see it's reloading the entire app. When using Google maps or Waze, it takes about a full second for my touch to register in the app but on screen keys are unaffected. My apps are minimal, not even Facebook but I use Facebook messenger lite, no widgets or abnormal background apps, so I don't feel I'm pushing the device too far.
I list all of these but I honestly feel they're software issues. I've replaced the stock launcher and noticed a huge difference. The biggest selling points are the amazing speakers, solid build quality but invest in tempered glass protector, extremely capable camera, VR headset and near stock. You can disable quite a bit of added and unneeded software and that helps. Once root is achieved I think some simple tweaks will unleash its true abilities but I think I would go with the honor 5x or wait for the 6x. 5x already has a community behind it and I miss rooting.

Are your sure you have the 3gb RAM version and not the 2? I ordered mine from the UK to get the 3gb version. I have no idea where your located, on mobile.
OP, tours sounds like a perfect device for your use. Same reason i bought one for my wife.

Like I said I have the galaxy light. Dual core processor, 8 gigs of onboard storage before the ROM, and only one gig of ram. Ha when I use maps it takes 5 minutes just for the app to open so a second to register won't be a problem. I always use Google now launcher which seems to improve speed most of the time.

I did see that. There is hope though since its still a newish phone. Cricket keeps dropping the price on it so that may lure people in with the specs it has.

There is a lot of dis-information regarding the variants of this phone. A lot of people are saying its wonderful but a lot of posts from people using different versions of it.
That and I noticed that they plan to muddy it even more with a 'mini' version and a 'pro' version.
So it gets even more confusing. The cricket version may or may not have 2gb, but its supposed to have 3gb. The cricket version also has an older Snapdragon 617 which according to the mfg wasn't even used in this phone.
You know what I am thinking? this is a re-balled idol 3.
Correct me if my suspicion is wrong.

I'm not sure on the specs of the idol 3 so I cannot comment on that. I'm getting mine tomorrow from cricket so I will be able to give exact specs of the phone.

Thanks for the offer but I already bought one

I have the Cricket variant of the Alcatel Idol 4. It is the 6055U, which is the 2GB version. I really like the phone with the exception of the vibrate motor. I find it to be very weak. I can't even feel the vibration when the phone is in my front pocket and a call is coming in.
