[Q] Unable to Attach Google Photos in Google Messenger - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

VZW Nexus 6, unlocked, unencrypted, stock rooted 5.1.1 with Wugfresh's NRT. Access point is LTE - Verizon Internet VZWINTERNET. I have AdAway installed, but have had it disabled in order to troubleshoot. I don't use the MOAB host but I whitelisted mms.vtext.com just to be safe. Also tried a couple of different access points to no avail.
While in Messenger if I tap the paperclip to add an attachment, all options except Google Photos work. When I try to attach a photo from Google Photos, the displayed thumbnail is blank and the spinning search indicator goes on indefinitely. If instead I open Google Photos, select a photo to share via Messenger, it works fine.
One other piece of info. After I get tired of watching Messenger endlessly search for a Google photo, I back out, clear recents and go into Google Photos to send that way, but my attempt to attach from Messenger corrupts something in Google Photos, so I have to force stop it to get it to function normally.
I've force stopped, cleared cache and data for both Messenger and Google Photos multiple times, but nothing seems to work.
The only thing that does work is reverting to the factory install of Messenger. If I do that, everything works as it should.
Anybody have this problem?
Thanks.

Try a file explorer (ES is my choice) and click the share button. There should be an option to share it via Google Messenger. That should insert it into the convo. Also make sure your SMS/MMS settings are correct along with the APN. If none of this works, try uninstalling/reinstalling Messenger, and then clearing the cache/dalvik, and try again. Hope this helps.

As stated, all of the options (to include my file explorer--root explorer), recents, dropbox, etc. do work. It's Google Photos that's not working properly. Also keep in mind, that the option to use Google Photos allows me to attach photos from the cloud, which is what I'm unable to do...so a file explorer is not optimal in this case.
SMS/MMS settings have been checked, and as I also stated, I'm using Verizon's preferred APN, but I have also tried others without success.
Although I didn't mention above, is that I have uninstalled and reinstalled both Google Photos and Messenger without success. The only thing that did work was reverting to the factory install of Messenger, but that's not optimal.
Clearing cache and Dalvik is useful so I'll give that a try, but I'm not hopeful.
Are you, or anyone else able to duplicate this problem without reverting to the factory install of Messenger? Thanks.

I had that problem. I never ran completely stock & rooted from the box. But I had similar problems with the stock sms/mms app using custom roms. I finally installed Textra on the advice of others & since then have never experienced a problem, so I never looked back. But others told me it was the stock app which is at fault. Why it works for most & not for some - I got no idea. I also consider Textra to be a step up in many areas vs stock. I use Titanium Backup & freeze the stock app also.

Same problem here with Google Photos but using Themed version of Messenger. Appears to be something related to Google signature key and not able to access Google servers..

Anyone ever get this resolved? I'm experiencing the same. Running Nexus 5 stock, unrooted.

Still not working for me even after updating the factory image to account for Stagefright. During the update I took the opportunity while unrooted to try again (this was after a factory reset)....didn't work. Then rerooted and tried again...still a nogo. Same symptoms as my OP. Here are a couple of shots:

Are you on Verizon?

I just tried switching over to Hangouts...same problem....something's amiss.

AT&T. Everything seemed to work up until a few days ago. Maybe the stagefright update was the cause.

I had it before and after the Stagefright update

Do you have two stage auth enabled with Google authenticator method? Trying to trace back things that changed recently.

Yes I do use 2 step authentication with google.

One more point. I just watched a Galaxy S6 exhibit the same problem. Something must be up on Google's end.

Verizon Backup Assistant error every night

Every night I get a notification from backup assistant that it's unable to connect to the network and will try again in 2 hours.
I would like to uninstall this app but it doesn't look like that's possible without root.
I can't even figure out how to turn it off though or fix the nightly error. There doesn't seem to be any real options for it.
Any ideas?
I didn't have this problem before I performed a factory reset on my phone. After I did a factory reset, the backup assistant insisted I gave it my info. It hijacked my homescreen and is now an always-running app. I get that error every night.
I was thinking maybe a factory reset would fix the phone? That seems like the only option right now.
go to accounts in the phones main menus/settings/accounts and see if you can disable the sync there.

There's no option to disable it. The only think you can do is change the time of day it tries to backup.
I don't even get why they put this on the phone. It looks like all it does is try and backup your contacts which is pointless since they are all already backed up in your google account.
Don't seem to have this issue but you can add it to your task manager auto end list, enable system/core apps in settings and u can see it then add it.
-smc
Edit:
Maybe not, can't add system apps it seems.
Do you use backup assistant? If not, now that you can root, freeze it.
B-)
I did freeze mine after rooting with Ti. Rebooted and no problems.

I've just read we shouldn't be uninstalling/freezing too much stuff until there's a way to recover from a soft brick.
Yes, I've read that too. I tried anyway. No problems (well one, not a show stopper) with the ones I did. Rebooted and everything.
B-)
The thing that stopped working was already mentioned in the rooting thread.
<quote>
I froze that one. I'm not sure if it was the issue but my quick dial contacts would not function.
</quote>
I ran into that too. And believe it or not, it was the Yahoo! Mail Authenticator 2.3.4 that stopped that feature from working.
B-)
The interesting thing about that one is that once you use the quick dial contacts, you can re-freeze YMA until you reboot the phone. So I booted clean, and listed my running apps. Used the quick dial contacts and re-checked running apps. Turns out an app called "Contacts Data" is what requires YMA. I suppose it may not be YMA specifically, It could be that it requires at least one authenticator and I may have disabled them all (accept google mail)
B-)
I've been trying to post directly to that thread, however, it seems I don't have permission (developer thread). Hope whoever was looking see it here.

[HOW-TO] Unlock FB Contact Photos in 3rd Party Apps (Root Required)

I've been seeing a lot of posts from people complaining about how their FB contact photos don't appear in 3rd party apps such as Messaging or Google Voice. I've attached an APK that will alleviate this issue. Root access will be required and should work in both Sense and AOSP ROMs. For more information about the APK, check out the link below.

Did you grant it root access? Try going into SuperSU and resetting the default action for the app. What ROM are you on? I'm using Badboys and it's working fine.
I got it to work, Google and Facebook were syncing my contacts like crazy. Thanks for posting this!

Try rebooting your phone (so that no other apps are accessing your contacts database) and run photo unlocker really quick.

I didn't even notice there was an issue with contact photos until I saw this thread.
Anyway, this didn't work for me, either. I tried the same things, multiple times. No dice.
I decided to install HaxSync instead and now everything is fine. Its a paid app, but works great. I bought it a long time ago for my Moto Photon, when it couldn't sync contact photos with Facebook on CM9.

[Q] Push Notifications not working well?

Hey guys, so I just got the S5 a couple of days ago and I love it. However, I'm having some problems with the push notifications of certain apps not coming through, yet they do easily on my Nexus 7. They weren't a problem on my Nexus 5, but I have no idea why it's not working properly on a brand new phone like the S5. Each of the apps, like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to name a few, are all listed to push notifications and they're set in the main Android settings, so I have no idea. Anyone else have the same kind of issues like me?
To note, I've already factory resetted my phone several times, cleaned out the data, caches, etc and still no use. I am rooted though, but I doubt that should make a huge difference, right? And right now, I'm not using Xposed framework, but before when I first noticed the issues, I was. Thanks in advance!
Taking a longshot here...but have you updated that Samsung Push Service app through the Play Store (and all other apps for that matter)?

if you used Titatium backup to restore any apps that use push, that could be your issue. I restored facebook, instagram , snapchat etc and the push never works when i restore, you need to clear the app out, and just login new for each push app.

Yeah, I did that initially, but that was the first time I got the phone. Now, I've been clearing out the caches and data for each app, uninstalling it and reinstalling it from the Play Store, but still some of the apps don't have the push capability unless I was just in the app or still in it. Some of my problem apps are GroupMe, Snapchat and Instagram. When I had my Nexus 5, that wasn't the issue at all.
Is there anything else I can do to fix this issue?

Check out TB Restore Fixer on the app store. I noticed that when I did Titanium Backup restore, some of my apps were not working correctly and I couldn't reach certain parts of my storage, etc. After I ran it, it seemed to have straightened everything out. (Requires root, of course)
Hope this fixes your problems!
Same problem
I first started having this issue a week ago. I checked all the setting, factory reset, and I ended up switching out the Galaxy 5 through Sprint yesterday. E-mails and FB messenger app was working on data while I was driving home and I thought the problem was fixed. I reinstalled all the apps I was using and over night let the phone charge. When I woke up this morning I noticed two of the folders I made were removed and a widget for S Health replaced the folders spot. Thinking nothing of it I removed the widget and made it to work this morning to find out I had 3 e-mails waiting, a notification on facebook, and another message through FB messenger that did not come through this morning. I am receieving notifications if im on wifi but not through the data now and this is a new phone. I think this may have something to the 4.4.4 release but this is bugging me. Any new suggestions?
I have seen issues with sprint where phone calls are fine but data wont work in certain areas of the city unless you turn data roaming on it apears that the signals are ok for voice but not for data in thoes areas
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk
Data roaming is checked on, I did go in today and saw a roaming guard on data and turned it off but nothing yet. It's been two months and my push notifications are still not working. Figure I'd come here and bump again.
Im having same issue looks like no one has a solution for this... I get all my notifications while im on wifi but soon as im on data i stop getting some notifications. Very frustrating.

Web Links opening in browser popup window on turbo?

I just got a Droid turbo used and all links from Gmail, Bing, and just about all other apps open in a browser popup window. Half of the content won't load... How do I turn this crap off? I've looked in chrome settings and don't see anything. I'm guessing this is a Motorola feature?
I'm not rooted, verizon 5.1 rom and I have factory reset. This is happening on two different Turbos (mine and my wife's, we just got them from different sellers ).
I just want to open links in a chrome itself and not in some android window.
Thanks!

Window? Odd... And it's chrome?
What launcher are you using?

If you bought it used you should do a factory reset.
Sounds like someone installed malware on your phone. What ROM is it running?
This is what it looks like... This was already factory reset with 5.1 verizon rom. So this isn't normal when opening links from apps (doesn't happen in Chrome, in this case it was a link saying I had replies on this thread in Gmail) on the Droid turbo?
Newest test, I Uninstalled chrome and links from apps still open up in the browser window. My wife's turbo that I just bought is doing the same thing. Both running verizon 5.1 rom and have been factory reset. Any idea guys?

My turbo never did this on stock, ever. When you factory reset, did you set it up as new, or restore backed up apps? If you can screenshot all apps (Settings -> Storage -> Apps), it might help me, and anyone else reading this thread, narrow down a possible cause.
I suspect that it's a "feature" of an app that you have installed. This is definitely not a Moto feature and not something that is built into the stock rom. Are there any web-related apps that both you and your wife have installed?
If you want to ensure that your phones are completely stock (a factory reset won't erase anything that's on the system partition), and they're on version SU4TL-44, follow step 0 of this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/general/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-install-t3292684. If the phones were updated to SU4TL-49, try using the Verizon Upgrade Assistant to repair them (the annoying popup that you get when you plug your phone into the computer).
Figured it out! Both of these phones were purchased from swappa and factory reset. Both had Motorola factory reset protection enabled, which meant I couldn't initially activate them. I had to perform the steps in this video to remove the frp via adb commands : http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mXTojqc0ZX8
This apparently meant the phone wasn't fully activated, but we're still "working". I also thought it was odd that I couldn't change the defaults for Web browsers in Android. Using an app named "Default app manager" showed that my default was set to "Setup wizard" rather than Chrome... Disabled " setup wizard " and then all was fixed and was able to setup my browser of choice as Web default.
Interesting predicament!

Question Unable to view or download gmail attachment

Hello, I recently found out I can't view and download gmail attachments on my Oppo phone. I recalled I can view and download them before, so this must be recent development (possible after c.46 update?)
I also find out I can't download from Google photos and Google drive.
I did everything that is suggested by the internet, clear cache on GMS, playstore, etc.. to no avail.
Upon searching the internet, I came across similar problems with OnePlus devices: oneplus problem
and since OnePlus is part of Oppo, the problem may be related.
Has this also happens to anyone here? Do you have any work around of how to make this work?
Uninstall gmail update and use the factory load version.
On Samsung's I always use the factory load versions for gmail and gmaps because the updated ones suck. Google screws up everything... just give them time.

I tried that, but still can't download attachments that way.
Turned out the OnePlus user figured out the problem here
It is the Clone App feature. I unfortunately did a factory reset on my phone, and Gmail attachments downloaded fine, but as soon as I cloned an app, in this case WhatsApp, I can no longer download from Google Apps.
I always have been using 2 WhatsApp on this phone, and I have downloaded loads of attachments from Gmail with no problem before. I suspect the issue is on the latest software update.
The workaround is to switch to guest mode, and switch back, then its normal again. You don't have to delete the cloned app. One user from that OnePlus forum said if you reset your phone, then download failed again.. but I haven't tried resetting my phone since.
I hope they fix this on the next update

Weird modes create weird problems.
WhatsApp is pure malware, I never go there and it would never be installed on any of my devices.

Unfortunately a factory reset doesn't ID the root cause of the problem, so it can reoccur.
WhatsApp is trashware... what could go wrong?
Try completely uninstalling WhatsApp.
If that doesn't work it may have permanently altered hidden user settings, one of the the hallmarks of a poorly written app. Really it's acting like malware by locking out another app's functionality if so.
Factory reset and do a clean load from scratch. Be careful what you install or you'll be doing it again!
Just because an app is Playwhore approved doesn't make it compatible or even safe!

I have been searching for the workaround for last 10days as even Oneplus Support could not provide any workaround.
The workaround to switch to guest mode, and switch back to Original User temporarily solves the issue. However, If we reboot the device, we have to follow the same procedure again.

Well, I managed to get it to download the gmail attachments again. I have uninstalled the double application (in this case whatsapp), I have restarted the mobile, and reinstalled. The first time the whasapp installation failed, the second time it didn't and magically it re-downloaded the attached files.
It is seen that there is a problem with app cloning in this operating system.
After update to C47 enable permission to storage in gmail app, then files will be down!
Update: issue come back, not know why!
2nd update: after update the firmware to C60, problem solved!
