Hello,
I was using Xtrestolite rom and I was pretty happy with it until I purchased the VR and I couldnt' get it to work ( even though I installed from aroma all the neccesary apps for the VR ). I realized that it seems that is not possible to get the VR with custom roms or certain kernels.
So what do you people do? Stayed on your original carrier rom to make the VR work? That's what I'm doing, and I haven't tested other roms yet.. neither I have plans to upgrade to 5.1.1, I don't want to loose this incredible power that I've got now lol.
Use a custom/modified kernel that supports gear VR
That is a good question, I'm on the verge to try new roms. The stock one has a bit of lag.
Now I'm on the fence about upgrading to 5.1.1, even with stock, will it work with no problems? :S
Aosp 5.1.1 won't work

For me the Gear VR works with 5.1.1 custom ROM and Kernel, see my signature for details.

Have you seen the thread of melo_mx?
Maybe that's the trick...
At least with the Note 4, all the TouchWiz-based custom ROMs I've tried worked, since they thankfully didn't treat the Gear VR Service and related software as bloatware to be removed.
I have yet to try an AOSP ROM, nor do I want to if it means losing Gear VR support in all likeliness.

Just thought I would throw up a thread regarding the gear vr and a custom rom on the note 4.
A few things to note.
I'm using it on my international N910f in Ireland with zero issues
Custom Rom has no issues (Dr Ketan v2)
My DPI is set to 480 and all of the Oculus apps work perfectly without the need of changing their own DPI's in app settings. (I got the feeling it even looked better, but could have been in my head).
Also, I noticed the Oculus Cinema is now picking up all the content on my My Micro SD card. Not sure if was doing it from the start as I was temporarily using the card the gear vr came with. Can make searching for specific videos annoying if you record a lot of videos yourself.

On the setup process did you create a new oculus account or did you already have one. And when you made a new one did you chose ireland as your country or USA?

Ok thanks, i wasn't sure if there is a region lock on the store and will allow only US users.
I'm also using a custom ROM (FireKatN4) just fine, although I had to flash a new kernel (N4 TMO AEL Kernel) to get it to work. Info is in the XDA FireKat thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/not.../firekatn4v1-4-4-4-tw-anj7-extremely-t2916463
Has anyone tried using the VR on lollipop or cm12?

Which kernel are you talking about? I can't find that...
I am confused. So when you guys put the Note 4 in the Samsung Gear VR... it does not prompt for a carrier software upgrade?

I have a tmobile note 4. When I plug it in, it does not ask for any software upgrade. However, I can't use any custom with gear VR. I have to flash the stock nk4 Odin tar to get it working.

Can you please confirm that you have a T-Mobile note 4? If not then you can mess up your phone.
So if I am reading correctly the VR will work on custom roms if the kernel is compliant? I was running stock rooted, wanted to get rid of the lag in the system and went over to SuperStockRom and now after loading the Gear VR software all I get is a blue screen and after 5 seconds it goes to the home screen but with no movements or menus... any ideas?
i'm loving rooted stock at the moment while i use my VR. all that you have to do is flash the latest(or which ever one you prefer) ael kernel in twrp/cwm over whatever rom you are using. no need to setup anything further than that. here's the link for the ael kernel thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...pment/30-november-2014-n4-ael-kernel-t2961240

No because we are using a coustom Rom thats already upgraded
As long as it's a custom rom based on NK4 or later, then it should work perfectly fine. That being said, some people may be using custom kernels based on older versions, which may causes issues.

You can just flash the generic firmware for the Note 4. It's on Sammobile.com. Or I can PM you a link to one I uploaded(will download faster)

sammobile.com/firmwares/download/39224/N910TUVU1ANK4_N910TTMB1ANK4_TMB.zip
My setup:
T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4
Gear VR
FireKat V9
AEL Kernel V7.2
No issues whatsoever!
The Gear VR is so freaking underrated when in fact is the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 "Killer App"!
I recognize I had my doubts about this, but now that I'm using it, there's simply no way to describe it!
SIMPLY AWESOME!
Cheers!
Just about to get my Note 4 in the mail and I ordered a Gear VR with it. I was planning on flashing FireKat, but I'm a little confused if the Gear VR will work. Do I need to be on the stock ROM? Do I have to flash a custom kernel? Thank you for your help!
From what I've read, there are compatible kernels and roms. The question that should concern you is if the dev has included the latest updates, allowing oculus to run when connected to vr. one of the compatible kernel is AEL (sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong).
Yeah that's why I'm just not sure, is there a list somewhere or somehow to check. I searched through FireKat specifically but couldn't find a definitive "yes" or "no".

Is the KT kernel as of 12/08/14 works with he Gear VR? I can confirm that AEL kernel does work.
Tx guys!
Use dk4 and ael it will work for sure. In my opinion dk is a lot smoother as well.
Cool, TX. Do you know if the DK ROM will work with the Verizon Note 4 developper edition?

Is there a debloated TW rom out there for our phones ? N910W8

Thanks

You can check out this thread, there is a Debloated version of stock with root, etc. Good for using as is, or with xposed modules: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=58717681
You could also try one of the popular T-Mobile roms like Firekat (Canadian version) or Dynamic Kat (using AEL kernel). I don't think they are debloated, but they are indeed awesome and you could just debloat them to your liking
If you want to debloat yourself, this link is very useful for explaining what may or may not be important to you and uninstall the rest.

Figured I may as well give Cyanogenmod a try. Anyone using it now ? It seems to not be listed here but on their website they have it .

Does anyone know if this will work directly with Canadian Note or if I need to flash something else ?

I tried CM12 just the other day. Still isn't stable enough to be a daily driver in my opinion. Had a few force closes and needed to pull the battery in the first day. So I went back to FireKat. Once CM12 gets stable I'll go back to it for sure.

Since Xposed is only compatible with ARM7 phones on Lollipop I think I will flash the latest stock again which is 4.4.2 for my klte. With Xprivacy there is no problem with security I guess? BubbleUPNP has a module for Xposed that lets me stream audio from phone to Chromecast for apps without Chromecast support.

Imho 4.4.2 is better than lollipop for now. Most mods here aren't updated for lollipop plus xposed is working there and everything is black instead of the ugly white in 5.0. I got my S5 at the end of January and am real happy with it. Not a single problem so far Check my signature to see which is the latest ROM for the G900F. I also highly recommend you to try the kernel I'm on, it's awesome!

Thank you so much. Will be fun to try it out. Knew Xposed supported Lollipop, but had no idea that it was only for ARM7 devices until yesterday That doesn't matter now that I know how bad it performs in Lollipop. I prefer the GUI in KitKat over Lollipop. It's too polished in Lollipop., and I dislike white too. Great to learn that it's a great phone. So far I love it too.
Spent many hours yesterday to get it working with Windows, figuring out how to root and install rescue and trying out roms. Takes some time to getting into it when getting a new phone, and I don't miss the Sony Xperia Acro S.
If you get stuck in bootloop while reverting back to kitkat, flash kitkat modem and baseband and then try flashing the ROM itself. But i think with Odin you just flash PDA (AP) and that's it. Took me a week until i had my phone completely the way i want it xD

Great toy this with so many options. Not used to that with my former phone. Will be fun.

If you like to control your TV or air-conditioning and stuff with your phone's infrared blaster, then yes it's better. Latest one doesn't have IR blaster working so you can't control anything with Smart Remote. Technically, latest one built on Samsung's official sources is the 21.09.2014 one. Only issue is with the camera. Sometimes when you open it there are some weird colored lines inside and it lags. Toggling HDR on/off fixes it until you start it up again.
Thanks for the info. Running the latest and cannot connect to my WiFi with it. Got a backup of stock luckily.
I had to forsake Xposed to follow the development of CM. 4.4.2 works fine, but following the forefront of the development was hard to resist.

This update 6.0 is sucks if u ask me..
I tried the update several times and everytime i go back to lollipop 5.0 .. why? Heating, poor battery life, LAGS !!, slow charging compared to lollipop, my fav app (Mx Player) doesn't work well on MM..
Maybe it's not meant to work on old devices :/
Well, it's best update since android 4.4,

Try going to stock recovery and clear cache partition and data
And then flash stock rom
Sometimes it might be a problem with your country rom

I already did those. Based on my experience with stock roms, performance varies with region. I tried nearly all of the firmwares from other regions, but they all have the same issue, some are even worse.
