Tomorrow I'm going to buy a Verizon Moto X, non-Developer Edition and I know that you can root without unlocking the bootloader. I just want to have wifi tethering, TiB, Greenify, etc. and don't care so much about custom ROMs for the Moto X.
My questions:
1. What is the definitive method for achieving root from a brand new stock non-DE Verizon Moto X? I believe it will be 4.2.2 when I get it, if that helps.
2. Can I accept OTA updates/camera updates from the Play Store after achieving root? If not, is there a way to stay rooted through updates (maybe just denying OTA updates if they are known to break root and wait for another fix?)
Thanks guys! Excited to start using my new Moto X!

CF root with ATT branded XT1097
Does anyone know if the new CF root method that came out today will work with ATT branded XT 1097? Since we are not able to unlock bootloader directly from Motorola?
Thanks!

Moto X BL discrepancy
I have a Mot X (2014) and after multiple attempts to unlock the BL, I'm stumped. It's a VZW and everytime I input the code string on Moto's site they inform me that the phone is ineligible for BL unlocking.

Do not think that VZW allows the BL unlock same with ATT.

What to use for Verizon xt1096? Is it safe to try both 95 and 97 and see what doesn't fail?
Root for Moto X 2014 XT1096
Does anyone know if there has been an update for rooting the xt1096? I know that the 1095s and the 1097s both have roots available for them but does the 1096? If so where would it be found?
In response to #8, Verizon doesn't let us unlock our bootloaders, and both of the methods (for the 1095 and 1097) require an unlocked bootloader. That means we will need another way to gain root. (Just incase you're wondering, I double checked that those methods won't work by trying to use them on my 1096. Both failed, thus resulting in nothing changing...)
Works on my brazilian xt1097?
if I have a XT1095 rooted on Lollipop, I will get updates? or a I need to reflash the stock boot.img?

You will still get updates, but when you try to flash the update it will fail due to modifications made to the system. If you modded the boot.IMG then you will need to reflash the stock boot.IMG. You will also need to flash the stock system.IMG since it was modified with root access. Once you are completely stock again you can take the update without any issues.
locked hell
I'm in the same boat. I paid full price for what I hoped would be an unlocked phone, but I still got a fully crap-wared phone for use with Verizon. Bootloader is locked, so I'm not sure where that leaves me. I bought this direct from Moto, so not sure how Verizon is still allowed to lock me down.
thank you!
Guys, I have a xt1097 brazilian version. I would like to know if this cf auto root works for me, I'm running android 5.0 with a locked bootloader. It's better unlock bootloader an then use the cf auto root? Or is it better to use cf auto root with the bootloader locked? Does this work with xt1097 running 5.0?
Thank you!
Bye!

Root without Unlocking
Hi I want to root my Moto X 2014 pure edition (off contract), without unlocking the bootloader. Is there a way or some tool to do it.
Also can i unroot my device if in the future
I was just referred to this site for guidance on rooting my Verizon XT1096 (Moto X 2014) running Lollipop 5.0. I understand there was a problem with the locked bootloader on this particular device that has been preventing root access. Is this still the problem? Is root still not being achieved? And also, how can I determine if my device has a locked bootloader?
Thanks
Reboot into fastboot menu it will tell you if its unlocked
There is no root for the Verizon version.
Your phone has a locked bootloader, and unfortunately there is no root for it either. Sorry to say, but you are stuck with a stock phone.

Only a TEMP root, with Towel Root, or TowelPie root was possible on 4.4.2 with a locked bootloader.
IF you've never had your phone upgraded to 4.4.4... and you still have 4.4.2 with bootloader 30.B4, take a look at Sunshine to unlock your bootloader, then you can root just like you had a Developer Edition phone...

Keeping Root & wp off when Upgrading Rooted Retail VZW Moto X with wp off to Lollipop
My Retail XT1060 VZW Moto X 2013 (non-dev edition) is rooted with a locked bootloader and write-protection off and running Android 4.4. I would like to upgrade to Lollipop (Android 5.1) while keeping root access and write-protection off. Is this doable?
Follow up thread-jack that seems highly relevant ...
If I have the same exact device and I am not rooted or bootloader unlocked, is there any good reason to wait to apply Lollipop in hopes that an exploit will be released to root/BL unlocked from 4.4.4?
