Hi
I'm not too familiar with messing around with phones so please bear with me throughout!
Bootloader is locked and I'm running KitKat 4.4.2.
Screen froze the other day so I soft reset (Power + volume down), but it won't boot up and freezes at either the red M logo or at the Intel screen. Cleared the cache on Fastboot mode but this didn't make any difference. I have some really important photos that I'd like to keep, so I haven't cleared the user data.
Before upgrading to 4.4.2, on 4.1.2 I easily fixed this problem by flashing using RSD Lite and only having the "system signed" line in the XML code. This fixed it and I didn't lose any of my files. I'd have tried the same but have learnt that the 4.4.2 fastboot files aren't yet available.
Please help!
Thanks,
Sam

Sorry to say, but clearing userdata might be your only option. There is no way to recover data if it does not boot and the bootloader is locked.
If the bootloader were unlocked you could recover the photos via TWRP recovery. The big problem is that when you do the bootloader unlock process it erases your phone, so it won't help you now as it will erase everything.
There still isn't a 4.4.2 firmware file. We have to wait for it to be leaked, but that might never happen.

What @AGISCI is true. But if u can get to the Intel logo (part of the bootanimation) and have adb debugging enabled u could try to pull your important files from the phone. But if u don't have both adb debugging enabled than there is no chance. U could try to manually flash the system_signed from 4.1.2 firmware and see how far u can get as last resort. Hope that it boots and if possible u can extract the files.
I've got exactly the same problem today.
I have unlocked bootloader and I'm OK with erasing all data.
KitKat 4.4.2
What can I possibly do to make my phone working again? Is there any solution?
Many thanks.

With bootloader unlocked u can flash a custom recovery and wipe userdata through that. U can even wipe user data through the stock recovery if I am correct.
If that doesn't solve your problem, install a custom recovery and then restore the system partition of one of the KitKat twrp backups. And do a factory reset (data wipe) after that.
Hi everybody,
I do have the same problem with screen freezing on intel logo.
I'm ok to erase everything and I tried every options in the bootloader menu (recovery, factory,...) but it doesn't help.
Any idea?
Thanks,
Sylvain
I have the exact same problem since yesterday.
Already wiped cache and data, and still stuck. Any suggestions? :S

Hello guys.
So my cousin's AHD started to reboot all times and can't cross over the "M" logo.
I tried everything, opened stock recovery, wiped data/cache, downloaded stock firmware and flashed with RSD, then flashed manually, step-by-step, but still no luck.
Phone starts, moto logo appears, then it restarts and so on.
Might it be a hardware issue?
For the sake of god, help me guys

When you flash with RSD Lite, does it gives you an error? Have you tried doing it manually with fastboot?

I cant tjink of anything other then asking what rom version you are using
Sent from my Atrix HD using ProBAM rom and XDA 4 Premium
Well, you could try "fastboot -w" (a factory reset via fastboot) to see if the problem is related to the internal SD or userdata. That's a common issue we were having when CM10.2 sucked and users were swapping between stock roms and custom 4.2+ roms (the sd card is stored differently from 4.1 to 4.2+). It was a cause of some of my bootloops.
I noticed you metioned using stock recovery....is your bootloader locked? If yes then only use the fastboot zip of your last stock rom and nothing else. Even with an unlocked bootloader we can't downgrade gpt_main0.bin (the first thing fastboot flashes) so stick with your stock rom just in case this is a hardware issue....cause it would seriously suck to be voided for warranty because they detected the wrong partition table, and they will detect that because an RSD flash is the first thing they'll do.
If you could, post some screenshots of you flashing crap with RSD and from the terminal. Most of the time those screenshots help us more than what's actually posted in text. If you're unlocked with CWM and ADB up and running, then after a loop access CWM and do "adb shell cat /proc/last_kmsg > C:\last_kmsg.txt" and post the last_kmsg.txt here. That'll tell us if this is a kernel error or not.

thanks mate for respond.
first of all, BL is locked and i know about RSD and all that crap things. There is latest stock JB installed on this phone, i also tried fastboot -w command, but it makes nothing, still boot loop.
I haven't CWM, because of locked BL.
I saw video on youtube, how to fix boot loop. Guy in that video, removed battery, gave it on external direct charge and fixed phone. If necessary, i'll post the link. I just wanna know, if it's hardware or software issue. Thanks in advance

Probably a software issue. For some reason these phones can be very finicky.
In that video I'd assume that guy used a Moto Factory cable...that's the only think I can think of that will allow us to do that. The Factory cable is able to power the board directly from USB and is a good tool to keep around (I actually need to get one myself).
When you say "latest stock JB" do you mean "latest stock AT&T JB or Bell JB or Mex Retail JB". It matters. If your last stock was AT&T and you flash Mex Retail system, dev_tree, & boot.img then it won't work (gpt_main0.bin will detect the different partition md5 and halt the boot). If you can manually flash gpt_main0.bin from AT&T JB then your last stock was AT&T JB, if not then use the Bell JB fxz, if still not then use Mex Retail fxz. (snap-fastboot flash partition gpt_main0.bin....snap-fastboot is what I renamed our custom fastboot executable to).

Of course i mean AT&T stock JB. I didn't flash anything, except at&t stock firmware.
this is link, to that fix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QgavcY0OAg
One more thing guys.
When i try to flash with RSD, it can't be finished, because of loop.
there is 23 step for flashing.
It writes system, writes boot, writes everything, than it erases cache and reboots, but stucks in boot loop.
Result is "In Progress", if i look on RSD.
Suddenly phone came back to life, idk why.
but now i'm afraid to unlock bootloader, coz i'm not sure, if it comes back to life after reboot.
what should i do?

Ok . some of your files seem to be corrupt . since your boot loader is unlocked , you Dont have to worry a lot. Do you have the stock 4.4.4 file with you ? If you do, flash that .
What I meant is , downgrade to a proper 4.4.4 KitKat .
Go completely stock, even the stock recovery and then try an OTA update to lollipop
how
tell me please where i can find a flash procedure for a xt1063 global gsm, no i dont have the stock file with me, could you tell me what it is? my last phone was a samsung so i only have odin experience, thanks for your help

After read a couple of thing, the problem is solved thanks for help i just flash the stock firmware as you said, now i dont if i have to update or not, i want to be sure first if i can do it well
My phone also got brick but i saw firmware and i flashed now phone working.
Hello,
I did a reboot and now I can't use my phone anymore. I see the Boot animation but after the Boot up, the screen just turns black. I receive notifications and active display is working, also I can start my camera with the twist but I can't take picture because the touchscreen does not respond. On active display or the power off pop up, the touchscreen is working. So I did a cache partition wipe but this hasn't fixed my problem. The strange thing is that after a couple of frustrated reboots, the Boot animation changed to the old animation with the spinning world. I want to reset the phone via recovery but first I need to backup my data. I have very important Data on my phone like whatsapp log or Photos and videos.. I can't connect my phone to the computer because I have a pin... How I can Backup my data and what caused the black screen?
If your bootloader is unlocked you can flash TWRP. TWRP has the ability to decrypt userdata if you have the password. I don't know if it can decrypt the moto x or not, because TWRP only officially support ASOP type encryption, if motorola uses a different technique for encryption it will say the password is wrong. If it works you can browse and backup files from TWRP recovery.
If it says the password is wrong or you don't have the bootloader unlocked, then you are SOL and have lost everything.
In either case doing a factory reset will hopefully fix your issue.

After the factory reset bootup takes longer than normal, how long did you wait?
If that is not the case, what model moto x do you have? For example mine is xt1095. Also what version of android do you have? 5.0, 4.4.4, 5.0.2, 5.1, etc?

same issue today
also have the same issue, black screen after reboot. moto voice, active display/notifications are responsive, camera too when twisting the phone. moto voice says "unlock your phone to continue" but i currently don't have any screen locks or anything, just swipe. i have a pure edition running on 5.1. Skeptical about a reset since the phone is still responsive.. tried looking for other fixes, but looks like this issue is just coming up today...
This exact same thing happened to me. Updated to 5.1 about a week ago via the OTA. Wiping cache did nothing. Diagnosing it as a software issue, I attempted to sideload the official 5.1 OTA that's posted elsewhere in the forums. It came back as installation aborted, so I gave up on any hope of keeping my data and did a factory reset. Now all it does is bootloop, sometimes settling on the prone android no command screen for a little while. I can boot into recovery and the bootloader, but thats it. Really hoping someone can come up with a solution. XT1096.

I've waited about 30 minutes, in this time my phone just bootet into the recovery by his self. I've contacted Motorola and I'll send my device to repair.
It's a xt1092 with 5.1 RETDE.
I personally think that this issue is caused by the Boot animation update.

You still do everything through terminal. You have to cd to your folder that has adb and fastboot enclosed, usually platform-tools. Instead of starting each command with "adb", you'll start with "fastboot" and you'll be flashing these while your phone is at the fastboot screen.
The full image files are in the forums, and all the commands you'll need, in order, are posted in this thread earlier
I have found that some time the fastboot from Moto wouldn't recognize the phone. I, then, use the mfastboot-v2 found somewhere around this forum works great.
Me too faced this problem few days back. Only option left to do was factory reset.
Read below just to go through of what i faced:
( I had gone through bunch of articles for restoring my data but i had a pin lock because of which while connecting to pc it couldnt detect phone.
Other things i tried includes flashing lockscreen bypass zip via stock recovery. There i faced signature verification failed error because i had done it through stock recovery where it doent let u toggle signature verification on/off as in CWM. )
And for those who wants their data back , i found many articles of data recovery after factory reset. But it needed your device to be rooted. All you have to do is after factory reset dont make use of phone and after rooting you can recover your phone by software as EASEUS android recovey, Dr fone android recovery. Thats all .
I am too facing this issue as of last night,, I have the verizon version (complete stock, no root, locked bootloader) and I am not sure how to go about fixing this without losing all my data.. I tried wiping cache but it did nothing.. Can anyone provide some kind of troubleshoot guide please? It would be much appreciated.
A friend of mine is also having the same issue.
I tried the 5.0 image and it won't flash.
I'm locked and without root. Is it even possible to flash even the factory images? (And yes, I've tried to go to the Customer Portal for the Moto X and that isn't giving me anything)
Edit: Finally got it to flash the stock image. Didn't help. Factory reset fixed things.
Note: I had this problem and was able to fix it through a factory reset, but I had to do it through minimal adb and fastboot. The bootloader factory reset option didn't work.
I am having the exact same issue. Has anybody had a luck resolving it short of a factory reset?
My phone battery died last night. I plugged my phone in, let it get about 15% charge, then tried to turn it back on. The phone boots like normal, but after the boot animation goes away, the screen is black. Active notifications still seem to work, and I can hold the power button to get the Power Down option. I can boot into the bootloader & access recovery just fine. However, my phone is fully stock (no root, no bootloader unlock, no anything). I can't seem to access ADB when the phone is powered normally (ie, when I'm at this mysterious black screen), but it's possible that USB debugging isn't even enabled.
So far, I've found a bunch people who've said a full factory reset will fix the problem, but I'm looking for another solution, or at least a way to grab my data before I reset. Since my bootloader's still locked, I can't seem to use fastboot boot to boot into TWRP, and I can't find any other way to access my data to copy it off the phone. I've tried wiping the cache using the stock recovery to no avail. Any suggestions?
Trying to recover data after XT1096 5.1 black screen bug
So I encountered this bug about 2 days ago. It's basically a bug that results in an un-responsive black screen for no apparent reason. I tried all the standard support protocols to save my data (i.e. copy files to pc via USB, and using Cellebrite to pull them off) but without MTP or USB Debugging enabled none of these options worked. Both Verizon and Motorolla tech support advised me to factory reset my phone. However being that a reset will wipe all my data, I've refused to go down that path (yet). So after doing some of my own research I came up with the following ideas, which so far have not been successful.
Idea 1 - use adb to sideload an OTA update with a fresh image that will hopefully resolve the black screen bug but not wipe my data. I followed this thread with partial luck. I got about 47% through the sideload process before it crashed complaining about an invalid full image check
Idea 2 - use fastboot to flash all the images except user data (again with the hopes of resolving the black screen bug without losing data) - But I can't seem to find a compatible set of stock images that will play nicely with my unrooted and locked bootloader phone.
Idea 3 - root my phone, load a custom rom (with no black screen bug) and preserve my user data - unfortunately mofo doesn't support an XT1096 root since I've already accepted the 5.1 OTA.
So my question are:
1 - Are there a set of verizon stock digitally signed images anywhere out there that will work with my XT1096 with 5.1 already installed?
if not
2 - Is there any way to root my phone or unlock the bootloader so that I can accept non-factory images without the use of Mofo?
Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

1) Yes there are stock signed images for the xt1096. They won't fix your problem. The problem is the data partition is corrupt. Flashing a stock image does not change nor fix the data partition, so it won't help.
2) No, there is no other way.
I am sorry to say, but there is only one solution, which is factory reset. The reason factory reset works is because it will erase the corrupted data partition. Sorry, but you will lose your data, there is no way to recover now. Since you have 5.1 installed, it is also impossible to use mofo and sunshine, so no root and no bootloader unlock neither.
I'm in the same boat except I'm on vacation with out my computer. Can I factory reset from fastboot?
Yes you can. Once you are in fastboot select recovery. Once you are in recovery and see the dead android press power and volume down to open the menu, then select factory reset.

Thanks Chris,
I appreciate the response. Do you know where I might find the stock signed images for xt1096? I've somehow hosed my system img so now I can't even get into recovery to do a factory reset (keeps complaining 'failed to validate system image'). I'm hoping to re-flash the stock system.img to fix this problem. Let me know.
Thanks!
Sure here it is:

Thanks!
That got me back to where I started. System is no longer 'invalid' and my phone boots up to a black screen. The notifications still work and I can boot into fastboot or recovery modes. I guess my only option now is to bite the bullet and factory reset now (and loose my data). :crying:
Thanks again for all your help!

Yes you can. Once you are in fastboot select recovery. Once you are in recovery and see the dead android press power and volume down to open the menu, then select factory reset.

weird. I go into fastboot and got the options: normal boot, recovery, factory and some others and i can cycle through with vol down. vol up is select but no matter what i select it just boots normally (still have black screen)
do i need to unlock something?
I need some more info. Are you on stock rom? What version(4.4.4, 5.0, or 5.1)? Have you unlocked your bootloader with sunshine? Have you rooted woth mofo or kingroot?

Hey everyone,
I've rooted my Nexus 6 device and tried to modify some of the partitions on the device (logo, aboot, boot).
The device has gone bricked but as that's not the first time it is done I guessed it's a soft brick and can easily be fixed downloading a factory ROM for the Nexus.
I did that, and both Marshmallow and Lollipop were stuck on boot (the colored circles which eventually form the "Android" title).
I also tried custom ROMs, but nothing helped (got to the same point were the colored circles jump infinitely).
I tried to flash the ROM both via fastboot and via the recovery menu.
The bootloader is accessible and unlocked. However, it still doesn't work.
Before I rush to JTAG experiments, does anyone have any idea how to solve this? (or at least, some ideas which aren't mentioned above).
Needless to say, I was wiping the cache everytime I flashed the ROMs.
Sincerely,
Adam.

Did you also first reflash the bootloader when flashing stock firmware? Also fastboot ersae system and fastboot format cache before flashing anything.

Yes, I also reflashed the bootloader. The room itself comes with a "flash-all.sh" script which did not work as well.
I also tried to fastboo erase system and fastboot format cache (both with the recovery feature and the fastboot feature) but it did not work....
Same outcome - waiting on the colored circles.

Just tried this order. I've been waiting up for 40+ minutes for the phone to boot, however it still loops on these circles.
If it matters - I just tried the 6.0.1 ROM (I've been working on 6.0.0 previously).

Your best bet is to run a logcat as it is booting to see where it is hanging. Your issue was messing with the partitions. Not a wise thing to do.

Already thought about that - however adb keeps waiting for a device and shows nothing...
Code:
*adamdo**~**shamu-mmb29k**adb logcat
- waiting for device -
