Edit: FIXED IT
I made a back up of stock 5.1.1 after I got my new RMA phone and after I updated it ..went through rooting unlocked bootloader.
I backed up stock ROM, flashed a few times since .
When I try to restore I get a unable to mount system error in twrp then the back starts and right around resorting system image twrp goes blank and reboots to Google screen and sticks there like glue Nothing reboots ???
What's causing my back up to not restore?
It was most definitely a successful back up to!
I still have it in storage .

If you are trying to restore a backup, then all you need to do is select that backup. If I'm misunderstanding what you mean to do or what the issue is, you may want to either upgrade or downgrade your version of TWRP. I had read the previous version wasn't working right for backup and restores. The app updated today in the Play store.
Did you even READ what the issue was?
He's talking about one thing (a problem I've experienced, in fact) and you're talking about something totally different.
Just saying.

I tried to flash a theme update from zip in recovery mode and it messed something up royally. Now when I boot the phone it shows the HTC logo then just goes black and never comes back. I made a Nandroid back up right before I flashed and it said it completed it successfully, but when I go to recovery (volume down + power button) and select nand restore, it says its restoring and then restoring complete but when I reboot it still goes to the black screen. What do i need to do differently? I have never had to restore until now.
I'm on Fresh 2.3.3
Try wiping all data and dalvik and then restoring the nandroid.

Do adb logcat. It might actually be booting without a bootscreen.

Can you walk me through that? Sorry I haven't ever heard of it.
EDIT: Ok I let it run for a while and it eventually boots up but the boot screens/sounds never show or play. So I completely wiped the phone and reflashed Fresh 2.3.3... still no boot screens or sounds! I don't know what I could have messed up that complete wipe/flash doesnt get rid of. Any ideas? Also now Titanium is saying that it cant get root access because my phones not rooted properly. What tha?
Bump... Still having this issue. The phone is usable but the boot images and sounds are gone
nobody has mentioned this but maybe you just have a bad Nandroid. maybe something did not copy right or something in the phone internally got deleted during the backup/restore process. i saw on android forums somewhere it happened to some person using an Eris. Cant quite remember how he got it fixed but he ended up fixing it somehow.

Well I thought it might be a bad nandroid too, so I just wiped the phone and flashed fresh without ever restoring the backup and it still has no boot images or sounds. It's the strangest thing. When I flashed the first time to 2.3.3 the re were definately boot images and I flashed from the same file this time.
You might have to just use the RUU and start over from scratch, I had to do that once and it sucked.

So, I used this guide to root and everything went fine no problem. I didn't see the clockwork recovery step and went straight to removing bloatware. Now when I try to backup current rom and goes to blue menu and I have to click reboot. I am a complete beginner and could it be messing up because I did not backup right away? SO, I would like to unroot and try again. I tried searching the forum to unroot and read many things from one click unroot to odin3. I am unsure of which method and if someone can tell me how to get it back to how it was. I just did a factory reset before rooting so I just want it back to that. Pictures, contacts, music is fine to stay as I did a manual backup via mass storage but how can I get the phone back to that state. Thanks and sorry for the long message.
ALSO, WHEN I FACTORY RESET earlier this day it already had quickoffice so, I know the phone did not reset to its original state, but the updated one that is fine. I just want it unrooted and back to how it would be with that factory reset and I will try to root and back up again later. Or if this is not an issue why is it going to the bluescreen after pressing backup current rom in clockwork
When in blue screen click reinstall packages, you will be brought back to the same screen, click reinstall packages again. Enjoy

so should I go to the bluescreen by holding volume + power or through the backup rom step?
thanks again
Did you hit the to option in rom manager to flash clockwork? If so open up rom manager, click backup, it will reboot to blue screen, reinstall packages twice, it will backup
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
ok so I just clicked backup current rom and it brought me to the blue screen. Instead of pressing reboot system now I should choose reinstall packages
OK I just clicked reinstall packages twice and it brought be to a black screen with green clockwork recovery text. After click reboot now.
DOES this mean that I have backed up the rom? is it stock? and if I had to use it would it have no att bloatware on it. I am a little confused. After seeing this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8507559&postcount=1
I figure I should try it this way. Will I still be able to get to the unrooted factory reset state? Even if it is fine now could you explain how I would do that?
When it went to the green clockwork screen did it run a backup for like 3 minutes? If not you are not backed up yet
Your backup its of your current state, no bloatware rooted, are you looking to find a way to get back to a out of box state?
Do you have a pc our a mac.

I have a PC. Earlier today I did a factory reset, all apps gone but photos, videos, etc still there. I restored my contacts from a different sim card. So, I figure while it is clean I should root. Now I would like to unroot and try again. I am trying to get it back to the state it was earlier not quite a out of box state but a factory reset state if possible, so all att apps, no messages, contacts, etc.
hey everyone, i'm new here. Sorry if this has been posted before, but i'm having a bit of a problem right now.. I rooted my CDMA hero last night. I made a nandroid backup of my phone before i flashed any roms. I flashed a rom and did something wrong, so i tried to restore my nandroid backup... and i got stuck at the "htc - quietly brilliant" screen. i then found out i'm supposed to wipe all data, so i did, and flashed the nandroid backup again.. same problem. so i flashed a different ROM and it loaded up.. so, again, i wiped all data and tried to restore my stock ROM (google didn't back up contacts when it said they were, so i'm trying to restore to get them back)... and i'm STILL getting the quietly brilliant screen. Any help? Thanks!
When you restore - it does take a while to boot up. How much time did you wait on the white screen? Also, did you get any errors during the nand restore?
no, no errors.. and i waited a pretty long time. Enough to allow the "Quietly Brilliant" screen to flash black, then come back up a few times... i'll do another nandroid restore though and watch for errors. But when i did it before, I didn't see any.
this can happen if you don't have enough space on your sd card during the backup. it has been my experience that nand will not give you an error when it runs out of space, everything appears to have completed as it should, but when you go to restore not everything is there, thus causing the phone not to boot.
also as someone else stated the first boot after a wipe can take a very very long time. 10-15+ mins. (this is not always the case)
my advice (for what it is worth) try a full wipe, and load a new rom. another thing to consider is that most (should be all) roms do not come with gapps built in. once you flash the new rom, before you try and boot it, you should also flash gapps. for instance aospCMod will not load without it.
my sd card actually got messed up before all of this (pulled the battery out when phone froze) so i reformatted it.. it was almost completely empty when I did the backup. It's an 8gb card, too.
yeah i'm actually using a version of aosp, and i installed gapps. i'm currently running it now, but i lost all of my contacts (100+... haha)
I'll charge the phone up, restore and let it be for 10-15 mins like you suggested, when I get home later today. Thanks everyone so much for the help.

Are you using Firerat mod? That happens when the partition is too small.

Hi,
My wifi 8.9 galaxy tab won't complete nandroid backups. I have 3.3gb space (more than enough) and after successfully backing up the boot image, recovery and /system partitions, when it reaches /data it appears to freeze. Around 30s later it reboots to whatever state the device was in. If it was off and turned on to recovery it'll turn on, if I chose "reboot to recovery" from the advanced power menu it reboots to recovery.
I have wiped /cache and delvik cache but this didn't help. The backups created are around 200mb.
I've made nandroids previously with no problem. Updating didn't help (now at 6.0.0.8, I had 5.5.0.4). Current rom is AOKP-5.
Any ideas? I want to flash cm10 but until I get a good backup I don't want to proceed!
I've had that problem too. I don't know what caused it but I resolved it by using ODIN to go back to stock. In stock recovery, factory reset (which wiped EVERTYTHING)*, and reinstall stock ROM again by ODIN.
At least at that point I had a functioning tab from which I could re flash cwm recovery and whatever else I wanted. Had to reinstall apps too.
Was a bit of trial and error and I managed to stumble my way through, but that was my journey. Maybe someone else here knows better...... If you end up doing the same, backup everything you need/want externally. And get yourself a cup of tea.
*My other tip I gleaned was holding power button, up volume and down volume at the same time turns the tab off. (used for turning tab off whilst in stock recovery).

Hidenandroidprogress didn't work unfortunately, thanks for the suggestion though!
It's fixed now though, and required a flash back to stock in ODIN (which actually failed and caused me to bootloop, though I'm not sure why as I chose the correct device & my location!). Fortunately I could get into (stock) recovery and so I used adb to push CWM to the sd card and flashed that, then pushed CM10. Flashed it, and now I have a super smooth GTab with Jelly Bean that can do nandroids. Sorted!
I seem to be having trouble with my install of CWMT 6.0.3.1; Aroma freezing (known issue) and the nandroid I made of my original image tells me the md5 doesn't match (!!).. i get all sorts of failed to mount messages when starting it too.
I notice there's version 6.0.3.2 for Sprint and T-Mobile, so how is that different to the regular HTC One? Hoping that a reinstall and update might fix some of these problems, but just wanted to check if these other versions would work on an international version.

Have you renamed your Nandroid backup at all?
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
Nope, didn't touch a thing. Just tried to restore the backup after an install of ARHD seemed to crash mid-install, and CWMT restarted the phone when I didn't tell it to so I got stuck in a bootloop - couldn't even turn the phone off despite holing down the power button, it just kept turning back on. Couldn't load recovery either..
Got all that sorted with loading CWMT via fastboot and reinstalling ARHD. Got Aroma freeze, but at the end this time, so after reboot it finally booted in to the system... but not convinced all is stable.
Not sure if it's a CWMT thing, or something else? My bootloader now also says 'tampered', not sure why or if that changes anything?

Its an Aroma thing. Just go through the install slowly, try not to use the touchscreen - use the volume and power buttons instead. Also, people say that it tends not to crash if the phone is cool in temperature.
Tampered, I think, is just because you have a custom recovery. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks for clarifying Still seem to have Aroma problems even when using the buttons, and occasionally it crashes mid-install. Get there in the end though, and have switched to TWRP which seems to work a bit better with the Aroma installs.
I read that CWM 6.0.3.2 has fixed the Aroma problems, but is only available for Sprint and T-Mobile at the moment.
