[Lollipop] Do i need the update? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
i just bought the moto x 2014 on rueducommerce.com (299 euros, and as you may guess i'm french) earlier this week, it arrived yesterday. I have a question for you. Before this phone i had a xperia sp... Was great at the beginning... But every update i did (from 4.1.2 to 4.3) made the phone slower, even buggy. I never reached the comfort of the original jelly bean (4.1.2). Changed the phone 3 times with Orange, but all 3 devices had issues too.
My point is : i like kitkat, my phone is fast, i didn't download a lot of app and i'm not a fan of phone games. I'm afraid to lose the smoothness and fluidity of my phone as i read multiple times that lollipop was buggy. As you may understand, my experience with the sony left me traumatized with updates x)
I ask for your advice : is the 5.1 release worth updating Or maybe wait a little more, for android M?
Thanks for you replies

Personally, I wouldn't go back to KitKat and I loved it when I was running it. The 5.1 update is running really good for me now. Battery life is a lot better since the latest Google Play services update because that was destroying my battery life. Everything else is good. I say give it a shot.

Thanks for your answer. The battery is indeed weak, it doesn't bother me since I'm on holidays but it will be difficult in September. I downloaded deep battery saver but it doesn't change the battery life, or just a few

yes, wait the release for the developer & they will build it.
But it is still a developer preview
L's only two versions away. I'm sure we'll get a port or a CM rom sooner or later.
If any developer that I know of from Xperia Z, it will definitely be @pabx first to release Android L.
He was the first to bring KitKat over to Z in just a matter of days. In fact, it was not with some unusable build either. A full usable rom for daily driver.
Android L = Awesome Xperia Z !
Yes..!!!:good::good:
I totally agree with Android L being ported to Xperia Z....!!! It's much better than any software till now...
Here are the reasons;
Key Features:
Improved Notifications
Project Volta: Improved Battery Life (Needed for Xperia Z, due to battery drain issue in Kit Kat)
Google Fit...Competition for Apple's Healthkit
Better Web Integration
Runs on ART extension , (support for 64bit systems), (Dalvik is being ditched).
Since RAM usage will be less, and apps usage and loading time will be faster...
So lets wait for CM, PAC, Carbon...or some other developer till then...
Cheers...

Not impressed with it so far.
Auto Rotate toggle? Already on my stock 4.4.2
Adaptive Brightness? Already in all versions of Android.
Those are just two things I picked up on....

I don't expect Sony to update Xperia Z to 5.0 - we will probably hear "you already received 3 updates, that's it folks".
IMO it shouldn't be about how many versions you receive - it should be about a timeframe. If your phone doesn't receive updates after 1,5 years, then maybe you should stop making new phones every 6 months if you can't manage to update them - and look at other companies like HTC, Samsung ( yes... ) or perhaps Apple who offers iOS8 to a 4,5 years old iPhone 4S.
Does my post sound like I'm angry with Sony ? Good, because I am...
KitKat was a disappointment. Been waiting almost a year and received nearly no new features apart from UI redesign which doesn't really matter to me anyway and tons of bugs, battery woes etc. To be honest - every single release had some kind of problems, especially with battery life...

KitKat's battery drain was not Sony's fault however. It was Google and Google Services, as with a previous version I cannot recall. Those kind of things are out of their reach since it varies from phone to phone with its version. I do agree however that there are some "kinks" that need to be remedied. I cannot understand why they refuse to unify most builds so they run similar applications. Like for example the stock KitKat apps (like Messaging and Settings) on my Z are totally different from Z2's stock apps running KitKat

Do it! you think that somebody of us will beg you to stop? or sony CEO will appear and give you android 100?
Just stop complaining kid, if you have enought money for an other phone just to have a better toy to play with, feel free and buy it, we don't care. And in 6 months you will complain again for a new update that roll out, and with a new Brand that won't provide it to you.
I bought xperia Z because I was fine on how it was, it had everything i needed and I liked it. Why you bought it if you have to cry? Or yo mean it was good until something new came out? that is so illogical. stop looking to the neighbour's grass and just be happy whit what you have.

Maybe it is all on purpose. Bugs, bugs and bugs but redesign UI and everybody is happy at the moment they upgrade it's firmware. And than, bitterness strike.
Maybe Sony wanna make XZ more and more buggy so it's users can look forward to Z2 or Z3, because XZ is still very capable of doing practically anything and is still strong and better phone than most 2014 mid-rangers and all Xperia non-Z models.
Yesterday I compared for couple of hours Z2 on 4.4.2 with my XZ 4.4.2. UI Smoothness is basically the same. WiFi/3G surfing the same, talk quality the same. Photo and 1080 video quality has very small improvement on XZ2. OK, sound quality, battery and screen are way better, but for common users like me, transition to XZ2 is freaking waste of money, except for battery duration. I switched in May 2013 form HTC Desire to Xperia Z and that cost me 100 EUR. Now, July 2014, transition form XZ to XZ2 would cost me 250 EUR. For what? Better AnTuTu benchmark score

Then you should get the g3 ? I think the g3 is a better upgrade than the z2 . Different ui , higher res , bigger screen but smaller size than the z2 . Getting a z2 or z1 for upgrade is like getting a slightly bigger screen size with more power .

... how was that a complaint? I am simply stating I am selling it if they announce the exclusion in their update roadmap. How you come up with all these impressions of me being a whiner is beyond me. I do have money to buy any phone really but I don't mind keeping the Z a little longer.

[Q] kitkat vs jelly bean on g flex

Dear all , i bought my lg flex with a jb everythin . Was awesome after i upgraded to kitkat im experiencing heat problems and battery drains issues before on jb in the end of the day i used to have 60 % now like 10% i need ur help in those 2 questions
1- should i downgrade to 4.2.2 and if i do that can i have the kitkat camera .apk cz its better
2- rooting will help that much and how to on 3.4.0 kernel
IM holding a D955 version
Thank you everyone in advance
This.
This is why I don't understand why everyone always wants software updates.
Even now, people are talking about wanting android l on their note 4
Guess what people, all updates bring is pain, and the wish to roll back, until next year when you buy a new phone, that was intended to be running the newer software... but even then, they want the update!
Then, the people who want updates are told to buy a nexus, because they are always first for updates. I bought the nexus 5 on day one, sure, I could run the Dev preview of android L if I wanted. .. but it's not complete, it's not the true version of Android L, and in all fairness, it's been almost a whole year now, and in all fairness, The only real appreciable update I will have had all year, is when I get android L on a nexus 6.
Even almighty apple can't do updates without having it break their older phones. Bottom line is, you want an update, you buy a new phone.
You are absolutely right with what you said .. i think the same way but before updating it they said it improves the battery life like 3 hrs ... it was a mistake anyway im on 4.2.2 again from the early morning till the moment im 47%...

[Q] Skipping over 5.1 to Android M?

Google has released many leaks to what Android M will offer. T Mobile has leaked the 5.1.1 software that is expected to be pushed to Galaxy s6 and s6 edge, but we only know an expected time frame for the update. Nobody has an exact date or time with credible sources to back it up. Could we possibly be getting an Android M update soon after the push of 5.1? Or maybe (going out on a limb here) could T Mobile decide to suspend the update and hold out for Android M? (They've done this before with the s3 units.)
Probably not. M is only a preview right now and 5.1 is expected to drop in mid june

Fact is, we definitely are not going to see M on S6 anytime soon. Firstly it won't even be official until end of the year. Secondly look at the slow lollipop roll out last year, so we may get it early 2016.
Most importantly, we don't want them to do that...no update until M? This phone needs updates to fix several things, cell standby drain, volte drain, ram management, etc...

According to reports, international s6 will get 5.1.1 in mid June. So with any luck, we will see the update through our carriers by mid July .
As far as M , it won't be released till late October/early November. Since is not such a drastic update like KK to Lollipop we will probably see it by mid January

I completely agree that the phone needs updates like wifi calling and etc. I really hope we get the update to 5.1 as soon as possible, ad preferably, before July. I have a G3 running stock 5.1.1 currently, and the battery life is amazing (even running on a stock kernal) and I have heard a few rumors that Android M will include some security fixes and additions, as well as new multi windows and some new developer options to adjust over/under clocking of the cpu. I have high hopes for M. I hope that we eventually, on the stock rom and kernal, can do some of the M stuff on the s6. It's a great phone with great potential.

True about the potential of S6. Just shocks the heck out of me that Samsung didn't notice the ram management, or didn't think it a issue in the testing phase. At first it didn't bother me, but more and more (unless it's gotten worse) it's been shutting stuff down randomly while only doing like two or three things.
And then Google...I don't get them either. Why does it take as long as six months and longer for the roll out to get to some devices especially the new ones, note 4? I know carries have something to do with that as well but if you release it say October they should penalize carries if they haven't shipped it by end of December. The whole nexus thing first should be thrown out the window since they are now releasing main stream phones not just geared at developers.

Samsung makes great phones. Hell, they pioneered the phablet idea with the Note series. My only problem with them is that they miss key features very often. For example, the ram management on the s6 and the whole overload of TouchWiz on the s3-s5 units. My battery has (this week) been decently lasting me the most of the day. Standby drain is sometimes present, but that's when I know I have to end some processes via greenify without root permissions. I'm really looking to root after the 5.1 update to get the full effect of greenify, as well as deleting some bloatware. Right now, the basic greenify is saving me tons of battery life. I recommend it. My G3 had awesome battery life stock, and even better with my custom roms.

Need Suggestions

Hey guys.I need some suggestions about moto x.I'm planning to get one but after reading so many negative comments about latest lollipop update,I'm not sure if I should get it.
I'm gonna ask some questions and I hope you will answer me.
1: How's the performance with official LP?My xperia sp becomes sluggish after 1-2 days so I have to reboot it.
2: How's the battery life?I easily get 4-5 hours of SoT with xperia sp.(I know it has bigger battery than moto x but i think battery life should be about same or only litte less than that.)I don't use mobile data, just wifi.Little bit gaming and messaging.Mostly fb and youtube.
Nothing Negative if you keep it STOCK

I have been using the phone for the past 5 days on 5.1 Lollipop. I bought it 15 months back on its Launch Date in India.
I never rooted it or unlocked the Bootloader. I am in stock from start.
Installed Lollipop, backed up my data and did a reset (this is what I do after every update)
1. No performance issues. its butter smooth. (and no matter what happens, I used to reboot my phone every night)
2. Same 4-5hrs SoT like many other devices (with Moto Display ON; 4 hours on 3g for Whatsapp, Gmail; I didn't install any game after the reset though; also Black Wallpaper) and with 20% left
The first gen X would be a good and value for money phone to buy now. Also note, 5.1 would be the last official update.
My favorite phone any day...
Thanks. So you are using totally stock LP and getting decent performance and battery life.I would probably root it to remove unwanted apps and bloatware.

Sorry for bumping this thread again. One last question.
If I get xt1058, other than at&t,i'll be able to unlock its bootloader from moto website right?
And all moto x's carrier variant have a logo on their back?
I have seen many moto x that don't have carrier logo on their back but they are xt-1058 models.

What kind of problems can an upgrade to lolipop cause?

Hey Guys
I have a rooted moto x on android 4.4.4 and recently motorola released the android 5.1 OTA update for my device.
So i was just wondering if i should upgrade or not, or if there are any known problems because my friend with a nexus 5 upgraded to lolipop quickly and it was a disaster.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Pros and cons of lolipop (IMHO)
Pros:
1) New moto voice (you can set your own launch phrase)
2) Marginal lag reduction
Cons:
1) Mobile standby battery consumption is off the charts in all lollipop builds (No solution in sight yet)
2) Wave to wake on active display is disabled , can't get it to work without tasker (yes it was available in 4.4.4, although not advertised)
3) Internal space consumption is higher due to ART implementation
4) If you're an Xposed fan, the builds for Xposed right now are in the Alpha build stage .
5) Can't revert to 4.4.4 stock without chance of permanent bricking
Hope it helps

Hello. I actually searching for help with my phone and found this forum. I have the older moto x xt1058 (factory just the way it comes) it updated 4 days ago and I have already ordered a new phone diff brand. The phone is a complete different thing now.
Some of the issues include Bluetooth and wifi won't work if both on at same time, wifi connection is random, lots of lag time, turned off then back on a few times, drains battery like Super crazy crazy, and then I didn't like the changes in the way things look...like text messaging changed size and font, the keyboards changed ect.
Hopefully my phone is a fluke and other folks do much better.
Good luck to you and have a great day
