Note 4 running hot, and high battery drain - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,
My note 4 on 5.0.1 running any rom (stock, poprocks, TekHD) runs super hot. The area on the screen that is right below the camera is unpleasant to touch. When running a cpu temperature monitor I seem to identify around 60c and when Web browsing and scrolling though pages it'll go up to 70c. This also seems to be killing my battery life. Over 10 hours I'll be lucky to get 2 hours sot.
I've gotten wld and bbs and don't see any crazy wake locks that aren't supposed to be there. Largest one is my Google play music which I do use. 2nd up is Bluetooth, I'm guessing because of my android wear device. I've also done clean installs where I do a correct wipe then don't install any apps. Still horrible battery life, still lots of heat.
From reading about it sounds like the heat issue could be a bad device and I should get it replaced? Should I try picking up a new battery?
Over the course of writing this post, about 4 minutes I've gone from 17% to 10%.

Reinstall rom with factory kernel and install kernel adiutor apk for cpu control from google play. Im using rapture 3.0 without issues and battery pretty good and temp is normal.
Sent from my SM-N910T

Same problem here SM-N910G on 5.1.1 stock ROM. Installed a new genuine Samsung battery, NC. I hit about 60°C when at idle, 65°C when browsing. I wiped davlik cache and cache on teamwin, which seems to have helped a little. Battery is lucky to last 4-5 hours tops.
Did you find a solution? I thought it might have been from using Blitzwolf and Xaomi chargers, but it's the CPU getting hot, battery stays at 40°C

Are you using a custom kernel? I had an issue with a bad kernel setup and it restored my settings automatically which was the cause of my battery drain.

Milestone RC4 CM7 nadlabak draining battery FAST

Hey guys,
I'm running the latest release from nadlabak, 04.10 one.
I experienced battery issues on some previous releases as well, however i don't know if it's this release or what, but the battery usage is draining very fast!
I am not really running anything, I have liveprofile auto memory manager, and handset sms. liveprofile doesnt even really run, i barely use it so it should be either in the background or not running.
i looked at the battery usage stats, it shows email is using about 40% of the battery draining.
my phone is VERY warm, feels like the cpu churning through something... i can run at 52vsel with 1000mhz vrate. fine and still my battery is about 40% after 2 hours.
I reset to factory clock speeds and it drains the same if not faster!
not sure what's going on but its driving me nuts, google maps also shows to be running in the background, however i never turn it on, i reboot my phone, leave it as is and it shows maps is using 10% battery usage roughly when i havent even initiated it to be running(unless it always has a service in the background?)
i had releases from march that ran better, about 8 hours of battery life. and i believe even a april release was working fine. but now this latest release especially seems to suck up the battery, i dont know if its the releases or if something else has changed...but its very annoying holding a very WARM phone and having the battery get sucked up in 3 hours.
Looking at spare parts, does it sleep at all?
40% usage from email is high so something is wrong there but I doubt it's CM7.
Also, what AMM settings are you using?
Hi there, I'm running the following:
vmheap 40mb
amm: 6, 13, 24, 40, 51, 63.
any suggestions?
where do i find out if it sleeps, im in spare parts.
In Spare Parts, the first item is Battery History.
Go there and it will show how long your battery has been running (%) since unplugged.
If you select the top drop down list, select Partial Wake Usage to see which apps might be keeping the phone awake.
Where did you get those AMM numbers from?
I'd suggest my Balanced 3 (6-8-26-28-30-32) for a nice mix of free memory without being overly aggressive on the background apps.
If you use any of my scripts, disable AMM from having superuser permissions.
I had gotten the stats from another popular thread on this forum.
ill try your stats as well.
vmheap still 40?
also i still notice email is the one that has a huge bar graph usage on the partial usage stat page. not sure why email is being kept awake..
should i factory reset?
have you wiped cache/dalvik? If not do that.
Sent from my Milestone
I had wiped the caches multiple times, tried a lot of things, everything accept a factory reset.
I did a factory reset for the hell of it, set the amm settings as requested vmheap to 40.
everything seems to be running smooth and fine at 1000mhz 54vsel
and the battery usage is at 90% while being unplugged for 7 hours, will monitor to see if the usage drops substantially later on in the night but so far i think things may be fixed.
Battery usage is nearly constant.
That's not good at all.
Something is keeping it away.
What does spare parts show now for partial wake apps?
The partial usage is like 5% now vs what was like 50%. and email isnt even probably 2%. handcent sms is taking up the 5% roughly.
its at 80% after being on battery for 8 hours 26 mins. and i have probably used it for about 30-45 mins worth of on screen time, rest idle.
Oh wait, I think I misunderstood.
You meant that you had 90% left and only 10% used up, right?
If that's the case, that's pretty amazing.
I have expirienced that if I haven't done full wipe(factory reset) my battery is drainin like a crazy. That's happing in all roms I have used. So my opinion is to apply any update or now rom on clean Milestone
how to delete apps in android
i have recently started using android on htc hd2.. i am bit annoyed with the fact that i could not unistall a few apps which i am never going to use. eg liveprofile..and it keeps starting automatically
so could anyone tell me how to remove such apps?

Does your note heatup?

I've been using the note for a few days now, i've noticed that it heats up quite a lot. Under charging it is understandable... But even when the screen is on for is say 10-15 mins straight... Does anyone elses phone heat up too?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
yep, every smartphone I have used does that (GS1,GS2, Note, Tab 7" tab 10.1) and some feature phones do it (iPhone, HTC wildfire etc).
Think about it, dual core 1400mhz running, and batteries always heat up with heavy drain and charging.
Mine has normal temperature under regular use (IE a browser etc. - not really causing higher load), gets quite warm if playing a game for example (higher load, not sure how high).
How long does your battery last? (heat = energy)
I used to have over heat issues but eversince i use franco's kernel 6 the issue has gone away.
i use sfock LA4 with root, bloatware removed and franco's kernel. all good and no heatind issues even when charging.
There is an app called "Elixir" that can monitor the temp of the various sensors within the phone. I've used it on every device I put a custom kernel on. Setup a homescreen widget so you can see the temp at all times. If it tops 45c then you panic a little and let it cool down
which rom and kernel did u use?
Mine heats up only when I charge. I don't mind, I like warm stuff.
Mine gets pretty warm too, especially at extensive use and charging at the same time.
yeah mine gets warm too, especially when browsing using Dolphin browser. The highest temp it touch is 51 degrees. Other than that it quite ok. Usually temp between 28-31 degrees.
When I was on stock rom and connected to gps +charging at the same time, my note used to heat up to extreme temperatures. enough to make me want to shut it off to avoid any hardware damage to internal circuit. It used to become burning hot at the top part of the phone. Now I have LA4 rooted stock rom with bloatware removed and using franco's kernel #6. Now my phone barely gets warm when I am charging and using gps at the same time.

I am on rooted la4.
Exactly what is safe to remove in terms of "bloatware"?
Did you just flash franco kernal 6 with mobile odin over the rooted la4?
Yes, my phone used to heat to levels you couldn't even hold it or touch the screen or your finger would burn. That happened with GPS or PocketCloud. After putting up Franco's kernel, heating is totally gone.

flash francos kernel in recovery from cwm. I deleted all samsung apps and all the apps i wll never use. the list is long. there are threads where people list the apps that can be safely removed.
I'm in the boat as gent0r mine will get fairly warm when used under heavy work and charging. But its alarming at this point. Not like sarius where he thought it was melting his case!

mine always with <50c still acceptable for me
I used Franco's latest kernel and my Note's temperature suddenly went up.. it raised the heat more...
I reflash back to Abyss Note and the temperature is back to Normal again..
Usually heating issues are caused
1.) when your using Data Connection thru Carrier (surfing, auto-syncing emails, news feeds, twitter, facebook and etc.)
2.) when your playing graphic extensive games
3.) and lastly when your Note's display is always ON, all the time (like watching movies all the time.)
mine doesnt really heat up, except one time when using titanium backup. the process just stopped and the phone got extremely hot.
it never does that in normal usage though
we must remember we are taking battery temperature as an indication to CPU temperature. In reality your CPU could be getting fried at 50 degrees battery temp depending on circumstances. We news to access the CPU temp sensor if there is one. Does the phone shut off when overheating? Like a failsafe? Or is it just the hardware failing?
Edit - the reason I say this is I remember on the n900 forums a guy dismantled his overclocked phone which was dependent on battery temperature (safe temperatures were established and overclock was dependent on battery temp) and when he saw the state of the main board and scorching around the CPU he was very shocked.

Its always best to reboot 2 or 3 times after flashing a new rom or kernel. Also wiping cache n dalvik helps.
While flashing new kernel, always use kernel cleaning script. I have been using battery indicator pro till now, will try the mentioned sw 'elixir' n see the difference.
Franco v2, speedmod v1 are better kernels imo.

Fast battery consumption

Hello people.. I am having problems with my nook color again ... I have paranoid android 2.99 (using android 4.1.2) and in the first time after I have installed the rom, my battery was draining an acceptable percent of 3-4% per day (24 hours-idle mode). After I have played with it a bit and install some applications and games, the battery loses 12% per day I would like to know what background application drains the most of the battery, though I have uninstalled most of the applications.. Is there a way to check how much of the battery each application consumes? I want to uninstall it immediately. I have tried Cpu Spy as I read on other discussions, but it is irrelevant to my needs.
Thank you

That's pretty normal for the first few recharges after flashing. Let your Nook completely discharge and charge it all the way back up. By the third time it should be back to normal. You can find out what applications are using the battery under Settings, Applications, Battery Use.
Hi, thank you for the reply. There have been more than 3 recharges since installing this ROM. The battery life was longer right after installing the ROM but I don't know what have I done wrong that the battery life is shorter now(with the same ROM). I tried going to settings but there I have an option apps that lists all my applications and I cant see the battery consumption of the applications...thank you
Another thing that might work is toning down your prossecor. I have my max at 800mhz, and I get a few more hours of life, and you don't notice it to much.

frostysnowman3567, Thank you .. I will try and use Setcpu to get a proper use of the processor... even set it at the minimum of 300 mhz when deep sleep is active.
Fire Ball, I will install that application, sounds useful thanks
was runnig it with cm7 with excellent battery live several days, now trying cm10, battery drains way faster, it feels like you can watch it drain. anyone else experiencing the same and having a solution?

did you did a factory reset after install?
Mine is draining so fast. Even when turned off. I didn't do a factory reset after install because i dont want to lose any data. My maximum charge is 11% after 3 hours. I dont even know if i can flash anything because it's lowbat.
for me is ok. the battery life is good, and i got overheathing only when i did a first start after i installed it. try to install kernel aduitor and see if all governors are on "ondemand", and if all freqs are ok.
reinstalled and did everything as it should be but stll gets hot and quickly drains out battery sometimes not always
without using battery drains to 50% in few hours
Possible Solution to Over heating after lollipop install
I had the same issue of Xperia Z1 Compact over heating after lollipop install. I backed up all my data using Sony Companion and reset my phone to factory. After that my phone is working like a champ. No more over heating and battery life last over a day and half. Hope this help.
guys,
I had the same issue and im thinking to downgrade to kitkat for real
I have tried it.. No use. It will heat up in kitkat too. Really annoying.

How old is your device? Looks like the battery is having issues. Or maybe the motherboard is supplying over current to the processor.
Its about 2 yrs old. But the heating started just after lollipop update. Before it was ok, no problem was there.
having the same issue since update to lollipop. really annoying thing. battery drained in an half hour down to 89%. that just cant be normal.. phone is not rooted or anything.
Hi,
For those who are rooted and with a custom kernel, I have faced the same problem recently and after playing a bit with CPU configuration on "Pimp My Z1" app it seemed to work again.
First thing I did was reboot the device, that way I was sure that no app I've opened was draining my battery.
Second I opened the "Pimp My Z1" app and changed the configuration of CPU to:
Maximum: 1958MHz
Minimum: 300MHz
Governor: lionheart

Today I'm with 82% battery but with 59 minutes of screen on time (~70% brightness) and some more of music playing. Also using Stamina Mode. Heats a bit, but doesn't show any draining symptom.
If you still face overheating problems, I suggest downloading the Greenify app and hibernating many apps. That worked for me on S4 when it was with a similar problem.

Worked for me
I have the LG Leon for MPCS w/ 5.0.2 root-TWRP. I began experiencing this after flashing a sound engine mod. I also noticed my charging port pin was bent slightly. Another possibility was changing CPU gov-I/O-min. freq.
I flashed mod remove zip, then restored from Nandroid prior to, and fixed pin. Still had it.
BUT: I kept my phone on top of my AC unit vent for roughly 13 hours while it was on & plugged in, set brightness to night mode, 15 sec time out, and disabled daydream.
PROBLEM GONE.
Also set CPU back to reg. settings.
CPU has been steady 28-30 deg. C all day.
Hope this helps.

Hi guys, long time since I've been on here.
I have a S4 i9500, and I was having mega drainage issues. I installed Novalaunch, and disabled the samsung touchwiz crap - battery usage is SOO much better already. I have had lollipop for a few months now, and I did factory reset it, twice, and install all the apps manually via google play. It got so bad, that i HAD to run my phone with power save on ALL THE TIME, and even then, it would be pretty hungry. the other day, I ran it on full power(1.6ghz) and it chewed 40% in around 1 hour. All I was doing was had Pandora music on.
I have a tool called 'Cool Tools', and I monitored the IO activity bfore, and it show pretty high utilization all the time, even with the screen off. With Novalauncher, its hitting rock bottom(low), even while using it..
Its soo good now, to give you an idea - I charged my phone last night(around 9pm), and restarted it and unplugged the charger. I ran it on full power(power save OFF), over night, with data on, and it only chewed 15%. MASSIVE difference. I'm at 60% now, and I've been running Pandora for at least 3 hours now, and using some other apps as well. Its been 14 hours or so already.

Even I faced fast battery drain with Touchwiz launcher.
Now running custom ROM and seeing that CPU usage is lesser and battery stays longer.
However, nothing can beat Kitkat's battery usage. Lollipop, according to me, is a battery killer wrapped in material design for disguise.
Xperia z1 battery drain issue or problem
I FOUND THE MAIN CULPRIT FOR BATTETY DRAIN AFTER 5.1.1 LOLLIPOP UPDATE. Its the overheat control app. As you all may know that after first update from jellybean 4.2 to kitkat 4.4, the phone tends to get overheated while multitasking. Thus overheat control app eats up the battery and drain it when the phone starts getting hot.
I REQUEST ALL THE DEVELOPERS TO CHECK IT AND PROVE IF I M WRONG.
I m sure that Google will find the answer to the battery drain issue fix in overheat control app.

Very disappointed in OP3t battery life. Not sure what to do.

I'm coming from a OnePlus One. Unfortunately, I can't find reliable BLP571 replacement batteries in the U.S., so I purchased a new OP3t.
On the OPO, I have been running custom MM and N-based ROMs. When the OPO (currently running Nougat 7.1.1 on TugaPower 2.1) is sitting around doing nothing, I typically see my idle battery current drain at around 9 uA to 14 uA and Wakelocks around 10%. Of course, when I turn the screen on, these jump up.
On the OP3t, I have tried running both OOS 3.5.4 and the new TugaPower 4.0 (which is based on Nougat 7.1.1). When the OP3t is supposedly doing nothing, I saw an idle current of around 85 mA on OOS 3.5.4, and around 35 mA on TugaPower. I didn't check the Wakelocks on OOS 3.5.4, but the Wakelocks on TugaPower are around 93% awake time (!!!!).
When I wake up in the morning, the OP3t is down to around 75% battery. For reference, my OPO used to be around 98% overnight when the battery was new. Even now, my ancient OPO with a nearly useless battery is around 85% for the same overnight time period.
What can I do?
3.5.4 actually has drain issues, try 3.5.3
Even after the annoying wake-locks and the random battery drain that just happens because why not... I still manage to get 5-6 hours of SOT, I have managed to push it till around 9 hours if I keep the Bluetooth and data off; with Greenify and using the aggressive doze it has helped but I don't get any notifications until I turn my screen back on.. Which is fine with me, as I get texts and calls. It's much better than the nexus 6 and the galaxy s4 which would struggle to even get 4 hours of on screen time. There are plenty of people raising issues about battery life on the OnePlus3T even though its probably much than your last device. XDA also has plenty of threads already created talking about the same subject.
Edit - I'm on the latest nougat update 4.0.1
the 3T or OOS doesnt have any drain or bad battery issues.
the problem is user/user-app based.
sort out the app which is causing the problem.
I just made a post to a similar thread. It seems the battery issue is hit or miss. At any rate, please check my post here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70581453&postcount=9
Let me know if this helps you out. Look forward to feedback.

You stole my thunder.
Just kidding, but you're absolutely correct. I'm waiting to get my OP3T and then I will write a tutorial for users to help them out with the battery. Those 2 apps will be in my tut along with a few others that are helpful!
Weird, usually my phone, while idle of course, drains by 1% every 2 and a half to 3 hours. During use while im not playing games or anything im using pixel filter. Most time ive gotten is 9 hours 32 mins screen time. Im on 4.0.1 not rooted. Just uninstall apps u dont really need like amazon, youtube, facebook, tumblr and so on and use Firefox web browser. Firefox has background play for YouTube or any other audio source so you can stream music on Spotify soundcloud or whatever you want. I basically rely on Firefox for all internet things as if my phone were a PC. Saves time and battery because with 6gb ram my browser never slows down or reloads. Firefox is also really nice in the background consuming only 10mah every hour when not active or streaming audio. Cutting down ur app count will allow your device to doze longer, fetch less data and it certainly drains far less. Also if you're into this sort of thing, boot times are much quicker too.
Edit: sorry for the unedited massive paragraph here.
Another Edit: Make sure in case you want to use battery saver mode while streaming music to toggle Firefox to have unrestricted data usage in the data saver menu.
Check the link in my signature. My drain wasn't quite as bad but might help you figure it out. Good luck!
Thanks, guys! Greenify + ForceDoze seems to be helping a LOT! I'll need to let it run a few days to see the the real-world numbers.
I am having a problem adding apps to the ForceDoze Whitelist, though. Is that a known issue?

I've found that the whitelist appears blank until you add or remove an app, then the whole list will appear.
For me at times something appears to kick in in the background causing the CPU to spike and the phone to heat up. I can't figure out what it is though. When this isn't happening the battery drain is virtually zero and the phone flatlines overnight ,when it kicks in,the battery loses about 10% an hour on idle. I think there might be faulty drivers or something in the ROM causing this?! It's not apps as it happens to me on a completely debloated ROM with no apps. This is on Lineage and OOS. I've never seen this before on the phones I've had.

OOS 4.01 - I am experiencing exactly what you describe at 12%/hr and I have done literally all of the suggestions here. I have greenify, force doze, turned off location, disabled swift, did a factory reset and installed only 1 or 2 apps- and still I can watch battery drain with:
4 hours off charger and down to 44% with:
Kernel (android OS) 42.5%
Android System 33.7%
Google Play services 2.4%
Blah...Blah... (much smaller %'s)
What the heck could be causing this kind of drain? It seems to flatline when not in use for a while...
thoughts? Love the phone., but it is not usable like this....
4.0.1....No battery saving apps..

Greenify + ForceDoze = problem solved. I see 1% drained per hour at the very worst.

Hello,
I usually use Greenify Paid Version + Amplify Paid Version but only in 6.X roms in 7.X Xposed isn´t released yet....
Do you recommend use Greenify + ForceDoze (I never heard about this app) even without Xposed?
Thanks in advance.
I am still struggling with battery performance on my new OP3t.
I am running TugaPower N10 (LineageOS 7.1.1) + Better Battery Stats + Battery Monitor Widget + ForceDoze + Greenify.
While my wakelocks seem to be pretty short now, my lowest average current drain is 35 mA. For reference, my old OnePlus One had a lowest average current drain of 7 mA, or about 5x more on the OP3t.
My battery meter reflects the higher drain.
I have the same apps installed, maybe even some less.
Looking for more assistance ...
I'm on 4.0.3 OOS and using Franco kernel, 2% drain during all night, 5 hours of screen on time and still 56% battery, check what is wrong with your apps, or move from Lineage to OOS, is simply better.
EDIT: I'm not using any app like ForceDoze or Greenify
I'm not dissapointed.
