Help needed with file transfer - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I am trying to transfer files from my computer (Windows 10) to my phone (Android 5.0.2), but it only says "preparing to copy" and then freezes there. Sometimes canceling the copy is enough, but sometimes it freezes the explorer so I have to disconnect the USB plug.
I tried with PC companion (which redirects to windows explorer), Media Go, Total commander. No success.
I saw that many people had/have this problem but I couldn't find any helpful answer though... So if someone experienced this and managed to get through, please help. I'm really desperate.
Thanks

Try transferring over Bluetooth see if that works
Sent from my Xperia Z using XDA Free mobile app

Bluetooth works. But I am trying to transfer through USB cable since I don't have bluetooth on my computer.

well, thanks to windows 10 for that :] If you would read they ToU you would know that they probably make copy of this data and send them to microsoft servers, that why its dont work :]
But seriously. go to device manager and check if your xperia is visible as device(in usb controllers and other devices)
If you dont see anything, keep this device manager window active unplug phone, plug it again and see the difference on list.
Then select this device, uninstall it from your PC, unplug your phone, and plug it again.
After next time you plug it all drivers would install again and try to transfer files again.
If this dont help check your phone with scan tool that windows have in proprietaries.
Also, because of flaps in our xz, I very often use WiFi transfer, its almost the same speed.
Plug your device, open Settings menu on phone , go to "Xperia connection" at the end you have "connection via USB"
There you have "associate with PC" click it and then go to your PC, My computer select phone(right click) and from list choose "configure network" wait for configuration(sometimes its stop responding, just leave it for few minutes).
After that you can connect to your phone just by clicking that "connect to Computer" in xperia settings.
You have access just like via USB to phone and SD card, speed is almost the same.

Hey Akinaro,
Thanks for your detailed response.
My device is visible as a device, I can access SD card and internal memory, well no problem there, I already uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers.
I also tried other USB ports but no success. Tried to use the cable with other phones, it works fine. Tried another computer, same problem.
When I try to plug the phone to rear usb port, copy works for like, one or files, then freezes. It then says that the device has been disconnected. Seems like the usb connection kinda drops...
I will try to associate with PC and let you know.

Safetly Unpluggin Tilt From Pc

Hello Ive been expericing some minor connections with my tilt some times i connect it to the pc and it sync and everything but when i unplug it and plug it back some times the pc wont reconize it I have to soft recet the device for the pc to reconice it.Is This an Issue or normal? Is there a way Safetly Unplug The Tilt From the Pc? I Just unplug It when Im Finish.
you must right click from the task bar and select eject device. Or something or other. It located by the clock on windows computers. Just right click the icon and select unplug|eject|unmount|etc... It will safely sync everything so that you can unplug your device safely.

Graxias!!!
You probably don't need to do this for your phone. And if you do, you should look to change the device properties. "Safely Eject" is for USB devices that the system has identified as being capable of supporting write caching, and your phone shouldn't fall into this category. As an example, I've a 2GB SD card in my laptop for Vista's SpeedBoost, and that I definitely do need to "Safely Eject." But a USB CD-ROM and my phone don't require it.
If yours is creating errors, then fire up the device properties and see if you can turn off write caching. You really shouldn't have it on for this device.

Active syncronizer conflicts with Garmin Mobile XT

For some reason Active syncronizer doesnt connect anymore with my PC and everytime I unplug the USB connection on the PC a window pops out on my cell phone asking me if I want to re-install Garmin Mobile XT. This is so weird! Anybody knows how to solve this without unistalling Garmin Mobile?
Thank you,
Sounds like when you are connecting to PC you are connecting as a USB drive. ActiveSync won't detect phone because it is presenting the internal memory as USB drive. Your phone also won't be able to access internal storage while it is in USB drive mode. When you disconnect the phone the internal storage is able to now be accessed by the phone and it runs any items that are set to autorun (Garmin has an autorun installer that isn't removed when installed) which will be why it keeps trying to install.
Thank you Kevlah, but what should I do now?
I think it all started while I was talking on the phone and accidently touch something on the screen with my ear and messed with some settings...
You need to check:
Start > Settings > Connections > USB to PC
Make sure it is setup like the screenshot below.
That should then give you the option to choose ActiveSync or USB drive whenever you connect the USB cable. Choose ActiveSync before it times out and you should be OK. When you disconnect from ActiveSync the Garmin installer should not start.
If you use USB Disk Drive and want to stop Garmin trying to install when you disconnect from USB Disk Drive mode you will need to delete or rename the garmin auto installer (probably in Garmin folder - I can't remember where mine was as I've removed Garmin now - I couldn't get the code to work for Internal GPS).
Thank you Kevlah. It was just that. Somehow I unclicked it with my ear.
No problem, glad it's sorted now
I suggest just deleting the autorun file along with the directory it is in.. mine was in a folder called 2577. I deleted the whole folder and everything is honky dory. ( if you want it back you just have to run the quesetupPPC.exe in garmin/apps/wm/)
If you don't delete it ever time you want to transfer some file ( at a reasonable rate ) and you have to use the storage drive option and you will get that annoying popup every time.
there are no ill effects deleting that autorun and it's directory

[Q] Can't connect my Captivate through USB anymore

Hi everyone,
I'm having issues connecting my Samsung Captivate to my computer. For about a week, it worked fine, I was able to transfer files to my phone but recently I noticed that the "USB connected" notification is not showing on the phone when plugged in to the computer.
Now, when I plug in my phone to the computer it just charges but doesn't comunicate with my computer. A friend of mine bought the same phone right after I did and he gets the "USB connected" connected when he plugs in his.
I tried using his USB cable but again, the phone is not recognized by Windows nor the phone detects it is connected to the computer. I've tried installing several USB drivers that I've come across on several forums, but nothing. I even downloaded and updated Kies to the latest version, but still nothing.
My phone is unlocked and NOT rooted, and I'm using Windows 7 x64. I've set the USB Settings to Mass Storage, even to Ask on Connection, but it doesn't ask anything when I connect the phone to a USB on my computer.
Sometimes Windows knows there is a device connected but says it couldn't recognize it.
I already did a factory reset, but the issue was not solved. I've tried connecting it to other computers, but still hasn't been able to connect my phone correctly.
What could it be?
Thanks!
Hmm. You have Mass Storage selected and up-to-date USB drivers. Try selecting USB-Debugging and Stay Awake in the Development option of your phone. If that doesn't fix it, then I have a few other ideas.
Make sure the usb door is completely open, it should click into place, some users have reported this solves their usb issues.
I did what you told me, but still my phone ain't recognized by Windows nor my phone is aware that it has been conected to a computer
What other ideas do you have in mind?

Have you tried using a different USB outlet on your computer? I had this same issue when I plugged my phone up using the USB outlet on the front of my computer then when I tried the one on the back of my computer it worked just fine.
Are you running a launcher app? I use launcher pro and can't connect until I change back to the default launcher with home switcher and launch it.

First off, think back. If it worked for a week and then suddenly stopped, what changed? Maybe you updated something on Windows or changed something on your phone. There's a reason it just stopped.
You can try using a free program called USBDeview.
It might do the trick for you and help you install the correct drivers. I'm thinking you no longer have them.
1. Download USBDeview (link is above)
2. Plug your phone in and open the program. Find all the HTC drivers-delete them
3. Unplug your phone and plug it back in
4. The correct drivers should install automatically
You can also try updating the drivers manually.
Galaxy S drivers (These are for ADB, but will work fine)
1. Click the Start Menu on your computer and right click "Computer"
2. Choose "Manage" --> it will ask you to continue --> "Device Manager"
3. Plug you phone in and look for it to pop up, probably under Portable Devices
4. Right click --> "Properties" --> "Update Driver" --> "Browse" --> "Let Me Pick" --> and navigate to the location you extracted the drivers to.
This is most likely a driver issue. I doubt your phone is messed up. You'll get it eventually. I also had a hard time getting my Captivate to connect. After uninstalling and reinstalling my drivers (more than once) it finally worked. One last thing, for now. When you uninstall drivers, also make sure you don't have any installed under your program list. As in, Control Panel --> Uninstall a program. Good luck!

I just did the new AT&T update and mine is now having this problem. I have to manually go into manage applications > usb settings > mass storage to get it to work now

I did all that yesterday, but the device ain't listed in the USBDeview nor it shows up in the Device Manager
did you finally fix this problem? because I'm having the same issue here
Same here. It was working fine, I could connect to Kies, transfer music in Media mode and see both sd drives in Mass Storage mode. Then I rooted today and now I get nothing. In anything but Kies mode I get the Windows Bong of Recognition, but still not visible in Explorer. Also, my Home screen stays active instead of switching to the USB animation like it did before. I know this can't be a consequence of rooting the phone, can it?
EDIT: More weirdness, with the phone connected in Mass Storage mode if I look at My Computer in Explorer there are 2 extra drives showing, but they are greyed out and when I click on either of them it asks me to insert a card as the drive is empty. WTF???
UPDATE: I unrooted and managed to get my USB connection back to working. It is still a bit flaky as I sometimes have to disconnect/reconnect several times before it works, but at least it now works although it sometimes loses sync in the middle of transferring a file. Can't imagine why simply rooting the phone would cause the loss of USB connectivity. I am going to reroot and see if it occurs again.
OK, a rerooted the phone and this problem is now back. I have no problem connecting while in debugging mode. I installed OCD (non-Market apps mod) and when I turn off debugging and connect I get the Windows bong and see the USB icon in the Notification bar, but the MTP screen never comes up and I can't see the phone in Explorer (Mass Storage mode) or in WMP (Media mode). Kies can;t see it in that mode, either. I really don't want to have to unroot every time I want to look at the phone contents. Any ideas? PLEASE!
I'm having a similar problem - I installed the Perception ROM and immediately afterwards I can't see the USB connection at all from my PC or my Mac. The USB icon on the phone does not come up either.
I'm trying to get my hands on a different cable - but the weird thing is when I plug the USB into my computer the phone starts charging for like half a second and then stops.
This is really annoying. I tried changing the rom to Cognition 3.02 but that didn't change anything.
There are a few topics on this here on the forum - I would recommend the following:
How are you rooting your phones? Nobody has said exactly how they are doing this. Are you using recommended rooting methods? Or are you using some app found on the market?
Make sure you have USB De-Bugging is turned on.
Make sure you have it listed as ask on connection.
For those who can see the drives in Windows...
Plug in your phone and then pull down your notification bar and click on the USB connected message. It will give you an option there to mount your SDCard(s) to Windows allowing you to transfer files.
Kies is junk - I'd recommend uninstalling it as it seems to cause more issues then it solves.
Use the drivers I have posted in the Q&A section (these are the ones that are linked in Design Gears Odin 1 Click Back to Stock post btw) - but I would try and COMPLETELY removing the pre-existing drivers before installing the new ones.
Make sure the USB Cable is plugged into the back USB port that is directly on your motherboard - this will ensure it's not a computer/hardware related issue.
I know of one user who had to go through his computer and manually remove all remnants of other drivers. I have my phone connected to both a Windows XP 32bit and a Windows 764bit systems and have been lucky to not have any USB issues.
If none of that works - I'd suggest taking it to your nearest AT&T/Rodgers shop and see if they can get the phone to connect (make sure it's back to stock!). If not they should warranty replace the device.

This isn't my first rodeo... But to answer your questions:
I used the rooting method posted in XDA forums - the one-click rooting.
I've used the drivers included in the xda-forum. Not the kies software.
The only thing that changed was the loading of a new custom rom. The cable works (confirmed on my friend's phone). I can't get odin to restore back to stock because I can't get the computer to recognize the phone in either normal or in download mode. I've restored to stock using the jh7 in the stickied q&a thread
I don't think it's a hardware issue either - I think it's software-based. I'm going to try to take it to an at&t store today at lunch to see what they say.
I also have that problem only I noticed it when I cleared the dalvik cache. It messed up the auto rotate so it was always sideways and now I have no connectivity to the PC. Let me know how ATT treats you.

[Q] Galaxy Note wont connect to pc

Hello forum !
i have used a couple of hours now trying to find a solution to my problem both here on the site but also on the internets.
i just recently became the happy owner of a Note, but i have been completely unable to connect it to any of my pc's ive had a galaxy i9000 that i didnt have any problems with but with my note it wont work.
under win7 64bit - when i plug the usb cable a "boc opens" in the drop down menu called MTP and when i klick that nothing happens, ive trid the varies ways of removing the sd card unmounting it etc. and debugging and so on but wont work.
it randomly connected once but then it dissapeared from my computer.
under winXP 32bit it just says usb device not recognised, i really wanna root this thing so i can play with the true power of this amazing device.
and on both pc's ive tried with kies and driver packs both together and seperately.
anyone out there that can help me out with this problem ?
cheers
and happy new year

Before connecting it to the PC with the cable, click "connect storage to pc" in the USB settings. After clicking it, then it will ask you to connect to pc. If you connect to pc before clicking it will not connect.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
Hello i have done that but the same happens ive done it like it says i should i just dont get why my pc wont recognise it , when i press it and then it waits for me to plug it in, i do that the dialogue box shuts and then nothing happens besides windows saying unrecognised device connected
Strange, Mine connect fine just like how marinervijay mentioned. Go to Settings > Wireless> Usb Utilities and press connect first and then insert your USB, then press connect USB. Voila. There should be a window prompting to open in your windows just like when u insert a flashdrive to ur computer.
iknow its supposed to work like that.
the problem is that it doesnt work :/
Okay, have u tried resetting your Note to factory default?
no i havent tried that, because its all new it didnt work since i got it, i never thought that that might help, ill give it a go.
thx
On another, you might have a defective USB given to you by ur retailer. Perhaps you can contact them somehow and ask them to replace your USB?
do you mean the USB cable delivered with the phone ?
Cheers
Yes. Could be a defect. I'd suggest you check with your retailer if it is replaceable if none of what mentioned is working for you.
Hi,
Have you ticked USB debugging? Its under Settings>Apps>Development
Then it should show usb connection in notification tab, tap it and set usb storage as on.
There may be few problems here so I will suggest different solutions, one might work for you
1. Turn off your antivirus and connect, it should work, see after connecting mobile that does it install something near "Bottom clock"?, open "my computer" see if it gives you N7000 (give it a minute). sometimes your computer settings are a problem
2. If no, Install latest Kies on your computer as it downloads Samsung drivers for your phone
3. after connecting 1st time, computer takes some time to recognize your mobile--be patient--
4. if all of above doesnot work, restart computer, connect USB to another (or same) port (turn off antivirus) and see
5. Nothing, try in Setting>Applications>Development>debugging Mode
6. if not, try on another computer
7. still does not connect, change USB cable
8. Still nothing there might be a issue with your device, but I will not conceive that every quickly, trying all above few times should resolve the issue..

Hey,
I am able to get USB storage, and I got root access thru the batch files and help provided in this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360

USb Problem
Hi I've had the same problem.
I have been using the Note quite happily as a Mass USB storage since early December. Plugged it in this morning and I don't get anything. I have also tried the debugging and all the other things listed. Here's what I get:
Usb debugging on - just a sound and a charging indication
Usb debugging off -usb connected Mtp connected on the notification pull down page. When I click on notification it just shuts the window.
I have tried dialling *#7284# and selecting USB PDA which didin't do anything for me but others seem to have had some luck. See this link:
blog.vacs.fr/index.php?post/2010/12/24/How-to-repair-the-USB-not-detected-problem-on-Android-Samsung-phones
I will be rebooting tonight but I don't really want to.
only the Samsung USB wire works
I had this problem today. The Note would never connect the USB or external storage. I searched and found this thread.
I then noticed it was another USB cable (I gave about 1,000 now!). I tried the Samsung one, and it worked first time.
It is annoying, because these cables are normally swappable with any device. It appears Samsung have defined their own standard. The great thing about standards, of course, is that there are some many to choose from!
USB cable was defect - and replaced
Thanks for the help everyone

Wireless Media Transfer: Cannot Pair With Windows 7 PC

I have a new Z3C and want to use the Wireless Media Transfer option but I cannot get the device to pair with a Windows 7 x64 PC (I've tried two PCs now). I have the device in MTP mode, but when I right-click on "Xperia Z3 Compact" and choose the "Network Configuration" option the wizard hangs while trying to transfer the settings. I even installed PC Companion, and made sure everything is up-to-date but I just cannot get it to work.
I want to use this feature so I can access my micro SD card without messing with the flaps: transferring music and tag editing using mp3tag are essential to me and I don't want to wear out those delicate little flaps!
Well I tried pairing wireless with Win. 7 and failed too, don't know exactly what's the problem. My suggestion would be to use ES explorer though. You can add your PC to the LAN tab by entering the internal IP and just copy to the internal memory (no SD card access thanks to Google). From there the preinstalled File Commander can move your music to SD.

I have a new Z3C and want to use the Wireless Media Transfer option but I cannot get the device to pair with a Windows 7 x64 PC (I've tried two PCs now). I have the device in MTP mode, but when I right-click on "Xperia Z3 Compact" and choose the "Network Configuration" option the wizard hangs while trying to transfer the settings. ...

Had the same issue on Win7, hang while transferring settings. On the 3rd attempt it did pair successfully. I noticed that windows was installing a device driver on the first pairing attempt, maybe that just needed to complete first.
The Transfer Settings stage does take a while, so it may just look like it's hanging. How long did you try it? Also you may need to allow portable devices access in your firewall (as the popup advises).
I left it a good 10 minutes. No drivers were being installed and no firewall popups appeared (I don't use the Windows software firewall).
Same here (64bit) win 8.1 I let it run until the 'can't complete' dialogue shows
Having the same issue here - anyone else fixed it until now ?
It happens to me at first... But if you will make screen time out more like 10 + min, while pairing configuration it does connect. Its because of screen goes off then it wont connect.

What helped me was making sure the screen didn't turn off, might be an idea too to temp disable Stamina while it goes through its process, it does take a while.

I want to use this feature so I can access my micro SD card without messing with the flaps: transferring music and tag editing using mp3tag are essential to me and I don't want to wear out those delicate little flaps!

I had the same problem, solved it this way (hope I remember correctly)
on phone:
- set screen sleep to 30 minutes (Settings - Display - Sleep)
- turn off stamina mode (Settings - Power Management)
-plug into PC with USB
on PC:
- "Computer", right click "Xperia Z3 Compact" and select "Network Configuration"
- Click through with "Next/OK" until you get the screen that says something about "transfering settings" (or something like that) where it seemed to hang on previous attempts.
...and now the most important part - WALK AWAY!! Make a sandwich or something, come back in 30 mins and all should be OK - it's not actually hanging, just looks unresponsive while it does it's thing - be patient.
Good luck!
I did pair with PC using USB. The problem I have is that it hangs for 1 or 2 minutes while trying to connect to PC with WI-FI. Then it fails. I try for like 15 times, then for no reason it works. It only happens when I'm using my home wi-fi. I tried to connect with a friend's wifi, and it worked in a few seconds.
