I'm on Verizon, rooted and unlocked, currently running LMY47Z. I just got an OTA alert for an android system update - is it LMY48I?
I'm looking for confirmation since it seems to have the same version number as LMY47Z (5.1.1). Thanks!
EDIT: I flashed LMY48I through fastboot and it works fine. Apparently the only fix is for that MMS exploit, nothing major.
Probably not but if you are rooted don't matter. Can't flash the update.
You can flash the radio and bootloader(firmware only), if you want I, and then you'll be on LMY47I. If your on a custom ROM then your system is whatever build they want to label it. Data, recovery and boot are not necessary. I updated from E to Z by simply flashing radio and bootloader in twrp.

Hi... I'm in the same boat, sort of. I have LMY47D.
I just discovered the link on Google to the OTA for the Nexus 6 to get to LMY48I. But the link text said "shamu LMY48I from LMY47Z." I guess what I really need is "shamu LMY48I from LMY47D" but something tells me that will never exist. So my question is, can I just apply the LMY47Z to LMY48I OTA via sideload? I know how to do it with the Nexus Root Toolkit.
Any advice would be appreciated!

radio and bootloader do not get you an update, system is what gets you the actual update. and you didnt mention it anywhere.

Good to know. I'm wanting to flash to it as well...but regarding my previous post, do you or anyone else know if I'm on LMY47D if it's safe to use the "shamu LMY48I from LMY47Z" OTA file? I'm not LMY47Z, I'm on LMY47D.
Thanks

It's most likely fine to go from LMY47D to LMY48I, since flashing the system.img file overwrites the entirety of the OS (note: I only ever flash boot.img, system.img and the radios). Though if you're cautious, take a look at the list on the nexus image site, and try flashing from LMY47D to LMY47Z, then to LMY48I.
Thank you for the response... the Nexus images are full images, so I could (should?) probably just flash the entire LMY48I image.

No. The OTA file will not work if your phone is on LMY47D, and your OTA file expects LMY47Z
Edit: See http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/ref-nexus-6-stock-ota-urls-t2906493 - there is an OTA link in the first post that will get you from LMY47D to LMY47Z, and there is another OTA link there that will then take you from LMY47Z to LMY48I

If using the factory images, no need to jump thru' multiple images. Just pick the right image that you want and flash it.

I've given up on Google posting LMY47M factory image, it looks like it'll never happen.
So I have LMY47D and want to go to LMY47M since I'm on T-Mobile,
Is there a way to do that without losing apps, apps settings, and system settings ?
Thanks!

Its hard to say with the information available to us.
Is your bootloader unlocked?
The maker of the Nexus toolkit has gotten tired of waiting too. I believe he's working on a special build for those of you stuck in this situation. Check out his thread in the developer section for more details

If the bootloader is locked, data will be lost by unlocking it. If it is unlocked, a quick flash of the 5.0.2 system and boot image, followed by a sideload of the ota would suffice

The only checks made by the OTA are /system and /boot. Bootloader and radio are irrelevant as unlike system and boot, they are not patched. They are replaced in full when doing an OTA. Recovery is also irrelevant as it is replaced by scripts in /system on first boot after upgrade.
So yeah, if he has a custom recovery now, he'll need stock recovery to flash the OTA, but it does not matter which version.

Lol, yeah I haven't had enough coffee yet.
I recently unrooted my Moto X 1053 DevEd (GSM) in order to accept the Lollipop 5.1 OTA. I got the update and it's working great.
Now I want to re-root my phone, but first I want to be sure that I have a copy of stock recovery.img for Lollipop 5.1.
How can I back up recovery.img from my phone without my phone being rooted?
Thanks!
is temp booting custom recovery still possible... I haven't messed around with stuff in a while, but I think if you can temp boot twrp recovery (fastboot boot twrp) you might be able to use it to back up the stock recovery... you should google for more info on that, make sure it doesn't flash instead of boot.
otherwise you can't backup stock recovery without root. it's kind of a catch 22: you want to back up stock recovery before you root, but you can't do that on the device without root.
normally you can get the recovery from the stock firmware zip file. but I don't think Motorola is handing them out for 5.1 yet - if they are then it will be in that file. if not I suppose the next best thing is to rummage through the OTA file. I haven't unzipped it myself but it has to be in there right? some info that might help: the recovery size is 10mb. I can see it with the DiskInfo app, along with its block partition name mmcblk0p34, although it probably won't be named that in the zip file idk... anyway you can find the OTA here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9Eu943ka0GfQVVsdS13eHhZaU0/view?pli=1
That is a really, really helpful post, dtg7. I had hoped Moto would have posted the firmware, but I guess I'm too impatient. As I didn't have a separate copy of the OTA, I'm doing as you suggested and grabbing the OTA from the site you linked to. I'll try to extract the recovery.img file from there. I'll post my results.
Yes, this is a classic catch 22, as you say.

This is precisely my problem. I get semi-proficient with phone stuff every now and then when I'm changing things around, but then I forget almost everything I need to know to do the most basic geek maneuvers. When I had an HTC Sensation, which was a favorite for ROM-makers and modders, I was swapping out the ROM nearly every day between meals. With the Moto X I haven't done this much, maybe because I've gotten older, but mainly because there don't seem to be as many custom ROMs for the Moto X (nor is as much need for them, with Xposed and with a decent stock ROM.

Isn't that a link to KitKat 4.4.4 (i.e., 213.44.1)?
I've got Lollipop 5.1 on my phone, and "About Phone" lists it as 222.21.15.
It's actually system.img from 222.21.15 that I'm trying to get ahold of.

I *did* find the 4.4.4 recovery.img in the uncompressed file I requested and received from Moto. It seems like Moto sometimes uses the same recovery.img from release to release, but I'd be skittish about using this with stock 5.1 until someone can give it the all-clear. As of right now (27 june 15, 9:00 GMT), Moto hasn't posted stock 5.1.

I'm having difficulty figuring out how to approach the update. I'm on the XT1095 running 22.21.11.victara_tmo.tmo.en.US, TWRP, and root. The only guides I've seen are supposed to update from 23.11.14.
Is the file here the right file? How do I return to stock properly?

Yes, on that page download the full 5.0 factory image. Then flash it to your phone. After that you will be on stock, unrooted, and factory recovery and can take the OTA. The OTA should appear when you look for updates on your phone after that, no need to sideload, well unless you want to, lol.

Hello,
Please help me get any OS back to my XT1053 for now. Here's what happened:
1) I unlocked the bootloader, rooted my XT1053, stock recovery. Then last week I tried updating it to 5.1 official version via OTA. It failed due to files mismatch (maybe due to using apps that need root like Adaway). So I downloaded 4.4.4 STOCK version from Moto website, flashed boot.img, system.img and followed all the steps given here: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images
Once the phone booted properly into 4.4.4, I tried 5.1 OTA and it worked fine. Then I flashed TWRP and SU to get root (I lost root when I flashed STOCK 4.4.4).
2) Everything was fine except that whenever I rebooted, my phone would Optimize ALL the apps. I Googled a lot and apparently this happened to many folks and there was no solution.
3) Today, I thought I will try and fix it by sideloading the 5.1 OTA zip (I thought the regular OTA style installation that I did of 5.1 over mfastboot style installation of 4.4.4 had something to do with it. I know, this was stupid of me!)
4) So, today I went to TWRP and tried to flash 'Blur_Version.213.44.1.ghost_row.Retail.en.US.zip'. I am 100% certain that this was the file that I copied from /cache after OTA had downloaded the file last week and I had saved it locally on PC and in SD on phone. However, this flashing gave me an error saying that it expected either 4.4.4 KXA or 5.1 but that my system was 4.4?? So the flashing failed and my OS is gone. How can I get ANY OS back? Here are the things that I tried so far:
1) Installed RSD Lite and I am downloading XT1053_TMO_RETAIL-US_4.4.4_KXA21.12-L1.29.1_2_cid9_CFC_1FF.xml.zip file from http://www.filefactory.com/folder/dd05c058d3ff8dbe/?sort=created&order=DESC&show=100&page=1 as I type this out now. HOWEVER, I think I shouldn't use it as I read KidJoe saying not to downgrade. (KidJoe's comments are here http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/info-tip-web-sites-official-leaked-roms-t2923347)
2) THEREFORE, I was wondering if I could simply flash a higher or equivalent version of ROM. Since we don't have an official 5.1 flashable zip right now, can I use 5.1.1 by CM? It's present here: http://primehowto.com/install-andro...le-moto-x-xt1053-2013-via-cm12-1-nightly-rom/
3) If yes to point# 2 above, I have a small problem. My phone is not detected by 'adb devices; in TWRP recovery mode. My battery is 11%. Could that be the issue?
I KNOW THIS WAS A LONG POST. I JUST WANTED TO GIVE ALL THE INFO. PLEASE HELP ME GET ANY OS ONTO THE PHONE AND THEN I WILL WAIT FOR THE 5.1 SBF TO BE AVAILABLE. THANKS A LOT IN ADVANCE....

No, I didn't try mfastboot of 'gpt' from 5.1 update file 'Blur_Version.213.44.1.ghost_row.Retail.en.US.zip'. I don't see an 'mboot' or 'boot' file in it though. I do see 'gpt'. Also, in fastboot mode it says "Charger connected" instead of "USB connected". I think that's due to the low battery too?

Would you know if 'Blur_Version.213.44.1.ghost_row.Retail.en.US.zip' file is the OTA 5.1 file? I think that's how the naming convention goes i.e. the name is set to the system version on which it is going to be updated NOT the system version that it will be updated to. I don't know why this flash failed though. I can give you the exact error that I get when I try flashing this if that helps? Thanks!
Shoot the error. If it's security downgrade, again flash gpt and mboot from Ota 5.1.
I will have to verify the name of Ota as its critical info.

When I tried flashing "Blur_Version.213.44.1.ghost_row.Retail.en.US.zip" file (which I still think is the OTA 5.1 zip), I get this error:

This is where I got burned today. The above error wiped out my OS. I was on 5.1, I don't know why it says I have 4.4....

Okay, so I fixed it. At least got an OS for now .. This is what I did.. I took a chance and went ahead with these steps:
1) Extracted files from Stock TMO 4.4.4 file 'TMO_RETAIL_XT1053_4.4.4_213.44.1.ghost_row.Retail.en.US_MR4_CFC.tgz' got from Moto website.
2) Modified 'flash.bat' file to have below commands:
SET mfastboot=mfastboot.exe
%mfastboot% getvar max-download-size
%mfastboot% oem fb_mode_set
%mfastboot% flash partition gpt.bin
%mfastboot% flash motoboot motoboot.img
%mfastboot% reboot-bootloader
%mfastboot% flash logo logo.bin
%mfastboot% flash boot boot.img
%mfastboot% flash recovery recovery.img
%mfastboot% flash system system.img
%mfastboot% flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
%mfastboot% erase modemst1
%mfastboot% erase modemst2
%mfastboot% flash fsg fsg.mbn
%mfastboot% erase cache
%mfastboot% reboot
3) It failed with 'partition', 'motoboot', 'logo'. Everything else was successful.
4) My phone booted into 4.4.4 now.
It's funny but I think I have successfully downgraded from 5.1 to 4.4.4... That means, my main system file was never upgraded to 5.1?? It's late and I want a phone for tomorrow so I won't try 5.1 tonight. But it would be great if experts could pitch in. How did I downgrade from 5.1 to 4.4.4?
Anyway, thanks for your help. Your comment about 'gpt' made me think "maybe my phone won't hard brick if I install 4.4.4 again".. and it didn't!
CHEERS!
You can downgrade Fri 5.1 to 4.4 without flashing gpt and mboot. Wait for full 5.1.
Excellent man. Check your bootloader version, it's probably lollipop. So don't take update yet.
I thought we couldn't downgrade without bricking? Anyway, I am getting notification to update to 5.1 via OTA. I'm ignoring until I understand what's happening. Many try to skip GPT.BIN and MOTOBOOT.IMG... but when you have a version missmatch (gpt/motoboot from one rom, and rest from another), you increase your chance of bricking should you apply an OTA update zip in the future. And you'll likely end up with features not working or extra "bugs" that wouldn't otherwise appear.
For those who say "its safe to downgrade"... I'll point you to -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/info-warning-risks-downgrading-impacts-t3058202 and ask you to view the 7 links near the end of the first post as just a few examples.
Hey KidJoe, I could really use your help. I didn't want to downgrade but I had no choice as I couldn't re-install 5.1 (hence created this thread). It's good that I didn't brick when I reverted to 4.4.4 from 5.1 but I am skeptical of taking the 5.1 OTA now.
Pls look at the screen shot that I attached in my previous post. Also, my BL version is 30.BE (sha-34b7ccb, 2015-04-22 12:57:17). I have Stock Recovery KXA21.12-L1.29.1
How can I get a perfect installation of 5.1.. By perfect I mean none of the files left behind in the old version.
Appreciate your help!

Hitdroid, do you mind sharing your 5.1 OTA file for xt1053.
I'm in the same situation as you. Got 5.1 OTA a few weeks ago, rooted it and installed TWRP. Then I accidentally installed my 4.4.4 backup which erased my 5.1 install.
I just installed CM 5.1 as a stopgap but i'd like to return to near stock so i'm following this thread.
as I thought, you have a 5.1 BL.
Gotta flash manually when sbf/ROM is available

Because of your bootloader, the safest way is wait for the 5.1 SBF to be posted (since you have an XT1053, it will be posted on Moto's web site, and you don't have to rely on leaks)... But I have no idea how long that will take.
Now, you could try to take the OTA, but I've seen enough bricks to say.. If it was my phone... I'd wait.
I'm at work so will share the file once I go home. But I think we should wait for 5.1 SBF as @KidJoe and @hbenz2008 have stated.

Does anyone know where I can find the latest modem files for the Canadian Moto X (XT1097)? The only ones I can find at the present moment are from KitKat .

I'm glad it worked Keep them backed up, just in case. I actually have the whole firmware, which I flashed on my phone.
Yep, I'm definitely keeping these modem files. I'm running retbr 6.0 with these modems and I haven't had a problem thus far.

Someone else asked for it before:

I have since updated my phone to Android 6.0 (RETCA), but there's no full firmware for it yet.

Thanks!
Another quick question. I'm on Wind in Canada, but running a rooted 5.1 (RETBR). I'd like to do the OTA for Android 6.0 (RETCA). This is my first non-nexus device and things seem a little less straight forward. Aside from flashing the stock 5.1 firmware, what else will I need to do to get the OTA working? Cheers!

I also tried the RETBR 6.0, then downgraded to RETCA 5.1 without any problems, and updated with the 6.0 OTA, no problems. You cannot be rooted, you should flash all the files in the same firmware (you can try skipping the first two files if you want, but I had no problems with flashing them). Your phone has to be completely stock, with no modifications before the 6.0 OTA.

That's what you should flash.
Thanks again! I'll get busy flashing
Update: worked like a charm!

So to clarify, it's safe to flash back from RETBR 6.0 (24.11.18.victara_retbr.en.BR) to RETCA 5.1 and then take the RETCA 6.0 ota?

Yes, I've done it myself on my own phone, XT1097 RETCA from Wind Mobile. Usually when you downgrade, you skip flashing the first two files in the firmware, the Partition Table and BootLoader, but in this case I had no problems flashing them (it seems they haven't changed between 5.1 and 6.0). So go ahead and flash the full 5.1 firmware, every file, and no modifications, no root, etc., until you get and install the update. As of now, I don't know of a full RETCA 6.0 firmware.
