I mean, build quality issues everywhere, and not just with the One. I get it that first batch phones are prone to act up, but somehow HTC always have phones like these and not just in first batches. Why is it like this? Don't they have any sort of quality control at all?
Don't get me wrong, I am a happy HTC One owner with a seemingly faultless phone (just a 1mm gap that I didn't even notice, but my younger brother), but this is scaring me, a lot.
With phones costing as much as they do, and only getting more expensive, you'd expect them to be of a certain quality and not just a five-second put together.

In all fairness, HTC aren't alone when it comes to bad batches. Literally every phone has had its problems, as soon as a phone hits the masses there's always going to be problems. And in all honesty the one has stood up pretty well. Besides the phone getting hot I can't say that I've has any issues myself.

But it seems that HTC have the highest amount of faulty and fault-prone phones. I mean, gaps and things not being fitted correctly. I get that for the first few batches, but now? An acquaintance of mine is on his 5th (fifth) One and the store he bought the original one from (a carrier store but the phone itself is unbranded) has now contacted HTC and he has been promised a Dev edition of the phone and that it will be thoroughly checked before being handed to him.
It shouldn't have to be like that and it's not exactly helping them up from the ground.

I have seen a lot of them coming through where i work, maybe i've been quite lucky with past phones, but yea you do have a point with HTC, I think that's why they beefed up their repair service, i've got a number for them which I sometimes give to clients and the quickest turnaround was one day (normally 3 - 5 days, as opposed to two or more weeks) which is pretty phenomenal when you consider that the likes of samsung and blackberry take two weeks to get you your phone back and you seldom have any input on what happens to your phone, kind of like your friend getting promised a dev edition.
My desire HD had a GPS problem, and this is actually my third One, the first one had a back button problem, the second i found that it got quite hot and the third was just as hot when stressed, seems that it's just the way this phone is.
Saying all that though, I apparently got quite lucky with my samsung, only had the one and it was perfect for the ten months i had it for, but again people coming in to my work place with SDS, overheating, call related problems like drops and silence, 3G drop outs, broken wifi, screen anomalies, the works, and blackberries, omfg, that company has got build quality issues, the middles optic button breaking and the software, my word i don't know where to begin, freelancing the bbm software is probably the best move RIM have done in years.
Overall i think that some people are simply unlucky with their phones, I think that HTC's aren't too bad in comparison to other handsets but they are definitely one of the companies that have issues.

The One does get hot, there's no way you can get around that and it's the metal that's to blame. I think it goes without saying that metal conducts heat and cold a lot better than plastic. Though the S4 has occasional overheating as well.

Oh crikey yea, the S4 can bake, I had a hard choice between the two, I had the One first, got some white solo beats, two screen protectors and a double dip flip case for free.
I spent about a week with it and was about to exchange it for the S4 and return all my bits, but it really grew on me, not to mention the build quality is probably the best i have ever seen on a phone (bar a few bad eggs of course) coupled with the fact that they're both generally the same hardware bar the overclock on the S4 i decided to opt for the One and since then i'm constantly reaffirmed that i did the right thing, I'd missed sense since the EVO 3D and i'm glad i stuck it out, the S4 for me was a bit floaty, if you know what i mean, everything is really bright and in your face, I knew i would have just put apex and a theme on there and had done with touchwiz, I can still do that on the One but i actually like sense this time round.
Plus there are a lot of experimental features like the air gestures which i knew were just extra factors for possible failings, many of which have already been reported (phone calls in pockets, volume going up and down on it's own, screen clicking things without you doing anything, etc)
I've heard about a few things you can do about the heat on the One, apparently theres a cooling feature in some of the kernels but i'm not holding much hope for it's actual real life performance, i guess time will tell.

The S4 can take a hike. I could have accepted that it's plastic, but it has a lot of things I don't like:
Glossy/slippery polycarbonate
Physical home button
Ugly design
Samsung
I have been a samsung fan since the S2, but have to say, the build quality of the ONE, even with the so called gaps, is a lot better than the S3 and S4.
The galaxy s2 was amazing for build quality, no squeeking back cover, and withstood drops onto concrete without breaking. The S3 and S4 and squeeking, badly built, dainty devices that break with only minor 1 foot drops.
I've dropped my HTC One, twice, from over a meter, onto stone tiles, with only scuffs to the corners of the housing. Two friends have broken their SGS3's, one twice, with only 1 foot drops onto the floor.
As for overheating, my One gets what could only be described as warm, not hot. Sgs4 overheats like mad.
I think HTC are getting a rough deal, because they aren't Samsung or Apple. As soon as you tell someone your phone is HTC, they instantly lose interest and wonder off lol.

Agreed. OP, head on over to the Apple forums, search for iPhone 5 threads from October last year and you'll see that there were tons of issues with the iPhone 5 on launch from the cosmetic (the electroplating on the chamfered edges was poor and you get screen sensitivity issues when you use the phone while it's plugged in).
I think we're just more sensitive with HTC issues because they've had a really rough time of it the past 24 months -- whether it's in the financial press or among tech sites and everything gets blown out of proportion.

I know about the issues the iPhone 5 had. Anyways, I think everyone are praising Samsung because Samsung has a lot of money and easily enough money to pay off reviewers. I mean, why else would anyone with a fully functioning brain even remotely like something made out of glossy polycarbonate and have an ugly design at that?
It's to me something extremely hard to understand, but maybe it's because I think logically, who knows.

What rubbish. The S3 or 4 for that matter might feel less strong, but if anything they are stronger and the fit and finish is better. My One (im on my third after rejecting the other 2 for faults) is lumpy on the sides, it has variable gaps all around and seems easily damaged. Its already more marked than my S3 was at the end of its life despite being in a case.
I eventually cracked the back of my S3, I replaced it with a new original part for £8 and sold it on for £300 after a year. I have already seen marked HTC Ones sell for less.
Its a beautiful phone but flawed like no other.

I would accept that the phone is made out of polycarbonate or other types of plastic, but why the hell did they go with the glossy/slippery finish?
The S3 and S4 both feel budget, there's no denying that and one doesn't want to put a case on his or her One solely because it feels so great but I will have to put a case on it because it's more prone to serious injuries than any other phone I've ever had. Plastic seems to withstand damage the most. I think I've dropped my S3 in a lot of various ways. Screen down, screen up, each of the sides and then I remember I dropped it and it literally bounced off on a solid concrete floor and how does it look today? Almost mint. It's got minor scratches on a the back only visible if you look like really close. It's got some color loss in one of the upper corners and that's about it, the screen has no scratches whatsoever.
That's what I liked with the S3. I don't dare drop the One.

Then maybe you needed to word your comment better rather than sound so self righteous. There is no right and wrong in design.
Its cultural, design is very much a cultural thing. Take cars for example, Americans like their cars massive, bloated, over the top, loud, garish. The Chinese like them bland, slab sided with tiny wheels, ill proportioned to my eyes.
Some like the glossy finish, it doesnt take Samsung to pay them off. after all the designers and whoever signed off the design must like it, and it has sold 10 million in a month..

Seriously, though -- the main critique against the GS4 is that it's ugly -- the reviewers are just afraid of not getting any inside information on upcoming Samsung releases which is why they're circumventing the fact that the S4 is a poorly-designed device.

In the first place, those sales figures are meaningless absent context: you have to ask things like: did Samsung subsidize the sales? Was there a discount incentive to order in bulk? How many units were available to ship? Also, you have to take into account the fact that there were production issues with the HTC One.
Besides, HTC have come and said that they've sold 5 of the One. That isn't too bad considering that Samsung can outspend everyone outside of Apple to market their devices -- and that includes giving retailers sales incentives and their more aggressive advertising.
All I can say is this.
I had an s2 for about 2yrs and the main problems I had with it was, the charger port going out. Overheating, it would get almost burning hot in my pocket, and with the jelly bean update the battery die way to fast. Would lose 3-5% just by unplugging.
The s3 didn't add much I wanted so I didn't get one
My friend did and had the s2 before. Said it wasn't much of a change and that the s3 was cheap. He broke the battery back, chip the sides and then finally broke the screen.
Had the phone not about 6months. He said his old s2 was build better and last longer then that and he went back to it once the s3 was done.
To me the HTC one feels nice and I don't have a problem with anything. No overheating, crazy battery, I haven't drop it but I'm willing to beat it won't fall apart like a s3 or s4.
But to each his own. There is people who look iPhones but imo they are cheap parts of crap. Have replaced way to many screens for people that drop them from small Heights.

So anyone who likes the S4 is not thinking logically? There is no logic to taste anyway..
I have said this before in previous threads but the S4 is a quality device. Its made of good quality plastic, and crucially, its made well. The HTC is also made of good quality materials, but its made badly. Whether you like how the material are used is not a build quality issue, its an issue of taste.
I'll try to word my sentences better next time. Sometimes, they sound better in my head and in my native language then come out sounding completely wrong in English. ^^

As the title states, I'm curious as to what you all have to say about it. I recently went with the M8 but I'm not sure if I made the right decision.
There's something about the M8 that just doesn't feel right. I think it's the height. It's kinda awkward to hold.
Anyway, what do you all think? What made you go with the S5? Should I return the M8 and get the S5??
They're both great phones. Stop worrying and enjoy your phone. I choosed S5 coming from S4 and S2 before that. It all depends on your personality, if you care about metal case and / or superb front speakers, you made the right decision. If you want removable battery, water and dust proof, then you better switch.

I had a play with a m8 and I didn't like the length and wasted bezel space. It looks and feels very premium, but a bit slippery in the hand.

Understandable. How's your battery life been? The M8 had better life than my Note 3 so far.
I want the best build quality on a phone and the htc one can't hold a candle to the gs5. So no, no htc for me lol.

Yeah the camera is cool but it isn't very good when I compared it to the GS5 when I was at best buy.
I owned the M8 for 5 days before I got my S5. The M8 looks nice if you're not using it. Then when you start using it you realize how ridiculous the bezels are, how tall it is, how heavy it is, how cumbersome it is to hold, how slippery it is, how fragile it is, etc.
Then when you use it more you realize how mediocre the camera is and how mind numbingly boring Sense is.
So in my opinion, make the switch lol. :thumbup:

Seriously considered M8 and then was forced to "consider" it again for 5 minutes in store. The 4MP camera was a deal braker for me.
I want a phone to replace my aging S2, which takes great pictures but sometimes there is just not enough pixels to give you the details (especially since there's no zoom). A 4MP camera is so 2008.
Also I don't mind the plastic at all. I would even go so far to call it a feature. There are all kinds of dents on my Mac Book Air's alumium body while my old Thinkpad looks as good as new. I am going to put a bumper on my S5 anyways, plastic or not makes no difference to me.
I must also say replaceable battery is a must-have for me. When my S2 was at the end of its 2 year contract, the original battery was only giving me 3 hours of life. The two "genuine" replacments I got from Amazon(!) have both swollen and giving between 5-8 hours of live. I cannot imagine how I would get through these two years without three batteries to rotate.
Also with Samsung TVs and blu-ray players, I am more or less locked into the ecosystem...

Yes, it is true. Polycarbonate is more durable and resilient than aluminum. Fact.
Drop a M8 and S5 straight on their back and let me know which one has more damage. Also, look on Swappa, eBay, Craigslist, etc and look at how almost every M7 being sold has damage. Dings in the aluminium, scratches, etc. Then search for S4's and tell me what you see.
In short, yes, the S5 has better build quality than the M8. If you want to talk about design or aesthetics, then that's a different story. But build quality isn't the same thing which is maybe where you are confused?

I see what you are saying. I guess I don't consider durability = build quality? Idk when I think of build quality I think of how well it feels and how solidly it is constructed.
But yes, if we are thinking of it as which is more durable, then yes definitely the S5 wins there. This is what is making me consider it even more. I constantly feel like I am going to drop my M8 and am nervous that it'll break.

Been pretty good. I can get a days worth of fairly heavy use if the wifi isnt on and im not shooting video.

So are you saying your one can be dropped from a second story onto concrete and still work? How about in the washing machine for an hour? Or in boiling water for like 5 mins. How about driven over by a car? Please... lets be real here.
Well I'm on the M8 switched from the S4. I am thinking of exchanging this for the s5 but I don't think any stores have one in black I hope they get some in stock before the 14 days run out. I do like the m8 it's VERY smooth but the real estate the buttons take away is huge to me. Also the m8 is pretty heavy and the aluminum will get abused pretty easily and I don't like cases. Who else is or was in my situation? I also want the better camera as I sell a lot on eBay.
I glanced at the M8, but never even considered it. I want a removeable battery, the fingerprint scanner. I don't need a metal phone, since mine will always go in a case.
I looked at the M8, played with it quite a bit, but that thing is ridiculously heavy, hate that huge bezel at the bottom, hate aluminium since it's so easy to scratch, no removable battery, no fingerprint scanner, not water/dust proof, horrible camera and Sense is a joke
Grabbed a Galaxy S5 instead. I love the fact that it's made of plastic. By no meas it feels cheep. It's a SOLID phone, very durable and still has a removable battery. Not to mention how light it is. I couldn't be happier. BTW, I had a GS4 before then.
The thing about both these phones, and the biggest argument I see is the camera. Just because the S5 has more megapixels doesn't mean anything. Take a picture in low lighting in example with both M8 and S5, see which does a better job, and which one takes a better picture in broad daylight. Each camera is made for specific strengths. The "bigger number, bigger performance" reason is downright the silliest thing ever imagined. For example, I smoke 5.0 mustangs and even 6.0 gtos with my roughly 1.8 liter RX8, all day any day. I agree, all of this is preference, and mine is, I'd stick with the M8. Touchwiz has too many gimmicks and useless things for me, Sense seems more streamlined, and straight to the point. Numbers don't always mean everything. :beer:

The thing about both these phones, and the biggest argument I see is the camera. Just because the S5 has more megapixels doesn't mean anything. Take a picture in low lighting in example with both M8 and S5, see which does a better job, and which one takes a better picture in broad daylight. Each camera is made for specific strengths. The "bigger number, bigger performance" reason is downright the silliest thing ever imagined. For example, I smoke 5.0 mustangs and even 6.0 gtos with my roughly 1.8 liter RX8, all day any day. I agree, all of this is preference, and mine is, I'd stick with the M8. Touchwiz has too many gimmicks and useless things for me, Sense seems more streamlined, and straight to the point. Numbers don't always mean everything. :beer:

Hi,
I'm looking for a new device, as my Note 1 looks like it's about to join the big charger in the sky.
I know the basics - large screen, good battery & processor, meh resolution etc. Judging form the specs and reviews I've read, it looks like a good fit for me.
What I'd like to know is if you'd recommend buying it for long term use (I'm not one to change phones every year), and if there are issues with the phone you think I should know about.
It's a great phablet. Fast, comfortable and bug free. Battery seems to last forerver. Feels solid yet slippery in the hand, and close to impossible to use one handed. You won't feel the difference made by the 720p resolution after a few hours. Color reproduction is great and the screen is sharp and bright.
Coming from the note 2, i see only 3 downsides In the flex.
1. The camera. Real slow to focus indoors, produces lots of noise in dark areas... Sometimes i cant determine where the focus point is. Perfect daylight and closeups though.
2. Lack of development. This phone is locked down tight, so if you love to flash like me, it's a disappointment.
3. No cases, no glass screen protectors. Almost. You can still find them around ebay and amazon, but not as much stuff a samsung would have.
On the bottom line this is a great mid-high range phone, and for the right price, and the right mind it will do.

I don't really care about the camera. The lack of development is a bummer. Might have been a deal breaker for me if it wasn't for Xposed.
Oh, one more thing - some users had an issue with ghosting or after images on the screen. Anyone had this problem? How widespread is it?

It really is a matter of luck... Some of the phones were bad from factory.. You have something like that, you'll get it replaced with your warrenty.
If you want to keep it long term and lack of updates (and also latest apps) will bug you then I suggest Nexus 6 over it. My dad has this phone and I have the nexus, dont get me wrong g flex is a nice phone but starting to fall back in technology and will likely not get updates for 2+ years

If it's as good as the S7 Edge with SPEN then it'll be perfect for most folks. Should spend time in the TMOB S7 Edge forums to find the quirks.

I've lurked in there for quite a while... I ordered a S7 when it first hit but cancelled it before I ever got it due to locked bootloader....
I told myself regardless of locked bootloader I want the N7 so I'm making the jump...
The thing I like the least is that I can't find a tempered glass screen protector for my s7 edge so I am disappointed that a non edge version isn't being released.

Honestly though I don't think the work very well. My cousin has the s6 edge, and with the tempered glass and a case (uag I believe) on it caused all sorts of touch recognition issues. Could be dependent on case and all that, but still seems like a lot of trouble.

I wasn't really very impressed with what I saw online, but when I went to Best Buy to check it out I was sold. You really have to see it in person to appreciate it. The curved edge display is much less intrusive than previous edge models, I felt like I could hold onto it without worrying about dropping it (since I won't be using a case). It didn't feel laggy at all. The phone feels nice in my hand. I liked the silver a lot, but even just the reflection of the store lights was very distracting. The S-pen worked really well. I know a lot of people don't really use the S-pen but I use it all the time on my Note 4. I like the new S-pen features, the magnify and the translate. I'm glad they brought back the SD card, that's the reason I didn't buy the Note 5. I like the IP68 rating, that's a feature I really liked on my S5.
I don't like the absence of a removable battery, or that the phone is only available with the edge display. I'll never use the iris scanner so I feel like that's wasted space and resources. Would be nice if they kept the IR blaster, but honestly I've never used it on my Note 4. Black is pretty plain looking from the back, looks like cheap plastic to me, so we've got the fragile nature of "premium materials" with the look of cheap plastic.

I'm on a Note 4. The Note 7 and S7 are pretty durn similar, you won't be gaining much besides a little screen real estate, water resistance, and the S-pen.

I have a s7 edge and I'm seriously considering it. Biggest reason is, and it may sound stupid, is because for 1 I want a different color than my silver. And for the bigger reason I think it has a wider side rail which should be easier to hold and reduce the accidental touches. And lastly because I can .

I pulled the trigger today and pre-ordered the Coral Blue.
What I like is that Note 7 finallly featurs water resistant and curved screen, which makes the phone more pratical and beautiful. What I dislike is that it doesn't have a bigger battery than S7 as Note 7 get bigger screen. What I care is the Note 7 whether supports Quick Charge 3.0?
My OP5 has replaced my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge which unfortunately was dropped and shattered the front glass. It's expensive/difficult to replace the glass on these so I treated myself to a new phone. So this is what I Love and Hate about my new OnePlus 5!
Love
The Snapdraggon 835 -The phone is Fast and bang up to date in connectivity support.
Fast storage and lots of memory- More Speed
No bloatware and streamlined Android -Contributes to the speed and simplicity.
The silent/DnD slider button -No more taking my phone out and turning the display on to switch it to silent! Fantastic.
Fast responsive finger print unlocking.
Solid Home button -Sooner or later the push down home buttons on galaxies start to wear causing rocking, noises/rattles, missed clicks etc because of their frequent use. Hopefully nothing to wear out here.
The deep blacks and saturation from the AMOLED panel
3.5mm jack -Can still use my headphones without an adapter.
Battery -Amazing battery life and the DASH charge is great too.
USB C -So easy to plug in the charger in the dark now.
Gorilla Glass 5 -better drop resistance, the gorilla glass 4 on my Galaxy S7 drop failed
Glass on one side. Feels less premium in a way, but reduces the weight of the phone. This means less force when it falls and less chance of shattering the screen. However metal dents and scratches easily.
Hate
The Camera. So much hype and so much disappointment. Good on paper and for taking 'benchmark' photos. But very poor in real world phone usage. The S7 camera is WAY better. I'm so disappointed I gave it it's own thread.
Only 1080P screen. Also if the brightness is turned up I can see 'noise' on the display. Also get some weird distortions when scrolling. Viewing angle is good, but not excellent. Automatic brightness control is also hit and miss. The S7 was much better. A big downgrade on the S7 display in all areas.
Design is good. But it doesn't look as nice as say a galaxy S8
Having DRM issues, such as reduced quality Netlix streaming. I hope this gets sorted soon.
Sound is loud, but quality is average.
Not waterproof
No SD Card support. Who really wants two sim card holders? Make the other slot for an sdcard like Samsung.
Price. £450 is not a value bargain like the old versions. You can buy a Samsung S8 on Amazon for £550 now.
In a nutshell. It's a mid range phone in regards to features and design, but with high end performance. I don't think it's a bargain. I think the price is about right for what you get.
Sometimes I ask myself why do people actually upgrade from S7 or equal??
The S7/S7 edge is only one year old. I think it's also nonsense to upgrade from S7 to S8 for example.
What do people expect to get? A whole new smartphone experience? Ppl knew the specs right from the start, before they bought it. Of course a 1080p screen will be worse than a QHD.
It's not waterproof, you knew that. It has no SD-Slot, you knew that as well.
For the smoothness and the speed to exist, as well as the great batterylife, there need to be some things that can't be amazing as well for this price. And it's not even bad on this phone.
I understand disappointment, but it's mostly because people expect too much from a phone that is only 1 year younger than the one they own.
I'm coming from a Nexus 5 and I'm totally happy with the OP5. My gf has a S7 edge. They are both good phones. The Samsung might have a better camera, but the Android experience and smoothness is GALAXIES better with the OP5.
Sometimes ist also about people's priotities.

Because I said . honesty though, I just hate complaints on lack of features when it was a known fact prior to purchase. So I'm going to stick to my opinion on the subject.

It is possible that he thought he could look past it, but ended up failing at it. idk. All I can say is that it has happened to me. Mostly with iPhone, but that is a whole other beast.
