Project Fi - Purchase Nexus 6 from Google or AT&T? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
A week or so ago, I signed up for Project Fi and I plan to switch over to it as soon as I receive notification (which could be months away I'm guessing). In the mean time I have some questions:
- I am currently on AT&T using an unlocked, rooted Note 3 which has been paid off. I thought since Project Fi uses the Nexus 6, I may as well go ahead and purchase a Nexus 6 while I wait for my invitation. I have a couple of choices:
- On the Project Fi web site, it looks like the phone purchase is $500, however, on AT&T, if I sign up for the installment plan of 2 years, based upon my monthly service and data rate, the phone works out to $480. I can either use the AT&T Nexus 6 until I'm approved, OR I can use the Google Nexus 6.
My question is, is there any difference between the Nexus 6 from AT&T and the one offered by Google? Are there any frequency bands not supported on the AT&T version? Can the AT&T version be 'rooted'? I have read on the Google site about their phone having a SIM card to support multiple networks. I have also read that the Google version will use a combination of Sprint, T-Mobile, and WiFi and I'm not sure if the AT&T version would do all of the this even with the special SIM card?
Thanks in advance!

They are all the same and unlockable, SIM card will be the only difference and activate whichever bands needed.... I think they send a new SIM for FI.

Thanks for this... What about 'bloatware'? Do you know if one model has less than the other?

The AT&T variant is the only Nexus to be SIM locked. If you do next, you will need to pay the phone off before you can obtain the unlock code. If you don't want to do that, and have the money, get it from Google. Less hassle in the long run.
Source: Made the mistake of buying my Nexus from AT&T, currently getting the runaround getting the SIM unlocked.

@gil_happy, @an21281, @Blackiedamus,
I have a AT&T N6 and am currently on Fi. And AT&T did supply the carrier unlock code.
But, here's the deal. If you purchase an AT&T version (even from a 3rd party), and even if it's paid off, the device has to be activated for 30 days on the account before they will supply the unlock code.
And it the device is not paid off (i.e. under contract), AT&T will not supply the carrier unlock code.

I've had my nexus since new years day. I've bought out my contract but am still having issues getting it unlocked.

When you talk to AT&T tech support, have they explained why?

They told me that because my line was bought under concession for employees, they're having issues finding my IMEI to provide the unlock code.

Wow. Never heard that one before. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for all of this information... So the ROM on ATT N6 and the ROM on the Google version of N6 will be the same? Either way, it seems like the safest and best bet is to go through Google to purchase the N6 even if it is slightly more expensive (because there is no subsidized service).

No. The AT&T version will probably have LMY47Z (or possibly LMY47I). The ROM on the N6 that you purchase with Fi from Google will have LVY48E. Doesn't matter, though. Because you can fastboot flash whichever ROM you want, on either device.
The key point for you should be this: if you buy it subsidized from AT&T, you will not be able to get a carrier unlock code from them. Device has to be paid off first. And hence, you will not be able to use the Project Fi SIM card....

Decided to pay for an unlock code. Found on for $13 online and put it in and now I'm unlocked. Not gonna port my number til I know that fi works for me in my area. ATT and Verizon are the best with T-Mobile and sprint having issues where I am. But I haven't had either in my area in years so gonna be hopeful. You can always get it subsidized and buy an unlock code. ATT will be none the wiser unless you port your number. Good luck.

If possible avoid carrier locked phone. I bought mine from google and running two lines (ATT and fi) for time being. Just testing out the fi service before I transfer my primary number.

(Q) Buying a Nexus 6 at T-mobile to use at Verizon

Since the Nexus 6 US version is the same across all carriers, couldn't someone from Verizon buy a phone at T-mobile off contract and use it on verizon with a pre-existing Verizon sim?

No. Well you could but version probably won't authorize devices if the imei is not in their database.

Why not? All signs point to T-Mobile selling the Nexus 6 without any kind of SIM lock, so you should be able to pop in a Verizon SIM in the Nexus 6 you get from T-Mobile and it will probably work.
Probly not. But wait and see.

People are saying that the T-mobile version IMEI's won't be on VZW's whitelist, but unlocked versions are.
However, no one really knows, it's an assumption based on past knowledge.

We had this debate in another thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/cdma-carriers-buying-nexus-6-consider-t2922642
The consensus seems to be that Verizon only uses IMEI whitelists for device activation, and maybe for non-LTE devices. For LTE devices, it seems all the information that is needed to authenticate to both the CDMA and the LTE network are stored on the SIM card. So if you already have an activated SIM from Verizon, it should work on any SIM-unlocked Nexus 6.

ExCtly. People are getting confused because of the pamphlets that have to logos but they are google play review units. They were probably google units going to Tmobile that had those pamphlets and were used as review units. That DOESNT mean they came from Tmobile which is a different thing. Plus you also have to consider that the persons Verizon Sim car is already provisioned. The real test is activating new new service with a new sim card.

Yes, you guys have some valid points. I already have an activated sim and all I would need to do is pop mine in to a T-mobile phone to see if it works.
But speaking to the last post, it would be interesting to see if a new verizon sim would work with a t-mobile bought phone.
There are only 2 versions. ..... international and north American. .....not a t mobile sprint vzw etc they are the same
If that's the case, then everyone should flock T-mobile stores on Nov. 12th if they are buying off contract.

Well first. Good luck trying to get a Tmobile store to sell you the phone without having an account. I've heard that some might for a higher msrp price. Even then if Verizon doesn't have the imei in their database you can't get it activated there. Some have said if you pop in an existing nano Sim with existing service it will work but trying to activate new service with it on Verizon may be tricky, specially since Verizon hasn't said squat about release dates or if they will even have the device in stock.

This exactly.
Fact is if you want to use a Nexus 6 on VZW your best bet is to buy from Play Store, Amazon, Motorola Direct, Verizon upon release, etc but NOT from other carriers.
Also T-Mobile has confirmed that they will turn away anyone hoping to buy off contract at any of their stores on launch day. They want to give current customers and new service customers the first go at the device sale before expanding sales to a whole after the hype dies down on their customer end.
I was lucky enough to get an order in today on Motorola's site, but after watching the latest Droid-Life show I was left with a concern. Apparently we won't be able to use simultaneous voice and data. So say for example I'm on a call and want to look something up, unless I'm connected to a WiFi network I won't be able to do that. This is the case with the 2014 Moto X and the just released Droid Turbo. Those phones though are (according to Verizon) going to get an update before the years end to allow for VoLTE, which will fix this problem. The problem I see is that since this isn't a "Verizon" phone per say, how are we going to get that update? Are we going to be stuck not being able to use simultaneous voice and data? For once I thought we finally had a great Nexus phone on Verizon and now this news reminds me of why we haven't had a Nexus phone after the Galaxy Nexus.
I have been mainly using it with T-Mobile but have popped in a Verizon sim and got LTE service. Made a couple of calls, used the internet.

[Q] Help with nexus 6 (several questions) (tmobile to Verizon)

After attempting to buy from 3 retail tmobile stores (who wouldn't sell me the phone without a plan) I ordered my nexus 6 via the phone. Several retail workers and customer support agents on the phone have told me I need to keep service on my phone for 45days to get the unlock code from them. Currently awaiting delivery (back ordered )
What happens if I don't wait for the unlock code And I just insert my Verizon sim?
The tmobile nexus 6 is suppousedly the same as the Unlocked GP nexus 6, so what exactly is unlocked?
I'm coming from a note 4 (my note 4 lags a lot more than everyone else and I can't take it anymore, couldn't figure out the cause)
will the nexus 6 have multi windows at all?
Also how do you use the notifications on this (I played with a 2013 moto x, is it the same?)
Sorry for all the question and thanks in advance for any help.
I just bought the phone from T-Mobile with their cheapest plan Wednesday and I'm canceling them today. From what I've been Reading I shouldn't have to pay anything for the plan. I haven't used it at all and just popped my Verizon Sim card right away.

Thank you, you pretty much saved me 45 days of phone bill payment.
Im assuming if i dont activate the tmobile sim, i can cancel/not have any charges.
I prev had the z1s with them for like a month and canceled due to their poor customer service , surprised they let me sign up again. (Then again theyre the ones who wanted me to sign up, i just wanted to buy the phone outright and use it on my unlimted data verizon line)
T-Mo Nexus 6 on VZW
OK, so I see that the T-Mo Nexus 6 works fine on VZW, however I see that all of you said you bought it outright, how about buying subsidized? Will it work if on VZW then, since the phone is getting activated, will it lock it to work only on T-Mo? Thanks for the help in advanced!

As stated above T-Mobile doesn't sim lock phones.... They also don't subsidize phones because they are the "uncarrier" so it will work if you pop the Verizon sim in assuming you have a bank sim ready to go.
As what others have said, T-Mobile doesn't lock the phones.
AT&T and Sprint are on a different story, AT&T I've heard locked their phones via carrier.
Sprint doesn't lock their phones but some people have reported buying them from Amazon have carrier locked so be careful on that.
T-Mobile will however make you stay with them for one month (I believe) before you can cancel. If you cancel, your EIP balance is due. If you pay outright, you'll still have to stick with them for a month. At least thats my understanding of it.
U.S. Cellular also sells the phone now but I'm not sure about their policy.

Theres availability, you just need to stick around for them. Have a auto refresh script that alerts you when its available. They randomly add them in stock.

If youre looking for a 32g id recomend buying off motorola.

Google play VS. Carrier branded

So I have never purchased a Google play version of a phone before so I am wondering something.
I always root and install ROMs on my phones and I have only had non-nexus devices and know that installing a sprint ROM on a Verizon phone makes it not work correctly... So if I buy a Google play version can I install Verizon ROMs since I'm on the Verizon network?
Both are the same. Roms work on all networks.

No difference. All Google nexus 6 factory images can be flashed on any nexus 6. They are all identical.
Only thing with Verizon is that they will not add any other nexus 6 to their system. It will work, but you will see that you are using a non vzw device when you log into your account

I bought mine from Motorola so that I could get the Motocare policy. The issues with buying a non-Verizon branded N6 are the following:
1) Verizon reps won't be able to activate a Verizon nano SIM in the device - so you would need to use an already activated SIM card to get the device active on your line - this can be done by activating a nano SIM in a Verizon branded phone that uses a nano SIM or by cutting down an existing micro SIM card;
2) If you deal with Verizon instead of Google or Motorola for warranty issues, you are going to get a Verizon branded 32GB Midnight Blue N6 as a replacement regardless of whether or not you have the light grey or the 64GB N6 - so IMO, dealing with Verizon is not an option;
3) Asurion insurance likely won't replace your device with a non-Verizon branded N6 should you need to use insurance coverage so again, you would be getting a 32GB Midnight Blue Verizon N6 as a replacement regardless of what device you actually have on the line if you pay for Asurion insurance;
4) Asurion insurance may not cover your device at all since your line will just show Non-Verizon Device on it - hence another the reason I bought from Motorola directly and bought the MotoCare policy;
5) To get HD Voice/Advance Calling/VoLTE active on your line, you would need to first put a Verizon branded device that is VoLTE eligible on your line to add it as a feature or search the forum for other ideas on how to do it; and
6) People with More Everything plans and the month-to-month or Edge discount on their lines are having trouble getting the discount to stick even after the reps add it to their lines.
I had a Moto X on my line, which uses a nano SIM card so I had no issues with #1. I bought the MotoCare policy so I have eliminated issues #2-#4 for myself. I used an iP6 to get VoLTE added to my line and have a legacy nationwide plan so issues #5 and #6 aren't problems for me.
I haven't yet flashed to 5.1 so I can't test the VoLTE yet but others say it works and I will do that soon and report back my results.

There's no "carrier" version, there's a nexus 6 made by motorola, endorsed by Google, that's it, your particular carrier may sell said device on their network, but it's not their device or their variant, there are two variants, a US model and an international model and even then, there's literally only a band availability difference. All nexi are the same phone not matter who's providing the service for it

Project Fi compatible with all US carrier issued N6 phones (if unlocked)?

Sorry if this has already been talked about, I couldn't find it.
I think I managed to get one of the-less-than stellar Fi reps on a chat and didn't get an answer I was confident with.
My invite is looking to be ready in 4 weeks. I haven't purchased an N6 yet - I'd much prefer to get one used on eBay. My question is whether one from T-Mo, AT&T, VZW, Sprint will work with Fi assuming it's unlocked - or does it need to be one originally purchased as unlocked and not tied to a carrier at any point?
Is there a preferred go-to device assuming that's true? I read that the AT&T version comes with bloatware.
Bonus question (another I've had trouble getting a clear answer for): Since Sprint uses CDMA last I checked - will international texting work when it latches onto their network? VZW and Sprint have always tooted international texting capabilities but I have not once had CDMA->GSM work when sending or receiving messages from stateside to Europe. Any chance it carries on using GSM?
Thanks much.

1st, all Nexus 6 are SIM unlocked, EXCEPT the AT&T version. The AT&T version can be unlocked via a code once the device is paid off, and 60 days have lapsed since it was first registered for service on AT&T.
Any version of the Nexus 6 will work on Fi (including the AT&T version if it has been SIM unlocked).
2nd, the AT&T version and the Verizon version have a few of their carrier apps. These are easily removed. And flashing a new factory image via fastboot does away with them too. So I wouldn't worry about this.
And remember to not confuse bootloader unlocked with carrier unlocked, FWIW.
Thanks @cam30era. I've always just relied on eBay sellers for unlock codes. Never had an issue with it. Is the Nexus any different in that regard? Does your mention of AT&T being the only sim-locked one mean that VZW, etc. sells/sold the N6 as a full priced unlocked N6 just like any other? Thanks.

Nexus 6 is no different than any other device regarding carrier unlocking. All others (VZW etc.) are carrier unlocked out of the box.
Sprint issue
So I own a nexus 6 through Sprint and I still owe money on it (installment billing, not contract) my question is I have a project fi sim card and I want to port my number over (I know I'll owe the remaining balance) but can I do this while I pay my balance off of does it need to be paid off first. I ask for two reasons, one is because its supposed to be carrier unlocked out of box, and two, because I had one project fi card activated already and it worked just fine. Just wanted to make sure

Installment billing is a contract. If you port your number before you finish paying it, Sprint will hit you with the remaining balance - I don't know whether or not they throw in a penalty fee on top of that. You would need to have them unlock it once your account is squared away (or just pay $5 for a code on eBay).
From Sprint website:
What happens if a customer on an Installment Agreement cancels service prior to completing their 24 device payments?
If a customer on an Installment Agreement cancels service prior to completing their 24 device payments, the full remaining unpaid balance on the device will be due on customer's next invoice.

Good luck on the Ebay code. Another user tried to bypass ATT and there was no code available for the N6.

So I'll have to pay it off, or get that eBay code thing? Even though I've activated a fi sim card in it before but with a different number?

From my understanding a Fi sim card would have been able to activate and work on it, by connecting to Sprint's network only. You can't get out of paying off the rest of the phone and keep it, since that would be stealing and phone companes generally frown upon that kind of thing.

I have every intention of paying it off, bug as for being only to connect to Sprint only. I had it connect to lte and get lte speeds where I live, and where I live Sprint only has 3g while T-Mobile has lte...this is where I get confused as to it not working even though it's already carrier unlocked out of box

Sprint N6 are not carrier locked. You do not not need an unlock code to move your device to Fi. With that said, you are still legally and ethically bound by the termination requirements of your contract.
FWIW: the only US carrier N6 that is carrier locked is AT&T.

[Q] Differences between Non-Branded Nexus 6 and Verizon Nexus 6

I've been doing research for the past couple of days and I have seen that when the Nexus 6 came out that there were basically just 2 different models out. The International and the North American models. I'm coming from a Galaxy S4 from Verizon and I honestly can say that I just find TouchWiz ugly. I have rooted it but it was too late, the damage Verizon has done already left a huge enough impact that I am too afraid to put a rom on it in fear of the consequences. It was my first smartphone and I was happy with it when I first got it and now I am not to fond of it any longer. With the way Verizon's new plans are, I'm hoping of buying the Nexus 6 from them and slowly paying it off.
I apologize for long intro so i'll get to the point. I am curious about the differences of the Nexus 6 straight from Google and the Nexus 6 straight from the Verizon store if I buy it from them. I would prefer to buy straight from Verizon since I'm a college student and money is very tight and the slow payments seem to work out better in the long run even though I will be paying more if I buy it straight from Verizon. , but if getting the "clean" Nexus 6 is worth the better investment then i'll save up more money and pay for it all right then and there.
I've also read that there have been issues in the past where people have bought a Nexus 6 elsewhere and when they came to Verizon to activate it, that Verizon turned them away and that it wasn't possible. Is this still happening ?
Lastly, if any of you have a Nexus 6 straight from Verizon:
- How has it held up to this point ?
- What are the different things Verizon has done to the phone that weren't there in the past ?
and any other advice you can give to me to make a good purchase decision.
I just want a smartphone that I can root, put roms on, experiment with on XDA, has near-vanilla android but also works with Verizon.
I apologize for such a long post and this is my first ever thread on XDA and i'm new so I hope you may bear with me. I just want to make sure I am giving enough information to where some of you guys can help get my questions answered so I won't resent purchasing a Nexus 6 straight from Verizon if I do.
Thank you very much for reading and helping if you choose to.
P.S. I'm unsure whether to post this in the General Forum for the Nexus 6 or the Help and Troubleshooting forum of the Nexus 6 . I apologize if I posted this in the wrong forum.

I have a N6 I bought in March from Verizon and I love it. Other than the small Verizon branding on the back, and two Verizon apps pre-installed (My Verizon Mobile and Verizon Visual Voicemail), I don't believe there is anything different between it and a Google bought Nexus.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
The preinstalled apps can likely be uninstalled as they were probably pulled in automatically based on your SIM card. From what I've read, the shipping firmware is the same as the Play Store/Motorola model.

That's great to hear honestly. If there is no difference other than two Verizon apps then this is officially my first choice for when I get a new device with Verizon. I'm hoping I am smart enough to root it, flash Pure Nexus and make it my own.
Thank you for the response.

That's also great to hear. Definitely going to get the Nexus 6 soon then once I can get a new phone. Getting really tired of my Galaxy S4.
I just bought a new 32gb unlocked blue nexus 6 at best buy today for $350 + tax
It was the best deal I could find. I traded in some games and got the total down to $317. The phone is amazing, I came from a verizon S5 and it was well worth the purchase not to see that TouchWiz **** all over my phone
Thanks for starting this discussion. I have a GS5, and I'm fed up with the Verizon crap but it's the best network around where I live.
My question, can you root the N6 purchased from Verizon?

Yep. 100% bootloader unlockable. I use wugs toolkit to unlock and flash custom recovery. Plus it's relockable if you need service.

What do you mean re-lockable if I need service?
Does anyone know if I can buy the Nexus 6 (unlocked) from Best Buy with the special they are having right now and use it on Verizon ? I was going to wait for 2 months to get an early upgrade by turning my phone in and getting the Nexus 6 but if I can buy it for 350 right now then I definitely want to jump on it. I am just curious if I can buy it from Best Buy and use it on Verizon without any issues. If I do buy it then what do I need to do in order to make it work with Verizon ?
I really want a phone I can root easily, flash roms and experiment with. The Nexus 6 seems like the perfect device and with it at $350 right now, its a steal !
Does anyone know if this is just a special and for how long ? Or is it indefinitely?

Service meaning repairs in case you have to send the phone in for some reason. It will work fine on Verizon. You can either activate it through Verizon and get a new SIM card or just switch an existing (already activated) nano SIM from an existing Verizon device into your new Nexus 6. Either method works fine.

Oh ! Okay, I see. Thank you.
On the best buy website it says its doesnt support CDMA but thanks for telling me otherwise. It gives me hope that I can get a decent phone for cheap and love it.

$350-399 the going rate now. They on clearance for the new ones probably in November. Best Buy will match Internet price. So as long as Amazon and others have that price can just tell them and they will look it up on their PC. If you have a Verizon nano sim can just pop it in. They have the IEMIs now so they can activate for you. Shouldn't have a problem. I cut down my micro sim to fit before they would activate them.

Forgot to address your first question. There are 2 unlocks. Carrier and bootloader. Previous poster was referring to bootloader unlock. They are all carrier unlocked except for ATT. ATT requires to pay for the device in full and be active on their service for 30 days before can use another sim. Bootloader unlock is for modding. We unlock the bootloader and if need to send for warranty we put back to stock and locked.

This answers similar question I've had since I have Verizon as my carrier. I found some good deals on swappa, and wondered if I got one from there, if I'd be able use it on Verizon.

You can use any on any carrier unless it is the ATT carrier locked. Also has to be NA version. Not International. I got Google version on Verizon. Everything works including tether on my Unlimited Data Plan.

North American. US and Canada. I looked on Swappa. They need to adjust their prices as the Market price decreases. They too high if can get new in box with full warranty for $350.

Wait, so the International one's won't work with Verizon? The one Best Buy is selling on clearance is the GSM International model. So even though its an amazing deal, It won't work with Verizon because its the International model ?

The US model is XT1103, which is what Best Buy should stock, and it will work on any US carrier. The XT1100 is the International model and would only work on AT&T/T-Mobile in the US (or any carrier that uses their network) as it doesn't have all the necessary bands for other carriers. Most places don't even carry the International model for sale in the US.

Okay, that helped clear up some questions I was having. Thank you. I guess its time to go buy that sweet Nexus 6 once I get my check. Ugh, i can't wait.
If you had to recommend a phone for a beginner who wants to root, put roms on his device and experiment with it, what would you recommend to them ?
