I know it can be done, as long as you don't OTA after. If I were to downgrade to 4.4.4 or 5.0.2 with 5.1 bootloader, would that offer a software method to root and unlock or no?
Edit: Welp, I answered my own question... I can't even flash anything because of sig checks.

The bootloader can not be downgraded. That would cause a brick. I'm looking for a way to downgrade the system/boot images to 4.4.4 so I could root to get an unlock on the bootloader via sunshine.

You can at least try using Kingroot to root the device for now, and wait till Sunshine is compatible with Lollipop.
With "mofo" you can flash firmwares to the phone on a locked bootloader, I wonder if there is a way to flash just system.img using mofo. Maybe ask that at their thread.

Mofo does not work with 5.1 bootloader and kingroot does not work with 5.1. Sunshine is updated to unlock so long as you have root but I cannot find root method for 5.1.
Edit: Okay, so I'm seeing that some people HAVE downgraded their system image but eventually had a brick from OTA flashing BL. How do you downgrade the system image? If I can get to 4.4.4, I can root and unlock and go back to 5.1.

Hey guys, so I was on 4.4 and downgraded and managed to get my 4.2.2 rom rooted.
Now I want to upgrade to 4.4, but when I attempt to go into recovery, it just restarts into android.
I attempted to flash a recovery, but it continually failed. Maybe I am doing something wrong when attempting to flash the recovery..
Attached is what I have so far.
I take it that you didn't use the directions in the SlapMyMoto to achieve root

Well originally I used 64 scrip to downgrade to 4.2.2 then used moto x tool kit.
I am currently unrooted on 4.2.2 right now. What is the best way to go about continuing?
when I tried using pwnmymoto it doesn't install..

I am pretty sure I am bootloader locked.
I am now on 4.4 rooted but when I attempted to flash a recovery I'd get a preflash failure.

well that would be why you cant flash TWRP recovery. you can not flash TWRP or Clockwork on a device with a locked bootloader.
the only recovery you can use on a locked bootloader is Safestrap
which can be located here
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/104161-recovery-locked-safestrap-recovery-v365-2013-11-13/
good luck
but i would recommend re-flashing to stock and re-rooting your device so you don't have and issues because you tried to flash a unlocked bootloader recovery on a locked bootloader device
And if you had read, you'd know that selecting "recovery" in the bootloader actually boots Android with write protection off.
Also, this is why I don't like toolkits. Too many people jumping in head first without an inkling of understanding of what's going on with their phone.
I'm running 4.4 on first gen moto x. I am rooted with jcase method (back when it was script only..lol) I have a loss of battery life. I use to be able to run all day and come home with 40ish %.. I've ran a tad over 9 hours today and I'm at 18%. I have had touch screen issues off "center" for example.. If I'm googleing something and I click on first one pops up I may click on the 2nd or 3rd.. I'd I'm on Facebook and I click "like" it at click on the link.. I am thinking of fxzing my phone back to stock and erase it all. But my concern is 1. If it pulls update before I can stop it, is there a root out for it yet? 2nd, I have not had to root my 4.4 is there an easier way now?
Thanks for the help!!
Slapped my Moto
If you're on 4.4, why not use Sunshine to unlock your bootloader? That way, you don't have to worry about your first or second question.
To answer your questions:
1. It won't and even so, you have to choose to install the update.
2. TowelPieRoot.
I highly suggest you pony up the $25 to unlock your bootloader though.
I'm on Verizon..last I knew it was unlockable..
Edit: OK...nvm done a bit of research...this is awesome.. Only issue I'm having is I try to download sunshine and it basically says its corrupt.
Slapped my Moto
OK another ?. I did the su shine unlock and tried to install CM11 and bootlooped so I had to reinstall stock...trying to do root I remember I need reflash 4.2.2 and use slapmymoto etc to regain root then take 4.4 update... But I don't think its out what if I take 4.4.4 will I still have root?!
I've also seen u can use towlpieroot but once u reboot, u lose it...is there a perm solution?

If you unlocked your bootloader you just flash twrp and it roots for you. Hopefully you didn't brick by flashing a lower firmware.
You can just use the Verizon fxz in the general section to update to 4.4.4 and then root with twrp. You are unlocked, no exploits or towel pie or slapping. Just root forever

If sunshine properly unlocked your bootloader, you shouldn't have any issues rooting, no matter what ROM you have on your phone.
Once you unlock your bootloader, you do not need to use SlapMyMoto/RockMyMoto or the like, nor do you need MotoWpNoMo.
If you get 4.4.2 or higher on your phone do NOT downgrade!!!
PIE and TowelPieRoot only work on 4.4.2, it does not work on 4.4.4. And it is only a temp root, as with a locked bootloader on 4.4.2 and up, you can't disable write protection.
IF you've used Sunshine to unlock your bootloader then, To ROOT Once you unlocked your bootloader, Download the latest TWRP Recovery from -> http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/234 (under the Download-Fastboot heading) and the latest SuperSU from -> http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu or the latest CWM / TWRP / MobileODIN installable ZIP from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053 and use them while following the instructions in this post -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/step-step-instructions-unlocking-t2649738

You used MotoWPNoMo to disable write protection. If you upgrade to 4.4.2, you'll likely keep root which was provided by SlapMyMoto, but the vulnerability being exploited by MotoWpNoMo was patched, so write protection will be re-enabled.
On 4.4.2 and up, the only way to disable write protection is unlocking the bootloader.
The Vulnerabilities used to gain root via SlapMyMoto on 4.4, and Pie, TowelPieRoot on 4.4.2 are patched in 4.4.4, and there is no root on 4.4.4 unless you unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery to root.
That being said. If you have NEVER upgraded to 4.4.4, you could try Sunshine to unlock your bootloader. Its $25, but it checks if your phone is compatible before it charges you. This thread discusses it -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/request-help-exploit-moto-x-bl-t2828471
And in case you missed the many posts/threads... Once on 4.4.2 or up, DO NOT DOWNGRADE or attempt to downgrade!!!! You will end up with a Brick!! (So this means if you have 4.4.4, you can't downgrade to 4.4.2 or 4.4 to try and use the older exploits/processes.)
that's actually what i did.. lol, thanks though.
I have the 2013 model of the MotoX and its XT1058 version. I am currently on KitKat 4.4.2 and it's rooted. I was wondering if I will lose root if I take the OTA update to 4.4.4 and if that is so, is there a way to keep the root on 4.4.4. Thanks!

If your bootloader is unlocked, yes, you can keep root, though you will need to the reflash supersu.zip (or have twrp automagically do it). Otherwise, no. There is no root available for unlocked 4.4.4. If you don't have an unlocked bootloader, check out the Sunshine thread in the general section.
Is your X an ATT XT1058? If not, you should be able to unlock for free through Moto (there are a number of threads around on doing so). For you @EpicBlob, since you are using a Verizon XT1060, if it isn't the Dev Edition, Sunshine is your only option now and is $25 to use.
Kind of, if root is hidden via superSU you can take the ota & then use sunshine. But why risk it.
As I recall, you can keep root but you will loose write access to system. This means if you use root to modify anything, it wont stick after a reboot. I would advise against it unless you have an unlocked bootloader.
If you have a custom recovery, you need to flash your stock recovery first also. ?

You didn't mention you had an unlocked bootloader.
If it were me, I would RSD back to stock 4.4, take the OTA's to 4.4.4, flash recovery, flash root. (Only if you have an unlocked bootloader of course. )
I would just find the 4.4.4 AT&T sbf/fxz and flash it manually instead of taking OTAs.

Sorry I'm joining late... But...
If your bootloader is LOCKED (Standard on the ATT XT1058, and Verizon XT1060), then do not upgrade to 4.4.4. You will lose Root. The vulnerabilities exploited by Pie and Towel have been patched in 4.4.4, and you will not be able to re-root.
However, If while on 4.4.2 or lower you have unlocked your bootloader by either using Sunshine, or purchasing an Unlock Code from the China Middle man when available (the only two options to unlock the bootloader on the ATT XT1058 and Verizon XT1060 non-developer edition), you will likely lose root taking the update, but can re-root after 4.4.4 is on your phone.
To take OTA, you need stock recovery on your phone, and to be as close to stock as possible (so the OTA's preflash validation check doesn't fail). After the OTA is installed, flash TWRP, reboot-bootloader and enter TWRP.
The other option is to download the 4.4.4 SBF from one of the sites listed in -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/info-tip-web-sites-official-leaked-roms-t2923347 and flash your phone with it via RSDLite or mFastboot. After flashing, use mFastboot to flash TWRP recovery, reboot-bootloader, then enter TWRP.
I have unlocked bootloader, flashed Custom Recovery TWRP to my Moto G2 XT1068 and rooted on 4.4.4 stock, while waiting for the official lollipop updates.
So does this break the OTA, and if so how to enable it again?!
Yes you don't get official Lollipop OTA if you unlock your bootloader. For getting official OTA you have to unroot ur phone and relock the bootloader

No. You will receive ota but you can't install it. For root to work, /system has to be modified. The OTA-package will recognize this and refuses to install.

Maybe the rom currently installed and the rom you try to flash and lock are not the same. Or, at one point you installed a rom that had a version above your current one. There are some partitions that can't be downgraded, like gpt and motoboot (which is the bootloader). Subsequently the lock will fail. Anyway, locking the bootloader is absolutely not necessary. There is no benefit in doing so.

As far I know you can't downgrade if your BL is locked because once your BL is on the new version you can't downgrade it and in order to downgrade you need to flash only system via TWRP or Fastboot, both of them only available with unlocked BL. Sorry about that.
I rooted my verizon version using "mofo", it cost $20 though. It allows to flash a rooted stock firmware to the phone. I would recommend to flash the same firmware version as what you're currently running. If you flash an older firmware and also take the OTA updates afterward it may permanently brick the device.
To unlocked the bootloader, I use Sunshine which cost another $25 and needs root.
There are probably some other free ways to root, but these are were quick so I didn't mind paying. There is something called Kingroot, maybe it's enough to run Sunshine, but I don't know.

They can't be flashed if you have 5.1, it won't let you because the bootloader is locked.
