Overheating Issue? Something Else? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anybody know what would cause the note 4 to randomly reboot itself? I odined back to stock lollipop after being on the infamous rom and still didn't fix the issue. Could the motherboard be overheating to make it reboot? It doesn't get too hot that you can't touch it just a noticeable heat. No issues before just one day it started to randomly reboot every 4 minutes or so.

Did you factory reset after your went back to odin? I recommend wiping everything but your external sdcard if you have one in your phone.

Yea I did that and still didn't fix it. I even did the recovery through kies, rooted the phone, put twrp back on and installed pop rocks latest rom. Still reboots and to add to that there is no sound as well.

[Q] Random shutdowns with Cognition 2.2b5.5, 6, 7

Experiencing random shutdowns ever since moving to Congnition. This morning, just to clean everything out, I did an Odin Master Clear and used Odin to flash Cognition 2.2b6. About an hour later, I had my first random shutdown.
This doesn't appear to be totally random. It only occurs when the phone is in screenlock mode, such as when it's in my pocket or sitting unused on my desk. I will go grab the phone to turn on the screen, and realize that it is shut off. So, I have to long hold it to boot it back up again.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue with Cognition? It seems to occur about once an hour for me, and sometimes it will go hours without shutting down. Also, it never appears to shutdown when I'm using it, but maybe that's just by chance.
Any other ideas how I could fix this? I've already Master Cleared. Could it be an app that doesn't play well? The only apps I've installed so far is Launcher Pro, Beautiful Widget and Titanium Backup, of course.
Are you serious??????? You open a thread just to ask this question?? Why not ask in the Cognition thread?!!!!

Because it has a trillion posts and my question would be swallowed up in about three minutes.
Same here but i dont think its cognition its the froyo leak. It was happening to me with the stock leak too so i know its not cog. If u think it is try the stock leak. But id wait to see if it still happens after offical build.

I would use Odin One Click and go back to stock for a few days and see what happens.
If your restoring with Titanium Backup, don't restore settings.

+1 b5.5,b6,b7 No shutdowns. Had them all the time on 2.1 JF6.
my random shutdown issue STOPPED as soon as I started running Cognition ROMS. DG was a lifesaver for my phone.
If your having them.. keep it on stock - if it repeats - you have a dud and need to get it replaced.
And when you flash it to stock.. don't load anything on it to see if it stops the random shutdown.
**edt... and um wth is this in the dev forum and not the Q&A?
Try this if you havent
No problems here either. I have been with Cog since the beginning and have never had this problem. I had it on another ROM from another Dev and immediately came back to Cog. I am now running Cog 2.2 Beta 7 and Love it! Fastest phone I have ever owned, very stable and GPS finally works!!! I would recommend flashing back to stock with Odin, doing a master clear and then installing Cog beta 7 via Rom Manager. I dont deal with Odin when flashing ROM's, only when going stock.
Hope this helps!
hey... i thought i was the only one getting the random shutdowns. i think i've been getting it since the first month of owning my phone. i get it 2-3 times a day. 1 if i'm lucky. i don't blame it on cognition's rom, tho... dunno what to do or who to ask about this problem.
but as for flashing back to stock and then the latest COG rom, i have tried that, but it didn't work...
I haven't run Cog beta7 for very long, but I can tell you I've never had a random shutdown for the entire time I've owned my phone (bought 3 days after release).
I'm tempted to tell you to try a different battery or something of that nature...

i would agree swapping the phones battery or the whole thing would be the way to go...
This is not an unusual issue. Seems even Moto apologized for it in their Froyo OTA for the Droid. Moto says a fix is coming. I would suspect it is a Froyo bug and something that will be worked out in a future update for all Froyo handsets.
No random shutdowns for me on stock leaked of any of the 2.2 cognitions
I've been having random shutdowns on Stock 2.1 Eclair for a while, there was another thread poster about this in the Q&A.
Even after I flashed to cognition b5.5, I get them, and with the same frequency. Sometimes I get 2 or 3 a day if I'm extremely unlucky, usually I'll only get one like once a week. I don't really find it to be too big of an annoyance.
I think it has something to do with an app, and not the phone itself. If you're getting them consistently 2-3 times a day then I guess you should just master clear, go back to plain stock, and then reflash cognition if you want to.
PEBCAC problem

PEBCAC problem "me thinks".
Its device specific, I had one that did it, they gave me a new one.

That definitely seems to be the case. I had a Captivate that was running JF6 that was completely stock other than being rooted. It started randomly shutting down within a couple of days. I thought it could be an issue with rooting it, so I flashed back to stock and used it like that for a few days. The random shutdown issue didn't go away, so I took my phone back and told them it was defective. They gave me another one and I haven't had the shutdown issue even once, through JF6, JH7, JI6, and Cognition 2.2 Beta 6 and now Beta 7.

[Q] Galaxy note keep turning itself off randomly

Hi
I am new to Android world. So please handle with care
I used to use an iPhone. Recently (bout 3 weeks ago) I bought a galaxy note and am loving it.
I was going through a lot about Android system and found out 'rooting a phone'.
so I rooted the note and installed Rocket rom v22, GoLauncher Ex and few apps like Setcpu, Adfree, Bank, Xchange etc. I don't have games or many apps on my phone.
My phone turns itself off randomly every now and then. during phone conversation it rebooted itself once so far. and when my phone is stand-by, I found my phone is turned off.
I am not sure why it's happening. Is there any settings i shouldn't set?? or ???
Could anyone please tell me how to fix this issue?
If the phone is faulty, I need to make my phone as the same as when I first got which I am not sure how to :-( yet
The first thing to do is go completely stock. Flash the lastest stock rom and see if that fixes the problem.
When using ICS ROMs there's a known bug called Sleep of Death (SOD) that is similar to what you're experiencing. The phone simply won't turn on the screen and you have to press the power button for several seconds to turn it on again.
Almost all GNote users experience this issue so don't worry about it. Going back to stock will not solve the problem.
Hi
Thanks for the reply.
Before the rom v22, I had v19. my phone still did turn itself off several times. after flash the room v22, it didn't happen as many as v19 so I am not sure that the ICS causes the issue.
anyway, I will try the one you suggested and see how I go.
Thank you

I am more worried about the alarm. if the phone turns itself off while i am in sleep, i won't be able to hear the alarm going off.
well if that happens again, i might have to get a alarm clock.
i was thinking of setcpu app might cause the issue... not sure though.
Thanks for your help
I experience the same issue when i was running stock. I've tried several stock versions but the problem still exists.

I have definitely never ever experience SOD when the phone is stock and lock.
The only time i did experience SOD is when i change to modded kernel.
I'm running stock with cf root and have never ever experienced this, so not all notes are affected. That would really suck!

Never had Sleep of Death on stock rom.
I am on stock ICS Rom n it has happenedwith me twice.
My GNote goes dead randomly and only starts up after pulling out battery.
Weird!
Install an ICS from Clean
Start from a Stock ICS rom using PC Odin, then follow my Post as follow :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26772618&postcount=12
Try another rom other than that you had, or a higher versionof it.
The MIDTEAM v1.4.2 is Good and Stable.
Good Luck
I had this problem most of ICS ROMs on my Galaxy Note. SO I guess it's an ICS related bug and it is very uncomfortable to have to reset it to unlock it .
I too have tried several Stock ROMs but it still gets into the Sleep of Death at least once a day.
I guess that it should help to have a Kernel that changes the Deep Sleep settings...
Of my 2 GNotes, one of them had this problem. Happens when you put the note on the table with small drop or whatsoever.
The problem disappeared when inserted 3-fold 80g paper between battery and the edge of battery compartment. The battery tolerance is not so tight so when small drop (like putting on the windowsill) happens, the phone shut down.
The problem completely disappeared after inserting paper.
Of course, more professional would be go to Samsung repairs and show it and ask for replacement - either battery or phone internal casing. You can reproduce the problem by turning the screen on and dropping phone 10cm into hard surface.
But I did not bother.
I won't say that yours has exactly the same problem. But check the tolerances of battery 1st. Sometimes solutions are too obvious to see 'em.
I upgraded from stock to CM9 3 days ago and my Note has turned off several times a day since then. Never before upgrade, so I don't think it has to do with battery being loose in its compartment - not in my case.
I am loving ICS, but I will have to downgrade to gingerbread to get rid of this irritating bug.
this is happening to my galaxy nexus!!! yeah it turns off at random like sleep of death and small drops can trigger it. if i knew this could happen i would have never rooted
lol root itself has nothing to do with it.
if small drops cause it, and paper adding in compartment fixes it. its the gap between battery and whatever should fixate it.
if it occurs during deep sleep, dig into logs what you can find there. Also check roms/kernels feedback if others have it with that version. Many ways to illiminate possibilities.
I miss some good analyzes in this is issue from those experiencing stuff. Android I guess is not user friendly that way.

Galaxy Note Sleep of Death on 4.1.2 JB
I'm still trying to figure this out... I had hoped that with Samsung Stock upgrade to 4.1.2 it would be fixed but its not... anybody still experiencing this problem?
Things that I have tried
Move all apps from Internal SD Card (USB) and format
Factory Reset
Paper wedge between battery
Opened and re-connected all connectors to Motherboard
Install CPUSpy (deep sleep is OK)
I'm at wits end now, and this problem is very apparent. I havn't wanted to flash to a custom rom, because I've seen reported that it still happens with whatever ROM whether stock or custom
Any more ideas on how to make the Sleep of Death go away?

Turning off problem too
I don't know if it is exactly the same problem, but my GNote keeps turning off every time, but not seem to be randomly. Looks like ti shut down every time a high performance is required. I tested several roms, ICS and JB, custom and stock, but the problem still goes on.
Please, any ideas?

[Q] spontaneous reboots while asleep, anyone else?

Hi
My S iii mini (i8190L) sometimes reboots spontaneously while it is just lying on the table. It has never happened while I was using the phone.
Now I wondering if more people have noticed the same spontaneous reboots.
It could be an app that is misbehaving, the OS itself or be hardware related. I've been on different stock ROMs (now I'm on baseband i8190LUBAMH1, the newest as far as I know), but also on BenzROM.
My phone was rooted from day one. I've read that SuperSU might be the problem? Anyone changed to SuperUser?
My best guess that it is some background process that kicks in while the phone is sleeping.

You could try another kernel and see if it gets sorted out.

I have used the kernels that came with the firmware (and rooted them afterwards). So right now I'm on 3.0.31-1346193, which is the newest kernel for the i8190L I think. So far, I haven't had any reboots with this kernel, but I've been de-installing apps and rebooted so often that the spontaneous reboot didn't had a change to occur. I'll keep my breath for a while and my fingers crossed...
Did you solve it? My brother has the same issue, his phone has gone to RMA 4 times (everytime they flash it with a different stock rom) and hi still have problems, and the phone company refuse to change the phone, as they say they can't find any problems.
Thanks

GS5 Random freezes

So my phone has been acting weird since 5.1.1 came out for AT&T. It all happened two days after I updated it. At first it began to freeze so i didn't think too much about it, but it continued to do it so i got frustrated. I did a factory reset i wipe the cache an it continued to freeze and overheat even when the phone was clean. Then after i bricked it a month ago with odin and I brought it back last night to life. After i reinstalled the OS through the SD card but it still kept freezing and overheating on me randomly. Since then I've been using an iPhone cause this phone is unusable at all. Is it the version that is messed up? or is it my phone's hardware? please help I really want to use this phone i barely bought it off of ebay like 4 months ago /:

Note 4 major slowdown / bugs all around / boot loops.

So recently my Note 4 decided it's time to make my life hell and it's slow, buggy, and all around a terrible performer. I don't know what has caused this.
I've flashed the stock rom in odin, no improvement. No matter the ROM, kernel, root/noroot, it's still buggy and slow. Abnormally slow. Screen locks randomly, apps freeze up very often, etc. Honestly I'd like to just give up and get a new phone - but I don't have the money. Is there anything I'm not considering? To me it feels like I've done everything and I'm tired of dealing with this.
It's either being very slow, randomly locking, or straight up getting in a bootloop for 15 minutes and coming out like "yumad".
Just an update - I started getting random crashes where it complained about the EMMC. So I googled the exact code and it's very apparent my phone has a bad motherboard (bad flash storage, to be exact). So I've replaced it. Consider this thread done.

Yeah, I'm not so sure it's the motherboard and lots of people have been having this issue.

Mine is an original Note 4 and I have never had any problems, but before I install a new ROM, I always do a complete wipe of the Internal storage, including an fstrim of the system, data and cache. This may seem excessive to some, but I never have had any problems.
