I think you're confusing unlocked with rooted. A custom rom is typically rooted but you will still be locked to your carrier. To unlock you need to get a code from your carrier, they generally are reluctant to do this, or buy one on line.

How to root Rogers Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE SGH-I957R??
Hey guys,
I've been searching and searching for a way to root my Galaxy tab 8.9 lte from Rogers in Canada. The model is SGH-I957R. I have it updated to ICS so I'm hoping it's still possible, or maybe I could flash back to 3.2 and then root it but I can't find a file to let me flash it back either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam

I am wanting a subsidy unlock. It is alreaddy rooted you can't run dannyrom2 without it rooyed. If the only way to unlock it is by requesting code and not flashing then that's the option I only have . Unless... hoping for the clutch post....

To root, first flash this http:\\d-h.st/fqw (TWRP) in odin PDA. This will install the custom recovery. Then place this http:\\d-h.st/vjq (super SU-busybox) on your sd card in the tab. Just put it somewhere where you'll remember where. Boot into the custom recovery, hold power and vol. up until you see the samsung logo and release power while still holding vol. In custom recovery install super SU-busybox. You'll be rooted! Once on your tab open super SU and it will ask you to upgrade to the latest. All files have been tested on my i957.
That's awesome, thanks for the info. I'm about to try it right now.

Just flash the rom and then gapps in the custom recovery like you did super su. Except before flashing the rom wipe cache, dalvic, and system and factory reset. Wiping system will remove all ROMs so don't boot up before flashing your new rom. If you do you could brick your device.
And back everything up first. Factory reset will delete all your apps and settings.
PS, most custom roms are rooted so you didn't need to root your device first, just needed to install jb rom.

See nrvates building cm10. In the i957 development forum. Download the rom and gapps [Google apps]. In twrp do the wipes mentioned in my last post. Flash the rom just like you did the super su then flash the gapps (both in twrp) The last post in nrvates thread has a link to the rom. If the gapps link isn't working Google latest gapps and download one ending in something like 21011, don't remember exactly what it is. Then boot and you'll be running cm10 jelly bean.

Okay so I flashed the rom and then the gapps but it wouldn't boot properly after that, it came up saying Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 lte, and then a Samsung screen but then it was just a black screen. I can still boot back into twrp to flash something else to get it working again but I'm wondering if there's anything obvious that I may have done wrong. I wiped dalvik and cache and system and factory reset. Will this rom work on the i957r from Rogers? This is the tablet that I have. I noticed the file for the rom has att in the file name.

ML2 SafeStrap ROM Flashing Guide!
Hello Guys!
This is my guide for flashing most galaxy S4 ROM's on ML2 without custom kernel .
•First Root your phone with this method: Root On ML2 OTA!
•Then Grab the SS.apk VERSION 3.71 Download install th app, Open it and press on install recovery Safestrap in the app.
•After that download a 4.3 ROM (For now only 4.3 and 4.2.2 work...) and the ML2 modules from here: ML2 modules
•Reboot into SS and make a new Create ROM-Slot.
•As soon as the boot partition is done click install (If it is green) and chose your ROM and flash it and then flash the Modules.
•Reboot and all done!
Lets Say I chose Hyperdrive RLS15, So I root my phone, Input SS, and download the Hyperdrive ROM, then I reboot into SafeStrap and make a new boot partition flash the ROM and after Aroma UNcheck Reboot, then flash Modules and only then reboot.
If IMEI or WiFi doesn't work try my guide: Transformix's IMEI and WiFi FIX
BUGS: Camera FC.
CAMERA FIX? <Needs testers!
Camera Patch for ML2
Just boot into SafeStrap's TWRP and flash it!
Hpe you like my guide

Thank for for this guide. Quick question, I have Hyperdrive SL15 with the modules and att compatability pack but after doing everything step by step I don't have data or wifi. My question is, with the imie wifi fix you posted, will that affect my stock rom? I still have data and wifi if I run stock but not Hyperdrive. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I don't want to lose my data & wifi on my stock. My phone is my only online source.

Truth is that I really don't know. Flash the ML2 models again.
I would try for you but I left Hyperdrive because it was too mushy with lots of addons everywhere.
IF modules don't work I would flash the IMEI fix for ML2.

hi @transformix i follow your guide and i flash a few roms all of them works but i couldn't make the camera to work . it is possible that i could flash 4.2 roms on the 4.3 bootloader? as i know from past experiences it could brick things and as im a newbie here i hadn't read enough yet to see if this could be possible im thinking about gpe rom as it at least no matter how old it is is aosp and it could make fell better than the crappy tw stock rom .

You flashed/stocked back to odin ne3 and then again flashed the rom. is this time wifi working ?
Correct and yes WiFi is working. The only issue is that if you want to turn off or reboot your phone, you have to turn off WiFi first, else it does not work properly when you not back up. However, even if you forget to do that little trick, a hot reboot fixes Wi-Fi. Otherwise, there aren't any issues with WiFi or in general

I flashed this rom because I can't stand touchwiz (stock Samsung); I really wanted the look and feel of AOSP/stock android. The battery life isn't as good as stock with Galaxy Mod Ultimate (you can still use it, it's just the improvement isn't as noticeable). I'm not quite sure what you mean by gesture? This is an AOSP-style rom so all of Samsung's gimmicky little add-ins such as (but not limited to) air gesture, smart screen, all share, s-beam, s-voice, etc. are not present at all. I think it really comes down to a matter of preference. I have/had around a dozen devices, not all Samsung, and most are running cyanogenmod or something based off of it. Therefore I wanted this rom since it's the closest to cm we're going to get with a locked bootloader. If you like the look and feel of touchwiz or all the features Samsung adds in, or if you're super concerned about battery life, you might want to stick with stock. (Don't let the battery life be the only deciding factor, it's not that bad).

Honestly its a very efficient rom, most things seem to work however randomly for me some apps will stop working, however I believe that to be an app problem not a rom problem. I treat it as a sort of bare essentials rom, if you want a small rom then its worth it. I've installed viper4android and other root apps and those also work perfectly, I believed i flashed it about a week ago and everything is fine
Q&A for [KERNEL][N6] franco.Kernel - r1
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for [KERNEL][N6] franco.Kernel - r1. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!

does this kernel work on all phones, sprint att and such with stock roms or do i need a custom rom?
also, i am used to flashing roms and kernels on galaxy phones, so this is new to me. Is it the same process? Get into TWRP and install the zip? Or do i need to do a complete wipe? The kernel is universal, works for everything. Just flash the zip same process, boot into twrp and flash the kernel and then reboot.
It's as simple as that. If you want to return to stock then flash stock kernel zip, it's simple.

For those of us running LS your home and multitasking buttons will disappear. You can use pie controls to counter this. Also your lock screen won't work it will just shown your home screen when you dt2w or press the power to wake the device. I don't use a lock code so this is what happens to me. I love Franco's kernels after using them on my Nexus 7 and I can't wait to use this one once the issues are fixed.

Franco kernel updater. It's the app that companions the kernel which let's you update the kernel with a click of a button as well as tweak settings of the kernel and change colors and have profiles etc.
It's 30 percent off right now. Is it worth buying? Of course, it's on sale and still holiday season.

You can flash the kernel with on click via the app. Its painless and awesome. If you haven't used the app before check out the options there are even ones to save previous kernels and per app settings. The app is worth every penny.

I don't mean to be rude or anything but yeah. Piracy isn't something we endorse on xda, it's a app that was well thought out in terms of design and is updated quite frequently. Plus it's on sale!
You won't regret buying it for the convenience of flashing newer versions of the kernel.

Flashed 15 different times today, stock OOS 7.0. camera works fine on stock, even with magisk installed. As soon as I flash any custom kernel the camera app gets unknown error. Tried clearing cache, etc everything. Only stock kernel works. What gives?
You might want to read the kernel threads for help. Seems like if it was a kernel issue like you claim then someone else might have noticed it. Sounds like user error to me

What it's a shame is that there are people who don't know how to read.
Magisk does work with custom kernels, but the order you flash them in is important. Magisk alters certain files in the /boot partition, which is also where the kernel is located. You should flash Magisk first over a clean ROM prior to flashing any custom kernels, or else you may run into issues. If an update for Magisk is pushed, you should also install it in the following order:
1) Dirty flash ROM (or stock kernel)
2) Flash Magisk
3) Flash custom kernel
I'm currently using Magisk v11.6 with Franco's r16 on OOS 4.1.0 without a problem.
Don't mean to be rude, but did you flash the compatible kernel; and not using adb sideload problems; on TWRP 3.0.4-1?
If you did, well then Magisk seems to be a problem for you.
And do post logs next time of you encounter a problem until and unless you are sure you everybody can reproduce that problem with the steps mentioned (which should be though)
If you're still in Android 7.0 (like me), do not use the latest custom kernel release, it will break your camera (Unknown Error). I think it's because the dev has rebased their kernel to the new Android 7.1.1.
Currently, I'm still on FredomOS 2.5 (OOS 4.0.3) and its combined with BluSpark v.72 (last release before the 7.1.1 rebase).
I don't want to use the latest OOS update since it's still full of annoying bugs.
In my opinion only people who understand what they are doing with this kind of stuff should get the oneplus 3 or 3t as it isn't very noob friendly and takes someone that is some what an advanced user or at least knows a little about flashing ROMs and kernels etc..... Or at least is willing to search around and read before they complain to everyone that they can't figure it out. If you want a phone that is simple and noob use friendly then go to Samsung or Apple. not oneplus as phone from this company are aimed at the intermediate up to power user that understands how to solve irregular problems. I've had none of these issues even when I was using my oneplus x. I use the unofficial RR with ex kernel and no problems with camera or anything and great battery life. Bottom line is (in my opinion anyways) oneplus phones are for the more technically savvy so if you aren't some one like that expect to run in to difficulties and have to do some deep research in certain cases. But this is a great community here at xda and we are all willing to help as much as we can but patience is a must.

Same exact order as you, even flashed fresh ROM and kernel only. Can't explain it at all. For now, I'm on stock with no custom kernel but have magisk.

No sideload, using most recent TWRP, and yes, I will have logs to post tomorrow. As a quick flasher I never really bother for the logs, but this time I'm getting down to the bottom of this. I'll have logs tomorrow

If you're still in Android 7.0 (like me), do not use the latest custom kernel release, it will break your camera (Unknown Error). I think it's because the dev has rebased their kernel to the new Android 7.1.1.

Flashing kernels made for 7.1.1 on 7.0 FW.

You might want to read the kernel threads for help. Seems like if it was a kernel issue like you claim then someone else might have noticed it. Sounds like user error to me

Wow, smartass answer for someone who can't flash a kernel without breaking the camera.
Actually, the answer is the solution you need, search and read.

Hi all !
This discussion might be related with my issue explained here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/help/camera-flashlight-youtube-t3886260
but only thing is I never flashed custom kernels, issue appears after a official update !
Any opinion, ideas ?
Thanks
