Hi I am coming form a heavily used Note 2. As a business owner the Note 2 was my most important piece of equipment!!! Plus being always on the go it's flash video capabilities made being away from home easy. I never missed a basketball game or big fight. Watched them right on my phone. I remember being at a restaurant one Saturday night away from home and having the whole bar area crowd around my phone to watch a big fight. Pretty cool and useful. Unfortunately my Note 2 bit the dust and cant be fixed for reasonable money. Sprint store talked me into a Note 5 for my upgrade and contract renewal with a cheaper plan.
I was wondering if there are any ways to get similar apps or mods on my Note 5 Without rooting it. I am very dissapointed and feel like taking it back. Not impressed at all. Especially since I am out of pocket $200 and had to sign a 2 year plan. Maybe somebody can help or suggest some things. Or at least this can be a WARNING to potential buyers of the phones REAL LIFE CAPABILITIES AND LIMITS. Not some generic commercial hype or store sales pitch of since its a #5 it is better and does more things than the earlier numbered phones.
1. No live sports or new movie streams though web browsers
Lack of flash support ... I used flash websites to stream live sports or newer movies on my Note 2. I have downloaded the proper Adobe Flash version on the Note 5. I have also downloaded and enabled browsers like Firefox, Flash Fox, and Dolphin.
I have verified that flash is working. However, the sites for the live sports and movies DO NOT work. These sites all worked fine with the Note 2 stock browser.... Any other flash browser suggestions???? Anyway to download or install the Note 2 stock browser on Note 5?????
2. Mirroring. Watching EXACTLY what you see on your phone to a big TV.
All share Samsung data caster. I bought an expensive Samsung data caster that worked well to mirror my phone on to my living room TV.....Anyway to use this with my Note 5????? I don't see the option to on the phone.
Will a MHL cord to hdmi still mirror for a note 5??????
3. Using your internet and making a phone call at the same time.
Since I travel I use my phone as a modem for my laptop and computers....Tether... On my Note 2 with the PDA.net app it worked great. Was faster than any home internet I ever had. I could be on the phone and be browsing the web on my computer at the same time. It worked so well I cancelled my home ISP. It also came in handy even to just look things up on the phones internet while you were talking to clients.... I was VERY UPSET to find out that I can not do any of this on the Note 5. This is a major deal. I don't get this one at all. Any way to fix???????
4. Sound for music is not anything better.
5. Notifications and display are far less attention grabbing than on the Note 2. Easily miss texts or overlook them. The notification L.E.D.S are super WEAK.
6. My battery drains way faster! It does charge faster though. But I don't think this will be a good device to have where charging is not an option for a while.
7. You cant delete photos from the gallery... You have to open up the camera app to delete them... This seems so strange and pointless. Am I missing something here??????
Would appreciate any help or feedback on these issues. Thanks...
1. Not sure
2. Chromecast/Fire Stick, both work as I have personally tested this and both are available for under 50 dollars. (The screen mirroring option is in the quick toggles on your Note 5, mirrors everything on the screen not just compatible apps.)
3.Have not tested this
4. I think you need better headphones if you think it does not sound better.
5. Have not noticed this either
6. Disable unneeded apps, I am getting great battery life from mine.

Thanks for the info and response!!!!
2. I tried the the "quick connect" feature in the toggle down menu. IT WORKED with my DATA CASTER. I just don't like how it cuts the WI FI on too. i can live with that though. I now have mirroring without having to buy something else. Thanks!!!!
3. Yeah I have tested and confirmed with Sprint. Supposedly its a big deal and a lot of people are sending their phones back because of this. Literally just had a real life scenario where i needed to be on the phone and browse the web but couldn't..
4. I have $60 earbuds from Sienheiser. Maybe your ears work better or you have better head phones. I'm not willing to pay any more than $60 or buy another pair. They are less than a year old. But the sound is great. Just hard for my ears to pick up the difference. Both Note 2 and note 5 sound excellent though.
5. I also noticed that if you stay on a text message conversation screen and leave the screen on. . . . It will not ring or notify you if an additional text from that sender comes through. I don't like that at all. I want it to ring and vibrate for every text no matter what!
6. Can you clarify what you mean by disable????? Like delete???? Which ones did you get rid of????
7. I will look into QuickPic.....I'm guessing its an app in the play store?
Was your note 2 on lollipop? I have a feeling son of the things like notifications might be a lollipop thing not a note 5 thing
Go to your setting and adjust everything till it feels like your ideal phone.
If you're near wifi you can talk and be online at the same time l

No i didnt have lollipop. I tried and played with the notification settings. Those are more limited too. Using wifi isnt an option for me often because i cancelled my home isp because tethering was faster and more dependable.

I have tried first row sports. With no luck. Freezes after a second at best.
Are you able to go full screen?
What link is working for you?
What is Dolphin jetpack?
Thanks for the help!
Just an extension of dolphin browser in the marketplace. Give it a go

1) You had an Android device from 2012. The internet and Google have since moved on to HTML5. Flash is dead. Very few OSs support flash anymore. This isn't a phone issue. The unfortunate issue is your websites still utilize flash which is dangerous and a battery hog. A lot of security flaws and too much memory usage.
2)DL AllCast from the Google Play store, it hacks into any casting device. I have an AppleTV (back when I used to be pro Apple) and I use it constantly. All your casting needs whether it's a movie, phone screen, music, gallery etc all at your fingertips.
3)This is a Sprint issue not a phone issue. Sprint uses CMDA technology which requires dual cellular radios in order to surf and talk. Every other carrier supports simultaneous voice and data. I have Verizon (also CDMA, but I have dual radios in my phone) and can do it with my phone. When the phones hit a particular carrier, they decide to upgrade the radios to do surf/talk. If they decide not to which Sprint did not. You can't. Some claim this is a way to keep they're network bandwidth higher. Its 2015, regardless the phone should be able to do it.
4) The Note 5 came with a lot of new audio support modes. One feature I would recommend is using adaptic. It recognizes your ears ability to sense particular frequencies and changes the sound to your ears which makes a lot of difference.
5) You change change your notification settings in the individual apps your speaking off. The LED notification can be adjusted to your liking within settings. If this doesn't work. You can always DL an app that uses your phones flash to flash when your getting a notification (I know, I know.... Like an iPhone but it works great).
6). Lollipop has not been kind to device batteries. A lot of unnecessary system processes and apps. There are other posts within the Note 5 category that will guide you on debloating and disabling those packages and apps to gain better performance. Again not a phone issue but a software issue. Android M (which these phones will be first in-line to get) will change a lot of the problems they created in Lollipop. The Note 5 is not the only phone that suffers from this problem. A lot of them do.
7) Yes you can, but its hidden behind a sub menu. Long press on the photo you want to delete and it will pop open the delete function in the top menu bar (see image attached)
Hope this all helps. I suggest dumping Sprint and coming to Verizon. While it's not cheaper. It certainly is much better. Speeds, tethering, and service pretty much everywhere.

Thanks for all the info I really appreciate that!!!!!!:good:
1. Is 3 years really that long.... When you spend that much money for something i would expect to have that option. You don't have to use a or go on a flash site if you don't want to....Flash is alive and well. Like I had mentioned earlier, people who stream Live sports and recent movie releases are all still Flash sites. I do not know of one html5 site that live streams sports.... Would love to find one if its out there though
2. I got the stock app to work with my Samsung All share Data caster. It is really choppy though. Thanks I will give that one a try and see if its any better
3. Wow that makes me even angrier with Sprint. i have tried to go to Verizon and t-mobile. They both have said stick with Sprint. My bills would be over twice as much with them because they don't do true unlimited Data like sprint does. Even when they do offer it, they bottleneck and slow your speed down once you reach a certain amount of data... My data usage makes Sprint my only choice and the fastest for me.
4. Will try thanks!!!!!
5. Note 5 has that from factory. I have it turned on. but in the day light the white flash is not to visible. Also, not visible when the phone is screen up. I have played with the settings. The notification LED just isn't that bright, big, flashes frequent enough to work as well as the older one. The Flash notification though is super helpful at night or in the dark.
6. If I keep the phone I will look into that. However, I find all the battery life claims with factory settings....auto screen brightness, keeping all apps closed, with just normal daily use to be terrible. I find it hard to believe that getting rid of the bloat-ware will take it form terrible to acceptable, but i'll take your word for it ... I hope so.
7. No attached image is showing for me????? I tried tapping and holding the pic and nothing is happening.......still only gives the option to share.
I think dolphin browser still works with flash. you will have to find the flash apk download though.

Flash is dead:
http://www.businessinsider.com/google-chrome-wont-autoplay-flash-ads-2015-8
In device terms with technology coming out. Yes 3 years is old enough.
With phone service you get what you pay for. I've never had a dropped call, network failure, or internet outtage. And from previous experiences living in the sticks of Kentucky. I still got 4G Verizon. Now I'm in Florida and never lower then 3 bars of coverage. I pay $234 a month for two phones and a tablet. I pay for 10gb and I get additional 5gb of data added to my plan per month for free as I am a loyal Verizon Customer. So it works out great.
Idk why it didn't post so my apologies.
Here are photos of the deleting procedure and my battery life on my phone after stream lining it. I average 18-22 hrs on a single charge. Depending on usage.

Still cant get flash, dolphin, and front row to work....
Some more updates
- Still cant get flash for front row to work with Dolphin.
More updates:
-LED notifications are super weak and almost not visible on bright sunny days
- Have missed several text because if I leave a text conversation open if a text from that sender comes through It wont notify you.
-Also all free messaging apps wont work while you are on the phone. Like KIK and others. You can not receive any of those messages until you get off the phone . Makes me wonder if Email is like this too???? How counter productive and backwards...
They literally have taken out more features and all multi tasking... So what do I care if the hardware is better????? IT DOES WAY LESS!!!!!

Yeah that part is true and no mapping and no nothing about data when your on a call. But you can hear a cricket fart at 200 paces! But again that is a sprint thing. Sprint blames it onSamsung but Samsung builds to sprints specs.

I'm on the edge of pulling the trigger for a NC. Since the NC was never intended to be a full fledge tablet I'm sure there are some annoyances from you rooted users. Once you get everything setup what are the cons? I have a rooted Samsung Vibrant running ClockWork on Team Whiskey, Nero ROM. What I'm reading I don't think I will go to Froyo since it is definitely usable but I get annoyed by such things like having to turn on/off screen to fix screen lag. I will most likely just keep it rooted from stock. The reason I'm interested in it is:
Lightweight, small form factor
Great resolution
Of course price.
I have two gripes:
1. No physical back button
2. Adhoc wifi requires turning on/off wifi
Both of these are hardware issues and not related to rooting.
I don't use the in-store feature so not having that doesn't bother me.
Do it, you can always unroot.

Just want to clarify, don't have a NC yet. Don't want to buy it as an ereader.

I don't know that the lack of physical back button bothers me, it has a built in gesture for back (swipe to the left on the menu bar) so it's not really a limitation, more a preference thing. The only real downside I've seen is lack of in-store features. There are some issues with the root, mainly some market issues where for some reason all of the programs don't show up. I used the NC for a couple of weeks in stock form and then decided to root, definitely worth it just for the sake of getting a browser with multi-touch enabled. However, I read a lot so that factors into how much I like it.
If you're just using it as an android tablet, it's really good. No GPS, no cameras, no 3g connection, but other than that it's fast with the best screen I've seen on a tablet and is just the right size. My phone has a 5mpx camera, 720p video and GPS and I have it on me all the time, so no need for any of that in a tablet. It also acts as a hotspot, so no need for 3g on the tablet. It's a perfect compliment to a decent smartphone.
If you love to tinker there's no cons. (and if you want a back button, Autonooter comes with Soft Keys that'll put one on the screen for you)
Despite the time it took to learn how to do it, and what to do with it afterwards, I got what I paid for and more. I love to learn and troubleshoot, so rooting this device has been a real treat.
At the moment I have a fully functional tablet that I use quite often around the house and at work. It's a convenient browser (I use Opera Mobile which has pinch zoom and slightly better page rendering than the build in browser), a quick source of the news thanks to a program included in the Autonooter kit, and a useful quick-note taking device.
I'll admit, my primary use for it is browsing, but when you root this thing, you can use any browser you want. I use Opera, but Skyfire and Dolphin HD are also good.
In addition to that, it makes a great portable movie player. The built in player supports MP4 and one other format, but if you root it, you can download Rock Player and play most commonly used video formats.
It's Youtube performance is excellent too, and there's quite a few Youtube video downloaders available in case you want to save your favorites to the SDCard.
Speaking of that, you will want to buy an SDCard. It doesn't come with one, and you might want more than the 5GB free of space you get out of the box.
All in all, it's pretty much a computer, and once you learn how to do everything to liberate it from it's shackles, there's no limit to what you can do with it.
As a tablet, it is awesome, and only getting more so. Lets be real - its GPU is the same as the Droid X, and is not the most perful on the market. Tegra 2 (and one or two others) will soundly beat it, but at a price. Cheaper T2 platforms tend (so far) to have horrible screens, poor battery life, and are large. Other devices like the Tab, just are way over priced.
I think the nook has struck an excellent ballance. It has an excellent CPU, a capable GPU, plenty of ram, and one of the best looking screens out there. I love its form factor (the bezel is one of few NON ugly ones out there), handling, and capabilities, and the price is excellent ($250).
It is also really getting a community behind it, and i think we will see in the near future, many more custom ROMS which speed things up, add features (bluetooth), and generally improve user experience. Right now is an exciting time to be a nook owner..
If you are not planning on reading you MUST buy a memory card. Many android apps are hard coded to look in /sdcard for things and can't read or write to the internal memory on the nook. Google earth is one example. This could probably be fixed by a developer in a custom rom.

That was one of my main reasons for choosing it over the Archos 70. I think the fact that the NC provides such great bang for the buck and is available at retail outlets across the USA gives it the potential to have a much larger following than something like the A70.
Adding bluetooth functionality will complete this thing.
The only con I've really felt was no mic :/ there slapped in crappy 10 dollar mp3s but not a eReader for memos/notes (tho its not useful) I could see voice search for books valuable.
Obviously want it for Voip not memos, Bt will be a fix but still.
sent from a Nook Color using xda-app
Ditto to above. The lack of a Back button can be worked around, and really only comes into play while in certain apps that don't show the standard Nook status bar at the bottom. So you can't swipe. Using SoftKeys, and setup the right way, (see forum for more info on that), then you can change the Nook button to launch SoftKeys, which gives you the Back button, and also, as a bonus, a Task Switcher pops up at the same time.
The only drawback I see is that in order to have decent sized icons and text, you need to change the density of the screen. This is fine for everything except the built in Nook apps, like the Store and what-not. The reader itself is fine. It just cuts off some of the text, but it's still usable. Personally, I just use the Kindle app, anyway, and don't ever launch the Nook apps, so it's a non-issue for me.
EDIT: I also dearly want Bluetooth to work, so I can use my GPS and BT headphones. But at least there's a BT radio in the thing. Just need to get one of the wizards to get it working. Last I heard, it was working, but only to two feet. Give me 3 feet and I'll be happy. The lack of Flash is a real bummer, of course, but also to be fixed in an upcoming 2.2 release from B&N, or you could go and install 2.2 right now and boot from sd card. Apparently, it's working pretty well. And, the lack of a mic is a small bummer, but I'm also hoping a wizard will write a USB driver that will work with a webcam/mic. All do-able stuff. Just a little time needed.
As a tablet its great. It has shortcomings like others have said but you have to take into consideration that this hardware with an IPS screen for $250 is an absolute steal even considering those shortcomings.
I am a long-time Kindle user who recently got into the world of Android with my first smartphone purchase (HTC Aria). I have really fallen in love with Android, in large part due to the excellent community here at XDA. I had started looking for an Android Tablet and stumbled across all of the info about the Nook, after a week or two of research, I decided to just go for it. I figured if I bought it at Walmart, I would have at least 30 days to decide if I wanted to keep it... and even if I bricked it somehow, I don't think Walmart customer service would know the difference and would still refund my purchase. Well, I bought the Nook Wednesday morning, rooted immediately and ended up selling my Kindle Thursday night to a co-worker. This is the real deal and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an e-reader and tablet device, as long as they enjoy modifying it.
P.S. I haven't figured out why everyone feels the need to change the LCD density settings... everything looks great stock to my eye.

Just curious, what are you using ad-hoc wireless for? I use my android phone as a wireless hot-spot to provide internet to my Nook all night at work, that works fine, but I'm guessing that's not really ad-hoc or what you were referring to anyway.
I dont care for bluetooth, gps, or webcam. It doesnt bother me that flash doesnt work. I have flash on my phone and frankly, flash just makes webite load longer and most flash is just ads. It was an ok device preroot, now its a cheap capable tablet. I use it more than my pc. The only major gripe i have is that the edges of the screen seems to not register as well as the middle. But its not a dealbreaker.
Thanks guys. Just got one and its great! I was a bit skeptical at first after seeing before the root. Good info!

The issue with Ad-Hoc is that some devices can not connect to Ad-Hoc networks. They can only connect to Infrastructure mode WiFi networks.
So the problem presents itself when a rooted phone using a wireless tether app is only capable of sharing WiFi via a Ad-Hoc network (Motorola Droid). The Nook Color then can not see the Ad-Hoc network and is unable to connect.
So the Ad-Hoc WiFi fix allows the Nook Color to see and connect to Ad-Hoc networks as well as Infrastructure networks.
If you have a newer phone, like the Droid X, I believe those phones transmit WiFi via Infrastructure mode, so there is no problem connecting any device to it as all devices work with infrastructure mode.
I hope that all makes sense.
Yep, that explains it. I wasn't aware that older phones were using adhoc wifi. Is that a hardware limitation or a ROM limitation?

Hardware and software limitation, actually.
Most phones don't have a wifi chip capable of creating a true infrastructure-mode access point, but that is gradually changing. One of the reasons I bought an HTC Incredible is that it can.
But you also need tethering software that can use that mode. Newer versions of Wifi Tether can, for example, but older ones can't.
I wanted the Note to begin with but went with the S2. I'm in the process of selling my S2 now on CL. I have a few questions first:
1. How's the GPS?
2. ANy issues with AT&T(i assume I can just pop my AT&T SIM in and be good to go).
3. Do market apps work fine with the Notes big screen or do they look crappy because they weren't meant for a large screen?
4. How's every one generally liking the phone? How is it to make calls on (holding up to ones face not via BT).
Info is needed:
I'm on a unlimited 4G plan with AT&T (already using the S2 now) <-----not sure if this matters
Anything else would be excellent. Thanks again guys. Looking to get this then throw a ROM on for speed, remove bloat, tethering (should already be unlocked since not a carrier version) and cleanness.
I have found that it works EXACTLY like the GSII. The screen has one more row for shortcuts.
You'll not notice any difference, other than the enormous size difference. I have huge hands, so the size doesn't matter to me. It's actually quite comfortable.
I just hope some better cases come out for it. There is nothing but crap available now.
Thank you for your thoughts on the device. I'm looking to get one ASAP. Espically since that and the S2 will get ICS in Q1 2012. I know the international versions will get it much quicker then the carrier (AT&T, etc) locked down versions.
GPS is best on the market, literally. its using a new setup that allows for access to many more satellites and locks on better than most dedicated GPS units.
apps are hit and miss. some scale fully, some dont scale at all. theres an app to resize apps though.
i dont use BT when i make calls. its a good sized phone. only downside is that there is a fair bit of leakage out of the earpiece, ie. people around you can often hear both sides of the conversation.

Facebook and TapaTalk both work great. No issues whatsoever. I have not seen any rendering issues at all. There have been a few apps that won't download because they say they don't work on a tablet. The phone shows up as a tablet in the Android Market.

GPS is Fantastic! Better than the SGSII. ( I had SGSII for 3 weeks and also have a skyrocket) I routinely get a lock INSIDE my house!
You can pop your ATT SIM in but you must configure the APN for Data and MMS.
I have downloaded about 20 (not finished yet) apps to my GNote and they all look fine!
I have only made calls with bluetooth. I have not held to my ear yet except at home. It seems a bit large to do that. My skyrocket is crap with bluetooth but the GNote has been great with my car.
I do not like swipe or the samsung keyboard. Had to download the gingerbread keyboard. I have used several but keep coming back to that one.
Typing is 1000 time easier and better. For the life of me I could not type accurately type on the SGSII...
The screen resolution will blow you away! Watch that video that comes on it! WOW! There is no bloat as with ATT.
I do not know if ATT can detect the tether or not? When I log on to my ATT account it does not show the phone I am using. Does anyone know for sure?

1. The GPS is fantastic! It literally outperforms anything else I have ever used, including dedicated stand-alone GPS units.
2. There was initially an issue with AT&T where a particular range of Note IMEI's were being erroneously detected as a tablet device on the system. This issue seems to have been resolved. Even then, not every Note is/was affected anyway. The only other thing I can recommend (apart from configuring the correct APN's, which you can find throughout this forum) is to disable Fast Dormancy. Enter *#*#9900#*#* from your dialer and disable that feature from the menu that pops up. Basically it's a feature that AT&T doesn't use, and disabling it on your Note will vastly improve data speed and reliability.
3. So far I haven't had any issues with apps. Everything I've used looks fine so far.
4. Generally I'm loving the Note. There are a couple of minor (for me anyway) niggles. Mainly, it definitely is a big laggier than the SGS2, but not to the point where it's a deal breaker for me. The lag can mostly be attributed to software for now, but I expect these issues will mostly be solved when ICS is released for it. In the mean time, using SPB Shell 3D in tablet mode instead of TouchWiz has worked wonders. The side button on the s-pen is a little difficult to find just by feeling around for it, but that can be alleviated by etching a # pattern with a razor blade onto the button, giving it just a little more texture. As for actual call quality, honestly it's the clearest and best sounding call quality I have ever heard on a phone, period. Even better than most wired phones I've used!

Well, considering that our unlocked devices are free of any AT&T bloatware or other intrusiveware that would otherwise report the specific use of our own equipment, I'm willing to bet that the only way AT&T would be able to detect that we're tethering is to perform deep packet inspection in order to determine the kind of traffic going through the device. I have tethered with both my old unlocked SGS2 and now my Note using only the stock Android tethering ability with no issues. However, I would recommend that you tether only when absolutely necessary and not abuse it, lest you risk being spotted by the Evil Eye of Sauron. Basically, as long as you don't draw unnecessary attention to yourself, you should be fine.
My brother is having problems with his Note 4... It turns the volume all the way down when using the phone while running on the treadmill.... Doesn't matter if the phone is in his pocket or sitting still on the treadmill, doesn't matter which music app he's listening to and doesn't matter what headphones he's using.... The phone has been reset and it didn't make a difference, the phone has been replaced and the problem persist....hes removed Pandora, he removed power amp, he's removed live wallpapers AND all at the request of tmobile trouble shooting process... NOTHING!!! the problem seems to be isolate to him and up until today's search I couldn't find anyone else experiencing this issue... But finally today I came accross this thread
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...olume-turns-down-while-listening-pandora.html
But still no solution
Been running all the Pandora and stock music app no issue
BAD ASS NOTE 4 & BAD ASS GEAR S
I also have a Note 4 and so does my wife and neither of us have similar problems with our phones... I'm looking for help with this problem, not more examples of the problem being non existent... If it effected EVERYONE then I wouldn't be at a loss... I don't mean to be rude and if I seem that way please accept my apologies... I just don't want this to turn into a thread of testimonials of how no one else is experiencing this issue.
Just for ****s and giggles. Did you try to use phone while jogging outside. Does it still lowers volume down? That way you would eliminate possibility of interference from treadmill.

Actually at one point he thought it was Pandora because he was using the unlimited skip apk version of it and in his mind that made it suspect... He removed it and the problem went away... (so he thought) then while jogging home it happened again... He calls the phone "Samsuck" and it makes me feel like **** because I recommended it and I know he's very frustrated... I'm the techy person in the family (everyone comes to me) and I'm at a loss... I'm not an apk developer or a computer wiz of any sort but I'm slightly gifted and I've been installing competition level car audio for 20+ years, so electronics in general are 2nd nature to me
Are you using any sound enhancing software? When I was using Noozxoide Eizo sometimes I was losing volume control by mechanical buttons and touch control via screen after I change volume up/down rapidly. Only restarting phone fixed that. Since I no longer using that soft problem disappeared.

Have you reset the phone and have him just use it stock and only listen to mp3? Then start adding "music" apps one by one.

He's waiting for his 2nd replacement now... I asked him not to install ANYTHING except Pandora and to use that to work out for a few days and then start installing his apps one at a time... (honestly this is not something he wants to do) He's already extremely frustrated with his phone (as he should be) after all its almost an $800 device... Tmobile told him that if he has issues with this one, they would start talking about a different replacement... He's considering the LG G3... However the way tmobile worded it I'm not exactly sure if they will honestly let him out of this contract and into another... I hope they do... I myself know how electronics can behave and my frustration comes with some understanding that the process of elimination is a crucial part of the process in problems such as these... But even I don't understand Samsung and there constant [email protected]$465sh%)t with these phones... WiFi connectivity issues, incoming messages and alerts lowering bluetooth volume, OK Google no longer pausing music when activated and for me mirrorlink doesn't work with my Brand new pioneer deck... And it's clearly a Samsung issue (I've researched the crap out of it)... Everytime I purchase a new Samsung I tell myself it's my last one and EVERTIME they release another must have flagship phone... I'm a geek and can't help myself but my brother unfortunately just wants something that works without all these issues... He doesn't own a pc and I've taught him how to torrent straight to his device and he's hooked!!! Unlimited skip Pandora apk also is a must have for him and for those 2 reasons I can not recommend an iPhone but otherwise an iPhone would be a better fit for him... For me? Android all the way, all the time!! Thanks everyone for trying to help, I truly appreciate it
Assuming that your mirror link deck is 1.1 version try use this quide.

Thanks... It's a 2015 deck and although I don't remember the software version number I do know it's the same version mirrorlink as the note 4... Pioneer customer service assured me it was the device I needed for Note 4 compatibility... I'll try it, although the instructions are a little strange... Bluetooth has to be on?? As soon as the radio sees a USB connection, it disables Bluetooth and the other was make sure my phone is connected to WiFi or a network connection? Not sure what that's about??? I would have to deliberately turn it off so I'm sure it was on the last time I tried to enable mirrorlink.
I thought I'd share a few findings from my use of the MIX over the last few days to save others some frustration setting up and using this great phone. So far, I am really enjoying the phone!
It's runs on AT&T just fine - in some places, I'm getting LTE (4G) based on available bands and H+ or 3G in most others; I don't watch a lot of video on the phone so speed really hasn't been an issue.
Getting Google apps installed was very frustrating due to the download constantly crashing. Took me awhile to figure out the problem and, once I did, it installed easily. (see posts elsewhere on how to download and install from the MI store).
The biggest things I've learned is that you have to shut off the default download accelerator (I think it has trouble hitting servers in China from outside China) and allow downloads from cell connections (if you want that) in the MI store as those setting carry over into the Play store.
Open the MI "App Store" then under Account (you'll need to establish a MI account - easy to do), Downloads, on the top left click on the little bird and shut off the Xunlei accelerator - that fixed all my download problems. Then on the same downloads page, click on the 3 dots on the top right and chose Settings. Under the settings, you can change "download using mobile data is" to whatever setting you want; I set it as unlimited. Those settings carry over to the google play store (no matter what you chose on play) which is why I was having problems downloading apps over cellular even when I said it was ok.
I checked the phone for the adups spyware reported installed on phones from China using debloater and didn't find anything.
I installed Nova launcher (instead of the default launcher) with the pixel icon pack and am now very happy with the phone.
it's big (and slippery so I'm using the case that came with the unit) and a pretty cool phone. No lag, speed issues or anything else to report so far.
Wow... Just got my phone yesterday and was so annoyed with not being able to download most things, especially the Google Play Services. Thank you so much for this. Everything works now.
I thought it may have to do with my SIM card saying its not activated, even though I could still call, text, and had internet. Do you have the same message?
---------- Post added at 04:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:49 PM ----------
OP should be stickied because the download accelerator is turned on by default.

Have you tried to change battery performance plan or adjust all the settings which are related to app background data or secure the app to be alive when the screen is off?
I think with Android 6.0 and its doze stuff this will require some more efforts to make the settings workable for all those apps which require some push services when the screen is off.
@OP
Where did you find the Mi App Store? I don't see it in mine, I wonder if it was taken out by the shop that sold me the phone. Play Store says not available in my country when I did a search for it.

mine came right out of the box and it had the "app store" with the MI logo on it. it was not a custom rom - the off the shelf china rom and I selected English as the language. I still have a few funky things going on. Android Pay will work then sometimes I'll get an "Android Pay not available" error and have to uninstall/reinstall the app - I think this has something to do with permissions.
I haven't found anything that references doze mode and did a setting search and found nothing. the phone us running android 6

I have yet to find LTE, but HSPA+ is working well enough. (I'm in NH and MA). I'm on AT&T as well.
I am still getting used to how small this phone feels compared to my Huawei Mediapad X2, but the Mi Mix is so much faster! and background apps dont secretly close all the time like on the Huawei so that's a huge plus.
Slippery...... Yeah, why is this so slippery? I hate using cases with my phones, but I just don't think its a good idea on this one. Really only the thin sides need help, I thought about applying some sort of slim tape strips or skateboard griptape just on the very edge of the phone. I think this would help quite a bit...

I got some clear wide 3M packing tape, I'm going to put one piece over the back and up the 2 sides and see how that goes. When you say "bands 2 and maybe 4 get activated on my devices" Do you mean you have to do something at the carrier level to activate LTE? I haven't had an LTE phone on AT&T in a long time, too many overseas phones and have been using HSPA+ exclusively. I did go into the Sim card settings and select "Prefer LTE" but it never seems to stick? It just flashes away quickly no matter what I choose i there...

Sorry.. I meant to say they are seen on my devices or picked up (not activated)
check your local coverage using links I gave (2 of the 3)..although I could not find anything that would tell one which bands are in any given area - so some of the coverage shown could very well be coverage through bands not in the Mix like 17 on ATT or 12 on Tmobile or even 29 and 30 on ATT (less common I think).

Can you post a picture of NOVA launcher on your phone?
When you turn on Nova Launcher Persistent Search Bar mine automatically goes to Baidu for search instead of Google, I haven't been able to figure out that one yet..

That app looked great right up until i used it, the floating bar moves when you try to enter text. Very odd
.
What apn settings are you using for At&t? You had to manually put them in? I have the chinese version also on at&t and my data seems slow at times...
.
Awesome write up as I am considering using this phone as my daily driver if it is that good as I'm not really a fan of Samsung these days. Cant decide to get the Chinese version or wait for the global version but reading this and you are using AT&T as well it seems the Chinese version might be the way to go anyway. You have any issues setting up the phone or just pop in sim and go?
For the google pay problem go to NFC setting and set to HCE Wallet

Thanks for the reply, is there anyway you can send me a link or a copy of those apn settings? When I find them online and enter them, I save them and then they just disappear... Thanks!

I do get VoLTE but it's not HD Voice. I don't think wifi calling will work but I also haven't tried. From what I read last year about the mi 10 ultra CN model on ATT it didn't work.
I'd like to add. This phone is the the first time wireless charging has ever made sense to me. I got the 80w Xiaomi charger on Trading Shenzhen.
It's s complete game changer knowing you can just slap your phone down quickly and top off at anytime the same speed the wired charging would be.
What internet speeds you having with the device comparing with other global devices?
5G you got normally?

I don't have 5G in my area. But my LTE speeds are 50-150 mpbs with this device which is great.
Anybody managed to change the default launcher while keeping the gestures instead of on screen buttons?

That doesn't work on China nor global.
It's also bugged to hell on every other OEM including Samsung

Samsung bugged? I have t really noticed. You can customize Samsung as much as you want. Default launcher bothers me though. It's crappy we need to wait a week and all the personalization goes to drain as it's better to set up from scratch on xiaomi eu. And the missing notifications...

Here is my first update a little under 24 hours later with the China Mi 11 Ultra on ATT in the US.
1. This is a freaking beast of a phone. Completely worth the hype.
2. The China ROM is extremely usable. So much so I am considering using it full time. However, I did go ahead and start the 165 hour or whatever bootloader unlock process to unlock and flash .EU or Global if needed.
3.Basically all google services work flawlessly. Google Assistant triggers via hot word, opens up whatever is needed, etc. YouTube, YouTube music, etc.
4. Service with ATT has been shockingly good despite not having LTE band 66. ATT has no 5G in my market so I cannot speak to that. However, LTE has been fast. I live in a more rural part of the US than many of you could imagine, and I travel through some extremely rural areas. (I am talking driving past a field of 400 cows). I pull 50-150 mpbs download speed everywhere I check. While driving through that mega rural area I was on a phone call the whole time, and the quality was fine and did not drop at all.
5. If you are new to MIUI you need to know a few things. Go into every app that you care about's settings. Enable auto start and turn off MiUI battery saver. Then go into the security app, settings button at the top right. Click boost speed. ADD EVERY APP you want notifications from, along with the steps I mentioned above. MIUI is like a splash of cold water on your face if you are not used to a Chinese OEM. However, once you LEARN to play by its rules, and tweak. Basically, all of your quirky problems can be resolved. Just give it some time. Google problems, look them up on reddit. Most likely there is a way to tweak MIUI to stop doing something annoying you don't want it to do (such as virus scanning new apps). Be prepared to spend a good bit of time de-chinafying your ROM. The western and eastern market have vastly different taste in how Android should function.
6. The camera is amazing. Took some amazing photos of my kids. The shutter isn't quite as fast as my Pixel 4 xl, so there is some chance of motion blur. HOWEVER, its NOWHERE near as bad as Samsung's shutter lag and motion blur on moving objects. I would say with my s21 ultra and every Samsung before 3/5 photos of kids were unusable due to motion blur. On the Mi 11 Ultra is maybe 1/8-9 photos is a bit blurry if my kids are really moving.
7. All my banking apps work without issue. Specifically American Express.
8. It charges BLAZING fast. I went from 1% to fully charged in under an hour. Although I did not time it. The battery lasts a much longer time than the Global Mi 11 I tried a month ago. I have 2.5 hours of SOT today and still have 70% battery.
Here are some issues I have run into within 24 hours. None of them are major, but I figured I would note them.
1. I cannot get visual voicemail to work. Either through the Google Dialer app on Beta (Which literally works on every single phone on ATT that I have tried with) nor the ATT visual voicemail app. I am not giving up on this one as I think I can still fix it.
2. Google Pay fired up without a hitch, let me add cards flawlessly. However, when I went to use it at the grocery store. The NFC would scan, the phone would say "leave network connected while paying"(or something similar) and then the terminal would say transaction failed. I did this a few times and it happened every time. I'm not ready to say it doesn't work but I was done holding up the line. I just paid with my physical card and moved on. I will update if I can fix it.
3. Bluetooth behavior to my car, while making calls with audio output has been extremely buggy. It doesn't seem to matter if I toggle it from Bluetooth, to speaker to earpiece. It's like the audio gets lost. It doesn't happen every time either. It's just a buggy mess when it does. I'm wondering if it's some kind of output bug with my car and my Bluetooth Samsung watch and the phone doesn't know where to output the audio. Will update this with more troubleshooting.
I will update this thread as I spend more time with the device. AMA.
EDIT: Also to save some headaches. If you have a Samsung Watch. You need to change settings on all three apps. The wear app, the "watch(insert model) plug in app" and the samsung accessory app. Turn autostart on for all of them. Turn off battery optimization. Then go into security > Settings > Speed boost. Add all three to your speed boost. If you don't, every time you clear your recent apps the watch will disconnect.
Edit 2: Gpay is now working thanks to a tip from user: jirka607. Switch default wallet to HCE.
Edit 3: I've given up on visual voicemail. Just set missed calls to forward to Google Voice where I can check voicemail "visually" via the app.

Question for you. I bought the global version of the Mi 11 Ultra. Am waiting for delivery. I also have the Samsung S21 Ultra Exynos version. I have not been impressed with the camera of the s21 ultra especially indoor pics. A lot of noise in indoor pics. Do you think Mi 11 Ultra has a better camera?
