I'm doing some initial research regarding buying a new phone. One of the things I've heard about all of the 4G Android phones is that 4G sucks the life out of the battery. However, reading the specs on the phone doesn't seem to indicate that, though I wouldn't expect it to either. Also, I'm really going back and forth as to whether or not I even really need 4G. I ran SpeedTest on a Revolution in a store, so I do know how much faster it is, but I'm not sure I'm willing to sacrifice halfway decent battery life for it.
What has your battery life been like in general? Is it as bad as the Verizon store people warned me? For comparison sake, I'm coming from a Touch Pro 2. It also has the extended life battery, so I realize that has spoiled me.
Also, I read in another thread that 4G can be disabled. I just wanted to be sure about what exactly that meant. Does that mean you can actually force a "downgrade" to 3G only data, or does that mean you can either have 4G data or no data (turn it off)?
Does disabling 4G (assuming it's possible) even help with the battery life?
Thanks in advance for any responses!
4G Greatly Reduced Battery Life!
It is true that 4G Data can suck the life out of your battery. 4G Speed Test have been extremely fast, especially in a 5 bar service area. I'm at the Colorado Springs Airport today and all ten speed tests resulted in speeds above 31 Mbps! The highest was 38 Mbps!
Before 4G came to my area I would get 12-16 hours of battery. Afterwards my phone gets 6-8 hours of battery life. I recently got the extended battery and am getting 14-16 hours of battery life.
You can choose 3G mode or 4G mode in settings. Your phone will reboot after changing the mode.
LG REVO, Stock non-rooted.
OMG those speeds are insane!!! When I said I knew how much faster it was, I apparently didn't! I was getting 6 mbps download speeds and I thought THAT was good! Wow, this does change things.
And on top of that, I just learned that the two existing dual core handsets are not yet rootable, and the devs have been running into issues in doing so.
I'm wondering if it's better to go with one of the 3 existing phones, overclock, and be done with it...
Thanks for the info!

If you are not in a 4g area, you can disable the settings, to cdma only. 4g is insane, and with some mods by developers here, its even slicker. I don't know anything about the other 4g phones offered, The Charge, and the Thunderbolt. But I know, LG was unlocked in 2 days, rooted in 5 and with in 2 weeks we had a rom. It's been getting better and better since. I told my friends when their contract came up to get the LG, but they thought the slide out qwerty Moto 3 would be better. Well, he has been having issues with his. She is happy, but that's cuz I slapped a better launcher on there. It's not as slick and fast as my phone, it's not as user friendly, it's a bit heavier, bulkier than mine.
I may be a bit biased, but I love my phone, and I love what has been done to improve it. And I know, there is more to come.
I am in a 4G area, so considering data plans cost the same regardless of what speed you're getting it at, I'm now leaning towards 4G to be able to take advantage of it.
Besides, if I can disable 4G, or go with the bigger battery, it sounds like the battery concerns all go away anyway.
My only original remaining concern was the dual core processor. However, I've been wavering on that topic now as well. I played with the X2 and all three 1GHz phones in the Verizon store. Granted the dual core phone was faster, but only slightly. Even the Quadrant benchmarks weren't that far apart. And, the Revolution's benchmark was the best out of all three 4G phones.
Plus, given the non-root status of the X2 and D3, I assume the Bionic (my original front-runner) won't be rootable, and $100 more expensive.
I just don't know if it will be worth it.
Don't forget Bing!
I personally like my REVO but it would be much better if Bing Search was not default. It would also be nice if the Car Home App didn't use Bing Maps and VZ Navigator as default. The only thing I haven't been able to make work the way I want it by installing other apps is the capacitive search button. If you are going to root then I'm pretty sure you could uninstall or freeze Bing Search and could set Google Search to open when the search button is pressed.
Also, at this time with the latest OTA, I don't believe the current rooting methods work.

With the Revolt Rom, you get root, you get alot of the updates, and a faster overall performance. Check it out in the development area. There are a couple snags and snaffoos, but Mtmichaelson is working diligently to fix them, or help people fix them. I have seen a couple fc's but nothing major.
If you get an extended battery you can easily get over twelve hours of use while leaving it on 4g and leaving the auto sync on

can anyone who had used this model and the standard int model tell me if there is much difference in the day to day and poweruser performance of both models.
I have the I9300 and somene wants to trade his 19305 for my second phone, the iphone 4s, although if there isn't much difference (I'm not bothered about lte) if prefer to make a similar trade for a nexus (or perhaps a Lumia).
any info would be welcome cheers
I have owned both and don't really notice a performance difference. LTE is amazing and really fast, so that's a network performance gain i guess. there is twice the RAM which is nice for multitasking, but you don't get any actual performance gains from it
ah that's good then... Turns out the phone was still a. I9300 even though it was from "Orange and EE" :s lol I'm glad I checked up.
4g must be blazing, I'm sure I'll love it on my next generation of phone. I can still live on 3g so I won't upgrade until I'm getting a huge jump

How would you compare battery life between the two?
if you disable 4G, then it's comparable. With CPU and GPU undervolting i get about 40 hours 100% -> 1%, and almost 4h30m screen on time. that's with wifi on all the time (and probably connected 70% of the time), a bunch of push and pull accounts, no games
i didnt notice too much of a difference.i did notice a note worthy one in multitasking and what not. for instance when im at home in the evening updating roms and apks , customization of themes or what ever it held up quite well with little to none hiccups at peak levels.
So.. in february i sold my iPhone 5s and was confused what to go for.. So I picked N4 Exynos as i wanted a good performance etc. Unfortunatelt, I am bit disappointed. I got a screen burn, the phone isn't butter-smooth and battery life is terrible. Still, we have not any AOSP/CM so.. no way surviving. I am thinking on what to replace my note with..i am looking at G4 and M9, Z3+ when it eventually goes available in my country... what do you guys think?
Okay as i dont have my own m9, g4 i can't say how they will behave in long term use.
But I have played with the both phones for some times, and I feel that m9 has much better performance, the camera is too good, and most importantly it is a phone with everything packed in a decent size of 5 inch.
If you prefer bigger(5.5 inch) and better screen the g4 is a better option..and I felt that the g4 battery gives you more time with screen on,though it has a better resolution.
And with the Sony,I personally hate Sony..:banghead:
My z3 became a paperweight as its faulty battery burnt the motherboard, and I couldn't claim warranty because of unlocking the bootloader!

The problem is, I didn't have any HTC in the past, and - as I read forums - I can't understand the procedures to mod it. S-OFF's, CIDs, the hell is that I have had Xperia neo V back in the times, it was branded phone but somehow it had unlocked bootloader with testpoint method, so I was really lucky . Samsung is the easiest phone to mod, I am pretty scared of HTC level of difficultness in terms of modificating. Another thing is Snapdragon 810 which heats up as I heard. The positive is that I hope developers can get most out of it so there will be many custom roms etc

If you want to root, install ROMs etc. then a Nexus 6 would be your best option, and it has great specs

Yes I also heard that snapdragon 810 heats up fast..but I think this doesn't effect much on the device, like almost all the phones of Sony z series have overheating issues, but when I talked and discussed about it on the Sony mobile forum, they said that all phone CPU's got something inside to control heating issues,so nothing much to worry..
I had a HTC one before z3,the S-OFF,S-ON was a little bit confusing then, because I was at very early stage of phone modding...if you have used and modified phones deeply before, you can easily learn them ..they are not that much hard from unlocking bootloader or flashing ROMs in a Samsung device!

+1 ...nexus devices are the easiest to mod and the purest Google/Android devices there are. I still have an original nexus 7 running like a champ (aside from the screen being cracked thanks to one of my kids stepping on it lol) but software-wise you can't kill that thing!

Hmm have you tried installing a custom rom + kernel (+ init.d tweaks)? Mine is perfectly smooth now, with some slight stutters here and there when loading a bunch of apps. There are a lot of performance enhancements to be found here that your could try before switching. Personally I'm using Wanam's BOC5 rom with googy_anas's kernel, with the L Speed 2.2 tweaks (removed the VM and RAM tweaks) + fpsunlocker (but instead of setting it to -60 I have set it to -1). The s6 browser is also a lot smoother than the one that comes preinstalled on the Note 4 so do install that as well (found here). I would also recommend turning off location history and uninstalling chrome as chrome tends to use a lot more battery than the stock browser (also try uninstalling facebook + messenger and use the web-apps instead).

Really don't get it as I normally achieve around 7h of screen on time (using the minimum automatic brightness setting). Of course if I use my Gear VR I won't come anywhere close to that. Have you thought about getting an external charger + extra battery? Really convenient as you never need to charge your phone, and switching batteries only takes about 10 seconds. Samsung External Charger

You can achieve around 7h and when I go to school I can hardly achieve these 4h. The pauses are like 10 min, I usually use LTE, browse internet, read something. Screen is usually set to 50% brightness. The drain is really high. My phone can eat 10% per these 10 minutes.

Have you tried resetting the phone? You've most likely got an app that is not playing ball and using a lot of juice. Try resetting your phone, and using it without any extra apps and see if that helps, and then start installing them one by one.
I'm sadisfied with my Note4. But if samsung drop microsd og swapable battery, Ill go for nexus 6.

I have maximally tweaked my phone now. Installed SweetROM, applied L-Speed init.d modifications, installed googymax kernel. Maybe it's a bit better, can't really tell. One thing that annoys me, whenever I connect to WiFi/LTE, FB Messenger says "Waiting for network". I have to go into settings>force close and re-run to fix this. Any ideas?
ATM i'm considering Nexus 6/LG G4, or wait for Xperia z3+
I still have my somewhat-defunct HTC One M7, and am looking to upgrade to finally end my woes. I really, really don't want to get a new phone, but this thing is on its last legs and pretty soon I'm not gonna have much of a choice. The HTC One M9 and the Galaxy S6 Edge are the two phones I'm deciding between.
I'm pretty much set on the S6 Edge as far as products go, but I still have questions about performance, namely RAM management and multitasking capability. I've heard lots of uproar about the S6's rather aggressive task killing habits and wanted to know: is this still an issue? Did it get fixed in a software update, or is the phone still unable to keep background apps running properly? How well does it handle multitasking in general? I know that the S6 is essentially the best phone you can buy at the moment, but if it struggles with RAM management as badly as people say it does, then I'm going with the M9.

I think it has been overblown a ton, but it definitely exists as a problem. Thing is that the phone is fast enough where it doesn't really pose a huge issue and we also have the 5.1.1 update coming soon which should fix at least some of the problem. Honestly the M9 has enough performance issues of its own with overheating and throttling - pick the phone you like more!
i currently own an S21 Ultra Exynos 2100 barly can reach 535k in antutu and poor score on pc mark and others and overall performance even if you freeze the phone and tried factory reset and it tried it all ... even battery life seems weak video play back barly six hours whatsapp calls drain it like its furmark on pc something is messed up with my unit and i dont wanna go through warranty here cuz ill be without a phone for several months and new ones will be out and in the end they will say its not covered so should i just pay difference import snapdragon 888 sell my unit and upgrade considering camera upgrades ai score upgrades etc and all other benefits to gpu boost ?
thoughts ?
live in middle Beirut warranty is just a word nothing is guaranteed everyone will try to rip you off basically
hope this isn't repeated but feel its a unique case considering the conditions and geolocation

If you can return it do it and get 888, if you can't return it's not worth to sell and lose more money just to get another version, the phone is already too expensive
Probably not as much the cpu as crap running in the background robbing battery life.
This is true on the Snapdragon variants as well.
Android Q sucks due scope storage robbing cpu cycles/battery and more restrictions on 3rd party apps making diagnostics harder than with Pie.
My AT&T Note 10+ was a battery hog until I toned it down. It was time consuming to do but today it runs very well.
If I had to replace it today I go with another 10+ running on Pie. A vote of no confidence in Q/11 as well as Samsung's lack of newer/substantially better flagship phones.
2 dropped balls don't win any prizes only scorn...
