I want to automate my settings for location method, so that it will only go into high accuracy mode whenever I open up navigation apps. Normally I would do this with Tasker, but I'm pretty sure I need root in order to use this feature. Is there any way to accomplish this without root?
Not that i know of. Tasker/secure settings app is the only thing i've found to work
Actually i want to know about your actual location. I think navigation apps required actual location with you.

I recently decided to root my droid turbo since it seems like we are never going to get the lollipop update ?. Im already seeing improvements in battery life and performance by using various apps like clean master and battery doctor.
I was wondering if anyone knew of any apps that would know when I'm using a certain app and toggle certain setting when I am and off when I'm not. For example, if I pull up the maps app, I obviously need location on so as soon as I open it, it turns location on, and then when I'm done with the all, turns it back off.
Ive seen the "tasker" app on the Google play store that's like 2.99 and I didn't know if it would do that or not.
Thanks in advance!!
IIRC, Tasker does this. I think Llama (similar to Tasker) can also do it.

Yes, Tasker does this with the addition of Secure Settings. You can set it so that whenever you open apps X, Y, Z, it will automatically toggle GPS.
I have this set up for Maps, Yelp, etc. When I exit the app, GPS is turned off after a 2 minute delay (it kept disabling GPS if I quickly switched to another app during navigation, so I set a longer delay than most tutorials suggested)

Thanks, I decided to buy tasker right after I posted that. Was gonna wait till I knew for sure that it would work but decided I wanted to try it anyway. Took me a little bit to figure it out but finally did.
I'm trying to figure out now how to use the scenes to make a pop up menu that will be there during navigation to allow me to start playing music and different navigation tasks so I can stay on the navigation app. I'm having a lot of trouble with it.
So I just discovered the magical world of tasker, and am loving it! Totally worth the money, and one of the best apps to have (the best if you know how to maximise its use)! I have been experimenting a bit with it, so I don't have many profiles. I'm sure many folks here will be using tasker and would be having some great profiles, so I'm looking forward to hearing some suggestions! The profiles I use are:
1. WiFi off at night, from 00:45 to 08:00, except WhatsApp, Play Store, Quora
2. Airplane mode at night, from 00:30 to 07:00
3. Use of interactive CPU governor when using Real Racing 3, and revert to lionfish governor after exiting app(Kernel adiutor profiles do this for me). I also added a condition to use auto-rotate when playing the game, and revert to portrait orientation after closing the app.
4. Auto-sync every two hours, from 08:00 to 20:00 (I would like to improve this to auto-sync only Gmail, would welcome suggestions on how to do this from any tasker experts out here )
I would love to implement more profiles and automate my phone, so looking for ideas.
Need a tasker profile which can disable my mobile data only for some specific apps.it means If I start those apps then my mobile data would automatically disabled and when I close them Data service should be enbled. If u can help on this then That wud be very helpfull
Nothing very fancy for me - right now just have it turning on my wifi hotspot when it detects my car's bluetooth connection so my stereo can use the internet.
It sounds like you are taking it pretty far, @varunadi. You should check out https://www.reddit.com/r/tasker for more cool ideas.

I'm still finding my way around tasker, reading a lot of tutorials so once I figure it out I'll let you know.

I don't know if you can disable mobile data entirely (not just background which Android can do already) for just certain apps.
Perhaps it would be easier to use something like Netguard.
I've never used it but the description says "Applications can individually be allowed or denied access to your Wi-Fi and/or mobile connection."

Can't the secure settings plugin be used for that purpose? Toggle data on/off I mean.

I was actually going to suggest that as I have it installed already but when I tried it didn't work.
The "Mobile data" toggle was unavailable because it claims I don't have root. However, I'm definitely rooted and there's no listing (saying denied or otherwise) in SuperSU for Secure Settings so it didn't even ask for root. I'm not too surprised as SS hasn't been updated in over a year and a lot of the Play Store comments mention mobile data toggle specifically not working either (among other things). Too bad as it was pretty powerful and of course I think I paid for it right after its last update.
Not getting SS working for me might just be my problem and perhaps someone else can get it going.
I was also going to suggest [APP][2.2+][ROOT] Toggle Data 5.0 (xda-exclusive free version) but then I read more about what @anks095 said which was "can disable my mobile data only for some specific apps" so I'm guessing he just wants certain apps restricted and not all (although the next sentence seems to say otherwise but I might be reading it incorrectly). I'm not too sure that can be done via Tasker/SS - my guess is that it's an "all-or-nothing" kinda thing for mobile data so the VPN thing might be the only way.
I use a similiar app called automagic but some of the things that I got my tasker like program to do are: lockscreen enable/disable through wi-fi at trusted places (don't like geofencing due to battery), when connected to the bluetooth of my car. Auto silent 5 min before a meeting, but if not connected to my smartwatch then vibrate. And lastly sms emergency location request where my family can send a keyword and my phone will automatically send location.

How is the lockscreen one working for you? I find the built-in SmartLock to be really unreliable but when I tried to do lockscreen stuff before (last year) there was some bug in either Tasker or Secure Settings that would sometimes keep your screen black with just the nav buttons visible present. I'll have to re-try now.
That sms emergency request thing sounds cool! Can the recipient open the location in Maps to see exactly where you are?
Without issues I set it so that it clears the password. Makes it so that I have to swipe to unlock. As for the location, yes it sends coordinates and the user in the other end taps it to bring up Google maps.

Thank you very much - clearing the password was the key! I had been trying before to disable the keyguard entirely so I wouldn't even have to swipe but that's where the problem/bug came in. Thinking about it that makes more sense to have at least a swipe because I'd end up calling people from my pocket by mistake. So thanks again!
Tasker...hmmm. Bought it, but much to complicated for me. Macrodroid is much easier to understand and can also do complicated automation with a normal user friendly interface. I tried to like Tasker, but the more and more I tried the more stupid I felt.
Hello! I'd like your advice on the best way to accomplish the following:
Toggle GPS on "full" when not connected to WiFi and when plugged in
Toggle GPS to "power saving" when WiFi connects (or, ideally, when location remains static for >5 min, but that's neither here nor there)
My android version is 6.01, and my device is rooted, but it is a systemless root, which I gather is why I can't enable any of the root options in Tasker (or its associated plugins). I'd like to keep my root "systemless" if at all possible, so as not to disable Samsung Pay, but if that's not realistic, please let me know.
I am fairly computer savvy, and have been modding phones for 15+ years, but I got "out of the game" several years ago when family life took over. I'm fairly comfortable using Tasker, but have no experience using any of the root options on it, as this is my first time on the merry-go-round with a rooted device. That all being said, throw all your best options at me, but if it's a complicated option please give me a few extra points in the right direction. Thanks!
Appreciate the help!!

You'll use settings put secure location_providers_allowed.
Is it possible to turn off GPS using tasker without other plugin?
On a rooted phone, it may be possible to change GPS using "Run Shell" action with the "Use Root" option, similar to what taisto commented.
http://www.notenoughtech.com/tasker/tasker-run-shell-commands/
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/...allowed-using-adb-shell-settings-put/37819652
I think it's also possible to do that sort of thing without root using the following link, although adb on a computer is needed. It looks like there are comments here about "secure location_mode" also being used to change GPS, but that doesn't seem to show up on my phone.
https://www.reddit.com/r/tasker/comments/4zsi0e/project_share_toggle_settings_eg_location_mobile/
I just use the Secure Settings app. AutoTools Secure Settings is another app option, which is apparently based around the prior link.
https://www.reddit.com/r/tasker/comments/506emf/deveasy_mode_toggle_settings_eg_location_mobile/
High accuracy
settings put secure location_providers_allowed +gps
No gps
settings put secure location_providers_allowed -gps
Battery savings
settings put secure location_providers_allowed +network
Make sure you toggle root
So I am currently trying to make a non-root app that sends a text message with the geo position when receiving a password with the app factory. Problem is, that I haven't been able to find any reliable method of activating GPS on non-root devices. I have looked into secure settings, but that one needs root access to change location status. AutoTools secure settings has to be set up from the pc through adb to work proberly and most shell commands need root access as well.
So after all this I have narrowed it down to the possibility of being able to force android to show the GPS dialogue for the app. Is this possible, and if so, how?
I'm running OP2 with Pixel Experience android 8.1

Things have been changed after jelly bean... To enable gps automatically we need root permission.. I use AutomateIt app for the same setup but i needed root to activate gps automatically.

Dang it! I know it's possible with autotools, it's just not optimal for a. User to have to connect their device to the pc, learn about adb and all to get it to work..
I've been using Mock Location (enabled through developer options) to occasionally change my location appearance to apps. What I'd like to be able to do is to enable it selectively for only certain apps. For example, I want Google Maps to always see my real location, but Facebook and Instagram to always see the same location no matter where I am. That way I can still take advantage of general localisation (by setting it into the middle of the city centre) without it knowing specifically where I am.
So far though I haven't found anything that's able to do this. I've been using Fake GPS but that does it for every app, there's no way to set it to specific ones. I've also tried setting up Secure Folder (no way to do Mock Locations within Secure Folder that I could see), I've tried using Island and Parallel Space but couldn't find any way to do it through that either.
I've also thought about having a Tasker/Automate setup that turns on Fake GPS each time I open one of the apps on the list, but that seems somewhat clumsy and likely to cause issues.
Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas I might have missed? I feel like this should be easy but it doesn't seem to be.
