Anyone still using the TouchPad? If so what roms ? - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was over at the dev deparment and found most rom threads dead, however, I did find one activew. Going to try the CM 11 nightly, I havent updated mine TouchPad in years

I second your question. I still find the TouchPad to be a capable tablet.

Android 5.1.x development is still happening, thanks to our talented developers However Kitkat Roms will give you the most stable and fully functional experience. Jcsullins and Milaqs CM11 builds are both great choices. I'm personally using Sumashs 4.4.4 PAC Man Rom, overclocked with Kernel Adiutor (ROOT) Increasing the default clock speed from 1.2Ghz to either 1.5Ghz or 1.7Ghz will give you a little extra performance boost. Everything you need to know and a list of the Roms is available in my full thread below, happy flashing.
[ROM GUIDE]How to install Android 5.x.x/4.4.x with Jcsullins TPtoolbox Super Easy Way

Thank you!

Evervolv
Even though Flintman is moving onto M which will be dropping next week or so, I gave this 5.1.1 rom a shot and was eternally grateful for his most recent update expanding bluetooth connectivity and the front camera to work. It does not do video as it will lock up, but stills are just fine in either orientation (landscape/portrait)

Nice thanks for the info, I didn't know Flintman had the camera working or decent BT support. Looking forward to seeing Android M on the HP TP:highfive:

I am surprised too! Still using TP few years. Bought it in China for funny 100 USD and it is some prototype with 3G module, Memory eMMC: Samsung 64Gb and LPDDR2: 8GB Samsung.
Using with ev_tenderloin-5.1.1-testing-2015.10.02 and absolutely satisfied.
Waiting for Marshmallow!

I have TPs running CM9, CM12.1 and Evervolv's AOSP Marshmallow 6.0.1.
I've been using CM12.1 (Lollipop 5.1) for about as long as anybody here, and from my experience, it's pretty rock-solid. I've had fewer problems on that than I've had on my CM9 (Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0) TP.
The TP running Evervolv's Marshmallow is still my "testing" tablet. If you don't need Bluetooth or the camera, it could be a daily driver for basic tablet use, but if I were a heavy user of Netflix and Skype (which I'm not), I would probably have a few more concerns about this early Alpha build. That said, this is getting really close. It's probably closer to a finished product than the first releases of Windows 95 were.

Thanks, xda!
Just a quick shout out to jcsullins and Roland Deschain for their collective works. I've successfully updated my old HP TP with Android 4.4.4 (CM11)! I'm not a dev guy, so the TP Toolbox was awesome and easy to use.
Thanks guys!

Evervolv! The last update on their 5.1.1 had a working camera and bluetooth. I'll warn you that the bluetooth is not 'perfect' in that it will pair w/ just about everything, but won't move data necessary, example, doing file transfers won't work, but the audio works w/ no issues.

Thanks. Now I will have to decide whether I need to do Bluetooth file transfers or not.
So I gather JCScullin's(or Milaq's) 4.4.x releases are the only ones that have a fully functioning Bluetooth with Camera. Decisions, decisions.....

You'd be right in saying that. I would say that if you can hold on a little, Flintman has been working really hard on the Marshmallow version of Evervolv w/ working bluetooth, but no camera. The bluetooth stack he's trying to work in will be, in my opinion, even better than the existing HP one.
I'm not sure if he'll be able to get the camera working though, so you may have to stay with lollipop if you really need or want it.

Did some reading. I think I'll go with Evervolv v5.1. You mentioned in an earlier post you had issues with video working on this rom. Has the video been fixed? Would love to do video chats in Hangouts.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get video to work and I think that was in part due to a lack of hardware libraries that are compatible with lollipop and newer. While the convenience of that camera is pretty neat, most feel it's not justified to get it working versus something like Bluetooth. It's really hard from a dev perspective to get that camera working. So kudos to Flintman for even getting it to do still pics.

[Q] CM9 vs. Buttery ICS

I'm currently running CM9 on my HP Touchpad. I was wondering what the difference is between CM9 and Buttery ICS. Are they the same build but different features? Are there things that one has and the other doesn't?
cm9 is based on cyanogen source, buttah is based on evervolve (spelling?).
Go to classicnerd.net, it has the info you're looking for.
buttah is better.....and i am totally biased.... anyways not many devs/members appreciate rom comparison threads...try both yourself and u will find the difference..

OK I know your biased but could you provide any reasons at all?
This early in the ICS development game it is less about A vs B and more about who has what working. These are Alpha builds at different stages of development with different focus on moving forward.
I am personally biased toward Classicnerd myself, but that should not impact your decision. Try them both yourself and you can then make an informed decision on the ROM that works good for you.
i went with butter cause... i like butter!
With this recent news about HP releasing files or whatever, does that mean all the teams will get that stuff or only CM?

I will say that I have had both installed and both look great. Unfortunately no one has made any headway on the wifi issues...
I will say that the nerds have really done a nice job with the graphics. It's just really nice to look at. So if you're going for the "cool" effect. That might be a good choice.

What graphics? As far as I am concerned wifi is iffy and HD video don't work on either so they're both essentialtially equal. But they're very very advanced for an alpha and can't wait for the next release.

I was talking specifically about the "eye candy". The wifi has been a train wreck for me thus far. I'm not sure how there are so many that aren't having issues.
The only way I can get the thing to stay connected for any length of time is to run a wide open AP or public wifi spots. WEP, WPA2 and WPA2 Enterprise are worthless.
But I do agree, for an alpha, it is very nice to run. I just wish I could USE the things that I need to make it actually useful for me...
No offense to anyone here. But I have CyanogenMod 9 Alpha 0.6 installed on my TouchPad and I have not had ANY problems with my WiFi staying connected. I used to have CyanogenMod 7 Alpha 3.5 and I had issues with my WiFi then but I have not had one issue with my WiFi staying connected to my internet at all. Every morning and every time I "wake up" my TouchPad my Wifi is on and ready to use. I LOVE CyanogenMod 9 Alpha 0.6 as does my Mom who also has it on her TouchPad!
P.S. Make sure in your WiFi settings you go to the Advanced feature and that you select that your WiFi is set to NEVER sleep.
I may be wrong but I think that the wifi is a hardware issue. I have used both Roms and have never had an issue with wifi. It could be the routers used since there are so many different ones being used or the wifi chip inside the TP. These are the only things that are not constant for everyone.
Just my opinion.

I can't agree. The wifi works great in WebOS. Nothing but issues in cm9 and 7 and through the variety of kangs and the varying suggestions on how to try to fix it.

[Q] Choice of ROM (stable, cam)

Hello,
I am running 9-20121118-NIGHTLY-tenderloin on my TP and am very satisfied with the stability of this ROM! (Camera not working)
I now bought a second TP which is supposed for my girlfriend's dad.
I am now looking for a ROM which is as stable as mine but has the camera fixed. I think CM10 is still too unstable/experimental, right?
Which CM9-ROM would you chose?
with kind regards
cosy
The camera fixes went into CM9 a week or so before Xmas and so your best bet would be the latest CM9 nightly.

Because the tablet was made for webos. That's why the battery works/lasts much longer in webOs. It's a great operating system (better than android and apple), but the lack of apps, among other things (HP's handling of it), make android so attractive. We have the best of both worlds. The only good dual booting tablet.......... :good:, as far as I know.
Jelly Bean all the way.
:good::good:
I went from CM7 to the flavours of Classic Nerd over the past year+. None of them come close to jcsullins + dorregaray, (cm-10-20121216-EXPERIMENTAL-tenderloin-FOR_LIMITED_TESTING_ONLY_CAM with moboot 0.38, cm10-jcsullins-camera-config1and today cm10-gyroscope).
I have not had a single FC. Skype with video works. The camera works, Overclocking likewise.I now have it running on three machines in my family. Look at the number of posters to each of the dev streams and you will get an idea where the money is. I cannot understand why they keep calling it a pre-alpha. Seems to be ready for prime time and then some.
Adobe Flash may also work.

Welcome to the TouchPad community, jerryatherton. I've been messing with TouchPads for a couple years now, but I'm pretty new to XDA...
Anyways, to answer your question, both Schizoid 2 and Evervolv claim to support the camera and microphone. I'm assuming that's all you'll need for Hangouts. However, neither ROM supports Bluetooth, so you'll have to make that sacrifice. I haven't tried either myself, but the people who have seem to rate both rather highly. Head here to check them out.
Also, this thread discusses a patch for the microphone in CM10.
Good luck!

CM9, CM10, CM11... which one to choose?

Currently running CM9 on my Touchpad. Use it for web browsing, few games, mostly apps, and occasionally BT w/ my HP keyboard. Not sure if I should upgrade to KitKat (CM11) or go with CM10.1/2, or just stick with what I have. Any suggestions and breakdowns of what each version is best for, in regards to what I use mine for and stability/performance are welcome.
Also, if anyone has any battery information, that would be great. I know CM9 is alright, but it still drains fairly quickly. Thanks guys.

Use to CM10 for now. I've been using CM11 for a while now and it is really hitting a rough patch to the point it is nearly unusable. CM10 is pretty mature and you will like it much more that CP9.

Don't agree with that. Using Flintmans nondata cm11 and its fully usable IMO. No freezes, keboard bt works. I liked the straight update with this nondata rom, nothing to change except system partition size from 300 to 600MB.
If you want cam to work, go for 10.2 though, Milaqs rom seems nice.
i like the non-data media roms since I want to maximize the space I can access on both webos and android easily.
I use JCSullins 4.2.2. Battery drain is great, doesn't even lose 1% in like 5 hours sleeping. Not a data media build which is good as I think they're pointless.
I am using CM10. I used CM11 for a few day and went back. My kiddo uses it for netflix and dish anywhere, so it needed to be a little more stable.

Also, in general, which builds tend to be fastest? CM10 or CM11? Or does it matters more about the kernal?

Everything is subjective, you really have to try them yourself to see what works for you and read the comments in the individual thread's to help you make a decision.
But you should have loads of fun trying them.
All the best.
I also use JCSullines 4.2.2.
It is CM10.1 on Kernel 2.6. I believe it is an early January 2014 build ( you can find it by searching for Tenderloin Jellybean with Bluetooth support)
To answer the OP question, each build has advantages.
CM7 was bay FAR the most responsive, and was always able to play local amd streaming content flawlessly.
CM9 provided android 4.0 and the UI enhancements. However it had lip sync issues on local video content. It did however allow very easy updates through "OTA like updates" in the system settimgs options
CM10 -- unknown, didnt try it.
CM10.1 (k2.6)-- basically is CM9 fixed... Mostly. It plays videos well and less battery draim (gone are the days of zero batter without waening and the fear it may be bricked). The issue is that it gets slow with time, perhaps hours or a day.. But youll need to reboot before to long. Videos can lag pretty bad, particularly streaming HD content.
CM10.1 (k3.4) -- unkown, but hopeful. Faster responce, low battery drain, yet possible issues with BT amd or audio/HD videos

Will be moving to CM11 for 4.4.2 support. Had CM10 for a while and loved it, but need 4.4.2 for Xfinity TV support. Can't wait...
Echoing what others have said, I use Milaq's 4.3 rom (cm10.2), which works well for me: stable, relatively low battery drain, BT, camera. It even supports OTG which I use with my DSLR. Great rom. I am planning on experimenting with jc's 4.4.2 on another TP.

I've been using JCSullins 10.1 for a while and just went to his 11. So far the only downside is the current version of Netflix doesn't work correctly. Both bluetooth and camera seem to work correctly though which, if I recall, is a plus over CM9.
I've been using CM9 since i bought this tablet. But its starting to become very unresponsive, there is noticeable lag, it often freezes, so i have to reboot or wait for a really long time and it's very slow for everyday use like browsing etc..
I just updated to latest version of CM9 (only wipe cache and dalvik). What may be the cause of this, since I know that CM9 was much faster when i first installed it and how can i make it responsive again?
might be just the case that you've been installing too many apps
i'm on the last cm9 nightly, and everything works (audio, video/decoding, bluetooth, camera, wifi etc), and everything is as fast as I remember it
additionally, i've flashed the modified kernel that you can overclock the cpu/gpu, so games and whatnot are faster
i've only installed things i actually use, have greenified to hibernate everything when not in use, and go to deep sleep mode after 1 min of screen off
anyways, i sorta want to upgrade to cm11, just because it's newer, is there a version that has everything working and stable except the camera, that's the one thing i never use (i also very rarely use the bluetooth, but i like syncing the ps3 controller to play games)
I'm gong with cm11
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
I was on CM9 for a long time and quite happy but decided to make the jump to CM11/4.4.2 and have zero regrets.
The updated look and feel is well worth it, the interface and UI is super responsive and much quicker than CM9. This may be due in part to having to do a full uninstall of CM. Battery life is great.
I am on 20140409-SNAPSHOT-jcsullins which is a data media build and frankly was not hard to setup. AcmeInstaller takes care of everything and the only real additional step was resizing the partitions which was super easy with the .zips, I highly recommend mpgrimm2's guide and if you can find it Roland Deschain's guide. Give it a couple of reads and it's really not hard.
Netflix won't work out of the box but again, the fix is super easy, use method #2 from this thread and enjoy, just one .zip to flash and just make sure you are on Netflix 3.2.1 and do not have autoupdate on.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2405995
I highly recommend spending about 15 minutes to read through the setup guides, then another 20-30 minutes to go through the uninstall and fresh install of CM11. You will not regret it.
I was using CM9 for a while and recently went to CM11. While others are sharing great success and how great things are running, I haven't been too happy with it. Apps that would normally run are now lagging like no other. Waking up from sleep seems to be an issue. Random reboots. I also still can't access the sounds setting without settings FCing on me. Eh, best of luck to whatever you choose! :good:

Latest Touchpad ROM working perfectly with SKYPE?

I would like to put the latest or best working ROM that works with Skype on a Touchpad. It's for my Dad to talk to his grandchildren and he does not have a clue when it comes to these things. It will pretty much only be used for Skype so it needs to rock solid in this regard.
My understanding and experience is that the lollipop and MM ROM can have camera issues so this might rule them out, can somebody confirm or poo-poo my notion on this.

Honestly the HP TouchPad is not the best device to be using with skype, due to the poor quality camera and microphone. Even your title asking for a rom that works "..perfectly with SKYPE?" would be a bit of a stretch. I'd recommend Milaq's Kitkat build for family members. However I'd test skype out in a well lit room on the HP TP before giving it to him, if its not working well enough you might want to invest in a newer device.
