Screen always on - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I just picked up a Lumia 928 for a low price, and I love it. The one thing that bothers me is when I have it charging in my car dock and day I have Pandora playing, the screen shuts off. Is there any way to have the screen not shut off, am I missing something simple?
Thanks

Overheating issues?

I just (10 min ago) went to check the time on my phone, and when I grabbed it, it was extremely hot. When I turned it over (I put it face down at night so the notification led doesn't bug me) it was showing the battery charging screen except it was a question mark. The phone was plugged in since 10 pm (its 5 am now) and when it had cooled down enough I turned it back on and it said I only had 50%, even though it had been charging all night. Has anyone else had similar overheating issues, and should I return it for a new phone?

Tried a hard reset? If ao, return the phone is what I would do. No way its supposed to drain that quick or heat up. Charging, navigating and playing music over BT and my phone is warm, not hot.
Had a similar issue about 3 weeks ago. Wasn't plugged in charging though. It was just sitting in my pocket. I thought it felt warm against my leg so I pulled it out and the phone was super hot! Turned the phone off immediately, let it cool down, and it hasn't done it since.

The other day I was charging (stock moto AC charger) my battery (40%) and downloading stuff via 4g and mine got to 46 degrees C. I slid open the keyboard and put it in a opening of a vent that was blowing 60 degree F air. 1 hr latter battery was 80% +/- and i dl'd more stuff.

You said there was a battery with a question mark. Was your phone booted up at this point, or were you in the 'battery charging mode'?
Sounds like the phone overheated, which can sometimes happen. You could try to get a replacement, but unless it happens consistently they might give you trouble trying to return it.
The annoying thing is, they say our batteries aren't supposed to be removed. It was nice being able to swap in a spare when my wife was done with her A855 moto Droid and same with having a "spare" incredible...
Anyone know the reason they made ours not come out?

It is my understanding that they used a special type of battery to get it so thin. The downside to this special type of battery is that they are easily bendable, but explode when bent
As a result, they don't want anybody touching the battery and exploding themselves.
Somebody who is more knowledgeable in battery tech could probably give a better explanation.
Couple weeks ago I was using the GPS and had the phone on the Motorola cardock while plugged in (with a Verizon charger) to the car. Took the phone off to make a call and I literally couldn't touch it. I kept it on the side and opened the battery doctor app, told me the battery was 58C. Immediately pulled aside and turned off my phone. Stupid phone has the locked battery door also so I couldn't pull it off to let the battery cool faster. Worst battery door design by Motorola.

Watch out for overheating!

I was finally able to put my Nexus 4 down for a full charge last night (couldn't stop playing with it ) and set an alarm as usual. What I also did as usual was set the timeout to never and placed it next to me on the bed. After waking up a few hours late (6:15 alarm woke up at 7:30), I was surprised to see that the phone was very hot and the black screen of the Alarm was now turning a flickering white (like the display had been pressed against). I immediately turned off the phone and let it cool down (going so far as to pop it in the freezer for a few seconds).
As of now, it doesn't have that whitish faded look anymore on black as much, but the screen is still flickering. Not sure what went wrong, hopefully it will recover soon. If I pump the brightness to 100%, the horrible screen flicker returns and is present at lower brightness levels as well.
I've reached out to Google Play Support now, as the device now constantly flickers on increased brightness. It's strange that this issue occurred because besides the alarm running for an hour, DayDreams on Android 4.2 allow for the continuous powering of the screen when charging or docked, which would lead to this issue supposedly. My unit had a creaking in the microUSB port when I received it, something not present in my friend's unit.
UPDATE: It's improving at a rapid pace, though not fully recovered yet. I think it will be fine, though I would still like for Google to figure out the MicroUSB port weirdness. I just need to buy a daughterboard and I'll fix it myself Google!
after my first night with my nexus it kinda did something similar .. i had it charging next to me off my laptop and i woke up with the phone just off with the white battery showing it's charging i guess but my laptop was fully charged and my nexus was still at like 16% . . no clue what happened in the middle of the night lol
So you had it charging plus the screen was left on for a few hours and you're surprised it's hot?

I haven't had any issues. It's charging perfectly fine for me, from USB and Wall charger.

No, it's not that it is just hot, if I pump up the brightness to 100% now the phone has a crazy flickering effect and looks terrible. Also, when I received the phone, the MicroUSB jack on in was a bit flaky (as in it would jiggle and make creaking sounds). It's a shame because that's the only fault, as my phone has no problems with rattling or the fit and finish of the glass :fingers-crossed:

That should not be a problem. My GNex does this every night, sitting in the docking station.
You set screen timeout to never?? Why?

just place it in some ice water. Always works.

Sorry but IMHO you kinda ask for something like that.
Why would you let the screen on, for charging, while you're asleep? There would be nicer / cheeper ways to have a night light.
Did you have the phone on the mattress, a heat storing surface?

No, I didn't leave the screen on overnight (although you can do this, DayDreams supports keeping the screen on when docked or charging). It was only on for about an hour or so, albeit it was ringing. LOL at the nightlight

With charging and the screen on the phone shouldn't get hot at all, of course it's a different story when the CPU is stressed at the same time, but that didn't seem to be the case.
Edit: Now I understand:
My guess is that the Alarm went off and crashed, which caused the CPU to run at full speed for more then one hour.

I'm hoping that you didn't pop it straight into the freezer, because that's exactly how glass cracks and breaks!

No worries, I took Chemistry
Though Gorilla Glass really should be tempering their glass if it's to go on electronics, especially some of the newer laptops.
I have been getting random occasions when my phone really heats up for no reason. I mean its not when I'm doing anything on it or its charging. It happened today and got so hot that it was really noticeable. I ended up turning it of and leaving it for a few mins then restarting. Been fine today since.

Whenever the alarm is going off without a timeout, especially if it's vibrating, the phone will overheat no matter what. This has been my experience with every single android phone I've owned, I generally don't use them for my wake-up alarms for that very reason. I've had my sensation overheat so bad before from that very cause and it put a bright spot right in the middle of the screen where the CPU is. Luckily T-Mobile is the easiest provider to get a replacement out of

I always turn off vibration on alarm, and my previous phones have never overheated unless there was something else eating up the processor. I'm guessing the new 4.2 Clock and Alarm may be the culprit, as it flashes the ring every second on alarm.

My One heating up while using car dock

So am rocking my One and really enjoying everybit of it. I got my official car dock and set it up, but 20 mins into connecting my One, it becomes really hot am scared it will explode. I even repositioned the dock inline with my airconditioner vent but it still heats, when I use the device without the dock all is well with my BT hands-free. Has anyone experience this or is it just my device?

probably the car charger outputs more power than what is needed causing overheating i would try with another car to see if that happens again

I just got my HTC D160 Car Dock yesterday and a similar issue. First off, I was running ARHD 7.3 and Bulletproof 1.7 kernel at the time. I drive a Ford Fusion and am plugging into the same AC port that I used with my HOX. I just wanted to set the stage. Anyway while having the phone docked in car mode I was running TomTom. From time to time I was switching over to a messaging program to send a few messages. After about a half hour I noticed my LED light was flashing red. I continued using my GPS app but stopped messaging. Soon the light went back to a solid charging red light. When I removed my phone it wasn't hot to the touch but I'll keep an eye on it though. At this point I'm not really worried plus I shouldn't be messaging while sitting at a light with my phone in dock anyway :silly:

[Q] Charge indicator? Group texting?

I apologize but the search function here on XDA seems to be down at the moment?
I'm curious if the X has a charge indicator, that would let you know it's charging, and if it's been fully charged....without having to touch the phone?
Also, does the stock texting app on the Moto X support group texting?
Thanks!

group texting yes. don't know about charge things but I know i saw some option about active notifications turn off between 11pm to 6am.
Seems to me like a charging indicator light is grossly missing.

Cool, it's just that a couple nights ago, I went to plug in my HTC One and when I did, I didn't get the indicator. So, I discovered that the charger had become partially unplugged from the wall. If that had been my new Moto X, I would have never known and consequently not been charged when I woke up.
Come on Moto, gimme a little light for cryin' out loud.

If I am correct, doesn't moto x have daydream since it is android 4.2.2? You could just set it to daydream when charging that way you know when it is or isn't.

Yea, the screen turns on for about 10 seconds... Though, I concede that if the charger gets unplugged after the fact and you aren't there to see it, you wouldn't know... But I honestly disliked the led, ended up always flipping my phone on their face because the led bugged me.

Sans LED
Excellent points, everyone. Thank you for responding.
This is my first day with the phone and I find it so much easier to use, and better sounding than the HTC One.
Again though, regarding the LED, I think I'm going to miss checking my phone at a glace for notifications. I know it "breathes", but not as frequently as an LED flash. For example, let's say I leave the room and my phone on my desk. When I get back, I would like to just glace at the phone to see if anything has happened. Without the LED, I have to nudge the phone to get it to show me, correct? If so, that's not exactly "touchless", is it?
My old Motorola XPRT had the trusty ol' multicolor LED. I could tell if it was a facebook message or an email.
Am I the only one who feels this way? Maybe this needs to be it's own thread topic?
Thanks!
As for a charging indicator, there is an LED underneath the earpiece. That being said, I've only ever seen of once lol. My phone was completely dead and plugged into a Yamaha stereo USB getting a very weak charge. It has never activated again for me, and in another thread someone said they saw the LED active on a demo unit at an ATT store. I have played around with lightflow but no luck.

Nope, the method moto x uses, for me at least is far superior, informative and intuitive. The intervals in which it breathes with a notification is between 5 and 10 seconds and from a distance is far more noticeable. I love everything about active notifications and do not see myself with another phone, from this day forward, with out it. It is my favorite and most used feature and it has, literally, made my life easier.
I'm an electrical contractor and own my own business... Basically run the business from my phone. I get emails, texts, phone calls etc every 10 minutes from 6am until 6pm, before the moto x, I would probably push my power button a few hundred times a day, now, maybe a few dozen. Between the active notifications and touchless controls, this one device has single handedly changed the entire way I conduct my day to day affairs in a very positive way.
To be overly dramatic, this phone has changed my life =P
Seriously though, this is the first phone who's features actually make a noticeable, if not monumental, difference in day to day operation. I use to be a Samsung fanboy, but screw Samsung, Motorola/Google knows what's up.

After some quick camera work i got a pic of it. It comes on really qickly when the battery is completely dead (at least thats how i got it to appear) and it doesn't stay on very long at all. The first time i saw it however, it did stay lit up while the phone was charging. OEM USB cable was used, just a run of the mill usb wall plug and it pops on for a quick second

Different strokes I guess. It's plenty enough for me.
That LED only shows up when you plug in a totally drained phone. (Less then 0%)
The phone does not have enough to power up the screen to show the battery image, so the led comes on until the battery has recovered enough, and disappears.

Red light of 'death'

Something that I read about happening on Nexus 4's but I never experienced... I got it on my N5 tonight though.
It's not a big deal, I was playing a game while charging the phone through a weedy charger (couldn't keep up with the drain). It seemed to have the effect of stopping the phone shutting down due to low battery. Rather than the proper shutdown it just outright died with a flashing read light.
Leaving it on charge for a bit fixed it, then everything was normal.
Just a PSA.

There were two different issues with the Nexus 4. The first, and the one I think you experienced on your N5, happened when the phone consumed more energy than the one provided by the charger, flashing a red light and shutting down until it received enough charge to power on again. It happened to me the second night: GPS, Waze and music while using a cheap low mA car charger. I switched to a Motorola SPN5400 charger and never had the problem again.
The other, the red light would stay on even after leaving the phone on the travel charger for a whole day. The phone would become completely unresponsive.
