Good day all,
I'm considering importing a Motorola Moto X to the UK and was wondering if anyone could help answer some questions so that I may pick the right model. I haven't been able to find my answers specifically in other posts.
As I understand it, only the Rogers model has the 2600Mhz band (band 7) which will allow the phone to use 4G in the UK.
Unfortunately only the 16Gb model is available which isn't much good to me.
I see however that the 4.4 leak on AT&T Moto X unlocks this band 7, however the recommendations are not to buy an AT&T model.
Is this because the AT&T model is not sim unlockable? Or can i not flash stock google to the AT & T phone?
If this is not the case is it possible to flash the rodgers radio say, to a developer edition 32Gb phone?
In short, is there a way to flash different basebands across the Moto X?
Cheers,
Gordon
If you want band 7 LTE and 32gb I think the only possible option that exists right now is the AT&T model. They are simlocked from factory and will require an unlock code. Most of the time they can be unlocked but there are a few cases where no unlock code seemed to work. They cannot be bootloader unlocked which means you can only run AT&T firmware.
They also don't officially support band 7 LTE, but at this time it does appear to be enabled.
The modem files/baseband files can be flashed between the different models however that does not change the basic band support built into the phone. The only model made with band 7 LTE hardware support is the XT-1058.
The Rogers version can be flashed with the retail/dev edition firmware(after the bootloader is unlocked) but it will always only have 16gb of storage, they don't offer a 32gb version(silly Rogers). The Rogers version is also simlocked from factory but unlock codes are 8 dollars or less and are easy to get.
Overall the AT&T firmware isn't that bad, most of the bloat can easily be disabled, as long as they don't remove band 7 support and it is simunlocked you'll be fine, and you can have your 32gb. (and you get a bonus AT&T logo on the back of the phone)
Thanks for your quick response Steve-x.
I see now that the Band 7 radio is a hardware rather than a software feature and that it's specifically an XT1058 I'm after.
I have just one more question in that case and I guess it's aimed at those with knowledge or experience of AT&T...
If I were to get an AT&T phone on leak 4.4 and AT&T were later to release the official 4.4 which blocked band 7 (or even a patch which blocked band 7) would this be pushed to my phone? Or is it the case i can stick to the leaked 4.4 without ever upgrading?
Cheers,
Gordon
Why is that?
What are you really trying to ask? Whether or not the boot loader (or possibly SIM) is locked has nothing to do with available updates
I'm just wondering why the Moto X has not been moved up to 4.4.2 while the Moto G has. I figured if they would move the Moto X up to 4.4.2.
I see the sprint version and the other carrier versions getting the update. Who will update the unlocked version of the Moto X?

I'm actually not sure how the unlocked GSM version gets its updates (I have VZW). I was under the impression it was through your carrier anyway, or by manually flashing after the fastboot files are released. In either case, the updates are starting to roll out, but are not yet available for US carriers
All of the updates come direct from Motorola - for all models of the Moto X and Moto G. The carriers simply "approve" of the firmware and give Motorola the ok to release it. The Dev/retail/tmobile edition (XT1053) which I assume you are referring to as the unlocked version requires no carrier approval but they likely test it with tmobile(and possibly other carriers) before releasing it.
4.4.2 for the US versions of the Moto X will be out very soon, it has been released for Canada and Brazil variations so far.
Ok, thanks for clearing that up.
Soak tests are already in play from what I hear, Verizon, T-Mobile, USC. Its comin

From what I read it might be because Moto G shipped with 4.4, so they got 1 update.. whereas we shipped with 4.2 and also got an update to 4.4.. so they started later.. not sure exactly.. but we should have it soon!
Plus there's more to update for the moto x and potentially more labor intensive as well since its a custom chip set essentially with the dual core krait 300 and the low power sensor processors. The moto g does not have the active display or the x8 system... But rather just a standard quad core qcom chip AMD LCD. Who knows how long Motorola was working on 4.4.2 for the g before it came out.

If you have the unlocked gsm from Motorola who will supply you with your update?
Motorola but they are doing the tmo soak test anyway. Its a great build though because you don't get stuck with a carrier logo on the left like some of the other 4.4.2 builds.

After calling Motorola I'm pretty sure we have to wait till the carrier okay's it. When I called Motorola they just sent me the same link I already had for the files, which only had what's current. I was on T-Mobile for about a week and after i changed my SIM back to AT&T my phone said i had an update....don't know why..I downloaded it but forgot i still had twrp instead of stock. It rebooted (after not installing) and when i checked my phone said up to date and still on 4.4...

I just received my update to 4.4.2. Still not sure who the update came from. I have the unlocked gsm version that came with the tmobile sim but I am on at&t.
The update is out for anyone with XT1053 now. You can even grab it here if you are rooted or otherwise unable to get OTA updates.

I know there is a thread about someone using a MAXX for this purpose here - but I wondered if anyone here specifically had experience using a Telcel GSM SIM in Mexico with a Moto X.
Just a little backstory on this... I am going to Cancun in October. I have a Samsung S4 but read that it has issues using data with a GSM sim... so I did some research and, from what I have read, my best option was to get a Moto X because the radio in 4.4.4 fixed a bunch of issues with using a GSM sim and that the Moto X was truly sim unlocked - where the MAXX was locked during a recent update. From a layman's perspective, it is almost impossible to determine what the reality is... but I made the jump anyway.
I actually got Verizon to give me a free upgrade 15 months ahead of schedule when I told them that I would just add a new line and pay the ETF rather than paying full retail for the phone... after explaining to them that I wanted the Moto X because it was sim unlocked. The good news is that they didn't even extend my contract... they just let me buy a new subsidized phone, apparently.
So, now to the question at hand... has anyone had experience doing this? Do I need to do something to make it work properly?
This is probably a really stupid question forgive me. I'm in the market for a new phone. Is the Moto X on the Moto website the Pure edition? The site gives me the option for VZW. Is there a Pure version for VZW?
No. Although I read there was a way to use the pure edition on Verizon network if you switch the sim out with another Verizon phone with the same size sim. This might have been an article about the nexus 6, and I don't have Verizon so I can't confirm. The frequencies might be different.
I have XT1053 (Moto X 2013 Developer Edition GSM) and it is broken. I use it on AT&T and LTE support is important. It was on 4.2.2 and I never upgraded to 4.4 as it seemed all later versions just brought different problems and I never needed any new features. I haven't followed 5.1 too much but if it was any good there would not be threads here about downgrading on its forum, right?
My options are (I need to do something fast because I leave for vacation in Europe at the end of the month and would like to use phone there. I don't want anything larger than 5"):
1) Send it to Motorola and for $100 they will fix it. Probably just replace with refurb. But what version of Android will it come with? Does anyone know?
2) Get 2014 Moto X, but what version? It seems "Pure Edition" (XT1095) didn't support AT& LTE bands out of the box but they were upgraded later and that enabled it. Yet I found posts that AT&T IMEI database apparently doesn't list XT1095 as having these bands and phone doesn't connect to LTE on AT&T. One has to proved IMEI from another phone. My AT&T SIM is now associated with 1053, so maybe I would be OK? Has all this been officially rectified?
Has Lollipop upgrade on 2014 Moto X been as bad as it was on 2013?
3) Get XT1097 (AT&T version of Moto X 2014) - I don't like the fact that it only comes with 16GB of storage. Also, can it be rooted/bootloader/SIM unlocked?
4) Get some other phone and here I just don't know what to consider in 5" size because I haven't been following Android phones recently.
Feedback and answers appreciated.
