Tab S2 display "issue" - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having an odd issue... Anyone with the 9.7 while holding the tab in portrait view on a screen with lots of text or horizontal lines and plenty of scrolling: while scrolling, does anyone else's display seem to scroll sloppy? The right side of mine scrolls faster than the left. Marginally slower, but noticeable. Makes scrolling seem wavy or wobbly or bendy from right to left. If it's just me, I'm going to exchange this one.
I understand about refresh rates n such. I'm going to Bestbuy today to test the floor model.

OK to update: I tested the floor model at a different Bestbuy than the one I purchased mine at and experienced the same "wavy bendy effect" while vertical scrolling in portrait. So, I'm going to assume it's normal and the refresh rate just can't keep up with high resolution and dpi. In case any other S2 owners see this effect.

Have you show this problem to any of you friends or family, can they see your problem, as some people can be more sensitive to screen refresh problems than others, also oled display can have refresh rate problems.
John.

I have. Unfortunately I'm the only one who can see it. Then again I can spot a dead pixel from 10 feet away. :silly:

I had the original Samsung Note 1 phablet and it had an problem with ghosting while scrolling though menu`s ect, the oled pixels take an lot longer to wake up than lcd pixels, so Samsung sent out an firmware update that kept the pixels on at a very low level all the time to increase the refresh rate and fix the problem with the ghosting.
It been an few years since the Note 1, and oled display have advanced since then, but trying to make the oled displays more efficient i hope they have not turned off the pixels completely or low as they can get away with most people cannot see the refresh problem but you can.
I don't know if this is the reason you are having the problem, it could be something else completely.
Have a look in the developer menu in settings, try the use gpu when drawing or whatever it`s called and see if it makes any difference.

I'm thinking they may have turned them back off. The blacks are very black compared to my other devices. Hmm. I have updated to 5.1 to see if that'd resolve it but it didn't. It's not a huge issue, just weird to see but once I get used to it I'll be alright. Hopefully. lol

Motion Blur is what we called it, not ghosting have a look at the link below, it shows motion blur on the S4 see video, I could not see the problem myself (don't have fighter pilot eyes ) , see if it is the same problem you are having or is it something else.

I'm having issue with screen turning pink when using Chrome as browser. It happens only for 10 to 15 seconds. I wonder if that's hardware or adaptive display problem.

Similar. But instead of it being uniform horizontally across the display, it gets "worse" from right to left more than likely because of the resolution and DPI compared to the S4. But same effect.

That I would say is not normal. Is it only Chrome or are there any other apps that exhibit this color change?

The Tab S has the same issue, but it only happens in portrait mode, seems to be ok in landscape. If i flip the tablet 180 in portrait mode it will do it the opposite way, so its not an optical illusion!
It seems like the control chip for the display is suffering some sort of micro lag.

Have you tried the "forced GPU rendering" in the Developer option, I mentioned in post 6.
John.

Nothing solves it, its just the way it is. I gave up bothering about it and forgot about it until this thread . Another reason to stick with 16:10 instead 4:3.

Indeed. Forced GPU rendering changes nothing. That's one of the first things I tried.

Have you tried playing an HEVC H.265 1080p video yet, to see if it stutters like it does on the S1, the S2 is supposed to have hardware decoding, the S1 uses software decoding that kills the battery and stutters.
HEVC H.265 are half the size of normal H.264 video`s for the same quality.
John.

I have a black and white Tab S2 9.7 and both have the same issue. It doesn't look like motion blur, it looks almost like an intentional wavy/wobble animation when scrolling in any app. Which is why I was looking for an option that toggles it. It's very noticeable by anyone who has used it. I pre-ordered it so I didn't get to test it at Bestbuy before hand. I've never seen this scrolling issue on the old Tab S, Nexus 9 or even an IPad Air 2, I've had all three of them. Just when I think I've found a decent android tablet another issue pops up. If there is no fix and this is considered "normal" then I'll be returning them.

I played a heavy HEVC 4096x1720 and it plays the video perfectly on the standard videoplayer, but it stutters when using VLC so I guess the standard videoplayer has a way to hardware-decode this while VLC-player has to use software decoding?

Very nice, hevc hardware decoding is the only thing i am envious of the S2, And 4096x1720 is amazing, unless it`s only really processing the max resolution of the display, and with the stock Samsung player too, does it support AC3 audio though in the stock player.

The name of the file is tos-4096x1720-tiles.mkv, unfortunately the standard player does not support the used audio codec in that container. When I check the file it says 5.1 sound.
VLC does play the audio but as already said the video stutters heavily.

The audio on that hevc video was AC-3 so it look like only the Tab Pro gets AC-3 decoding
And off to the S2 section woosh.

AT&T Tilt with new camera app testing (+)

I've used the new camera app provided by Nadavi (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355587)
There's three videos all were taken with my AT&T Tilt (Dutty's v3 ROM). Please note that videos are in reduced "youtube" quality, they are significantly better quality in the original file. If you want the originals, I'll upload them somewhere.
First is Ballys' fountains at night. Shot on the street around 11pm:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=jqJcmJc8y_s
Second is a video I took walking inside the hotel. The lighting is pretty much correct in this video, it wasn't that dark, but it definitely was dimmer than your usual work/home environment (hopefully, lol):
http://youtube.com/watch?v=jZHh1Yh4zAI
Third is the video I took inside MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. This is one of their night clubs. The environment is actually not as dim as video would suggest, it's was little brighter.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=q3HjDFlACNU
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Theve videos WERE NOT posted to show or prove that AT&T doesn't need proper driver. I whole-heartedly believe that IT ABSOLUTELY MUST have drivers and I will fight alongside the community for their release till the end.
THese videos were made to show that with newest Nadavi's camera app Kaiser can take pretty damn good videos and pictures.
I'd also like to ask a question - if Kaiser can take such high-fps videos when there's a bright object in the center - perhaps we need to look further into the issue of how Kaiser's camera is focusing on dim objects. There was a thread somewhere about that.
Wow, that's not too shabby at all. Was the on-screen view as quick as the recorded video while you were taking it?
fps on the screen was the same as the movie's. Not to say that i dont have extremely low fps sometimes. i can make a movie tomorrow with very low fps.... i'm just tring to get a vetter understanding of this
wow
wish my tytn II can do that
Your TyTn2 can do this. All I have that may be related my camera operation is Dutty's v3 ROM and Nadavi's camera app.
My camera is still slow as hell.. Can you tell us in details what you did to make your tilt camera fast under low light condition. i think we would all be really grateful.

Guys, I didn't do anything. I installed the Nadavi's camera app and changed the settings a little bit. I decreased the brightness to -1.5, reduced sharpness... there's a thread in here somewhere that lists all the good specs for kaiser's camera.
The problem is that I do have the same exact problem you guys are seeing. For example, my office at work is poorly lit - it I point camera at the lamps - i got excellent fps. But when I point down, to say, my table, it reduced to about 2-5 fps. Point at my laptop - again high fps. I will post the video later.
What I'm trying to say is that there's more to this than the drivers, I feel. Why is Kaiser making excellent vids at night with few bright objects, and making horrible video with poorly lit office? As far as I can tell - there's one major difference. In first case we have no-light environment and few bright lights. In second case - whole environment is lit, but pooly, with no objects sticking out. Why is Kaiser trying to compensate in second case, and jsut makes a video in first case?
I will post the low fps video tomorrow..

Thats pretty fast!! I have the app but when I record it drags everything. We should have a benchmark thread on all the big rom releases, and compare them with the app and with out, and on the OEM roms.
Here are the specs. Aside from having 3M resolution, and brightness at -1.5, mine are like his:

Ok here's another video from same configuration. Notice the drastic change in FPS when brightness of the object in center changes. It seems that if u point to something bright then FPS goes up, even if its dark around it.
PS: could u elaborate on how u increase FPS by powering down/up the kaiser?

Wow this trick actually works. To clarify for those that don't understand: When your in Camera or Video Mode click the power button on your phone and let the phone be off(Standby) for a couple seconds; when you turn it back on by pressing the same button the FPS will increase to about 20FPS.
One problem I found out is that it does not adjust the brightness anymore so everything will sometimes look too dark (at least in my room it did)
EDIT: Now I found a thread that clarify's this better than me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=365345
The main problem with the TyTynII camera is NOT to do with any missing drivers.
It IS to do with the fact that HTC opted to have an automatically enabled 'Nightmode' when in low-light conditions. If you enable 'Nightmode' on your normal bog-standard video camera, you will get a low frame rate just the same.
HTC need to give users the option to manually select 'Nightmode' so we can then decide ourselves if we want low-framerate/high-lighting or vise-versa..
maybe in a patch or new ROM???

I completely agree. This is a very valid point. Whilst I agree that HTC misrepresented the graphics ability of this device and should be accountable for this, I am noticing an increasing trend to ascrbie most problems with the TyTN2 to the missing graphics drivers.
The danger of doing this is that investigation into other solutions will just tail off and this will go from being a developers forum to a consumers' one.
After all, if the slow IE scrolling had been written off as driver related, there wouldn't be an excellent cab floating out there that could fix it so easily!

Screen washed out after playing video

Anybody else noticed that the screen is washed out/blown out sometimes after a video plays (mainly Netflix, maybe)? It seems to be a combination of increased brightness and decreased color saturation, making colors seem... well... washed out. It goes away after either shutting the screen off and on or switching to another app. I think. I haven't found the pattern yet.
I'm guessing it's Nvidia's Tegra 3 PRISM tech at play, and it's just not shutting off after the video app is closed. I'll expect a software fix at some point, but just want to see if anyone else is experiencing it.
Well son of a b... that is what is causing my washed out colors and gamma. I noticed it seemed to come and go. Unfortunately it never seems to completely clear up for me, even after going to other apps.
I tested this with the Transformers movie. After playing that a few seconds, I left and noticed the home screen looked really saturated, then went to the browser, and it was the same.
For me going to another app doesn't seem to clear it up, but it does clear up partially after a period of time. And maybe it might be my imagination, but it doesn't seem like it really ever goes back to normal until I reboot the tablet.
next to my work ipad.. the colors seem really blown out. =\ also there seems to be a video stutter / jittery issue during the panning effect. Played it side by side with my S3 and the s3 can render it just fine. What gives?

No, I see it happen with YouTube and Netflix too. I was just trying to make a futile attempt to understand why this happens to some of us and not others. My guess though if you haven't seen it with other videos, the Transformer movie won't do it either.
I've noticed that it's most obvious on some screen elements, but not all. So, it's entirely possible, I think, for someone to be experiencing the effect and simply not noticing it.
I've noticed this as well quite annoying.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
The after movie wash-out appearance was particularly noticeable when looking at small fonts on a white background. Such as this forum.
Yeah same for me! I'm on my 3rd nexus because of dust under the screen, I can't remember my previous 2 doing it. Will it be fixed by an up date doyou think? Or could it be hardware related?

I just started getting the "whiteout" too. Not from anything in particular that I can tell, it happened twice coming out of sleep mode.

>Is it Hardware or Software related?
Take screen cap. If cap image is likewise washed out, it's not hardware. If cap image isn't washed out, then it's more complicated.

I tried it on all the same things you listed. Didn't notice nothing some of you described at all. Screen still looked sharp n crisp. Colors looked fine and not washed out.
Its more than likely the nvidia feature kicking in. Especially if you have brightness set up higher. Probably doing it to save battery life. I keep my brightness at 12% and its more than bright enough for me to see everything well. I heard the autobrightness likes to act up so THST could be am issue also if you have that on also. I never use autobrightness unless I take device outdoors.

Can you give me the quick answer on how to take a screen capture on the N7? Thanks!
Just took several screenshots and swiped between the screen that was normal screenshot and the faded screenshot and they both look the same for me, which is lovely with nice rich colours. If I stick transformers on for 20 sec its washed out when I exit, as soon as I turn the screen on and off its back to normal. I just think its a bug in the screen settings when exiting a move or game. Used to happen on my PC until I updated the driver.

You just hold the volume down button and the bower button, it will take a snapshotof the screen. I've tested it though, see my above post
I'm having the same issue too.
Happens when I watch a video on youtube, netflix or play movies. I use a brightness app to change the brightness levels and it returns to normal. I'm also getting the "screen flickering" issue described here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740385
I really hope these issue with be fixed with an update. I'm new to android. Where's the best place to report these issues direct to Google/Asus?
>between the screen that was normal screenshot and the faded screenshot and they both look the same for me, which is lovely with nice rich colours
So it's probably hardware (display), or a combo of hardware/firmware.
Power-saving feature of Kai's PRISM display pertains to color saturation and brightness. As OP indicated, malfunction may be related to that. But it doesn't matter what the exact cause is.
It may or may not be fixable via firmware update. Suggest getting RMA process started, then sit on it for a few days to see if OTA fix happens. Don't wait beyond the return period. Make sure to ask for advance replacement if RMA.
>I just think its a bug in the screen settings when exiting a move or game.
If the issue was firmware-only, then it would happen to all units, not some. It's either HW, or HW+FW.
Edit: Suggest trying different movie players and different movies to find extent of problem.

So question for the community. If you're having issues with the "whiteout/washout", the ghosting and flickering... would you recommend getting a replacement or waiting for a driver / firmware update?

YouTube keeps switching back to 480 resolution between videos, why?

I've played with the settings in the YouTube app, but can't seem to find the fix for this. On previous devices, once I select a certain resolution for playback, that selection sticks for the rest of the videos I watch (until I back out of YouTube). On the S8, for some strange reason, the playback resolution resets to 480 every time I start a new video. I'm getting tired of tapping the screen, hitting those three dots, selecting quality, and then choosing 1080.
Maybe I just need to wait for an update to the YouTube app, but perhaps there is a setting somewhere that I haven't found? Thank you all.
It's because you opted to do T-Mobile's Binge On. 480P YouTube videos don't count toward your monthly data.

Damn, thank you very much. I'm surprised because, firstly, I don't remember ever turning that back on (I wonder if TMobile turned it on when I got my new device), and secondly I didn't think it was active when on WiFi. I'll switch that setting, restart the device, and hope for the best. Peace.
Still a problem...
Well, it's been over 24 hours since I made sure Binge-On was shut off. I've cleared cache in recovery and the YouTube app has updated since. Unfortunately, videos in YouTube still default to 480 when I'm on WiFi. Anyone else having this problem?
Make sure you don't have limit mobile data usage turned on as well.
But I'm in the same boat - I have turned off my Binge on and Youtube still reverts to 480p between videos
Binge on has been turned off for over a month.

Yeah, Mobile data limiter is switched off within YouTube settings, not that it should effect video quality over WiFi anyhow.
Also, I've cleared YouTube app data and set up everything fresh. All videos on WiFi still default to 480, I have to manually switch for every video. It's quite annoying.
More info...
I switched default screen resolution on my S8 to QHD, and now my YouTube videos all default to 720p over WiFi. This is interesting, and leads me to believe this is an S8 system setting issue. Please let me know if anyone can replicate this, thanks.

Right. Not sure if everyone is having this problem though. I think it's safe to say there are some early bugs that hopefully get squashed with an update soon.
Mine doesn't change back. The only ones that go back to 480P or less are videos that aren't HD or high res. Tried this video kn 1080 P and it plays fine and takes advantage of the full screen capabilities of this phone.

I can get 720 P and above if the video is recorded like that. Don't have any idea why your having issues. Could be an issue with your ISP

Definitely not my ISP. This is device-specific.
The entire Questions and Answers forum is littered with threads about very random bugs that only certain people are having, and are difficult to reproduce. Very strange.

It's weired how some people can have issues with something on a device and other's not have those issues on the same device. The thing us, it's not isolated to Samsung devices. I've seen it on LG, HTC, even Apple. Can even happen with cars, TV's, etc. Who knows why it happens.
Sent from my wickedly kewl Galaxy S8 using my fingers. Duh!!!
And it's random video to video
I just clicked on the WW HD trailer - got 720p
Click on another video that I know is shot in 720p60 and it loads up as 360p
Both on wifi
It's not S8 specific. I have the same problem on my Galaxy Note 5. Let me know if anybody finds a fix. On Cricket Wireless. I use WiFi. Data limit is off. And I have default resolution set to 1080p in YouTube settings.
It still defaults every video to 480. Sometimes mid video then back again.
Internet is fast.
And, after today's update, which addressed a red tint that I never actually saw, the YouTube quality issue persists. I've tested this on three different WiFi networks, all fast. The problem still persists.

My videos stay at the selected quality level once selected. But they all start at around 480 when the S8 display is set to 1080.
anyone else seeing this bug?
I might try a factory reset to see if it corrects this annoying little bug. Please chime in if you have any info, TIA.

Question Significant display motion blur

The display on this phone has substantial problems with motion blur, and I'm floored that nobody else seems to be talking about it. I've already replaced the phone once, and both the original and replacement have the same issue. When scrolling text (especially darker or bolder text), there's noticeable smearing of the letters, and 24/30 fps videos look awful. I'm about ready to return the Ultra and find something else, because it's pretty severe and I can't unsee it.
Is anyone else noticing this?

No can you post a video showing what you mean
I’m surprised too that people aren’t commenting on this. I have noticed the motion blur, particularly bold black text on a white background. This is at 120Hz. My Onplus 8t has a 120Hz screen and it has less blur but is not quite so smooth when scrolling. However, the S21 ultra is way better than my iPad Pro which is complete smeary mess.
I noticed it too, especially compared to S20+ which I also have. It almost looks like it's on 60hz instead of 120hz.
But I can live with it.
I also have significant motion smearing with my S21 Ultra. I did a side by side comparison to a OP7tpro to make sure that it was not my eyes playing tricks on me. I also tried with a friend's S21 Ultra and it yielded the same result so I know it's not a random defective unit on my side. I notice the issue prevalent on videos that are rendered with the HEVC codec. I really hope Samsung has an update that fixes the issue. The whole point of getting an Ultra phone was for a no compromises phone and this hasn't been the case
All LTPO displays will have this to some extent.

Let's see if the iPhone 13 has this issue.
Can you recommend a YouTube video or a link to video file to see this effect on?
(This answer was made by using past experiences and pointing out some interesting things that have happened so this is not guaranteed to be correct and id recommend for someone to confirm this first)
Id say its just the ghosting (not too sure as ive never owned this device but its most likely to be it)
ghosting is basically a little imperfection on many screens that make the frames ghost out a bit as the next one comes in makimg the effect of the motion blur.
The info after this may be false (recommended to test the info incomming and see for yourself) but can help with finding out what causes ghosting:
Having a look on my laptop screens and looking at how the stuff is it seems to either "paints" (usually happenes when a games in fullscreen. chunks of the screen loading in, it dosent happen instantly with the whole thing), or either suttle ghosting (when you see your cursor and your desk and are at the os itself, im not sure why this happenes though, if the software or drivers were to do this on purpose why they dont choose to or cant when somthings truely fullscreen)
This dosent happen on phones and all i see is suttle ghosting BUT ive seen that in bootloaders and in recovery this does "paint" instead of ghost
ive also seen that without drivers and stuff (like going into win 10 setup) it also paints
So im not sure if the drivers or smt else is doing this on purpose and why or how they have chosen this to happen for quite some time.

Question Picture in Picture, Split Screen etc - Refresh Rate drops to 60Hz (EXYNOS)

Hi there, I'd not noticed this before the Android 12 update, but refresh rate appears to drop from 120Hz to 60Hz when using Picture in Picture or Split Screen views. Can anyone else reproduce this please?
You can confirm this by going into developer mode and toggling to always display the refresh rate.
Try a factory reset if you haven't already and it was a OTA upgrade...
I'd rather see if others can reproduce this first - would have thought it's a simple enough thing to test and post your results here, thanks!
Hi SSJ100, I just tested this to confirm for you, it does drop to 60hz immediately and I cannot prompt it to 120hz until I return to full screen view
Further testing, if i have video running in the background, Amazon, netflix or YouTube it stays at 120 with windowed mode on

Thanks for checking! Again though, I'm quite amazed (okay, maybe not quite the word hehe) at how no one has reported this issue in this forum (and at least one other "major" forum). If they have, please excuse my ignorance and I'd appreciate a link to the thread.
I can also confirm that this issue persists even after updating to the so-called bug fixing patch "BUKG".

Interesting how bugs like this manifest sometimes huh hehe. I first noticed this issue with Google Maps when I was navigating with it and switching to another app (which automatically forces Google Maps app to become picture in picture mode). Scrolling looks quite different and jittery - it's amazing how one gets used to 120Hz!
Have you tried the tiles app developed by a user on here? It can force refresh rates very easily and just requires an adb permission.....there was a thread the other day

There is some black magic going on with these 120Hz panels. 60 Hz never seemed to be a problem before these high refresh rate displays started popping up. I remember smooth as butter 60Hz phones (both iphones and android). But now when i use a 120Hz panel at a 60Hz refresh rate, it feels like something inside the phone is in it's death throes, coughing and spluttering - the stutter is jarring! But if I use my wife's OnePlus 6 (which has a fixed 60Hz screen), it doesn't feel so bad. It's definitely not as smooth as 120Hz but the 60Hz on a 60Hz panel feels smoother than 60Hz on a 120Hz panel. Is it only me or has anyone else had a similar experience?
I have the same issue as well..so pissed..using latest BUKG
I'm on Android 11, One UI 3 still, and when my phone displays split screen apps the refresh rate drops from 120 down to 60.
This must be some battery saving feature, because If I toggle performance mode (processing speed) from the drop down quick menu, the fps shoots back up to 120 in split screen.
So an easy fix if you need 120 in split screen.

Yes, that seems to "fix" it for split screen. However, it doesn't resolve picture in picture fps drop to 60Hz.
Hmm must be an Android 12 thing. I'm sat here typing this with YouTube playing pip and the screen is holding 120fps even with my finger removed from the screen.
I did try Android 12 when the public version was released, but didn't like it, so downgraded back to the last version of 11, with a clean wipe.
Ok something odd going off, my screen seems to be stuck at 120!
Forcing it back to 60 in display options, works. Putting it back to adaptive, keeps the screen at 120. Even on the lock screen, and AOD!
I might try a reboot.

If you're in low ambient light, screen at low brightness, panel will be locked at 120Hz even with adaptive selected. Move to bright area or increase screen brightness and check if you are able to get to 60Hz

Yes, I've only noticed this issue since Android 12 with the picture-in-picture scenario. Hopefully Samsung fixes this soon.

Nothing odd there - as previous poster mentioned, it's always behaved that way when the ambient lighting is low enough. And yes, has always been that way for AOD too. I never understood why 120Hz is required particularly for that!
I think that after android 12, my unlock animation is rendered at 60hz because it is sometimes sluggish. Did a full factory reset and i have the last update. Do you guys experience the same? other than that the phone is perfectly smooth
Still the same issue with BULC December update. Somewhat disappointing, as you'd think this should be quite an easy fix.
Still same issue after BULG update with PIP. As a previous person has noted, split-screen mode appears to be auto-throttled to 60Hz by default, and the only way to change this so it remains at 120Hz is by toggling "High" or "Maximum" "Processing speed".
