I'm not sure if this is the same as the well known "Nexus One 3G problem". I'm running CyanogenMod 6. I have been having occasional trouble on my home carrier (WIND Mobile Canada) where every once in a while, even though the 3G or H icon appears, I can't access anything and when I try the ping test under Testing/Phone information it fails.
The only way I'm able to get the Internet back is to disable mobile data (via widget) and re-enable. Then it lasts again for a while.
I'm currently on vacation in the US and using a T-Mobile SIM. It seems this problem is even worse on their network. Sometimes I only get maybe 2-5 minutes of a 3G connection before it freezes out like this. I've been leaving it on EDGE just to keep it stable, but this is obviously not an ideal solution.
About two weeks ago I started trying nightly builds of CM6 as I was interested in the FM Radio, and I have noticed this issue much more since then. It might be related, but it could also be a coincidence, and I don't want to start messing around with multiple ROM flashes while on vacation if that's not the problem in the first place. Any ideas on what to do?
Thanks
Charles
its a bug with 2.2.1,my nexus does this too. it will get stuck with the data up arrow lit up when the data stops working, turning data off and back on fixes it. there is even a post in the google bug tracker about it. I know for sure it happens in both FRG83 and FRF91,but I'm not sure exactly when it started. 2.1 roms for the N1 don't do it,and my g1 doesnt on 1.0-2.1,but on froyo roms it does exactly the same thing as the nexus.
I hope someone (google or a dev) can fix this, because its really annoying. my g1 is back to donut because its faster, and I'm considering going back to a 2.1 rom on the N1. I've confirmed the issue on ChromaticDream (g1),CM Nightlies (I've tried 198,200,201,202,203,220),CM6.0.0,Enomther's TheOfficialNexus (10/11/10),and a few others.
I thought I was the only one who noticed this bug. Does it occur in the stock (non-rooted) versions of 2.2.1 as well?
Just an update, although I do periodically experience this on my home provider (WIND Mobile Canada), it turns out that T-Mobile is having 3G issues in Portland this exact week and everyone's experiencing it. So the fact that 3G is nearly unusable on my trip is TMo's fault and not Android's.
UPDATE: I downgraded my radio to the official froyo radio (4.0-something lol) and my timeout problems are no more so far....
I have the same problem but with since I'm using nightlies 215 the problem is gone (i'm using 508 radio)
but lately I'm using nightlies 221 and 223 and the problem is back
I settled on 204 for vacation because I didn't want to fiddle with the ROM 10 hours away from my desktop comp! Now that I'm home, keep this thread updated with which builds seem to have a stable 3G connection.
I just flashed 225 with 512 radio and I can say this build is stable, no more intermittent connection lost. 225 nightlies is fast as well
Good to know. I'm on the 5.08 radio; is there a significant difference with 5.12?
Hello, I've been reading a lot on here with people that's having GPS and WiFi issues on their Note 3. I have had WiFi issues since day one and recently starting having GPS issues.
I went back to Best Buy and exchanged it for a brand new one, I was about 32 days into it (I'm a elite plus member so I have 45 days), and I'll be a son of a gun if the GPS works absolutely flawlessly now and I haven't had one WiFi issue yet.
I was really hoping these issues would be fixed by an OTA, but it seems like replacement fixed it right up.
Has anybody else had an experience like this or am I just lucky it works?
I've got an annoying problem with my phone where the Wifi turns off when my phone is idle or asleep. This means my WhatsApp for Web disconnects and also my Moto Connect plays up too.
I've got the same problem at home, work and parents house so can't be an issue with all 3 networks. The keep wifi on during sleep option is set to Always before anyone mentions this to me.
Phone is running Lollipop 5.0 in the UK and is NOT rooted.
I noticed it doesn't happen when the phone is charging though.
Any ideas?
Right I've now tried changing the Sleep setting to Never but get the same problem.
Also tried connecting to the router via WPS but no luck.
Router is a Superhub 2. I've ruled out that it's the Superhub as I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini that is running fine without a single drop out.
Definitely something Moto X related.
I've also tried on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands with same results!
Try looking within the WiFi settings on the phone. Mine has this

Mine is identical to yours other than the fact that I don't have the wifi optimization option.
Right I've just cleared the cache as instructed by Motorola support.
Still have the same problem even after clearing cache.
Ok I can confirm that the issue goes away when in safe mode.
This is starting to piss me off as I don't have any way of checking if it's an app affecting my wifi disconnections!!!
I've finally found and fixed the problem myself!!
I decided to turn my bluetooth on (even though it wasn't connected to any bluetooth devices). This seems to stop the phone from causing the wifi to go to sleep!
It seems like it's a bug in the Moto X Lollipop firmware. How do I report bugs to Motorola??
It's funny how most say it's apps that cause strange behaviour but for me it's been the actual Android firmware each time I've ever had an issue!
I hope it gets fixed soon.

It's a known bug of 5.0, and already fixed for 5.1. Source, at the "Bug fixes section".
Great that you found a workarround.
Cheers!
Manuel.
Hey glad to know it's a well known bug. The work around still doesn't work. It still keeps disconnecting all the time! Driving me mad!! If the 5.1 update doesn't fix it for me, I'll need to try and get a refund and go for something else. Shame as I really like the Moto X but I can't live with an issue as stupid as this!
I'm not sure Motorola are aware of this issue at all. See their comment below from one of their support staff I'm speaking to now:
Santhosh: We have not received any reports regarding Wi-FI issue after the Android Lollipop update but please give me a moment I will provide the solution for this issue.
His solution for the issue was to get me to do a factory reset lol. I already did this when I first got updated to Lollipop!!
Going to try doing another one now to see if it actually makes any difference. Then will install a few apps at a time or something.
I am connected to WiFi just about all of time, and I have never experienced this.
Right I've done a factory reset and started completely afresh with none of my data or apps restored. WiFi has been solid; I've not had a single drop out!
I'm going to install just a couple of apps at a time and keep an eye out if the issue comes back until I find the culprit.
Hi
My phone was perfect (until now) with the WIFI since november 2014 even after I upgraded it to 5.0
But today, it suddenly starts with this problem by itself. so I restored it to factory defaults with no luck, I installed a new firmware, and still has the bug.
So, why it shows up until now by itself without any mod, app or update?
Sorry for my English.
Today I upgraded it to 5.1 and the issue persists
I had to back to stock 4.4.4. and now my wifi has been fixed so far, working good without interruption until now.
I hope this has fix the problem from sourse, and I'll wait a few days to upgrade it again.
EDIT: Has been a month since my downgrade to 4.4.4. and my WIFI still rocks.
Just want to say that I'm having the same issue since the update to 5.1. Wifi is set to be always on during sleep, but I regularly wake up my phone only to find it connected to 4G, and switching to wifi a few seconds after waking up.
I'm on a locked bootloader (unrooted of course). I did a full reset after the update...
I'm sorry to say that I've seen more little glitches since 5.1 than anything I noticed on 5.0.
EDIT: another issue I'm having is the stock mail client not syncing saying that there is no network connection. My exchange account (push) works fine however...
Just to say the issue has started for me too since the update to 5.1.
I've done 2 factory resets but no luck trying to fix this very annoying problem.
Motorola have asked me to send my phone in for repair so I'll try that and see what happens.
Hi,
I have stock 4.0.3 and i wanted to know if there is any solution for the annoying bug that cuts wifi hotspot (tethering) after 5 minutes?
Whenever i turn tethering on, it automatically disconnects after 5 minutes, even if another device is connected.
Any tip about fixing this huge bug will be very appreciated.
Thanks
Anyone ??
I'm sure more people have noticed this bug...
Yes noticed it.
Using freedom os fixed it.
It's based on stock oos only.
I'm on freedom os and I encounter the same bug. My solution was to remove wifi password

I have password on still my WiFi isn't shutting down after 5 mins now.
Lucky me maybe.
Also noticed that yesterday...
Noticed this two days ago when internet was down at my house and I tried using my hotspot to get work done. Was quiet annoying.

That strange I just got my OP3T and havent needed to use the hotspot yet. But my nexus 5x just started doing the same thing recently, made me wonder if its a more wide spread issue across different devices.
Yes it's very strange.
I've read somewhere else that it's only happening after the oxygen 4.0.3 update.
noticed this and can't find a solution yet.
I just got my 3T two weeks ago and I haven't tested WiFi tethering, my phone is running OOS 4.0.3, rooted with Magisk and passes SafetyNet.
I know my old Galaxy S4 worked fine for tethering for hours.
I will test WiFi tethering and to my laptop this evening while streaming content from YouTube and see if my tethering lasts longer than 5 minutes. I will also test if I can properly turn the WiFi toggle on and off without the phone acting up.
Uh this is something I will test out as well. I need a working tethering Hotspot for work and I didn't expect any issues here (just got my OP3t a few days ago.

I've had mine a couple of weeks now and tethered a couple of times and had no issues, however, I've resisted the temptation to update to 4.0.3, due to the touch latency issue and now maybe because of this, and only updated to 3.5.4. So maybe it's a 4.0.3 issue as mentioned?
Greetings, I just wanted to follow up and state that my tethering worked just fine. I did three 10 minutes videos on YouTube at 1080p and consumed 600MB of my data plan.
No interruptions or disconnects. My 3T was on a 4G connection the entire time. Plus I did this test when my 3T was at 14% battery and went down to 8% battery.
Once again my specs are the following, OOS 4.0.3 and Magisk Rooted.
The actual issue is hotspot will be disabled if no device is connected.
Only fix I found was using either Tasker or Automate to check that and switch it back on (I use a location trigger, since I need while at office only).

When enabling Portable hotspot, which uses Mobile Data and allows others to connected to the phone, it states inside "Connected Device Manager" that this feature will be turned off after 5 minutes if there is no device connected.
I'm not sure that this is a problem, I'm sure my Galaxy S4 did the same thing when no device is connected after a period of time.
But yes creating a Tasker profile to keep toggling this on when it turns off would work.
Hi I just brought a xaomi mi 9 in Beijing it's running the Chinese stable rom, I've just got home to Australia and I'm having problems tethering it to my windows PC but it tethers fine to my Android car stereo which is strange, I've never had this problem before. Anyone got any ideas of what's going on. I'm guessing the problem might be fixed when I change roms but I can't do that for another 15 days yet.
FIXED!!! I recently did FACTORY RESET 2 times, in the first time it didn't work, but after second time it works, at least until now hahah.
