I searched for any information on the Speck case, but didn't see anything on them. I just had one overnighted to me from Verizon, and I am really enjoying it so far. Seems very durable and looks really sweet. The power button is a bit stiff, but I have the optical button bound to wake from sleep as well so its not so bad. Speck Candyshell Case If you are interested in picking one up overnight, you can use the coupon code FREEOVERNT.
I personally wasn't too fond of that case. I bought it, had it for 3 days, and sold it on Android Central for $15. The red on the case was more pink than red and the back of the case scratches far too easily. To each their own though.
This is the case I have and I love it. I left the clear sticker on the back slides out of my pocket very easy.

Awesome case, im pretty sure your not going to get a better case protections wise. It looks really good too. It does scratch easy, but meh, its a case thats why its there. It even has raised edges so if you flip it upside down the screen doesn't touch. The fit is crazy and probably cant be topped by another case. Im waiting for unrevoked so i can root my phone and hopefully get enough battery life back to where i can ditch my massive 3500 battery and case and go back to my speck.
is this case 1 piece, or 2 like innocase active
and.anyone have any pics of it on their phone?
Nm, its a 1 piece...have 2 already

Ive used speck candy shells on all my devices (Iphone, iPad, incredible). Can't beat it for what it is, extremely durable, slim, raised front for screen protection, and fits to form of the phone. The soft inner material will never scratch, and it doesn't mess with Full screen protectors! Wish they made them in other colors.
I have this case and it's a very good case... the red areas do get discolored/dirty though

I've heard alcohol on a cotton ball will clean the pink and restore it to red.. haven't tried it yet..
This is one of the best fitting one piece cases I have had. The red does tend to get dirty easily but cleans up easily with just water and a piece of paper towel. I prefer it to the two piece cases because if you drop it it don"t fall apart like the others. Buttons were a little stiff in the beginning but have loosened up to the point where they are just perfect now. I would recommend this case to anyone.
omg thank you i was looking for this!!
The NS looks slick as hell naked, no question there. But I'm terrified to set the thing down because the back is so glossy and plasticity. Hope somebody makes a nice rubberized door for it like the EVO has. Because I HATE cases.
Ditto.... I already have a few small scratches

If you can't handle a spray can properly, that's kinda depressing.
This is actually not a bad idea. You could use Plasti-dip for this. Just spray the 1st coat. Let it dry than spray another. I say spray about 4 coats and once its dry it will be matte black in color and provide you a nice grip and the best thing is that it will peel right off cause it dries as plastic!. I might actually do this. I have a few can's left from using on my car. (Available at Home Depot and probably lowes)

Even if you spray it evenly, the resulting back cover will not be flush with the rest of the phone. Do you have any pictures of a DIY job that looks good? I know people have tried with the other Galaxy S phones (Captivate excluded) but I haven't seen any that look that good IMO.
The back will cost 5-10$ to replace... Don't worry so much

Obviously, but have you seen pictures where it didn't look like a DIY POS like the person said? You end up having a nice phone with an ugly back cover that is not flush with the sides of the phone. If you have seen a good DIY job, show some pics like I said so we can see what it looks like. What is acceptable looking to you may not be to others.
The PlastiDip looks quite nice, and I am very picky. I also like the grip. The stock case is ugly...too glossy, a fingerprint magnet, and slippery to the point where I nearly drop the phone.
My Nexus S is currently my only camera so I can't post any decent photos of the completed cover on the phone, but I'll post some later when my girlfriend gets home. I'm sure the majority of you will be pleasantly surprised at the results.
Here's a shot I took after applying the second coat.

It's gonna cost a little more than $5. The Nexus S has a NFC antenna molded into the rear cover, along with some connection points that allow it to interface with the phone.
I doubt that you could find a back for a SGS for $5, much less a NS.

It's not molded in, it's an printed circuit on an vinyl base with adhesive, that is stuck to the inside of the cover.
Also NFC/RFID are dirt cheap to produce.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. It looks better than I thought a DIY job would. Nice.
Hi guys,
I've seen the DIY project which is a pretty decent looking alternative but I was wondering if anyone has seen an actual Matte Battery Door yet? It'd be cool to have one like the Epic 4G's which still said Google on the back. (I think the Google looks oddly classy )
My searches have come up kinda empty so thought I'd ask.
Mini rant.... WHY?! WHY???! Is the back cover so prone to scratches.. it been only a week and a half or so and already I've seen scratches developing, in fact another happened just today.. it's really the one and only thing I don't like about it.. not sure what they were thinking..
Well if anybody has seen alternatives please let me know!
Thanks!

Plasti Dip it
you can get the invisibleshield dry from any of the sprint stores-- it's all they carry.
if you get the invisibleshield from ZAGG, they send the "wet" version, which is the cover everyone's used to.
the dry version is matte, and thinner, and doesn't use spray/sponge/liquid. it's not as "tacky" or sticky as the wet version, and you can still clearly see the google/samsung logo.
just be real sure to follow the instructions, squeegee from the center out, and give it a couple of days to fully cure. i saw a bunch of micro bubbles and what look like flaws after applications, and it looked like the dry shield didn't fully seal around the tiny dots on the cover, but after a couple of days it was perfectly sealed in. don't squeegee too hard, especially around the curves. it'll stick, and give it a day or two.
pretty happy with it, and it comes with the regular clear/tacky/sticky front shield, too, which is also applied dry. i found the squeegee to be a bit too stiff, and it's easy to dent and stretch the shield when squeegeeing it out.
ZAGG says to keep the device off, cuz the heat or something will affect curing. i just left mine on after application, and everything is perfect. there's orange peel, but it's minimal. no problems with touch sensitivity, and if anything i think it's better because fingerprints and oil don't show up.
i wonder if it's even worth shielding the front, though. i have an old blackberry that had nothing on it, and the screen i think is plastic, and i treated it like crap. no scratches.
but yeah, just go to a sprint store. they have em. best buy around here only sells the front shield. i prefer the dry matte back because it's thinner, and still does a good job.
fyi: ZAGG's guarantee and return policy are top notch. registering on their site is simple, and they'll ship out a replacement pretty quickly, and you just mail back your old shield as proof. they don't care what condition it's in. before i just ripped off an old shield and slapped it on a piece of paper.

So the Nexus S still doesn't have any third party back covers or battery doors? I can't stand the shiny plastic back. All I see on ebay are oem battery doors that are the same thing. Don't want to use a sticker/shield or dip.

Correct.
The white version of the Nexus S actually has a very nice textured back on it. I wanted the white color to begin with but after seeing (and feeling) the difference between the backplate on the black version versus the white version, I much prefer the white one. The black one has no grip to it and, like the OP said, it scratches way too easily.
Yeah I thought about the zagg body shield but they unfortunately only had the screen. I decided to grab the wet one instead and I've never had better luck applying a screen protector.. heh the "wetness" really makes it easy to get the bubbles out and it cures awesome.
As for the battery cover.. it's already got a few scratches, but on top of that in the lower left corner it doesn't seem to snap in very securely, even in general use when tapping on the lower left part of the phone you can feel the battery door.. "click" a little bit as if its not latched properly, it makes a audible click sound as well.
I resolved this issue by putting a very thin strip of scotch tape on the inside of the door along the edge which produces just enough pressure to keep the clicking from happening and it feels more secure. (No you can't see it )
SO I'll probably just buy a new battery door eventually and use a body shield.. hopefully the new one will latch a bit more securely as well. It's not a big big deal, and the DIY fix by me is definitely just me nitpicking the tiny click feeling but still.. I think Samsung makes good products most of the time but they really should step up the build quality a little bit.
Thanks for the suggestions though guys
Actually I think I'm going to try the plasti dip on the existing cover to.. I could see that helping the latch as well because it would be just the tiniest bit thicker it would seem.

Not that I am aware of, sorry.
I was just surfing amazon and found a case available that i hadn't seen before. It's by Devicewear, called The Ridge. I can't link to it as it's my first post, though i thought i'd give everyone a heads up.
Seems like an awesome case, with everything that I was looking for:
Slim profile, hard backing, folio cover, auto sleep/start, microfiber lining, decent price, available.
I ordered it and should be arriving tomorrow, i'll try to take some pics and have a short review soon if people are interested. I already have the poetic hardback, which is nice, but this one seems to be the perfect case for me.
That looks pretty nice, looking forward to your review.

Totally is a good marketing scheme. Made me realize that this case is in the market and I bought it because it looks like the best one for my needs available.
I looked up a review of their iPad case and they check out:

Quick Review and pics
Wow, I had no idea that me posting that would make it seem like I'm schilling for them. Not sure what I can say to have you guys believe otherwise, but oh well. I'm not affiliated with them in any sense.
Anyways, for those that would care, it came in today (yay Amazon next-day shipping!) and I took some ****ty cell-phone pics and have some initial impressions.
The Good:
Very slim profile, doesn't add much bulk at all.
While not real, the "vegan leather" does feel pretty good and grippy in the hand. Definitely better than the pu leather stuff.
The inner lining of the front cover has some sort of rubbery, felt-ish material that seems like it will protect pretty well against scratches n such.
All buttons, ports and speakers are well-exposed and have easy access.
I love the combo of hard case to protect the back and cover for the front.
Auto sleep/awake seems to work pretty well.
The Nexus does fit pretty snugly in the case, doesn't seem like it will pop out unless coaxed.
The little ridges in the front cover line up with a ridge on the inside edge of the case to prop it up at multiple angles. It seems really sturdy, and a lot less bulky than the giant deep ridges i have in my poetic hardback.
It also flips over for a pretty good typing angle.
The not so good:
The PU backing seems a little flimsy, I've never had one of these hard cases before so I'm not sure how sturdy they normally are, but it seems like it flexes kind of easily.
While the clamps on the top and bottom edges of the cover hold it in place pretty well, they are definitely pretty flimsy and don't "snap" like you would like them to. I can also see them getting in the way, it would have been nice if they would have found another way to keep the cover shut against the tablet, like a magnet or a clamp on the right side. At least it stays in place though.
Because the case is synthetic leather, it does have a chemical smell to it, which i'm sure will dissipate over time.
Overall, I'm pretty impressed with the case. I really wish the plastic was a bit sturdier, the poetic slimline from the pictures I have seen looks a little thicker. I really do like it, and I'm happy I made the purchase. If anybody wants more pics let me know and I'll do what I can.
Looks like the clips would get in the way if the front flap was folded all the way back like a book and then set on a flat surface. Correct?

They are noticable, but don't get in the way nearly as much as I would have thought. I have noticed, however, that with the back folded all the way back the magnet is strong enough to put the tablet back to sleep, so I have to put a finger in between to keep it on. Definitely annoying.
This is definitely one of the better looking cases for the N7. Its a little pricey though.

Looks like a great case except for this point, definitely a problem. I wonder if it's possible to take out the magnet somehow, I don't even care about the wake/sleep function much.

Is it possible to fold it in such a way that the clamps are facing up the back case (when folded back for reading), so that maybe they can snap onto the PU backing?
I guess it's a bit hard to explain but since the front cover extends all the way to the middle of the back case, is it possible to fold that part to an opposite direction (instead of folding the usual line along on the left edge of the case)
If this works, maybe it can avoid the problem you mentioned in another post, about the magnet being too strong and put the device to sleep when the front is folded back.

I don't think there's any way you can get the clips to face that direction, but I have found that if you keep the cover folded along the natural crease, forming a little triangle, I've been able to avoid the problem as well as giving you a nice little grip to hold onto. Thus far I am really enjoying the case. Although now part of me wants one of the Portenzo or Treegloo cases, they look really nice.
I installed the Skinomi clear matte skin on the back a few days ago. I'm really not a fan of how the back glass feels. It's slippery, attracts fingerprints, and gets slimey.
Personally, installing this has made the phone feel so much better. Plus, if you're going caseless like me, you mostly retain the original look of the phone.
For the most part, I did a decent job installing it. I put too much pressure on some parts when getting the bubbles out and dented the skin (it's wet install). Those are the odd looking spots in the pictures. Otherwise, all the bubbles came out over night. It also comes with clear matte sides and a font screen protector, which I don't plan on ever putting on. I recommend this is you're not a fan of the glass feel!
Edit: Here's a video that seoulbrova did of the clear skin (non-matte) https://youtu.be/K1kA2rK4y7k

Are you getting a substantial amount of grip from the skin? Its my biggest concern. I hate cases and even more so on big phones because the width is right where I max out now and a case kills the perfection of the width to body ratio. I saw the Sammy clear case with just corners but frankly the corners still look annoying, large and the clear case doesn't add much grip which is my entire issue.

Yes, but I was doing one handed without the skin too. I use pie control to put the home, back, and multitasking in the sides so I don't have to do hand gymnastics to get to the bottom of the phone. This way I can hold it so maybe 80% of the screen is accessible one handed. I think stretching your fingers to reach parts of the phone will lead to more accidental drops.

Nice video. I added the link into the OP. Hope you don't mind. I wonder how the matte skin vs the clear skin compares in grip.
I've received mine on Thursday, it's been on the phone for 2 days now.
The fit could be better, and the edges tend to collect dust but it does look quite nice.
The texture is not tacky and reminds me of matte polycarbonate.
