The sdcard isn't wiped with a factory reset through TWRP. So it is no different than other phones. Make a nandroid, titanium backup, or whatever you want to use. Factory reset through TWRP. Flash ROM + other stuff if necessary (Gapps, kernel, root, xposed....etc). Everything on your sdcard will still be there. Note that you can wipe out everything on your phone through TWRP, but a factory reset knows to save it (I believe TWRP even has something along the lines of not including internal storage).
The beauty of custom ROMs is that there is no best ROM. Everyone has different preferences, and as such there are different ROMs that are built with different ideas in mind. Some may lean toward ROMs that have every feature they can cram into the ROM. While others may want ROMs that are much closer to stock with just a couple extra features. It really all depends. My advice is to figure out what features interest you, figure out a few ROMs that cover most of those. Perhaps glance through the last few pages of those ROMs to see if there are any confirmed problems that may be dealbreakers for you. Then flash it. Play with it a day or two, then flash different ROM if it interests you.

Hey all, recently bought the Sprint HTC Hero CDMA, got it rooted, flashed, and using ModACO 2.2 Custom.
Before and After I installed the ROM
When I go to "settings" > "phone info" it says "firmware 1.5"
My question is, can I install a custom ROM that is higher than Android 1.5, or can I only use the custom ROMS under Android 1.5 category?

First of all, as long as your posting a general question you "NEED" to post it under "General" or "Q&A" category!!
Once you are rooted, you can install "any" ROM that's compatible with your device and carrier!!!
Can some admin please move this thread to appropriate section?
Sorry and Thanks
Sorry, wasn't sure if I should do general or here just because it has to do with ROMS.
But, thank you for answering my question
I bet you guys are great to party with. Do you call the cops on someone that's had a couple beers too? Let the mods do their job. They don't need you crying tattle-tale.
To answer the original question, yes you can use any ROM in this section whether it's 1.5 or 2.1. Just pick one that has the features you want and go for it. Be sure to nandroid.
Going to try Aloysius 2.1
It has Apps2SD already installed it so it says, I've still been trying to get that to work right.
You just gotta wipe phone, partition sd fat32+ext2+swap, than install the new update.zip ROM right?
Just follow the instructions the the thread of the ROM of your choice. You'll do fine.
Well said sub. Well said. But yes just follow directions and search the forum. You will learn a lot.

Yeah...Make sure to backup anything on your sdcard to your computer including your very 1st nandroid. Do not lose it. Which recovery do you have 1.6.2 or 1.5.2 or 1.2.3?
When creating the partitions, leave the defauts as they are unless you plan on installing 800+ apps. Most of the time the ROM will tell you what to do. Always nandroid and also copy your nandroid folder to your computer so you don't lose everything if you sd card fails
MOD EDIT - Moved to Q&A
I have 1.2.3
I got Aloysius up and running, still having trouble with the Apps2SD though.
Once I go into DConfig and save my settings it asks me to reboot. Not sure why, but phone won't start up with microSD card in it. It reads the card if I put it in after reboot though.
Hi.
So my Awesome man @tetakpatak helped me to fix my phone yesterday. Although it seemed hard it was quite easy. Too easy. That's where my question goes. I installed Froyo "stock" rom after my phone was "broken" and after that got a new kernel and installed CM.
Can I do this every time? I mean when I want to change Kernel or Rom I could just wipe phone, Install Froyo by Odin and later go with any ROM that there is in ROM section?
Or it doesn't work that way? Or I need to install older versions of roms and update them?
Lets say I want to install ParanoidAndroid or Darky instead of my CM now - I just wipe all data and cache and install.zip thru CWM?
What about Kernel?
Thanks in advance, have a nice day.

Great it works now, mate
In general, yes, after anything with custom ROMs goes wrong it is best one can do to reflash it with a stock ROM. It can actually be any stock ROM, I just adviced to do it with Froyo as I've checked short ago that all download links are still "alive".... and.... in my opinion Froyo is somehow really good ground to be updated to the CM.
So it would be wise to save all the files and software you used, as they worked well for your phone
No problem flashing and trying other ROMs. Always read well the opening post of the threads and pay attention what is important to do. Always save your data externally (and backup your IMEI/efs with terminal emulator app) and wipe all before changing ROM. If anything goes wrong by overwriting your custom ROM, flash stock ROM again and upgrade from there
My last words.... to all users of an amazing, old, good SGS GT-i9000: please consider to make a little donation to the developer pawitp. That amazing developer keeps this phone still alive. Nearly all kernels and ROMs you find on the forum wouldn't exist if pawitp wasn't there. He now works on stabilizing the CM10.2 / Android 4.3 for our beloved i9000 somewhere in Thailand, and he doesn't even own this phone!
Kernels
Do you need to wipe data in order to install a new kernel? I've never tried it before and would rather not mess it up.

Hey guys, how's it going?
Well, I recently bought an HTC One M8. It is the Sprint Variant I believe. So it was an unlocked version with ViperOne 1.7.0 installed. I checked for updates and found there was an update for 1.8.0, to which I instantly updated. I was aware that Viper 2.4.0 is available for the device too, hence my question is if it's okay to update to flash/update full ROMs to this unlocked M8? I am aware that I would lose the unlock on non Sense based ROMs though. So, is there anything I should consider/remember before flashing the full ROM to the device?
Another problem I am facing is with achieving S Off. I am aware about what all of this is as I have always been involved with such things but always with factory unlocked variants. Anyway, I tried the firewater method, for at least 10 times but everytime it says that it can't S Off my device. (Screenshot Attached)

Is there something I can do about this? Anyone who had faced this and resolved it?
Other than these two little issues, my final question is that IF in case anything goes wrong, would a Nandroid Backup restore my phone to the current state INCLUDING the SIM Unlock?
In simpler terms, can anyone tell me what all can and can not affect the SIM unlock on my device? Kernels, ROMs, Mods, etc?
I did a lot of search before posting this thread (two nights) and found answers to many other questions and doubts but not to these three. Sorry if these are all actually noob questions. Thank you!
Anyone?

Only way to achieve soff is sunshine in conditions like you. It works like a charm. if you would have problem with sim unlock, Then, flash Bad Boyz rom and follow the instruction at second post. Just past same path 4 days ago
I would definitely do all of this but now I have another problem. I attempted to change runtime on Venom 1.8.0 but now it wouldn't reboot. Doesn't go past "HTC One" screen on boot. Can't try any other ROM because my broadband is having troubles. *sad*
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA App.
Their is a small zip to change runtime back to dalvik it's your best choice or reflash the Rom next time do a nandroid before doing that. Your phone will not boot because you have a tweak or theme/mod that art doesn't like.. good luck remember the zip is in the read me section of viperrom.

I had a couple of NANDROID backups but they didn't correct the issue either. In the end, I had to wipe system and flash the ROM again. Works fine since then.

So many ROMs about but can anyone recommend one that definitely has Dual SIM, encryption and SD card working (ideally with SD encryption as well as internal but I don't know if any do that yet).
Should I just use this stock ROM, which I presume has all those features working? http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/official-stock-firmware-5-0-2-lxb22-46-t3019612
don't go for stock that's really buggy 5.0.2, go for cm12.1 if you really want any stable one, though I love cm11 kitkat based so hopefully cm12.1 is stable as well with respect to 5.1
Ah, thanks for the warning. Anyone else know if cm12.1 is stable and has all the features that I listed working?

Minimal os is based on cm: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/development/rom-minimal-os-t3174134 .Very smooth and stable, dual SIM out of the box. SD card should work on all roms. I can´t say anything about encyption as I don´t use it and therefore don´t know if any rom support it.

Thanks for the suggestion, it sounds promising but without knowing for sure that encryption is working, I'm reluctant to try it as it's tedious making sure one's backed up everything, made a Nandroid, etc, then flash a ROM, go through the initial setup, wait until the phone's fully charged (it won't let you start the encryption process otherwise), only to try to encrypt and find it doesn't work and you have to flash your old Nandroid back and try and find another ROM that works!
I've asked in the thread for it now though, so hopefully someone can confirm that it works.

Maybe ask the developer(s) before flashing a custom rom if encryption is supported.
For minimal os I can only say that the function is available:

Woops, cross-posted but I've done so now. I wanted to avoid spamming lots of ROM threads with that question, so thought it better to start my own thread instead but now that you've identified a potential candidate that is good in all other respects, it's a good idea to ask in their thread.
Yes, I´ve seen it.
You can send a PM to the dev too. But I don´t think it´s kind of spamming, other people would like to know it too.
Good luck!

Hello there friends! This is my first ever proper rom. I hope u guys will enjoy it!
What is OxygenDust?
OxygenDust is a Operating System that simulates the feel of oxygenOS. But cleaner, and debloated. It uses LineageOS as a base for the system for fast and smooth performance.
The project originally was called PikaOS, And for the Samsung galaxy a3 2017. But this got cancelled as it was made in the schoolvacation and it was hard to make a rom full with feutures. Its easier to just port them over.
Features
Oneplus style launcer
oneplus apps
Rounded UI
OxygenOS sounds (partially broken right now)
serveral pixel stuff built in
Pre-rooted
Oneplus wallpapers (more is coming)
No google apps (only files, alternative to the stock files app [still in the rom])
How do i install OxygenDust?
PLEASE. BACK UP UR IMEI!! THERE IS A CHANCE THE IMEI WILL DISSAPEAR. SERVERAL PEOPLE LOST THEIR IMEI BY BEING STUPID. DONT POINT UR FINGER AT ME FOR UR STUPIDITY.
The file is in a TWRP backup format. Im still figuring out how to make a zip installer.
Make sure you have these things ready or installed:
TWRP 3.7.0 or higher.
Atleast 4gb of internal storage memory free. Highly recommended to format internal storage.
Formatted these partitions: System, data, cache, dalvik
The backup ofc
INSTALLING THE ROM:
Extract the zip file
make sure u have the TWRP folder ready.
format internal storage
Remove the current TWRP folder (secure any other backups)
Place the TWRP folder in internal storage.
Reboot recovery
Go to restore
Select the oxygenOS backup.
restore.
reboot
enjoy!

Screenshots are on the drive folder.

Troubleshooting
I get the stock android bootup logo, what do i do?
This is normal. since it comes with magisk preloaded and some bugs on lineage some things break.
The animations are laggy.
theyre not laggy, theyre on 1.5x. go to developer options too turn them up or down.
My imei is gone.
U shoudve read the thread properly.
No partitions are selected for restore error.
Make sure u have copied the WHOLE TWRP FOLDER. not just the backup, THE WHOLE FOLDER.
My sdcard wont work properly.
This is a bug in lineageOS.
this looks like it has potential to be a decent rom

Well let's hope it has a proper install method from a zip file. Also, you need to take some responsibility by explaining in clear, precise instructions how to backup the IMEI if there is a danger your ROM may lose it.
Does anyone have the rom so we can for now test the rom
