Was the Nexus 6 screen too big? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, Was reading about the Huawei Mate 8 and how it might be used as a basis for the next Nexus 6. The Mate 8 has a 6 inch screen. However, in the article it mentioned that the screen size of the Mate 8 would be reduced to 5.7 (among other changes) as many Nexus 6 users complained that the screen was too big on their device. So, I was wondering, after having used the Nexus 6 for a while now, do folks here really feel that the screen was too big? Thanks!

I like it

It is in the first place the resolution 2560 x 1440 pixels. If that resolution needs 6 inch display it is alright.
I wonder if the 5,7 inch display you mentioned has the same resolution as the N6 display.

The screen size is perfect for me. I wouldn't mind a 6.3" display as long as the bezels were very thin.

I wouldn't want it any smaller.

Phone seems like a completely normal size after a short time of ownership

I have no issues with the size of the phone or the screen-I wouldn't go back to anything smaller really! At first I though it may be too big but after having the phone for about 2 days-I was done with the 5-inchers
The Nexus 6 is the perfect size for me.

Its a good fit for me after the first few days of usage! Would not down size after having this size of a screen.

I thought it was too big at first, but after months of usage my wife's Samsung S6 seems too small. I've always rolled without a case which certainly helps.

Interesting everybody that has replied likes the bigger screen. Perhaps this result is skewed because anyone who was unhappy with the Nexus 6 screen size probably sold their phone and bought a Note 4 instead! lol. I'm not sure what typical person was interviewed by google/huawei that didn't like the bigger screen. For all I know, that was made up. Anyway, I'm planning on getting a new phone and definitely want the larger screen. Some candidates are the Blu pure xl and the Mate 8 when available. Don't know if there are other choices so I'm not sure yet. Thanks for you comments!
Btw, @wolfen69, you might want to check this one out depending on where you live. http://www.honormi.com/letv-max-70 It's 6.3 inches!

I would not get a smaller phone 5.7 is doable but that's pushing it lol

No but i wish the Huawei would have a 6.5" screen or even a 6" like we have now but it won't which makes me sad.

I agree completely. I returned my Moto X Pure to buy the nexus 6. I don't regret it one bit. After using the Note 3 for a couple of years, 5.7 is the smallest I'll go now.

Idk if Ill be getting the new nexus.

I just bought one used, basically sold my oneplus one and was going to buy a oneplus 2 but may never get an invite. This phone is amazing...way better than my opo and I think if you love development and custom ROMs you may as well get an older phone so development is well under way. I get to flash a bunch of different ROMs until I settle on a daily driver...

I realize the screen is bigger but a 5.5 inch phone is basically already two handed so you may as well go for the bigger screen. It doesn't feel much bigger than the OPO in daily use but it is noticeably bigger when watching video

Exactly, when i use my note 4 i notice the smaller screen immediately.
Because of this i may not end up with the larger screen nexus this year ..it should have been left at 6 inches.

Not at all if you are (or were) looking for a 6" screen.

Just like most users here, I wouldn't downgrade to a smaller screen. This Nexus 6 is a beast of a phone no wonder its code name is SHAMU!!!! I love my Nexus 6 fcuk the rest(drops mic ?and walks away?)

Coming from an N5 I thought this would be too much but it's a good size. For me it's about the overall thickness. If it was a brick on my pocket it would suck but it's so thin I barely notice it's there in my pocket.

Too small. I wish the 6.8" Huawei P8max came here, I'd get it in an instant.

Are you getting spoiled by the high rez screen of the Nexus 7?

The thing that really blows me away that hasn't been discussed in most reviews or here is the screen resolution on this 7 inch tablet with a dpi of 213. The text looks so crisp on a web page, close to ipad 3 almost (i know it is not).
As a matter of fact, because of getting use to this clear text, I had a few days left on my return policy for the Asus TF300, which I use to think had a very nice screen, but now the text seems blurry to me. I have heard the same from people switching from ipad 1 or 2 to ipad 3.
Thus, I have decided to return my tf300 and just ordered an Asus TF700 for use as my 10 incher.
Anyone else getting too use to this type of resolution?

Resolution is definitely very nice especially in comparison to my moms iPad 2 from work.

Um... well, the ppi on the Nexus 7 is not really that high. It is higher than that of most tablets out there, but it is lower than almost all current gen Android phones, and even some previous ones. So if you have been at least staring at a Nexus One with a ppi of 254, this should not be all that impressive. Though you do hold it further away from your face.
However it is indeed very impressive by tablet standards. The previous gen iPads had a horrendous ppi of 132. And I believe the highest ppi of any Android tablet is currently found on the 499$ Transformer Prime Infinity with a ppi of 224. So the Nexus 7 surely packs quite a bang.

Seconded. The resolution is very nice, and the color tone is way better than the iPad 3 retina display. That one is just too...warm? It ends up yellowing and dulling colors in a weird way.

Funny... that is exactly what I would say about the 7. Way too warm compared to the rest of my devices (IPad 3, Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S3). Its kind of annoying really. I'm adapting though because I love the size.
My original intention was to get the TF700, i decided that saving $230+ was a better choice and went with the N7 and i love the screen. No complaints about the resolution. :good:
I should make my 800x480 pentile SGS phone look like crap in comparison which is the main reason why I'm getting one.
I watched the transformer movie on it. It looks awesome.

I know the feeling. I upgraded from the iPad 1 to the iPad 3 and I can't even look at the Old one anymore.
Thankfully the N7 has a high res screen so it'll be tolerable by my eyes.
No, because i'm used to 284 DPI on my Galaxy Note. The Nexus 7 has a good screen (especially for the price), but it's nowhere near as good as the AMOLED on the Note.
I agree with th op. screen is great quality. out of all tablets, infinity pad is the best and nexus 7 comes in close second. the text is really crisp and hd movies look really good on it.
For the price its a good screen... but nothing compared to my iPad 3.
It still blows away my pad 1 and my playbook!

Screen will look better than most other tablets except for the new iPad... The clarity won't be as good as your HTC one x because it have more ppi on a smaller screen size... We should not compare tablet screen vs cellphone screen because the phone will always win assuming were talking high end phones!

I guess I did have tablets in mind when I posted this, never even thought about comparing to phone.
However, i would be interested in this comparison though. Web browsing is where I see the effects of a high rez screen the best due to text size. On people with phones that have better dpi like Galaxy nexus, if you open up a web site in ITS DESKTOP VERSION like yahoo.com (and if you have font size set to Normal), can you still read the small texts pretty well? Would be interesting to see the effects of large dpi but on a smaller screen.
I think the screen looks amazing. For the price you can beat this tab. Am happy I got one.
The warm color issues can be fixed with kernels and gama settings. Well I think it can, I fixed my Galaxy Nexus colors by tuning the multipliers

Negatives on Nexus 4

Seems like every time a new nexus seems like in the first three months you can't say anything negative about the phone. It must be better than everything else or bust. Its like the phone you own defines you as a person. Seems like if you think something is bad about a nexus something is wrong with you and a lot you guys attack people who are actually in touch with reality.
Apple does not give a hot damn about a nexus and it laughable to think the number 1 phone maker on the planet is worried about us. The fact that some think they have a hidden smear campaign is just nuts.
The nexus 4 is an awesome phone but it has some flaws like everything else. You can lie to yourself to make your purchase feel better but facts are facts. Here are some of the negatives so people thinking of buying this phone can now what is true and to expect.
1. This phone is very fragile ( more than any other phone I owned ). Its glass front and back so expect to own a case and screen protectors. If this phone is gorilla glass its the crappiest I have ever seen or the weakest. All these guys saying they drop there phones and not even a mark, come on. Common sense you can look at this phone and tell any hard floor and a drop over 1 foot something is getting marked or cracked.
2. After you crack the front the screen stops working and the phone is pretty much junk might as well buy a new one. This is not an iPhone so replacement parts will be hard to find and cost will be high. I can crack an iPhone and for 30-40 bucks fix it myself. Good luck on this its the same as the nexus 7. Once cracked it is pretty much worthless.
3. Phone does get pretty warm if the screen is on for about 20 min even on auto brightness. I know its a thin phone but even with a case its hot in the back.
4. Screen colors are washed and LCD is not great. Not saying its bad but its not winning any awards. Put this next almost any other top phone and you will see why people say its washed. Yes you can adjust but you have to root and flash custom and a custom kernel for best results. Then its a little better but it will always be an LCD can't change that. Viewing angles no good and blacks are not deep blacks.
5. Battery life is just ok, some may even say bad. I am on custom ROMs so its a little better but around 4 hours on screen time on average.
There are a few other minor things but for the most part these are the flaws. I still suggest this phone because its cheap, its unlocked, super fast, stock android, and its sleek and sexy. I am not a troll spent over 2 grand ordering nexus 4's, probably donated hundreds of dollars to devs.
Post what you think the negatives are of this phone.

Sorry I have to disagree.
I have no heating issues, the LCD is far superior than my HTC one x was, and I get consistently over 5 hours screen on time. Unbelievable if you ask me.

And your stock right? I mean depending what you customize you can get 5 hours but a screen shot would help of proof. And the LCD I'm not saying is bad just not amazing. Its sharp but when I look at an amoled I start missing it again.
Yeah I didn't want to name the minor stuff, lots of people don't even know what USB otg is, could said lack of storage, yellow tint, no LTE, etc.
Main flaw is the whole scratch easy and breaks easy and don't break the front glass or it stops working. Has anyone found out why the nexus 7 and 4 have this problem. I am guessing its somewhere along the line of this how they got the cost down so much. After breaking a nexus 7 on carpet I kinda want Google to make the devices better builds or release some cheap parts to fix them.

Not too sure about the N7, but the N4 uses zero gap technology. I don't really remember the details but it's something along the lines of removing a layer from between the screen and digitizer so they can have a screen without a bezel.

when I got my nexus 4, I couldnt wait for it to come and try it out. i was coming from an htc one x. and no way in the world does the nexus 4 screen come close to the htc one x's. and my nexus 4 started having random shutoffs, heated up, battery was draining faster than i could charge. and the camera sucks on this phone. I got myself a note 2 its a solid device and I do miss the pure google experience, but tbh LG effed it up.
My biggest complaints:
-battery life is atrocious compared to my previous devices
-volume rocker gets hit a lot when pushing wake button one-handed
-google support, I feel like I was somewhat suckered into purchasing by having a Qi charging orb, miracast accessories, and the bumper dangled in front of me only to have them nonexistent, sold out and/or just plain silent when it comes to answers regarding future availability
-the flash on the camera needs to be toned down
-audio is pretty muffled when using speakerphone and phone is laying on it's back, thanks to speaker location
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I also have to disagree with the last three points
My phone only gets warm with intense CPU stuff (which is expected...)
I love the colors, and I can easily manipulate them to give richer, deeper colors through kernels and what not of I grow unhappy later
Battery for me is really good... 4+ screen in 18+ hours... On 3G with WiFi its 6+ in 20+

I am not going to discuss the other points but, you are right, the phone is very fragile. Mine suffer a falling from about one meter which cracks the screen. In any case, the replacement by an official client service costs near 150€, transport included, so the complain about the components cost its not fair.

@Fataldesaign what's the matter with you??
You've started at least 8 anti-nexus 4 thread in this forum, most of them which for locked. All of your thread are something negative.
I remember you ate the same guy from that thread where you started calling everyone your hater and all ... There's no need to start so many thread on the flaws of Nexus 4. One or two is OK.
Thread reported. Kindly do not make useless threads now.
I don't understand why people come in some phone's forum, and make a thread "faults of this phone". I mean, if you don't like this phone, at least don't turn those who spent money in getting the device against it? It may have its flaws, but we are OK with them. We don't need reminders about the bad things. I mean, constructive criticism is GOOD. But not pointless pointing out of flaws...
If you have complaints, kindly submit an error report to Google.
Hope you get my point.

Nexus 5 vs Galaxy S4

Continuing with my look at the Nexus 5 here are my thoughts vs the Galaxy S4... coming later this week Nexus 5 vs The One
Feel free to ask any questions would be happy to answer them..
I was really disappointed in Nexus 5 display. They say it uses IPS matrix, but apparently it's a consumer-grade IPS which is crap.
I compare colors of Nexus 5 to a professional monitor from NEC and they are complete off. Whites are just too bright.

Another great advantage on the nexus 5 is price. About $275 CDN cheaper and that is for twice the amount of GB and includes shipping. Can't forget nexus updates and dev support too

Well, there are many factors there, Firstly, no phone to date has shipped with a factory calibrated colors. Its not just hardware that plays a role there. All displays that go from TV displays to car displays are consumer grade. Special ones will cost up to €20000, like an AMOLED based TV or so.
Whatever, the nexus uses IPS technology. Somebody should compare the displays of Nexus 5 and G2. Maybe LG did spare some more on the N5.
If somebody does, please answer here.

As said, it's plastic made to look like aluminium.
However, after using the S4 for the past 5 months I can say it has pretty great build quality (in terms of the actual quality of the build). Yes it's plastic, but it's well put together, robust and without gaps or flexing. So far the N5 seems much the same, it's a different style of plastic, and noticeably lighter but it seems well made.
Ah ok, didn't know that.
Don't you feel that S4 is a bit more solid when you hold it in two hands and type something? Maybe its the weight difference, S4 is a bit heavier.

Heavier yes, but not more solid. Neither of them flex at all, or have any amount of give in them (that you'll notice under normal usage).
I think the S4 might feel a bit nicer because of the extra curves on the side, but that's not really a huge issue. It'll come down to each person, and what they prefer in the hand.
I think its the N5 being a little thicker than the S4. It almost give the N5 a hollow feel with it being really light but still a little chunky. Its the vibration motor compared to the S4 which drives me nuts. The N5s is crap.

Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 gone, but Nexus 5 still there.
I think they will release a phone in that size range be it Nexus 6 mini or Nexus 5 2014/15 or perhaps a new name.
Which is why they continue to support Nexus 5. Kind of like what Samsung does with the 's' and 'note' series.
Is the Nexus 7 still being sold?

Nexus 7 is officially EOL so my guess is N5 is here to stay for a while
Nexus 5 looks sexy on that page. Can't wait for mine to look similar
I think they will keep selling the Nexus 5 for quite some time. Signs are all there. The updated page. The updated screenshots with Lollipop, etc.
The Nexus 6 is nice, but it is WAY too big and WAY too expensive for a lot of the people that bought the Nexus 5.
To me, the real interesting question to consider is what will they do next year?
Will it be Motorola again? And will it be yet another 6" size phone? What will happen to 5"? Will the current LG Nexus 5 be the last of its kind?
Will there be a 2015 Nexus 6 by Motorola (since they usually get two opportunities) and another OEM making a 2015 Nexus 5 (please someone say Sony)?
I hate to jump the gun, but it's something interesting to ponder.
Let oppo make a nexus phone it'll be the best.

In my understandings, Google will keep selling nexus 5 as a smaller variant, because lets face it, a lot of people dont want phablet and they know it. Also price is little high (now its top end hardware there, no cut offs like on nexus 5 so thats normal). But how long they will keep selling n5, i dont know, but i would dare to say until next october.

What do you mean usually? Six phones (counting the upcoming) and five tablets (counting the upcoming and the Transformer Prime) is hardly a relevant sample size.
I still think an Apple made (but spec'd internals like an Android flagship) 5in screen Nexus would be amasing.
On the N5 page it says: "5 Made for what matters". This is exactly perfect. The N5's specs are still good and will continue to be "enough" for a while. A phone that just "works".
With this move, Google effectively covered 2 market segments.

Yeah. I don't feel like I need to upgrade to Nexus 6 and I'm happy with that.
But, I still think they shouldn't make 6" Nexus. Instead, they should make an upgrade version of Nexus 7...
Would make perfect sense to keep the nexus 5 available because the snapdragon 800 is easy good enough I wouldn't upgrade to a phone with say a snapdragon 801 my nexus 5 flies compared to my wife's g3 and that's no slouch also I heard the snapdragon 805 is just another incremental upgrade from the 801.

To me Google made the best possible move this year, also with minimal effort. They already had the iPhone6 counterpart on the market with the Nexus 5, at pretty much half the price or less, so now they also have the 6+ counterpart, also for a much lesser price (still not cheap, but way cheaper). They effectively covered all size ranges right now, with both smartphones and tablets. Sure the N7 may have needed a small bump in specs, but for what it is, a cheap entry level mini tablet, it's more than enough for the kind of consumer looking for something in that range.
aye, I'm buying a 32g black updated one, just as a back up..
I'm not going anywhere from the nexus 5..
I got my phone last month and I'm perfectly happy with it and don't really want the nexus 6. So yeah, they should keep selling the nexus 5 along with the 6 and maybe refresh it next year as a nexus 5 2015 model.

Yes. The Nexus 4 was my first Android phone. I bought one sight unseen and loved it. I ordered a 5 the day it went on sale. For the first time in two years I'm not sure I'll buy the new model. Even ignoring the higher price, I don't know if I want a phone that big. Fortunately the Nexus 5 remains a powerful phone and I can see it carrying me through another year to see if Google rolls out something a bit smaller for 2015.
I'm so happy hearing such good news, because when other manufacturers discontinue support for their products after 18 months Google decided to keep supporting Nexus 5,even beside that it's almost 1 year old now.
That's why now I'm feeling even happier owning such a wonderful device. And really proud of Google's decision.
WELL DONE GOOGLE!
Maybe next year there will be a 5.2" 64bit version of the Nexus 5. After seeing the price of the N6, I decided to buy the N5. (again)
I wish Google wasn't being so quiet regarding their inventory. Was going to get a 16gig model for my wife and was hoping for a price drop. While the price drop seems unlikely now I would at least like to know when more will be coming in.
Anybody notice the Yellow Nexus 5 in the background of the pictures for the Nexus 9 keyboard case??

Another 6" Nexus?

So what do y'all think? I love my Nexus 6 for its shear size, I personally would LOVE to see another huge Nexus like this one! Thoughts?

I really don't think it would ever happen again. I like the size of my Nexus 6 but, I really think that 5.7 in would better suit me for my next phone. Basically, I'm not on the whale phone bandwagon but, I'm not in the 5 in phone camp either.
My greatest desire from the next Nexus is something around 5 inches that I can easily use with one hand and doesn't swing around like giant brick in my pocket that hits me in the nuts every time I take a step. My last 3 phones have all been huge (5.7 inches or larger), so I'm ready for a change.
If they make two Nexuses (or is it Nexii?) again this year, hopefully they'll be of equal specs instead of a huge premium device and a small budget/midrange device.
Yeah agree, even the OP3 felt and looked small in comparison to the 6 inch Nexus i had. Do miss the bigger screen sometimes though when watching youtube, video`s and pics
For me a 5.2 inch screen would be perfect. I had the LG G2 before my nexus 6 and that was for me the perfect size.

I can understand that. But 6" size compared to 5,7" is not much. For me it's the back of the N6. It's round and should be flat. Just for easier fitting in car kit and belt cases.
Secondly an option to choose dark themes for system and G-apps.
The round back I can agree with, if you've never wanted your Nexus 6 to slide off of a flat table, guess what? Too bad! Lol @Face_Plant it's racking you? Jesus! Never had that issue brother LOL I'm a sucker for a huge display, the size of this phone was a HUGE factor in purchasing it, icing on the cake that it was a Nexus, stock Android and a HUGE dev scene!

I like my Nexus 6, but its to wide for me. Something like Nexus 6p, Xperia Z3 perfect for my hand and its easy to use with one hand. Before buying I know that phone is really big, but I bought it because its Nexus and I never buy again other brand than Nexus.
Arguments about the screen size would be different, when the Nexus phones would be exactly the same (inside) and the only difference would be the screen size.

After getting this Nexus 6, I'm sold on them for sure! I'm only going for the Nexus line now.

It's true, I mean, the 6p is more powerful than the 6, but that small bit of screen to me is wonderful. I like how wide the 6 is! The 6p is strangely long to me.
me, being 5'7", with average sized hands, would absolutely LOVE for the next nexus to be 6".. but i have a feeling that it wont happen
I had 2 Nexus 6Ps and on both the bezel bent at the volume rocker. Sold them both instantly and bought (another) White 64gb Nexus 6 sealed in the box for 350. Best phone I've ever had. Still waiting for something worth upgrading to, because obviously the 6P was a FAIL
I love the size of my 6" Nexus 6, but I think it will be easier to use a 5.7" in VR headsets, at least the ones that are available now.

The N6 screen has 1440 x 2560 pixels. I've seen 5,7" phones with 1080 x 1920.
The use of 5,7" would be OK as long apps including G-apps does not use the higher resolution.
Or do I see it wrong?

I was thinking more of the physical size being able to fit into VR headsets. Even with my case off, my Nexus 6 barely fits and even then it's hard to keep the power and volume buttons from getting hit.
Another reason to accept the newer/smaller size on a new Nexus is for the upcoming Daydream, Tango, and Valve.
