Big problem. Suddenly my phone will not turn on. Sits at the white Galaxy S GT-I9000 screen and does not boot. When I put it into download mode and plug it into computer, its suddenly saying "USB Device Not Recognized".
What do I do? PC won't recognize it, it wont boot. can't flash it.....I'm freaking out here...
Did you flash anything to it or root it?

Hi Rick. Try to re-install samsung usb drivers. during this time, take out the battery from the phone. once finished installing the drivers, put back the battery into the phone. Go into downloading mode. Fire up odin, put in the necessary firmwares + pit files. Once done, then CONNECT your phone to the usb port of your computer.
Hope it's okay.
Edit: Let's hope that it is the computer usb drivers are corrupted. Alterntively, if you still can't do it, try it on another pc.
Nope. I was rebooting it to flash XXJPC to it, but couldnt do so because it was saying that USB message and wouldnt detect it. So I went into recovery, did a factory reset, and now it wont boot.
Another computer does the same thing *tears*
*BUMP*
Lets try a different route. I will pay a generous sum of money to anyone who offers to and does manage to fix this for me?
rick, looking at this, if your usb is not recognised, it is either the pc or the phone usb port might be damaged.
if it is a hardware issue, then use the bounty to get it fix.
I was at that same point with my vibrant. After failed attempts of getting into download mode using buttons, here's what I did.
Download and install samsung usb drivers and android sdk.
Plug into the computer and use adb to get into download mode (adb reboot download).
Then flash with odin.
Doing that worked for me when nothing else would. Try it ?

I can get into download mode just fine.....my pc just doesnt recognize the usb device. tried 3 differente pc's, 2 running win7 and one running xp.
Did you install usb drivers on each of the machines?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
I installed the samsung USB driver executable. and I also tried to use those drivers that it installs to manually update the "unknown USB device" in device manager, but they won't take.
Try uninstalling all drivers, then stick a MicroSD in your phone before plugging it into the usb.
Assuming you have Samsung Kies in your PC, try to upgrade it at 1.5.1.10074_45.
How long do you wait the boot?? The first boot after flash is very long, wait at least 5 minutes with flashing "S".
I did not just flash anything. My phone got really hot and laggy (as I was using it while charging it via USB port) and so I rebooted phone in an attempt to resolve the lag. when I did, it would not go past the WHITE Samsung Galaxy S I9000 screen, does not get to the flashing S screen.

if i understood you correctly, you have two separate problems:
a) your phone does not boot up
b) your phone is not recognized by any computer when plugged in
could be a coincidence, but probably is not. i'm guessing your bootloader got screwed up somehow. if it is a coincidence, it could be that your usb port on the phone is effed, or your usb cable is dead. try first using a different cable and see if your phone can be recognized by any computer. perhaps then you can go into download mode and reflash.
also, have a look at this post, might help you (although, if your usb is effed, there's not much point in trying any solution that involves your phone being connected to a computer): http://androidforums.com/780720-post3.html
EDIT: also, have your tried the obvious stuff, like pulling battery?
I ve seen many threads with the white screen problem ... it has in most cases been the drivers ... you desinstall all drivers from pc using Kies option for resinstall the drivers ... then you pull the battery off few sec (give it a min or two) then you get to download mode and you flash the beast ... dont connect your phone before launching odin or else it will not be recognized ...
for the few other people who didn't manage to fix it ... it was a hardware failure
That post you linked, is worth a try. But its for a motorola.....Where do I get my SGS bootloader to use instead?
ohh you were implying to try to use the motorola usb drivers?

I never said anything about a white screen. and I am not uneducated on flashing SGS, or using Odin. Far from it. My phone was first showing USB symbol when it wasnt plugged into USB port, then phone started running really hot while charging and got really bloated like it was overheating. So I rebooted and its now force closing at the first boot animation. I can get into download mode and recovery, but will not recognize in any of the 3 computers all running different versions of windows on them, with either of my USB cables that I tried.
Hello!
I did a root with odin on my device many time ago, it was successfull. But after that, when I plug the USB in the computer, it only charges. It wasn't important for me, because my device was rooted.
But nowadays I tried to update to 4.4.2 from 4.1.2, so I thought that if I wipe cache and data the USB will work again... but no, so I thought: "maybe if I unroot...", and now I have a gt-i8190n without root and with an USB that only charges.
I tried to update from SD, but the result is: "signature verification failed".
I can get in download mode, but my computer doesn't recognize the device (tried in other computers, and with other cables).
So, here is my question: Will a JIG USB solve anything?
Thanks

How can I disable signature verification? my recovery is a 3e WITHOUT modify. And remember, no root and no USB connection (nobody said was going to be easy).
PD: English isn’t my first language, so please excuse any mistakes, I'm spaniard.

I've tried many files (I can take the microSD and load files in the computer). But when I start the recovery mode and select external storage, it seems to work, until it arrives to that signature message.
Yes, my i8190n is working as good as Spain in the world cup.

I think you need to install the USB drivers for your s3 mini.
If you use TWRP as recovery then boot to recovery > settings > uncheck "Zip signature verification" then you will not again get a failed message.
Do a nandroid backup before you start flashing

The drivers are correctly installed, because the first time I rooted I had no problem, and after it, I have plugged another device (an i8190n, too) and the computer recognizes it without any problem.
I have a 3e recovery, so I can't uncheck "Zip signature verification".
May I start to look for a jig USB?

No wonder why it fails 3e recovery is the stock recovery from s3 mini. You can only flash signed zip from Samsung. You need a custom recovery for flashing custom ROMs if you still have root access then download from play store "ROM Manager" and install CWM recovery or download "[ROOT] Rashr - Flash Tool" for flash CWM or TWRP recovery.

Put the phone in download mode and flash twrp in odin. It's the only way to put a new recovery there without root already.
Otherwise root it, and then flash recovery with rommanager or other similar app.

Even when you put your phone in download mode and then connect the cable?
If so, same thing will probably happen with a USB jig. They are only to force the phone to DL mode. You still have to connect it after that..
How can you tell that it charges in download mode? There is no icons for that.

Yes, when I connect the cable Odin doesn't recognize it, so I supose that only charges (it's true, perhaps it doesn't do it, there isn't any icon). It's supposed when I conncet the phone to the computer, it should pop up the "new storage" (with Odin closed), but it doesn't, only charges.
I want try USB jig, because I have read that it will put the counter to 0 (hoping is this the problem)

Counter is not set to 0 with usb jig on this device. We use triangle away for that.
If you got Kies installed, then uninstall it and install samsung drivers only.
See if there's dust in the phones usb. Take some thin plastic, but be gentle.
Just a few ideas but you've probably tried it all.

not working yet
my USB JIG has arrived and I have tried it... and still doesn't work. Yes, it starts the download mode, but when I plug the USB to try something, the computer (ODIN) doesn't do anything. I have tried with my wife's phone and it works, it's a i 8190n, too.
I'm not going to try anything more, YOU WIN THIS TIME i8190n!
Hi, I have the same problem with my GT-8190, but it happens after my phone drop onto water..
charging is work, but it say "USB device Not Recognized" when I try to connect with PC..
now i want back to stock rom, but I can't do it if my phone not recognized to PC.
Do you have an idea how to flash official stock rom without PC(Odin)?
Sorry for my English
Hello to all,
I would like to install a custom ROM but unfortunately my phone doesn't want to enter in flash mode! Once switched off, I plug it to my computer while keeping vol down button pressed but instead of entering in flash mode, it displays the battery charging icon.
I hard reset the phone but the problem still remains. Any idea.
Thanks, have a nice day!
My guess is either the USB cable (did you use the OEM cable?) or the drivers (does windows recognize your phone?). Removing the SD card or first entering recovery were suggested earlier (http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-l/help/update-volume-connect-doesnt-t2613733). But more experiences Z3c owners may have better ideas...

Using flashtool:
Turn phone off completely.
Start flashtool, choose flashmode and choose which firmware you are going to use. Tick Exclude TA.. Click on flash.
It will start preparing the build and after a few seconds it will ask you to connect the phone.
Plug the phone in while holding volume down, as soon as flashtool starts doing something, you can let go.
If you don't know how to use flashtool then I urge caution, Sony's aren't like flashing a Samsung, it is actually possible to brick your phone with flashtool. There are lots of questions on 'how do I fix my phone?' in this Q&A thread from people who didn't read up on what they were doing.
Recommend you read bilboa1's great guide on what to do, starting with backing up your TA partition..
Thanks for your answers but I think the mini usb from my phone must be dead.
About Flashtool, I can't use it because I can't go into Flash mode! Moreover, my phone is not recognized by windows. I tried with several usb cables and computers when I plug it, I don't have any MTP or PTP choice, it can only charge..
On Windows 10, devices is not recognized and Window 7 see it as a 5880!
And I tried to remove SD and SIM cards..

If the USB lead was dead you wouldn't get the charging icon on your phone.
Have you installed the Sony drivers.
You also need to run exe in the Drivers folder within Flashtool, to make sure you have correct flashomde drivers available. Installing these drivers is very difficult in Windows 10 and it require restarting the machine in safe mode, and going into the advanced settings to disable driver signature checking, this how to video is for windows 8, but you'll get the idea
Have you installed ADB?
Sonys PC Companion should set you up with the correct connection to your PC
Have you tried other USB cables?

Yes, I've installed PC Companion, adb drivers but nothing appears when I use command "adb devices". I've also installed flashtools drivers but deactivating drivers signatures in Windows. But when I try to flash, flashtool ask me to turn my device in flash mode (switch off then volume down + power) but I can't do that.
I've tried several usb cables. Some are charging my devices, some are aren't but none of them allows me to data transfer!
I've also tried to force MTP or PTP usb transfer in developper option, it doesn't work more..

Do you have any warranty on your phone, you could be right that the usb socket is damaged somehow, but it's strange that you can still get a charge through it.
Your only chance at moving to a custom rom change is flashfire
This should let you flash a rom without recovery.
Edit: Flashmode is just holding down just - volume button, not volume+power
Obviously your chances of rescuing a failed install are going to almost zero without recovery and flashtool, so be very very careful about what you try and flash in flashfire. Read up completely that the rom you want to flash is going to work pushed on top of whatever you are running at the moment.
For anyone who might be interested, sometimes you have to try a USB 2.0 port or just a different port. I had the same problem while using a usb 3 port, switched to 2.0 worked like a charm.
Try to open the back of the phone and removing/unplugging the battery wait 5 seconds and then put it in again. Then try holding down the volume down button while you connect a usb cable.

I'm in a big predicament. A few weeks ago I installed the MOAR ROM on my Note 5. After installing this ROM I was no longer able to connect my phone to PC. I tried a Windows 8 PC which says I have an unrecognized USB device plugged in. I tried going into Developer settings to set USB mode to MTP but the option didn't exist. I had all USB drivers installed as well. My wife's phone is recognized no problem. When plugging the phone into my linux machine absolutely nothing happened. It used to show the phone in the left navigation panel in my window manager but after installing MOAR ROM it was no longer detected.
Anyway, today I was trying to play Cartoon Wars 3 and since my phone is rooted it wouldn't let me play. I decided to go into the Super User app and disable it to see if the game would work and it didn't. When I went to re-enable the app it said installation failed and asked me to reboot. I clicked reboot and was sent into a boot loop. I thought okay no big deal, I'll just restore a backup in TWRP. When I go to restore the backup and select the backup file it asks which partitions to restore, but there are no boxes to check. It usually has options like system and data but now it's just blank. I tried a factory reset and I'm still in a bootloop. I'm at a complete loss. I don't know what else to do. I've tried download mode and everything but no matter what I do my phone isn't detected by my pc.
I appreciate any help. I don't know what to do. I'm out of a phone right now and don't have a backup. Not to mention I'm in between jobs right now and can't afford a new one right now.
Just flash a stock rom from sammobile.com
Pre req:
*Odin(any vers)
*Stock rom
Steps
*Extract the downloaded stock rom in your PC
*In twrp wipe everything except internal, then boot in to download mode.
*Once in download mode, connect your phone to your pc, then open Odin.
*In Odin, check the "AP" section and locate the downloaded stock rom(the extracted one)
*Hit start.
Hpe that helps

Thank you for your reply but it seems you didn't read my post. My phone is not recognized by any pc.
What is the terminal command to restore a backup? That's pretty much my last ditch effort.
Well I broke my recovery so I'm screwed. I contacted Samsung and they said they would service it for free. Wish me luck.
What would cause the phone to stop being recognized by the PC? I narrowed it down to the MTP software or the micro usb charge port. My Windows computer says Device Descriptor Request Failed. Linux box does nothing. No USB devices are listed when I run lsblk.

when your phone is in download mode,it doesn't work to connect it with samsung kies on your pc?
You could try using the Kies software to reload the stock firmware. Here's an overview of what to do:
- if you don't already have the Kies software installed on your PC, download it (just search Google) and install it. The first time it runs it'll update itself to the latest version so make sure you run it once before proceeding.
- put your phone in Download mode: with the phone completely off, press and hold the Volume Down and Home and Power buttons simultaneously, and release them all when you see the Samsung splash screen
- connect the phone to your PC with the USB cable that came with the phone
-- if you've never had the phone connected to your Windows-based computer before, you'll see messages about installing drivers, etc - just wait until this is done (may take 5 or 10 minutes) [I don't know what happens if you have a Mac - it probably just works]
- in the Kies software, select the second item in the Tools menu and just follow the prompts to enter the model number (in CAPS) and IMEI/Serial Number (both found under the battery - it's ok to remove the battery at this point)
- the Kies software should start downloading the correct firmware for your phone from the Internet; once that's done (depending on your Internet connection speed) it'll begin downloading that to the phone (this probably takes 10 minutes or so)

Kies doesn't work either. I already tried that. When I hook up the phone It says "Device Descriptor Request Failed". It used to connect to my computers until I put MOAR ROM on the phone. Since then it stopped being recognized by my computers. There's either something wrong with the connection or something got corrupted.

What have you already tried?
- are you sure you're using a data cable and not a charging-only cable?
- have you tried a different computer?
- have you installed the Kies software?
- what does Device Manager show when the phone is connected?
- assuming that the phone is working normally, does the phone show anything when you connect it?
- do you have try windows 8 or 10?
can be you found a solution in this forum

I've tried 4 different cables. My wife's S5 works perfectly fine on all computers. I have tried in Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10. I've also tried in Linux Mint. It used to work until I installed MOAR Rom. Windows says Device Descriptor Request Failed. Linux doesn't do anything when hooked up. lsblk doesn't show the device either.
I have a bit of an update. Apparently something happened with all my data cables. I hooked up my wife's phone the other day and I was all of a sudden receiving the same error as the note 5. I went out and bought a new data cable and now her phone connects again. I'm waiting for the Note 5 to charge up so I can try Odin. I'll post back my results.
I apologize to those who told me it was the cable. I just didn't see that it was conceivable that all 4 of my data cables were all of a sudden damaged. Never underestimate the ability of children to destroy every working cable you own.
Well I'm still getting the error. I have some usb cables coming in the mail so once i try those out I'll get back to everyone.

Were you able to fix your issue. I have the same issue. Note 5 N9208, I can get into Recovery (TWRP) and Download mode, but can not boot. The USB connection is showing USB Device Descriptor failed. I have tried 5 different cables and Windows 7/10 Ubuntu and cant get the phone to show up on the PC. I also have changed the USB port of the phone. Any insight would be helpful.

For the second time, did you put the phone into download mode? Odin isn't going to "see" it if it isn't in download mode.
I go into download mode and odin doesn't see. my computer doesn't recognize the phone at all. I want to know how to get computer to recognize that phone is connected so I can run odin or hard push file to phone.

Like @cwhiatt is saying, are you certain you're in download mode - by pressing and holding volume down + home + power? If you're in TWRP, that's recovery mode, not download. Just want to make sure that's not the issue here.
In download mode there should be a blue/green screen that says "Downloading... Do not turn off target".

Have you tried other cables? Other ports? Other computers?
some usb cables are for power only while others do data if it has just a lightning bolt on it, that's a charger if it has the universal usb logo that's data cable.
Your problem is fixed ?
