There is a thread in Moto G section where OP mentions steps to apply OTA updates manually on the rooted+xposed device. How much viable it is in case of MotoX?

I have a Xt1095 PE Moto X. Can anyone clarify that if I have an unlocked bootloader and have rooted my phone if I will indeed receive the OTA for Lollipop and if it will install without issue? I haven't received any system update notifications nor when I check through the settings page, it states that I am up to date with KitKat. I don't mind waiting if I know I will receive it but I am not, I will manually flash it via the guide in the other thread.

Won't work. You have to be on stock. Reflash the factory images. Then sideload the ota. There are a bunch of guides.

Thank you very much sir. I figured this was the case but couldn't find any definitive post.
I think I'm in the same boat. Mine came with the boot loader already unlocked and system rooted. My recovery is stock.
Will this prevent the ota update?

Hi all, it's with great delight that I managed to get Lollipop on my Moto G thanks to the amazing XDA forums
So my problem started that I couldn't install the Lollipop OTA update because I had TWRP. I found the stock 4.4.4 image for the Moto G 2014 and followed instructions to flash everything from boot.img to recovery.img. After my phone was now in "stock" I was able to install the OTA update.
Now my question is: could I have just flashed the single stock file "recovery.img" and achieved the same effect? That would remove TWRP wouldn't it? Allowing for the OTA update to just work?
(asking because I don't want to have to go through all this again in the future as I'll have forgotten!)

Sorry if the title is confusing. As autoprime warns here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61672737&postcount=622, we should not be taking any OTA updates as they may limit our rooting ability in the future. My G4 was updating at the counter as he processed my info, and it currently sits at H81110h. Is this stock? Or is this an OTA updated version? If it's an update, do we have a method in place to roll back to H810 so I can then block out any OTA's? Thanks in advanced everyone!
You can't stop OTA with T-Mobile’s G4... It automatically does it regardless of state of phone or battery.
so yeah I'm sure you got the latest version.

Finally, the Moto G gets the August security patch updates. Problem is, my phone is rooted via twrp and I'm not sure if the update 1: won't work at all and 2: unroots my phone which I don't want.
I've heard FlashFire may work, but again I'm still unsure.
Has anyone been able to solve this?
Is it possible to downgrade the Android version from 5.1 to 4.4.4 on my Moto X Gen 2 (XT1097)? If so, what are the steps?

It should be possible if the bootloader is unlocked but see this thread.
[WARNING] Do NOT Downgrade Your Bootloader or Partition Table - You Risk Bricking!!!
BEFORE YOU COMMENT ON THIS THREAD - PLEASE READ THIS POST AND UNDERSTAND WHAT THE DIFFERENCE IS BETWEEN THE BOOTLOADER, PARTITION TABLE, SYSTEM AND KERNEL/RAMDISK!!!! This post is not about downgrading from lollipop to kit kat in general. It is...

Edit: If you are able to downgrade, do not allow OTA update,
that will brick the device.
Probably not much risk of an OTA anymore though.
Moto likely has turned removed any OTAs from update servers.

I do not plan on updating it, so that's not a concern. But how can I downgrade it?
