Back to stock - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Where can I find stock XT1096 5.1 signed images? I have my bootloader unlocked and I'd like to essentially factory reset my device. I still need/want the bootloader unlocked and I want the ability to root and everything. I just wanted to experiment with android pay and see what is causing it not to work at the moment.
What is the best course of action to start fresh? I'm familiar with flashing images on nexus devices if that is an option.

[Q] relocking bootloader?

I am on stock just unlocked bootloader and rooted. Will simply relocking bootloader and unrooting help to get updates?or I need to reflash stock Rom?
I am not sure about this, but the only reason you can't do OTA's with the bootloader unlocked is because the unlocking procedure deletes some of the built-in apps in HTC Sense. The phone will check for these apps when it tries to update and fail if they are not present. There is a thread somewhere in XDA which tries to solve this issue of apps being deleted when unlocking the bootloader.
You have to flash stock Rom, stock recovery, then relock to receive OTAs. At least that has been the case in all other HTC phones. The HTC one might be different since a couple of apps that come with the phone are not in the system partition and get wiped when you unlock the bootloader.

OT: The removed apps can be reinstalled here.

Well I havent flashed any other Rom. Just wondering if after unlocking bootloader some apps disappear, does that mean I need to reflash stock Rom. Don't think that simply relocking bootloader will bring them apps back. Hope someone can confirm that
When you unlock the data partition is wiped. Some of the apps that the ota looks for are in that partition. So you either have to flash a stock Rom or restore those missing apps before you relock.

Granted, I'm basing this on the HTC Droid Incredible, nearly a three year old phone, but with us you just have to have the standard HTC apps that it checks for, and the stock recovery to flash it. You could keep the bootloader unlocked, since the unlocked bootloader can take the same commands as the locked one, it just doesn't check for signatures. Again, this is based on a different device, so it may or may not work.

Unlock BL on Sprint Moto X

I'm considering unlocking my bootloader through Motorola. Other than voiding my warranty, is there any reason I shouldn't do it? What are your thoughts?

That's the only negative reason...... warranty. Other then once you start messing with the system, it will break being able update via the OTA's. SO..... I would recommend doing a backup after unlocking the bootloader, flashing recovery, and the first boot up. Therefore you'll have a backup of 100% stock not midified. Then as long as custom recoveries will flash the OTA's, you can always have a quicke easy way to upgrade. Unlocking the bootloader also wipes everything. That's all I got.

I think he meant you are able to flash the "zip" updates (via custom recovery).
Afaik, when you use a custom recovery, you should not take an update via OTA, or else your phone will boot loop.

Unlocking your bootloader shouldn't affect your ability to take OTAs. Rooting or installing a custom recovery certainly might. But just unlocking the bootloader without then installing a custom recovery or rooting isn't very common. Most folks unlock the bootloader for one or both of those reasons.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2446515 seems to have a lot of good info on getting a moto x back to stock, at which point you should be able to take an OTA. I've never used RSD Lite, just done various combinations of fastboot and clockworkmod/twrp (on other phones), but it appears either approach can work - which makes sense since RSD Lite seems to use fastboot behind the scenes.

Request: modified userdata.img for 60.16 bootloader

I'm currently in the process of getting an xt1095 taken care of through warranty, but I want to fix it myself first if I can. This phone is locked out due to android device protection - android 5.1 won't let me log into the phone to change settings. I could unlock the bootloader to load an older system image that doesn't have android device protection, but I need to get into the phone first to set the OEM Unlock option. From what I can tell, the settings for android should be in userdata.img. Can someone post a userdata.img file that was created using the 60.16 bootloader and have the dev options (to include usb on and oem unlock on) set? If so, I would like to try to flash that and see if I can then unlock this phone.
Thanks!
If I understand correctly, you wouldn't be able to flash any images without an unlocked bootloader, right?
First off, nobody do it. If you do he will have access to your information and accounts.
Second it won't work, because it won't be signed by motorola so it would fail to flash on a locked bootloader anyway.

You can flash factory images, but you shouldn't be able to flash a userdata.img since that isn't part of the stock image.
But I'm not understanding how you are locked out of your own phone here. Are you not able to log in to one of the accounts you've used on your device before? If you've reset your password recently you may need to wait 72 hours to get signed back in but that should certainly be quicker than sending it in for a warranty claim.

No, his problem is that he bought the phone on ebay used and the previous owner's account is on it and can't be removed without the previous owner's password. There is nothing that he can personally do.

Ah, I didn't understand that from the original post. I was briefly locked out myself and it turned out it was due to a password reset.

No, you can't. If you are on 5.1 with a locked bootloader, kingroot, mofo, nor sunshine work. There is no way for you to root, flash custom roms, nor unlock your bootloader.
Mofo, kingroot, and sunshine only work for 4.4.4 or 5.0.
You are currently stuck, sorry.

My device locked bootloader, OK!
But I will back to 5.0 firmware. I will use fastboot mode. Only flash ---> system.img_sparsechunk1 , 2 , 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
False?

False, with the bootloader locked, it does not allow you to downgrade to 5.0 nor 4.4.4. The only thing it let's you do is flash the same 5.1 image, it prevents going back to old versions unless you have an unlocked bootloader.
So no unlocked bootloader = no downgrade, no root, no mofo, no sunshine. There is no way to do it currently.
Same problem with you, I've tried but cannot downgrade, cannot root, cannot use sunshine to unlock.
So im waiting for the first thing's first-----a way to root 5.1 on XT1096.

Absolutely. A bad situation. Waiting
Idk, i've been using mofo with my xt1096 even after i updated to 5.1 although i was originally on 5.0 when i first started using it. i thought it was possible. first, just check with mofoverify to see if mofo will work. if it does, then buy mofo and flash the rooted 5.1 mofo image and then use sunshine.
Sent from my XT1096 using Tapatalk
The problem is that they have the 5.1 bootloader which prevents mofo from working. You are using 5.1 system and kernel on a 5.0 bootloader which is why mofo works for you. They can't downgrade the bootloader... Which means no mofo.
Sent from my XT1095 using Tapatalk
oh ok, thanks for clearing it up.
Sent from my XT1096 using Tapatalk
I think someone should report if they have actually tried downgrading to 5.0 from 5.1 ota and keeping the 60.16 bootloader. Can someone more knowledgeable chime in and stop me before I try this? It seems like the most that would happen is a bootloop, which can be fixed by flashing the 5.1 ota files via Motorola device manager.. Just do not flash motoboot.bin or gpt.bin just edit the batch file and remove those two lines. Someone try and see if we can indeed use that as a path to bl unlock.
It won't bootloop. It just straight up will fail to flash saying that you can't downgrade. You can only downgrade after you have an unlocked bootloader.

No. The pure edition does not use nor support CDMA. It won't be able to work at all with verizon's network.

I'm using it in europe...I don't need cdma here so I don't care if it loses that functionality.

I have 5.1, it's not rooted or unlocked. It is a verizon device but no simlock, i'm using it in vodafone, it works in all gsm bands including 4g.
I really like it and I want the 6.0 update if ever possible .

Alright, currently it is impossible to root or unlock the bootloader on the xt1096 running 5.1... Which means it is impossible to convert to xt1095 and impossible to use custom roms. So for the moment you will not be able to get 6.0. Sorry.

Hello, I have a similar case. I am also from Europe and using the XT1096 but I have not yet upgraded to 5.1. I am currently on 5.0. What are my options and can I convert it to XT1095 so, I can later receive the Marshmallow OTA update? Thanks!

Nexus 6 AT&T - Factory images, fast access to OTA?

All,
I have a Nexus 6 from AT&T with all the AT&T goodies (boot-up sound from hell etc). I have been thinking about rooting the phone, wiping the OEM partition, unlocking the boot loader and flashing the factory images.
If I then relock the boot loader and run my device on the factory image, will I have faster access to OTA updates or I am still at AT&T's mercy? AFAIK no OTA yet for LMY48W.

I don't know what you would be accomplishing here? These steps make little to no sense...
You can't root first without a unlocked bootloader.
Locked bootloader does not have anything to do with getting updates.
If you flashing factory image, why not just flash the updated one you are hoping to get ota?
Why would you root here? If you are immediately wiping system, you would only be installing root to never use it, the delete it?
What would ANY of that accomplish if you flash back to the same factory image, leave it stock and lock bootloader?
And finally, locking your bootloader only really makes it impossible to fix should something go wrong. Real bad idea.
Spend some time reading through the stickies with regards to rooting, fastboot, recovery, ect... You seem very far off in your understanding.
I might have screwed up the order of the steps. Objective was
1. Validate if running a factory image with ATT sim would give me faster OTA updates.
2. If I spend time unlocking/flashing, get rid of the OEM partition.
I am worried aboutdevice security running with an unlocked bootloader, that boot up sound is driving me crazy. I was hoping to relock it.
