Looking for Stable Rom - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I'm just getting sick of the state of the Stock Note 4 rom. I feel like the only time it works properly is when i first bought it and only a short time after that. I need help in locating a Daily Driver Rom. One that can be also used for someone that is not Smartphone savvy. I do not need all the bells and whistles. What I would like is to keep the Wifi Calling. I'm currently running 5.0.1 Baseband COG2.
TYIA

I'd recommend Rapture. I've been on that one for about a week now and no joke, it's the ONLY rom I haven't had a single issue with.

I recommend Dr ketans s6 port been using it for weeks. Great battery life

Stable rom with Wifi Calling and no bells and whistles, Rapture it is

Look no further than Rapture. Tried them all. Smoothest, most stable rom in development. And actively developed also.
I swear that guy doesn't even sleep.? @iB4STiD, you da man

very nice of u to say my friend!! thank u very much!! .. :good:

tekhd rom is the best 10,000 questions and comments cog and dog ready as well a huge customization. super fast @TEKHD

Lots of excellent choices. I've been using Tek's ROMS, and Maximum Ovrdrive. Both are stable, good battery life, and great threads to learn and help become more smart phone savvy too.
There are really nice features too, not sure if you are aware, but screen write off memo now works. Ported from the Note 5. One of the best features of the Note 5.
If you are into headphones, check out Viper4Android. Makes the phone sound like an actually music player, also can make your speaker sound a lot better.
Lots of good themes too in the theme section. Just changing your theme can really make the phone seem like a new toy.
Possibly change your launcher, I love Nova, let's you customize your phone easily, and offers a nicer experience.
All easy options to improve your experience.

I was on tekhds Rom for a long time. And my phone always acted up after weeks of use. Even disabling xposed or dirty flashing the Rom it never got better. Always glitchy don't know why my phone didn't like it but I sticked with it because of DOLBY and viper audio. I flashed rapture 6.0 and I must say phone feels like new again. Absolutely no lag. It's not overflown with tweaks that's what's teks Rom is badass at.

There is no best ROM. It solely depends on your preference.
Cassie's XtraLiteRom was the 1st ROM I flashed with. But it removed too many features which I deemed essential.
Then I flashed to DarkyNote ROM. But I encountered too many bugs.
Finally, I flashed Sheep ROM, and have been using it ever since for 2 weeks.
No bugs as of yet. I like its balance of pure stock and optimizations/tweaks.

i started off with darkrom, had it for 2 days, but it was a bit buggy..
then i moved on to rocket, which was pretty good, except it drained the batt faster than stock :S
i'm now on checkrom, i've had it for a week, and i couldn't be more satisfied.. great battery life, i've gotten up to 40hrs on above moderate usage, good performance, and the kitchen pro app that it comes with is amazing.
I also settled on checkrom for the battery life and stability.

Again you're right.
But in this way ppl can save time, making an idea of pro/cons of some ROM.
Do you never look at the rating or comments about an app to decide wether install it or not or wether it worths to try it?
For ROMs I think this kind of opinion is much more important and useful.

Let's be honest here...there IS a best rom at any given moment. There is very little criteria needed to decide which is best:
1) speed/performance
2) battery life
3) functionality/options
4) theme/aesthetica
1 and 2 are pretty straight forward, 3 doesn't have much budge room either and for 4, some people like loud and colorful cartoons on their phones and others prefer a cleaner, more minimalist look.
I can never understand why so many people dislike this kind of best rom thread. There ate a lot of smart, informed people on here who could offer better insights as to the pros/cons of multiple roms, why discourage this?
I've used every rom in the Dev thread and it its crystal clear to me that rocket rom is far and away the best in all the aforementioned categories. Cassies was ok but too thin, sheep rom was good at first but got swallowed up by the competition. Check rom is good but rocket is better, darky flat out sucked and there its no reason to go into the rest.

Can I help me pick a rom too? I'm reading up on Rocket ROM and Check ROM right now though.
Here's what I need:
1 & 2 - Max / best possible combination.
3 & 4 - I may only need highly-significant, innovative changes that you can judge as sort of.. "something you've been missing" while on stock rom. But then again, I may not have much regard for a specific item so I can probably live without it.
THANKS!!
Tbh, DarkyROM really seems to be buggy. I've read too many bug reports in that thread. I tried the ROM myself, and encountered numerous bugs as well.
I'm going to try Rocket ROM to see if jason370's claims are true.
I think we need some AOSP-based ROMs ASAP.
EDIT:
I've tried CheckROM v2 before, too.
I got random bootloops with AbyssNote v2.8, so I was forced to restore back to Sheep ROM.
Only recently received my shiny new Galaxy Note and the first thing I did was root it, CWM it and get the following ROM installed:
CheckROM Revo NoteHD
The reason I opted for this one is that the ROM Kitchen adds a lot of options for customization which means the tweaks I get are decided by *me* and not a ROM developer. So far I have yet to experience any problems with it and it did allow me to overclock. It even goes as far as letting you switch kernels from the device its self, can't fault that!
So far I'm a happy chap and glad I switched from my old iPhone 4!

I think you're talking about stock ROMs.
I tried romow and rhapsody.... now I'm using rhapsody and I find it very fast and stable.

Running Checkrom on my SGS2 and planning on running the same thing on the galaxy note when i get it this week. its the perfect rom for people who want a stock experience on steroids. Im guessing the note version is basically the same thing.
However, Im kind of shocked about many users reporting bad battery life and laggyness on the note. That was my main problem with most android phones since day 1 and have not had a single issue like that with my sgs2 since ive had it. I was hoping the note would be an improvement over that, I guess i will have to find out.

No issue and no risk with rhapsody... Me too I have only this phone!

I have tried Rocket and currently on CheckRom V3.
My personal experience, Rocket has better battery life. I would get atleast 2 days on Rocket. This was on the older V14 version. eybee has already released v17. For the same amount of usage, CheckRom V3 drains in a day.
If you would like to keep all the samsung apps that come with the stock rom without the hassle of trying to figure out which apps you want and which you don't want, Rocket will be good.
CheckRom has the Samsung apps removed. However you can install them from the Kitchen. I like the Kitchen option in CheckRom. If you are open to customizing your rom a lot, this is a good.
+1 for the [JAN 9][XXKL7][2.3.6][FINAL] CheckROM Revo NoteHD™ V3 its running on Steroids!
+ Kitchen App
+ very smooth with Abyss 3.0
+ lasts more than 2 days on battery with moderate/normal use

Opinions on Best Roms

Hello all
i have just been given a samsung galaxy note and would like to know your opinions on the fastest custom ROMS/Kernals ideally i am interested
in speed and battery life. what experiences have you guys had with modding your galaxy notes ?
any feedback as to your opinions of different ROMS is appreciated
-Cheers lads
The predictable Cyanogen answer with all based on Cyanogen.
Easy to flash, stock, fast, light on the battery, has the cooler stock Android ICS look. CM10 coming 'round the corner with JellyBean.
Not recommended for those that love TouchWiz and things like S-Memo.
Well at first i was scared of flashing CM based roms cuz i thought i.d loose s.memo.....but then i took the plunge n believe me m really happy with it.....

You've got a few S-Pen tuned alternatives, like Papyrus. But the gain in performance and battery is really good when you compare it to TouchWiz ROMs. Adding the fact that IT'S SAFE, meaning you can flash/wipe all you want (the CM team did a WAY better job than Samsung on that) and...the choice is pretty obvious for me, really...
If you're going to look into TouchWiz ROMs, make sure you either choose one with a safe kernel included or flash a safe kernel afterwards (I think speedmod...??? Not really sure though, you'll have to research that)
Im using Criskelo v9 rom with GL- Notecore v8.1 (OC) kernel, everything working as it should and the speed is awesome as far as battery goes ive only been running the kernel a few days and it seems ok. I charge my phone every night so battery life is no issue here.Everbody's usage differs tho, if your after longer battey life i wouldnt opt for an OC kernel.

Actually S-memo and the other sammy apps for the s-pen are better than the likes of papyrus and other apps. So for those who want/need s-memo stick with touchwiz based roms.
you guys can get angry with me but im honest to my heart,...as of now there is no rom that is completely good..im going back to gb
all tw ics roms have one major problem: SCROLLING aint smooth enough( ive tried em all)..they stutter like hell!!
and cm9 roms arent that great for battery life...
cm 10 aint fully functional...
all in all i hate it that samsung has created a wonderful device with awesome specs but totally screwed the software releases throughout...to make it even worse is black clipping!!.. im just irritated with this device, dont feel like owning a premium device...im about to sell it hopefully note 2 is better coz the spen and screen size are unbeatable!!!
Stock ROM is the best.
Hi your best option is to go for a Touchwiz rom which you can highly customize during installation. Chrack's and Criskelo are very good fully customizable rooms. They come with Aroma installation to let you remove a lot of bloat ware before installation.
Touchwiz roms also have the best kernels around. Like Note core and Speed mod. These give a very significant improvement in speed n battery. Of course cyanogen based roms r good. But the prob is u will be lacking some native drivers Samsung has integrated into the roms for the best performance. For ex, divx support is there by default, NTFS file format for SD card can be achieved, better drivers for display n graphics etc.
Touchwiz roms can crush cyanogen roms in benchmarks as well. Cyanogen can seem very smooth and fluid. But with the right launcher (apex or nova) u can easily give the rom a stock ICS feel as well. Hope this helped. Cheers

Fast and Very Light ROM

Hi,
I'm looking for a fast and light ROM. I have a Nexus 4 now so my tablet is pretty much just used for taking notes at University and watching the occasional YouTube video.
I looked and managed to find AOKP M6 Slim, however this seems to be discontinued and as a result, outdated.
If installing a more feature-heavy ROM and removing features is viable, could someone point me in the right direction to do that?
Thanks in advance.
codefireX.
Best ROM available, performance wise.
Still very rich in features and customization. Includes option to turn off nearly all aftermarket customizations and features, besides performance ones.
I highly suggest pairing with motley kernel.

Super close to stock. They're really up on responsible coding. Nothing that goes against AOSP. All about just working.
I usually go in through titanium backup and remove programs I don't need

I like Paranoid Android but you are going to get a different response from everyone. PA runs really smooth for me. It is not as feature filled as a lot of the other roms but gives some nice customization options. PIE control is also really nice as it allows you to take advantage of the entire screen.
The bottom line is that the only way to find the best ROM for you is to do some research and flash a few different ones. Try them for a few days and then switch if you are not pleased/get bored.

Rasbean. But that's the benefit of owning a nexus, you have so many options.
But I'm pretty positive once you flash rasbean, you won't flash anything else. I would advise flashing other roms first and then go to rasbean. You'll notice the difference.

I fell in love with Xylon, it has A TON of features and customizations. I think it borrows (kang) popular features from a lot of ROMs and all the features are optional. Not to mention the ROM is super fast and smooth which I wouldn't expect from A ROM with so many features.
I personally use the custom faux kernel with it, makes the ROM that much slicker, and my battery lasts for an entire day.

The bugs on the Samsung are due to the difficulty obtaining sources from Samsung. No such problem on the Nexus, and CyanogenMod is as stable as stock and you get the extra features to boot.
ALL of the roms for the Nexus 4 are fast because the phone is fast. I doubt anyone could tell the difference without running benchmarks so you should really just try a few and make a choice based on which feature set you like.

You sir are correct. CM10 on Nexus 4 is the best combination of lightweight and customisable so far that I've seen.
This is borderline a "which is the best ROM" thread and we all know how those turn out. Every ROM I've ever seen claims to be "light and fast" either directly or indirectly..
To the OP.. There are piles and piles of people making ROMs and kernels for this phone. It's one of the most active development communites I've seen in ages. Take advantage of it! No one can pick one for you.. Drop by the development forums, read, read, then read some more.. Pick 5 ROMs that sound up your alley and give them a try.. I'd suggest a ROM a week until you find one you are satisfied with.
Goodluck and enjoy your Nexus!
Best part about coming to a Nexus forum is being confused about what ROM to flash. Always so many great ones to choose from. lol.
So damn true, there are so many ROM's from so many great developers you do really get lost even when going through all of the topics.
So the best bet would be to try it for yourself and flash a few ROM's until you find the one you like.
P.S - this phone is so quick so i doubt really anyone can find a difference in performance between Rom's.
Have fun
^ there is a difference but I feel it lies within the individual kernels. I've been testing kernels for about two weeks and find myself always coming back to trinity 97, even with 4.2.2 its smooth and battery life is insane. I've bounced from ROM to ROM and find xylon the smoothest. Once rasbean goes 4.2.2 I'll give it a shot. There are so many Roms and they are all *good. *everyone has their opinions and all the devs here put a lot of work and time in and all deserve the respect they get. As far as a “light" ROM goes slim bean would be the lightest coming in at under 110mb zip file, then you'll need gapps and they have minimal gapps available at around 25mb.

As a rom addict, would you advise me to keep my One?

I have both the S4 and the One in front of me and one of them is going back by tonight. Still torn between the two, whatever, but there is one factor that can make my decision a lot easier. I never keep a stock rom on any phone; I prefer a stock Android experience with some of the extras included in ROMs such as PA and AOKP. From what I am hearing now, flashing non-Sense ROMs on the One takes away almost all of the bells and whistles of owning the device, like BoomSound (average audio quality) and camera quality (at least we have 13 megapixels to compensate in the S4).
For those of you who have flashed some of these early builds, how is it working for you? Do you find using the phone to not be as enjoyable as it was stock?

I flashed PA and CM and 30 minutes later i went back to stock. Battery life on any aosp based rom for me has been terrible and all the features of the stock ROM are awesome. sound quality also deteriorated and got reduced volume on the aosp roms. Also gaming. NOTHING lags on stock rom but on PA and CM games lag like crazy. graphics benchmarks get reduced to like Adreno 225 level... And then since they are still alphas there are a lot of bugs and they aren't really stable. I would go with the HTC One instead of the SGS4 because of how sexy the damn thing is. also how sense is much more tuned and less cluttered up like touchwiz is.

Thanks for the input. I know, the One is just too sexy, but I gotta actually enjoy using it. If the functionality is practically the same as the S4 after flashing a stock rom, I might as well keep the S4. As far as the TouchWiz vs. Sense argument goes, it is irrelevant to me since I would not be keeping either one as soon as there are some stable stock builds available.
Yeah, in your case just keep the S4.
Flash Trickdroid ROM, it's a custom ROM which is also sense based and has good if not better battery life than stock ROM and certainly better than AOSP.
I'm a fan of AOSP ROM's but for the most part the battery life isn't good so I'll stick with Trickdroid

I was in the same boat but stuck with the HTC One. I like it's feel in my hand a lot more which is a big thing for me, comfort>sexy, but both?! Also a lot of devs seem to be including sense in their roms letting us get Zoe+addons from aftermarket roms which keeps the camera viable. I think we'll see more interesting development on the One than on the S4 simply because devs will want to port/improve those features into their roms.

I ran the stock rom for 2 weeks before flashing a custom ROM. I didn't have any sluggish performance with stock, but I do like the custom rom better. I removed all the t-mobile junk. So if anything I got a performance increase.
I wouldn't return this phone, I love it.
Try the Maximus7 6.0 rom.
I came from a TF300 that was fing slow and constant force closes because of the slow IO in it. But it was a stock experience.
I thought I would hate this 'sense'. I like it. I do use a Nova Launcher and I removed the cruft.

Maybe it's me getting older and needing a phone for business and not a toy to tinker with. The one gave me more features and the feel of it in my hand was better. Why not go with something with better features and reliability than with something that has more roms to flash? That's my question to op. Hopefully you can get both with whatever you decide to go with.

Yeah id say Trickdroid is probably the best ROM overall right now for this one, but the choice is yours, if your prepared to sacrifice some battery life for extra features then no problems.
I'm running AOSP on my Nexus 7 and have been for months now but I'm quite content with Trickdroid on my One.
As a ROM addict, both of these phones will easily keep you happy.
However, asking in this forum will yield bias responses. Just like if you were to ask this in the S4 forum, you'll get the majority of answers saying to stick with the S4.

Why do you think I'm having such a hard time? Too bad I can't afford to keep both.

Yeah, of course. Just thought it would be better to get insight from those who have actually had experience with these ROMs. Both communities do seem like they are going to have a load of new things to flash and play with within the next few months.
Sense has gotten to the point (for me), that its features far outweigh anything aosp or aokp offer. Aosp advantage used to be that it was quicker and smoother with more customizations...not the case at all now. I would go as far to say that you actually lose more useful features than you gain by going pure android. I do understand the addiction though...I've had it for years...haha

How often do you change ROMs ?

Just curious on how often you guys change ROMs or how you go about picking your daily driver ?
I have one ROM in particular I use everyday, but I've been on a flashing spree the past several weeks as there are lots of great options. The ROM I am using as my everyday is b/c it does not have any issues/bugs and works 100%. There is another ROM that I really like as well that has more options than my current one, but it has so many bugs and errors that I cannot use it for daily use. I've tried on several occasions, but there were too many errors.
I switch between Chroma and Pure Nexus, both super great ROMs, they have identical update schedules so I do one build chroma, one pure nexus build... I find that Pure Nexus is waaay more stable and has better battery life than Chroma, but Chroma works good with my carrier no matter the kernel. Pure Nexus + stock PN kernel has bugs with my carrier's connection so I flash HellsCore.
Some comments on Reddit (/r/Nexus6 mainly) say that ROMs "deteriorate" and most users switch to stock Google factory images + GravityBox from Xposed or Cataclysm MOD (too sad it died). I will try that soon since I notice lags, bluetooth disconnections, really poor battery life (like 2 hours SOT and 4 hours stand by) in both Chroma and Pure Nexus after a few weeks, using Greenify MM version with Aggresive Doze and the other option I cannot remember. I also have WLD and Amplify.
I stick to one as the main one, snd flash other about once a week.
Use to switch alot just out of curiousity, but lately as I find myself getting older and busier I stick to whats stable and gets the job done with little issues. And for me that's Chroma rom, I've had no issues with it whatsoever since I've been on it for the past 4months.

Been on many roms across a handful of devices and on the N6 I'd stay with stock + Cata mod forever but stock + gravity/xposed gets the job done. Viper sound mod & LMT launcher are always installed too.
So sad that the Cata mod developer was pushed out of XDA by haters. Cata mod was the hands down best thing I've ever used.
switching ROMs.. what's the point? the only times I ever switch ROMs is finding one that suits me. after I find a ROM that suits me, I never switch Roms. what the point of switching ROMs after that? from my experience, I see many "kids" switching Roms, but many adults tend to stay with one ROM.

Even though you find something that already works, variety is always good.....................Just ask Tiger Woods.

variety is great, but not through roms. and what kind of variety? some extra "features" that I'll never use? what the point if that kind of variety? I do find many things to change around, but the roms are all basically the same. sure, some have added other features, or some theming changes. for me, the most important thing is that everything that is in the ROM works properly.
oh, and ask Tiger Woods about his opinion on variety today, it won't be the same answer that you got out of him several years ago..
A few a week before i decide which ROMs I prefer. Then I'll stick with a ROM for 6+ months if it's stable with good battery life and has most of the features I want. Currently using Pure Nexus with ElementalX and don't plan on switching any time soon.

possibly
Been with Pure Nexus ROM for the past 3 months now alongside Hells Core Kernel. Only time to switch ROMS is if it causes battery drain or performance issues. Also, the busier you get whether it be work or college, etc., the less time you have to care about things like this. Kind of what simms said
I don't that much anymore been using croma and Pure for a good while I normally like to do a good clean wipe every so often then I may see what's happening with diff roms but pure is my go to. Now back in the og Evo and s2 days would swap every other day because every rom had its flaws.

That's my exact setup and it's fantastic
I've tried a few different kernels but I like Pure Nexus with hellscore and that's what I use. Pure Nexus with elite kernel is also good...l used to use kernel auditor for hellscore, but I just deleted it and use hellscore right out of the box.
I had the kernel set up from this video I watched and used the settings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLkRAVUnxE4
I undervolted to -35 instead of -25 and dropped a few more settings lower than he had with zero lag. He could have been a little more aggressive in stepping down. Worked great. Good SOT.
