Recovery issues - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So Im at a total loss on this phone. I had a moto e unlocked that everything worked fine on and Im not totally new to working on phones. But this phone has me stumped. I have a unlocked XT1095, that is rooted. I tried to install TWRP on it, I can flash the .img file okay but everytime I reboot the phone to go into the recovery menu option, the phone just goes black and shuts off. I can't get into the recovery at all or any of the other fastboot options. My specs are as follows, Moto X 2nd gen, 5.1, system version is 23.16.3.victara_tmo.tmo.en.US tmo build number, LPE23.32-21.3

Don't reboot the phone after you flash TWRP. Select recovery from fastboot as soon as you flash it.

I just tried that today and it still shuts the phone off. The other odd thing is I tried to do this OTA update that was only a few MB. Once I tried that, it booted into TWRP just fine but into a boot loop. I had to delete the cached update file in order to get it to boot up properly.

Flash 5.1 Stock using Fastboot? [SOLVED]

So I basically flashed a modem.zip file that was for 5.1 on my 4.4.4 Moto X. Yup, I'm dumb, I know.
So now I'm stuck on boot loops and I'm trying to figure out how to flash the stock firmware using Fastboot.
I can put my phone in fastboot mode but as soon as I hit recovery to go to TWRP it just boot loops so Recovery is not an option for me. Any help or useful links would help. Thanks!
EDIT: I was finally able to get into TWRP. I wiped Cache and Dalvik Cache and everything returned to normal.
If your bootloader unlocked.... You should be able to just flash the appropriate modem using fastboot. Or flash all of 5.1 via fastboot or rsd lite

Flashing TWRP Does Not Take

Tried to install TWRP on my XT1097. The bootloader is unlocked and I'm running stock Marshmallow (XT1095). When I flash in the bootloader, it says SUCCESS, but when I boot into recovery, I get the dead Android and No Command. Is there something resetting the recovery or could it be that I didn't flash the partition when I upgraded to 6? I tried both fastboot and mfastboot. Same result. Thanks for the help.

After you flash twrp don't reboot. Open recovery right away.
If you reboot before starting twrp the old recovery comes back.

Thanks. That worked.

Moto X 2014 Pure Turns Off When Selecting Recovery in Bootloader

I have a Moto X 2014 Pure that I was trying to root. I said to myself, why not install TWRP? So I flashed TWRP, it gave me 'mismatched partition sizes (recovery)', but according to some other sources, that was normal. I tried to reboot into recovery, it gave me the stock recovery. I said, huh, weird, I'll flash it again. And after that, I was unable to get into recovery at all. Bootloader still works, and the phone can still boot normally, it just appears that the recovery is GONE. If I select "Recovery" from bootloader, it just turns off (seems to at least). I am running Marshmallow 6.0 on the Moto X, and I'm having a hard time finding a stock recovery for it. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

The mismatch is normal because you're flashing a non-stock recovery. Are you using only the volume rocker in bootloader mode? Is your bootloader unlocked?
Get stock firmware from here:
https://firmware.center:8081/firmware/Motorola/
Make sure you don't downgrade.
I am only using the volume rocker in bootloader, which is unlock. I managed to root my phone by temporarily booting into TWRP and installing the ZIP files. However, I still don't seem to have a recovery. At this point, I really don't need one, but I will try that firmware.

Recovery (TW) broken

So I've messed up recovery on my phone, I should add it works completely fine right now.
Previously I've rooted it and installed TeamWin onto it. One day last year, Android was bugging me to update. I clicked yes and didn't realise it won't update because I've rooted and installed TeamWinReceoveryProject (TWRP). So the update failed and I thought nothing of it.
So the other day I wanted to make a backup of my phone and tried to get into TWRP only I go into fastboot now and when I select recovery it just reboots. Anyway I can fix this so I have TWRP back?

Did you tried just flash recovery again?

Is your phone still rooted? If so just download "rashr-flash tool" by Aschot Mkrtchyan from the play store and use this app to flash the TWRP img file.

Unlocking Bootloader from Flashboot?

I was flashing the new OTA from adb, and it failed at 70%.
Stock image, locked bootloader, not TWRP, not rooted
Now on bootup, I see nothing but the google logo.
I can reboot to bootloader/recovery mode, but can't flash anything since I hadn't unlocked the bootloader. Any way to proceed? Can I flash another bootloader that will let me unlock from fastboot?
Bootloader can only be unlocked after allowing it in the developers options. Perhaps you can boot into TWRP from the bootloader, fastboot boot xxx. Where xxx is the name of the TWRP IMG. You may be able to side load the OTA that way and flash it. I'm not 100% sure of that though.

How do I push TWRP to the device? I can't flash recovery (it's still stock).
You don't. If you've got fastboot working, just type, fastboot boot (the name of the TWRP IMG) and it should boot on the device.

I was getting errors when trying to boot from the twrp image. But I figured out that I can boot to recovery, select update from adb, and get adb running again.
I was able to reflash the OTA, looks like it's working now.
I guess the lesson for today is that I should just leave the bootloader unlocked.
Thanks for the help
Excellent!

That's the 1st commandment! Leave the bootloader unlocked.
