I just got a notice that there's a new software update available on my S6 Edge. Clicking the "Learn more online" link, it states this:
"The following improvement has been made:
- Android security patches."
That's it. Then it goes into detail to describe what that means. It seems a LOT of devices are affected, and I can't find any mention of it anywhere on here nor Googling for it. Anyone know what this is? I don't recall hearing of any security issues -- could it be Marshmallow maybe?
I've been wanting root for a while, but missed out on that train when I upgraded to 5.1.1 (G925VVRU3BOG5) -- anyone know if this new version any easier to root?

The Galaxy S6 (all variants) will receive monthly software updates focused on patching security flaws no matter how minor.
There is no clue as to when (or even if )a new root exploit will be found.
How root works is the security of the device gets breached.
Since most security flaws get patched monthly, do not begin to think these updates will make root easier.

Interesting. I've had my S6 Edge since it first came out, but have only received a select few updates. Good to know though.

So am I correct in thinking that staying where I am now is a better idea than updating if my aim is to (hopefully) root this phone at some point? It sounds like this update in particular isn't so much for features as it is fixing potential exploits.

This update is specifically for patching security vulnerabilities that could be exploited.
I can't say for sure, but I doubt that these updates are patching root exploits.
If I were in your shoes I would just take the OTA.
Probably the stage fright security patch, should download the stage fright app and see whether your phone is safe or not XD.

The stagefright bug was patched in the update to 5.1.1
It would be redundant for such patch to be mentioned in this update

This is incorrect. They patched stagefright, but the fix was rushed and didn't prevent all methods of exploit. I'm hoping this 2nd update closes the remaining CVE.

I had overlooked that tiny detail. Yes, the supposed fix for the stagefright bug was only partially fixed last month because there are six parts to it. Thanks again for the correction

Like was said earlier in this thread, as well as many others, the root exploit was patched awhile ago.
This build has no root; there is no knowing if or when a new exploit will be found.

It seems that many 925A'ers are not leaving this forum to find out that YES, we have root! The unnecessary questions, comments, doubts are starting to pile up, so maybe this is the best way to ensure everyone knows that YES (again), we have root. If that won't drive you crazy, it should at least get you warned for not following forum rules and searching instead of posting for no reason..... If that user searched, they would have easily found this thread showing you exactly how to root the 925A!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3103016
To be 110% clear....... this was developed by @idler1984, NOT me, so thank them - all credit goes to them, I'm just trying to keep the 925A forum cleared up if at all possible!
ENJOY!
EDIT - and because someone asked........ Root has been achieved for both OCE and the 5.13.15 OE2 update
EDIT 2 - and because more people can't read, you CANNOT root anything past May 15th builds, so none of the OF_ updates, nothing that comes out after May 15th, so don't update unless you want to lose root! The information is all there in the thread linked above, if you don't read, you don't have anyone to blame but yourself!
Good job. Was thinking of doing the same.
omg thank you. by the way that first quote was mine sorry. and i did search to no avail. thanks a bunch for clearing this up. and ill try to be more thorough with my search next time.

Okay, that makes sense then, OC9 instead of what I thought you were talking about, "OE9" which I guess does not exist (yet?)
They skipped that one because OE2 is out and there's no need to get the build in the middle developed, from what I can tell.... I've been wrong before though! Just hit your software update and get OE2 then root that, it has the most updates we're going to see before 5.1.1 comes out next month (still more speculating, but that's an informed guess this time based on lots of reading up on the new Galaxy from across the web)

No, ZV7 is not out yet. But it is in development as indicated by the new RDF.
http://device.sprintpcs.com/LG/LS991-SPRINT/LS991ZV7.rdf
Now I checked a few days ago and this wasn't here. It's also noteworthy that with the H815 getting 6.0 this might be what's coming our way. We saw something similar when ZV8 came out for the G3, it was a different version on the RDF. I'll try and poke the bear, see what I can find out.
In the meantime let the speculation begin!
I wouldn't hold my breath for M --YET-- it's way to soon. Besides inside the rdf file it says 5.1. Probably just additional security updates, and perhaps some additional enhancements like we had with ZV5 & ZV6. I do like your speculation though. ?

With M out already for the global version and it supposedly out in short order afterwards for US... Well, stranger thing have happened.
I just hope the exploits we use to DD the custom ROMs doesn't get patched with 5.1 update, could be a prep for M complete with security fixes. If so I may pass on the update and or M. Just my opinion only time will tell....
OK. G3 is now showing an update ALSO in the works. And what two devices are supposed to get M first for LG?
If that's not M it's a fix that affects them both... Stagefright's already patched so not sure what other big ones are out there.

Wow what a blunt reply. Anyway I have also been probing the far corners of the clearweb for a root on this device. No luck. PingPong root doesn't support it, SRSRoot says that it rooted the phone, but it doesn't actually work. I'm not going to try to flash a rom with odin cause i need to keep the data on it. Lmk if you find anything out. Peace.
I believe the next logical step would be to try reverse-engineering parts of the new kernel and look for exploitable bugs, rather than looking for work done on the subject by other individuals and attempting to classify them as the same thing.

I wouldn't even know where to begin with that, bit outside my technical expertise. Is it something you are familiar with? Or can you point me in the right direction?
Can I downgrade from the PD6 OTA? I am running 100% official. I see there are no tools for rooting 6.0.1, but can I odin down to a version of 5.1.1 that I can root? It's been a while since I have done that, and IIRC sometimes it's impossible to downgrade once you have upgraded. I don't care about Knox or Samsung Pay, losing those is fine.
Thread jacked! Haha
I heard you can, man. Check that 'Root 5.1.1 with a snag' thread that Metalcated started.
I think somebody mentioned you can. Usually you can't - you're right - but I don't think this bootloader was enforcing it. Worse comes to worst it'll just fail to ODIN it and you're stuck. No real risk of bricking. :good:

Maybe like IDA Pro? I love IDA :3
You could probably scope out some good Android disassembly tools if you look.
Maybe checking the AOSP code itself?
Maybe look into the Android system images that you can download with the SDK?
Not sure. A bit out of mine too, but definitely an area of interest.

Will be trying this on my G920A soon. (PD6)
Short answer: No.
Long answer: it's not public yet. I saw many people in other forums talking about a private method that allows them to root G920A 6.0.1 and untethered (unlike the one we have right now for 5.1.1). I do not have the files and I don't know if it's going to be released to the public. I hope one of the insiders leaks it soon because I don't wanna upgrade to 6.0.1 without root.

I was looking at Android exploits and found this: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/project-zero/issues/detail?id=734&redir=1. It says it is a DOS which I have tested on OI5 (crashes the system). But at the bottom it says it can be used for local privilege escalation. I have very limited knowledge of C and C++ so I am asking you guys if it is possible to write some code into the file that will escalate our privelleges to root. File is at the bottom of the site on the link. This would be great for the entire community. Thanks!
CVE Page:https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2016-2062
CVE ID: CVE-2016-2062
This looks promising. I was looking into the Android version update history on AT&T's website for the S5, and found out that, up until now, the patch for this bug hasn't been applied (as all firmware updates are using Kernel version 3.4).
According to one of the comments from the link NavSad posted, "[T]his patch was not applied to all msm branches at the time of the patch release (July 2015) and no security bulletin was issued, so the majority of Android kernels based on 3.4 or 3.10 are still affected despite the patch being available for 6 months."
High hopes and praises to whoever can figure out how to use this exploit to finally root this phone.

Not exactly sure what your asking??
I don't think that you understand the process. Removing the ads means reflashing the entire phone, so any updates that were installed would no longer be there as the images used to reflash do not include any updates.
There was one update that only the amazon version got to make it harder to disable the ads. Both versions of the phone got a July security update pushed but this only works on completely unmodified phones.
The much awaited band 12 update has NOT been released.
Either your source of information is suspect or you are not yet understanding the information. Read carefully in THIS forum to learn what's going on with this phone.

The non prime has not yet received any OTA, only the Prime variant. Non prime still on June security
That's not true. My phone is converted to non-Prime edition and I WAS offered the July security updates. I could not install them because I have twrp, root, and xposed but I was told that an update was available for the non-amazon version. The amazon version of the phone has had TWO updates - the first one to stop turning off the ad server and the second one with the July security updates.

Hmm..
That is what I got after I tried applying the update, just to see what would happen - I knew it wouldn't work with root, twrp, etc. but hoped that I would be able to find the downloaded update file on the phone somewhere. Other people with unmodified phones have reported receiving it. Check near the end of the General Discussion thread - the one that's over 100 pages long.

Your the only one reporting it, that I can find. But hey if they released it great. But the only downloads for OTAs I can find are for the prime. If anyone has an OTA for non prime that updates it from 1.2 please post a link. @ColtonDRG is thinking of merging the July security updates to OEM, but if it's already been released via OTA, someone let him know!! I'm not trying to argue with you, it's just people are getting confused and frustrated already with the different flash methods etc... Don't get me wrong, I would be super stoked if BLU actually supported the non subsidized non prime variant.

I have not received any update. If anyone who has received an update can capture a URL so we can mirror it, that would be super awesome. That said, I still have my doubts about weather such an update exists. Can someone who supposedly has the update tell us their custom build number?

Yes, Colton there was an ota update yesterday. But currently it says "Root has been detected, can not update device". This may be the 4G LTE Update.

Can you post a screenshot to prove this? I'm pretty sure it should attempt to apply an OTA regardless of root (though it will fail if rooted).

Mine Says BLU_R0011UU_12_GENERIC 27-06-2016 14:13
not R0031UU like yours. but running stock rom on amazon 16GB 2GB ram version. wonder if it makes any difference. I know the OTA update hasn't been released yet. its just a "Model" number thing.

Thats just where i modified the build.prop to match model # OTA version check is still R0011UU for OTA updates, but earlier today, i completely reverted to oem stock with factory reset, still no OTA, my OCD made me do it, just to confirm OTAs lol, spent an hour restoring my phone afterwards
Yay, someone else finally got it! No, jloh1963, it wasn't the anticipated band 12 voLTE update, it's just the July security updates. But no one can install it unless they are completely stock and few in this forum probably are.
Colton, it did attempt to apply the update after downloading it and prompting me and, as expected, the update failed. That's why I made that post a week or so ago asking where I might find the failed update. I wanted to save it. But I did a search on the phone and couldn't find anything that looked like it.

It is entirely possible that this FOTA program actually does know how to do gradual rollout like most other programs. I assume that's what's going on here.

I understand. Does anyone know how to capture OTA URLs? If so, can you PLEASE look for the update and capture the URL before applying it?

No, as long as the system, boot image, and recovery aren't altered. Re-run the conversion to make sure if you have any doubts

Yeah I did earlier today, reran conversion via spft and reset/wipe to factory. Ran update check but nothing, so I rooted/installed TWRP and restored my current config. I'll reset and let it sit for a day or two, perhaps its a gradual rollout. Will do my best to grab URL
