Hey All,
I've spent days now scouring the web looking for anyone and anything to root my G920A running G920AUCU3CPD6 (Marshmallow 6.0.1). There is absolutely nothing I could find. I have queried just about every method, and I have several emails out to various developers, sw companies, etc., but nothing yet. Is there anyone out there who can help?

No.
Jeez
Wow what a blunt reply. Anyway I have also been probing the far corners of the clearweb for a root on this device. No luck. PingPong root doesn't support it, SRSRoot says that it rooted the phone, but it doesn't actually work. I'm not going to try to flash a rom with odin cause i need to keep the data on it. Lmk if you find anything out. Peace.
I believe the next logical step would be to try reverse-engineering parts of the new kernel and look for exploitable bugs, rather than looking for work done on the subject by other individuals and attempting to classify them as the same thing.

I don't care about the data, since I lost it already anyways. I would be willing to flash via odin, but didn't find anything useful. Sounds like you may have?

I wouldn't even know where to begin with that, bit outside my technical expertise. Is it something you are familiar with? Or can you point me in the right direction?
Can I downgrade from the PD6 OTA? I am running 100% official. I see there are no tools for rooting 6.0.1, but can I odin down to a version of 5.1.1 that I can root? It's been a while since I have done that, and IIRC sometimes it's impossible to downgrade once you have upgraded. I don't care about Knox or Samsung Pay, losing those is fine.
Thread jacked! Haha
I heard you can, man. Check that 'Root 5.1.1 with a snag' thread that Metalcated started.
I think somebody mentioned you can. Usually you can't - you're right - but I don't think this bootloader was enforcing it. Worse comes to worst it'll just fail to ODIN it and you're stuck. No real risk of bricking. :good:

I mean, a good hex editor would be a start.
Maybe like IDA Pro? I love IDA :3
You could probably scope out some good Android disassembly tools if you look.
Maybe checking the AOSP code itself?
Maybe look into the Android system images that you can download with the SDK?
Not sure. A bit out of mine too, but definitely an area of interest.

Will be trying this on my G920A soon. (PD6)
Short answer: No.
Long answer: it's not public yet. I saw many people in other forums talking about a private method that allows them to root G920A 6.0.1 and untethered (unlike the one we have right now for 5.1.1). I do not have the files and I don't know if it's going to be released to the public. I hope one of the insiders leaks it soon because I don't wanna upgrade to 6.0.1 without root.

I'm getting my z3c on the 1., and I'm very excited.
I have a question though;
How long do you think it'll take before we get root on this phone, to open up for some more advanced functions ? I know no-one can say for sure, but you guys migth take a shot based on your experiences.
This will be my first new phone in years, so I'm not in the loop about how long this usually takes, after a phone comes out.

If we had a recovery, that tool wouldn't even be necessary xP
I'm guessing Doomlord will, in time, come up with something. Doesn't he always...?
Though I do believe we need to find a security hole to even get a recovery working (correct me if I'm wrong here).
EDIT: I've also tried every one-touch root apps and various Windows programs. None of them work ;-;
Damn you, Google, for hiring exploit patchers with such skills!

Having bought all my devices over 6 months after they were released was probably much better for me than I ever realized xD
I'm tinkering with the idea of modding a stock FTF with root and whatnot and flashing it with flashtool. Anyone tried that yet? Or is everyone too busy looking for that one exploit they're unlikely to find?
EDIT: Back to the drawing board. Seems like things have changed a lot since I last took a look at an FTF.

Well considering most people don't want to unlock their bootloaders and miss out on the amazing camera, we can only flash FTFs (Sony-signed software).
(No system/boot write access, so finding an exploit is crucial.)

I am rooted using CHAIN Fire's CF AUTOROOT - the trick is you have to use the Latest ODIN - 3.10.6 I think - here is a link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3109599&d=1420980613
Donf use the ODIN that comes with CF Auto Root unless he has updated it to the one I have linked to here. THis is the only one that works that I know of.
GOOD LUCK

I saw that too but I didn't know what it was and wasn't sure what would happen if I didn't accept it - so I did - maybe I should forget it? What could it be?
I haven't figured it out yet. I denied it until I know what it is. Also has to manually freeze and remove all the Knox crap, SuperSU didn't ask me to disable it...

Yes, it will trip your Knox counter.
That brings me to a question I had, hopefully @Chainfire can answer. ..
After root, supersu didn't ask me to deactivate Knox; why? is it safe to go and freeze or remove all the Knox crap?
Unfortunately I'm waiting until I hear more information on Knox in regards to Samsung Pay. I know Chainfire and others mentioned the possibility of it needing an un-tripped counter, but until we know for sure I'm staying un-rooted (which is killing me).

I think he was saying the logic of 'you never had it, therefore you won't miss it if you don't get it' was stupid. Whereas you were being a little more gracious saying it was 'interesting' logic. In all honesty, it is a ridiculous argument. Of course you will 'miss' features that the phone should include if you lose them due to root. Even if you would not have used the feature, it still is a missing feature, just one you personally do not care about.

Root after Update?
I received the S6 two days ago. It came with Android Ver. 5.0.2 and there was an update available as soon as I activated the phone. I have not yet taken it. Has anyone taken this update and then rooted successfully?
It seems that many 925A'ers are not leaving this forum to find out that YES, we have root! The unnecessary questions, comments, doubts are starting to pile up, so maybe this is the best way to ensure everyone knows that YES (again), we have root. Here are THREE posts from the SAME person in DIFFERENT threads asking the SAME thing:

To be 110% clear....... this was developed by @idler1984, NOT me, so thank them - all credit goes to them, I'm just trying to keep the 925A forum cleared up if at all possible!
ENJOY!
EDIT - and because someone asked........ Root has been achieved for both OCE and the 5.13.15 OE2 update
EDIT 2 - and because more people can't read, you CANNOT root anything past May 15th builds, so none of the OF_ updates, nothing that comes out after May 15th, so don't update unless you want to lose root! The information is all there in the thread linked above, if you don't read, you don't have anyone to blame but yourself!
Good job. Was thinking of doing the same.
omg thank you. by the way that first quote was mine sorry. and i did search to no avail. thanks a bunch for clearing this up. and ill try to be more thorough with my search next time.

Okay, that makes sense then, OC9 instead of what I thought you were talking about, "OE9" which I guess does not exist (yet?)
They skipped that one because OE2 is out and there's no need to get the build in the middle developed, from what I can tell.... I've been wrong before though! Just hit your software update and get OE2 then root that, it has the most updates we're going to see before 5.1.1 comes out next month (still more speculating, but that's an informed guess this time based on lots of reading up on the new Galaxy from across the web)

Kernel built after May 15th (including some 5.0.2 and all 5.1.1) have this bug fixed. Be cautious when installing OTA these days and FlashFire might be your best shot of upgrading systems. Use Odin to unroot and receive OTA if you want.

He means, go to Settings>About Device and look what the Android Version is. If it is 5.0 then do not bother looking to root your device...it's not possible on an ATT device with Android 5.0 right now.

yea its 5.0, is it possible to downgrade it? if it is, what version do you think is good enough to root?
You can't downgrade if you're already on 5.0, and even if you could, you can't install anything beyond Touchwiz (Samsung) based ROMs because of a locked bootloader.
Let me know if you have any luck

Thank you for posting this question because I am in the exact same situation. I have an AT&T Galaxy S 5 Android 5.1.1. I was never interesting in rooting my phone until just recently and have been doing some light reading on Life Hacker to learn more and it brought me here. I just wanted to clarify your comment above. Are you saying that having the phone that I/we have we are completely out of luck if we wanted to root/modify our phones? Forever or just until something changes down the road?
Well I sold my at&t s5 and ordered a unlocked tmobile s5 to use on at&t with my sim card because you can root the tmobile version. I hope one day soon someone will figure out how to root it I believe it will be done soon just keep checking back on here.

Well good news for y'all:
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G900A/
Install it with Odin(http://updato.com/how-to/how-to-install-an-official-samsung-stock-firmware-using-odin).
And for the custom recovery:

Well, yeah! But you need to downgrade first. Note that I don't test it, so use it at your own risk! Also I recommend that you use a good cable, or else...

I don't think that will work, the firmware listed there is 4.4.2 which is KitKat, you can not downgrade to KK if you are on lollipop or marshmallow, you could soft brick or worse. I would not attempt this unless you are actually on KK.

Well it seems that is true...For us:

Maybe you can "update"(don't recommend it,though. Again, try it at your own risk):

For future reference, don't give these unsure ideas to people and tell them to update their phones like this. At the moment, YOU CANNOT GET ROOTED LOLLIPOP 100% of the time unless you were/are on 4.4.2 KitKat with root (use Towelroot) and update through muniz_ri's update method. Trying to downgrade to KitKat will result in a bricked device as the thread previously mentioned.
The reason why root persists on 5.0 when you update it via this method is due to using the older bootloader which doesn't verify the system's integrity the same way the newer bootloaders do.

OK, thanks for explaining and sorry for making these unsure posts.
I actually doesn't have the s5 att(except for a family member). I really just wanna help a little.
Hopefully now that we got our own set of threads, someone will find root....
Any root methods posted for the SM-J327T will also work for the SM-J327T1 since they are the same exact device. But anyone from the previous thread that was under Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) please continue posting on this new thread. I have requested that a moderator move the old thread to here to avoid any confusion from new people looking for a root method for this device.
I would totally help build a rom for this device, that is once we can root it. However i don't think ill ever be purchasing another samsung again.

Same here, im going back to Motorola.
Any old unlocked phones? DeviceManagement if so pm me about them. Im stuck on metro. Not sure for how much longer though. And I don't know why they insist on locking us out of OUR phones. It is a pain, such a pain. And the reason i even got this phone is to fix my service issues. However they are just as bad.

CF autoroot for sm-j327t & sm-j327t1
for sm-j327t (tmobile):https://download.chainfire.eu/1156/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-j3popeltetmo-j3popeltetmo-smj327t.zip
for sm-j327t1 (metropcs):https://download.chainfire.eu/1157/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-j3popeltemtr-j3popeltemtr-smj327t1.zip
This will trip knox and void your warranty you have been warned. Feel free to test the device with the corresponding file. it may work it may not. if it does not work it will say secure check fail and prevent you from booting into android or recovery. if that is the case use the stock rom file for your phone to fix it. I will compile a quick fix that will not delete all your apps in a little bit. after that i will post the files you can use so you can recover from a brick.

Yes we use odin. odin is included in the zip file.but i have just tested it and it fails to flash because the bootloader is locked.

The bootloader is probably unlocked on that model. Apparently all international bootloaders are unlocked for Samsung.

i am not totally sure that its unlocked. our device has a exynos chipset and for some reason it is locked. but i am starting to think that samsung messed up some code so even if your flashing something knox wont trip for some reason. but if anyone has the money feel free to test the international version that will be the only way to know for sure.
