So,
My friend (Simon), recently acquired a Dell Precision Series computer/micro server tower.
Inside, it has 2 Intel® Xeon® X5472 quad-core processors running at 3.00ghz
My other friend (Josh) said to Simon, in his apparent jealousy, that even though Simon essentially has 8 cores, they are %&$# because they are VIRTUAL cores and not physical cores.
I scouted the Intel website and found this model processor and clearly states that within each processor, "Number of cores: 4. Number of threads: 4"
I am not familiar with threads but I am aware that hyper-threading is essentially creating virtual cores.
So the question is:
Is he using 8 virtual cores or merely 8 physical cores
If you can answer this, could you please tell me your reasoning if you have one?
Thanks =)

[CORRECTION]
8 physical cores or merely 8 virtual cores*****
This is a thread
assuming he is running windows 7....
click start, right there above where you clicked... there is a search box... type "dxdiag" and hit enter.
this will bring up a window listing all your hardware in detail.
i have an i5, dual core (which is actually a quad core with 4 logical processors) so under my "processor" description, it reads "M540 @ 2.53 Ghz (4 CPUs) ~2.5 Ghz."
running this program will tell you exactly what hardware he has. sounds like a dual quad core to me, though.
hope that helps.
you can also, type "msconfig" in that same window... then click the "boot" tab, then "advanced options" and on the top right you will see a window listing how many processor you have available to you.
hope that helps
His says:
Intel(R ) Xeon( R)
CPU X5472 @ 3. 00GHz (8 CPU's), ~3GHz
8 physical cores or only virtual?
Sorry =\
And thanks for the responses...

I'm pretty sure that's a 4 physical core processor.
sure is. that is a dual processor, quad core processor set up, my friend.

Says here its a quad core
Each Xeon has 4 physical cores inside. A dual processor setup in this case means 8 actual cores. A better question will be whether your friend has applications that can make use of said number of cores.
The most number of cores is 6 , which is the Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition Q----- (something) , in which it has 6 cores 12 threads (as said by the Intel site)

Two processors..

Just recently got a touchpad. After reading around, I found out the 64gb version is clocked at 1.5ghz. I have a 32.
Both seem to have the S3 APQ8060 CPU, which is 1.2-1.5ghz. Does this mean the touchpad is technically overclocked..ie..100% safe to OC to 1.5?
Thanks!

The 64 gb are clocked at 1.5, the 16 & 32 gb are underclocked at 1.2........
In webos I have it oc'd to 1.7 max, 384 min. using Uberquernel and the preware speed tweaks. In android, I oc to 1.7 max, 384 min using Antutu CPU Master.
I have had no issues, but others have. Make sure you have a good backup, just in case.

My question was more regarding the hardware. Why is the Same model # of CPU clocked lower for the 16/32 verions??

Underclocking to 1.2 allowed HP to claim longer lasting battery life.
I've found little difference oc'n to 1.7.

To save battery life mostly, Apple underclocks the iPhone processor IIRC for the same reason.
Also while manufacturing chips for same speed, not every chip will achieve the same clocking...keeping everything same one chip can go to 1.9 while other can just go 1.5...so most manufacturer sets at stable frequency..so that every chip can achieve that
Almost all devices are under clocked in some way.
just make sure you use a cpu tuning app like setcpu or whatever to tune your frequencies
Most Touchpads can easily do 1.5 since that's the rated speed of the chip.
1.7 or higher is not within specifications and not all TP's can do it. I have one that runs 1.7 right now without issue, but the last two I had refused to go above 1.5.
The reason has something to do with the nature of the cpu making process. Just to let you know, there are some variants of desktop cpu even though they have same architecture, take i7 for example, why do you think one sells more expensive than the other? The reason being the most expensive one (9 series) has least defect in the cpu, enable it to utilize the most transistors and this is pretty rare, therefore they priced higher.
All cpu were made in the same process, the one that have more defects will priced lower, they in fact shut down the defective part and mark them 'more energy efficient' while they are effectively running less transistor.
The same thing happened here, not all cpu is perfect, so not all cpu can be clocked high. So they decided to take 1.2ghz, as it is probably where most manufactured cpu able to cope with. i.e. if you device can run 2ghz or more that mean you get the almost perfect cpu, as simple as that.
My Touchpad overclocked in WebOS @ 1.7 but can't get higher without it crashing. In Android however, using Bricked Kernel on CM Official Nightlies I can reach 2.02 Ghz (not stable without vcore changes but could be stable, just keep in mind of how warm the Touchpad's getting) and 2.157 Ghz (with unsafe voltages for benchmark suicide runs).

Hello guys,
I`ve been trying to find a way to have all 4 cpu cores online all the time to see if it helps playing games (lag) as I tested, for me every game lags when there is only 1 core running, than when the phone needs more power it turns on other cores and it lags, on that exact moment!
Trying Glowball, Tegra 3 game doesn`t lag because every core is on 100% of the time! And I`ve seen users saying that they don`t have lag on their phones because every core is active during gaming sessions, which is not my case.
I tried to use System Tuner Pro > Boot Settings > Force all CPUs online with no success and didn`t try CPU Editor as I don`t know how to install it.:silly:
If you have lags on gaming this might be a solution!
Does anyone know how to keep`em online all the time? 10H here.
Thanks for your help. :fingers-crossed:

Well Glowball doesnt lag because they optimized it for a tegra3 devices. so the problem is the game developer, not the phone as far as i know.
i dont know if what you want can be done.

Well, Shadowgun THD is in theory optimized and lags anyway. It`s just frustrating to have a quad-core high end phone that lags on so many games.

I am playing Shadowgun THD without lag I dont know why, But yes u are right about this problem.
I have tried playing most wanted It iagged but I noticed that the procesor speed are 520 mhz or such, and it makes problems,
So I put maximum 1500 MHz as minimum speed clock, but after playing more then 5 minutes processor speed was not more than 1000 MHz (even with root setup).
It turns that the problem is in the kernel, it is some sort of OVERHEATING protection.
But I am pretty sure that all 4 cores were active even the speeds didn't go more than 1000 MHz.

its not a overheating problem. i play MW and theres is alwasy only 1 core at 1500MHZ at 95%. If the game could use the other cores, it wouldnt.
remember htc has exactly the same problem... its the developer fault coz there is apps and game optimized t use all cores when needed
This sucks right? If this could be done I`m quite sure that the lag problem would be solved or minimized greatly!
If anyone knows something about it please let us know!
Much appreciated.
First if you forced all the cores online ,, then you can use your phone for about 2 hours with overheat . So you will lose your battery .
and about the games it is a problem with our ''kernel'' ,, the kernel is controlling the cpu and the hardware . LG optimized the kernel for long battery use and if you noticed the cpu takes a long time to change the frequency . LG made the phone for daily use .
To test CPU use benchmark ,, not games , games are very complex application and maybe isn't compatible with tegra 3 .
Our phones have nearly the same Galaxy S3 benchmark scores .
And if you noticed our CPU is excellent with miltitasking
you can say our CPU has a hidden power .
Any custom kernel can solve this problems but we have a locked bootloader . So we should wait until JB which has unlocked bootloaders (as LG said)
Trust me, making an app that can even run on more than one thread is hard; very hard

I only faced game lag issue when my device is over heated or when playing multiplayer games (like SG DeadZone) with bad internet connection..never faced such issue due to CPU?
To overcome heat issue I have underclock max speed to 1.2ghz with CPU Tweak app..and it has helped a lot with over heating as well as battery life, and never faced any issue with lag even with 1.2ghz speed..
I have read in many place that even HTC One X behave similarly until JB updates arrived so you dont worry much even if some configuration or app in your device is creating game lags, it will be much better with new JB updates :fingers-crossed:
Quick note:
The Tegra 3 can run only in Single Core mode on 1.5GHz, in other words when your CPU reads 1.5GHz, only one CPU core is being utilised. If you actually want to use all 4 cores, you should set the max frequency to 1.4GHz to avoid the CPU clocking up to 1.5GHz. Lag is caused by switching between all 4 cores on 1.4GHz and single core on 1.5GHz.

I'm referring to the Tegra 3 T30 present in our devices. The T33 in the HOX+ can run at 1.6GHz in quad core and 1.7GHz in single core. However, the T30 can only run at 1.5GHz single core and 1.4GHz quad core.
To cite Wikipedia,
Tegra 3 T30: 1.4 GHz Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 (up to 1.5 GHz in single-core mode)
IIRC over at the HOX forums there was a thread on CPU management to prevent lag spikes in games when Tegra 3 switches from quad core 1.4GHz to 1.5GHz single core or something along the lines of that.

This app is getting famous now, but in case you didn`t see, it`s called tegra overclock (not tegrak!) and it manages to force every core online pretty well. It has some good other features too.
It`s paid but it`s worth it.
not to mention it DOES improve your gaming experience.

From what i can deduce from dn5 roms or other roms based on note 5 that note 5's rom is made in such a way that it cheats antutu to get a score of 80+ (if it is scoring less than this in ideal conditions), like it increases the scores of ux, its like we have an ssd builtin our note 4 which we cant use untill we r on note 5 rom, but in reality its not ssd. i m not saying that xda or independent developers have any kind of hand in this but samsung might do this kind of thing and they have done something like this in the past.
This is a theory.
No offence to anyone.

Antutu is just bull**** lol just delete it. Exynos 7420 isnt that powerfull either. Stick with pcmark, geekbench and gfxbench if you want to check benchmarks.
So, I went on a "boredom rampage" and I've read an article about a guy overclocking his 865 GPU to 865 MHz and reaching Adreno 660-levels of performance and I decided to give it a try and it was awesome.
Problem is, I'm too much of a thinkerer and I pushed the GPU as much as I could. I ended up on 2000 MHz with "TURBO" voltage profile and it's rock solid even on 2100 MHz with the same profile but KonaBess gives me an error if I try to edit the GPU tables after I booted at 2100 MHz.
I even edited the clock profiles to make it smoother, starting from 305 MHz to 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1600, 1800 and 2000 with the right voltages.
Now, the battery and SoC temperatures are the same, the battery drain is basically the same, some other fellow modders with the same device (Mi 10T Pro 5G 8/256 with Pixel Experience Plus ROM) didn't manage to hit the same clocks, crashing even with 1000 or 1200 MHz, with my file from the KonaBess app.
So, have I been extremely lucky with the silicon lottery or it's just an illusion?
Please ask if you need ANY benchmark or proof. I've been monitoring the GPU clock with Franco Kernel Manager Live Monitoring and the clock is solid at 2000 MHz and the 3D performance has at first jumped and then slowly climbed, especially on 3DMark Wild Life Extreme. Wild Life Extreme Stress Test is stable the temperatures are fine.
Do you guys have any questions/suggestions/requests?
Edit: Here are some 3DMark runs, both Wild Life and Wild Life Extreme at stock and 2 GHz. I use Greenify, my storage is 94% full and all my processes in the background take up 4 GB of RAM and I didn't touch the bus for the various steppings for the clocks, so I believe that if heavily tuned, this could make a difference.

i don't think your gpu is actually running at 2ghz while you are running a benchmark. going from stock to 2ghz would at least have to give you an extra 20-30 fps in Wild Life.

Not necessarily. The GPU IS running at 2 GHz but I think that the problem might be some diminishing returns where the clock doesn't mean anything after a certain point.
Are you try locking the freq on 2ghz in Kernel maneger ? Set min and max to 2gzhz with performance governor .

I've made various frequency steps. 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1600, 1800 and 2000 MHz. But if I change the governor, after I reboot, it will be msm-adreno-tz again. Max frequency is still 2000 MHz and minimum 400 MHz.
Yes after reboot is resets like on every phone you have to check apply on boot and select min 2000GHZ and max 2000ghz GPu freq in tap in FKM and set gov to performance and do benchmark like 3dmark wild life . Like that. And in Smart pack Kernel manager free app is GPU throttle turn that off.
Check box apply on boot and after boot will be apply.
And that you can show improvements of OC

Thanks What is temperature ? Do you game with that or this just experiment ?
Temperatures are roughly the same. I do game with that. On normal games, frequency stays at 400 MHz, but on really heavy games like Genshin Impact, completely maxed out, depending on the scene, the GPU goes to 1.6 or 1.8 GHz and rarely at 2 GHz during some heavy cutscenes. 3DMark keeps it at 2 GHz all the time.

Here tutorial but it old I need make new one because there isn't good one tutorial about it.
This doesn't make any sense. Why would Qualcomm leave so much on the table ?
