Hey guys I think I actually did it. I was going to install the JPC Froyo Rom, and somehow booted into recovery in the ROM. Now whenever I turn the phone on it boots into recovery, and none of the button combinations work for putting it into Download mode so I can flash back to stock. On the i9000 thread it says that if you get into this situation you cannot flash back. Any of you guys run into this issue? If not then it looks like I'll be trying to convince an ATT rep to give me a new phone
Try powering off... Then hold vol up and down buttons then plug in usb.... That happened to me... Your not bricked

Connect to adb and run reboot command

Nope
Nope sorry guys I know all of what you just said. As for plugging in USB while holding volume buttons, it'll just go to that battery charging screen, and adb doesn't work because it doesn't boot past recovery. Sorry guys but yes it was bricked. It's okay though because I just went to ATT and since they can't identify the problem they just replaced the phone
Thought mine was bricked one night, too. Same scenario. Tried dropping the SIM and SD card out even though I didn't think it would make a difference, but it did. Got to download screen and reflashed with ODIN.
Good luck.

If you pull the battery, then put the battery in. hold both volume buttons buttons, and then plug the phone into the computer, it didn't boot to download?
Im curious if you even tried to use the Odin one click thread
There are 4 or 5 ways in that thread on how to get to download mode. And how exactly does this relate to development...just another curious thought. Well, you are getting a new phone, just hope that ATT or Samsung don't try to figure out the cause of your phone being "bricked".
AGAIN!
Okay after this I swear I won't be messing around with Froyo anymore. Here's the story: I got into download on the replacement captivate. Tried to install JPC froyo, but it never started flashing so I unplugged it from Odin and then tried to turn it back on. It goes to the normal "connect phone to computer" screen. However no attempts to get back into download mode have worked. Holding both volume buttons and power until second black screen doesn't work, booting while holding volume down doesn't work, holding both volume buttons and then inserting USB cable doesn't work. I think I'm stuck in this screen unless there's some incredible way I have yet to try. Anybody have any ideas? I would greatly appreciate feedback from the experienced users (Zilch25, designgears, kaik, reaver117), because I think I'd be pushing it trying to get it replaced a second time in such rapid succession
To flashman2002:
I put it in this section because it's in the development section that most flashing and such occurs so I thought there would be the greatest knowledge base. And yes I've pored over the one click thread and none of the methods mentioned there have any effect!
Jeez, I just scared the **** out of myself. I ran the remove lagfix script and it rebooted my phone but it was just a black screen. So I take the battery out. Bad Idea. It showed the ATT screen but just black after that. I could get it into recovery mode but not download. Then I messed some more and would only show a vague disconnected pic.
Finally I got it into download by doing this: (had odin open before hand)
1. took everything out including sim and usb cable.
2. quickly inserted battery and held volume buttons and very quickly inserted usb.
I'm pretty sure its the speed that matters because I tried about 4 times and only when I did it really fast did it work.

Nope. Unless you can do this with godly speed I dont think it'll work. I just got to the "Connect Phone to Computer" screen again.
You had the usb in before anything appeared on the screen right?

Yeah originally. I can get to that screen now by just putting the battery in and holding power button. It seems to behave exactly like it normally would, just can't get out of it.
What screen? The screen you want has a big yellow triangle and says download.

No it's on the phone...!...computer screen. That's what I'm saying, it's been stuck here for a while and none of the methods described on the one click thread work. I've been here before and just holding volume buttons and holding down power for it to boot twice and releasing would do it. Not so anymore. Can't get into download mode doing anything!
Well I read In the SRE thread I think that there are reports of newer phones not responding to any button combos. Bad batch they said not on purpose...
Also for the i9000 apparently you only have to hold the down volume key so since you flashed a i9000 rom try that if you haven't already.
You cant get into recovery right? Just holding volume and power then letting go of power after a bit?
Adb reboot download...

Nope none of it works. I just got it replaced less then 3 hours ago and I already bricked it. I hope somebody finds out something that'll get this fixed. Maybe some way to force download mode through a computer application or something.
Well theres adb like mentioned above but im pretty sure that requires at least recovery mode working.
Like i said before i was stuck on the same screen so maybe theres still hope.
If all else fails someone will figure out how to JTAG these things eventually...

I know it doesn't help you out now, but when you remove the lag fix, just leave it set on the black screen. It's doing its thing. It will reboot when it's done. The home keys should still light up if you press them in this state...
Well thanks for your input anyway guys. Hopefully somebody figures something out. For now I guess I'll keep the SIM in my old iPhone 3G so I at least have a phone. Tomorrow I'll go to another ATT store in my area. Chances are the rep won't know what the hell that screen means and will replace the phone promptly.
I forgot that my phone was plugged into my PC with the sd card mounted. I checked for update and it found one and started the download. The download just sat there at 0%. I realized my usb was connected and unmounted it (thinking that the update somehow was waiting for the SD card). No change, so I clicked Cancel on the upload screen. I then tried Check for Update and again and it said "no firmware". I rebooted and tried again. Still same message. I then tried "Resume update" instead of "Check for update". It said it found an update and would reboot the phone in 5 seconds. The phone then rebooted and it started to apply the update. This seemed very wrong to me because the updated certainly didn't have time to download. The update failed and it said it was rebooting my phone. The phone went off and now I can't get it to start back up. I press the power and get nothing. I pulled the battery and sim card. Still nothing. Any ideas?
Yikes, that's a sticky situation you've got yourself into. From reading around the forums it seems that the update was bricking phones anyway; however, from what you described it seems like that isn't your case. If you can't power on your phone, then there isn't a way to head back to stock or fix the update, that I know about. You might think about calling Samsung or AT&T and saying you tried applying the update, but now your phone won't power on.

try holding both volume keys and power button until you see something then release power.
If you bought your phone from an AT&T store and you have one close to you, I would take it in and show it to them. They replaced mine on the spot, took me less than 5 minutes.

Check and see if there's a warranty center in your area. AT&T has one on the south side of Baltimore. You walk in, they test it real quick and if they can't fix it, they give you a new phone. Much quicker than exchanging it by mail if there's one close to you.

Yup. Nothing. Screen stays black. No sign of life.
Damn I was really close to messing mine up too then from the sound of it. I noticed my phone downloading some kind of update today too, well I immediately hit cancel, not knowing what it would do and wanting to come do some research here before accepting it. When I went back, I also hit Resume Update and it gave me the same "no firmware" error, then I hit check for update and it gave me an error message that said "You have not waited 24 hours since the last time you checked for an update, please wait 23...."
Guess I wont be trying to update tomorrow afterall
I had the same problem, but my phone completely downloaded the update. Couldn't power it on at all even if I pushed the + - volume button with power button. Took it to ATT and told them that it happened when I applied the update, and since I was over my 30 day update, they called some ATT replacement hotline and they are sending me one today.
ditto on a dead phone because of OTA my wifes not mine(glad it was hers)
stock captivate update stopped at 87% then went black, no power at all, not even the volume +- way
called att 2 day air on a replacement of course its a refurb but better than no phone at all....
oven
Well i am going to sound like nutcase but have you tried putting into the oven? I am being 100% serious. Look over in the i9000 forums and i think there were some people that were bricked beyond recognition and they did some crazyness such as putting it in the oven at 350 untill it was hot to the touch but not melting and it got their phones into download......just a thought and no i am not lying it worked for them!!!!
Best of luck guys
Remove the battery and put it again, without turning the phone on, press volume up + volume down, and then plug it to the USB connected to your computer.

That didn't work either. I will receive a replacement phone tomorrow. I hate getting a refurb. My phone is in perfect condition. I hope the replacement one is too.
Here's something that I did discover. I don't think the phone is actually dead. I think it's stuck in some kind of loop, making it completely unresponsive. I had it sitting in my dest drawer today for several hours. When I took it out it was pretty warm - as if was clocking some pretty serious cpu or network traffic. Either way, it's a brick, but I think it a living brick, not a dead brick. In case you're wondering, my office was like a refridgerator today, so it wasn't from the warm room.

I have received several refurbs over the years and all the phone appear to be brand new. I already exchanged my Captivate one. Not a scratch on them. Even though they say they are refurbs the device appears to be new product. You will not have a problem.
i got mine bricked too, it was perfectly fine before the update... it stopped at 50% and then it said update failed, phone rebooted, and then it never open its eyes again, its DEAD... omg, good job att! morons giving us wrong software...

I've had the same issue but I was able to fix it. Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact steps, you will have to try for a few times until you make it work.
When your phone is "dead":
1. Take out SIM+SD cards (keep your battery in)
2. USB connect to your PC
3. Start Odin3
4. VolUp+Power and wait until a few red colored lines will show up (if not then try for a few times until they show up), you should see something like this:
RST_STAT =0x1
PMIC_IRQ =0x3c
..... and so on.
5. When you see the red lines press VolUp+VolDown+Power
6. The red lines will go off/on in a few seconds but you keep holding VolUp+VolDown+Power
7. When red lines will go off for a second time just release Power, you should get back to download mode
8. Use Odin3 to re-flash
Good luck!

Okay I was using odin one click it was at rebooting device after it completed pushing stock onto the phone thats when I discounted the usb.... should have waited two secs I know but now the phone doesn't seem to get past the att world phone screen keeps looping over and over I have tried all the key combos different times and ways, vol up and down being held doesn't get to download mode the screen remains black plunging in seems to get to charge mode where even plunging into the wall charger it loops trying to calculate the battery status... any method I haven't tried... I did get it to boot once full and was usable didn't think to redo odin at the time and restarted back to this mess...tried three different jigs using the 100k 5% X3 even through its not a full brick due to the button combos gotten no where. Please Help
Search the forum to build a jig in order to get into download mode. Or you may need to buy one just in case in the future.

Try this:
Open Odin and plug your cable into your computer but not your phone yet
Pull battery on phone and put it back in
Hold both volume buttons down and then plug your phone in
It should go into download made and you can reflash the stock ROM
Can anyone please help, i have the exact same problem. No matter how i try to enter download mode, it just gives me a charging sign and when i start my phone, it goes into an infinite boot loop.
Try this:
1. Remove battery from phone, SIM card and MicroSD card (if you have one)
2. Wait AT LEAST 10 seconds with your phone in this state
3. Hold Volume Up/Down, don't let go
4. While holding the volume keys, insert the battery
If this worked, you should be in Download Mode almost instantly.
There are a lot of key combos for Download Mode, this is just one of them. If all the button combos don't work, you need to build/buy a JIG to force your phone into Download Mode.

Ahah Thats the same exact steps I was able to get the phone to boot that one time instead of the up down I was still attempting it to get past the loop holding the power button instead using those steps, if I had know it would have been one of the only times I would see it in there I would have pushed it to download with adb though...
can't test getting it to download mode now took it back fit the description of the standing on/off issue with the device still honored by warranty. And I wouldn't have posted without searching everywhere to make a jig, I made three of them though I noticed it still didn't get to download mode. I made sure that the last two jigs were done correct. Think that when it was disconnected from odin it wasn't done finalizing after the stock push gah >,< live and learn and do something else to the cappies XD.
Thanks for the link placing an order just in-case ~whistles looking around then side to side pushes another rom~ lalala
To offer my own advice if it ever happens again, what I've been able to do is:
1. Pull the battery out
2. Put it back in
3. Open Odin
4. Hold Both Volume Buttons (without holding the power button)
5. Plug the phone back in
It went immediately into download mode for me, Odin managed to time out several times while I was trying to flash a co-worker's Captivate to the official Froyo leak. One of those times I couldn't even get the phone to come up with any screen. I really do think this thing cannot be bricked.

That has been my experience so far, too. I've "bricked" twice, once with an "all black" screen, and once with the phone-!-computer screen. I've yet to need a jig, though I thought I may have needed it last night when I got the "all black" screen.
Keep trying the different button press methods to get into download mode. It took me 4 attempts to get from "all black" to "phone-!-computer" to a happy robot digging away.

Ive used odin before changing roms and have gotten to download mode with combos on my last cappy before that night (dramatic music) en ways..
did some more digging on this bad ass info and learning community "XDA" hehe as to how it got the way it did, I found out I was updated with the new patch when I sent it for screen change to this shop, so...using odin one click with this creates a hang time to where it looked like it was finished after pushing jh6 (which was totally off should have used odin 3 and pushed jh2 then clockwork update to jh7) so thats when I disconnected (second noob mistake of the situation) basically blowing the finalization out and key combs for recovery and download mode. and im guessing the jig was made wrong too at this point >,<.

If you cant get your jig to work take it in to warranty (if your water inicators are sound and no physical damage) and say its power cycling on off at random times (which is true.. ) and it did it when you were sync to mini kies, did it an hour after the OP heh good luck

Purchase jig from ebay, or google and try igo jig.
If your phone is turning on with jig you are not touching the right prongs. I know, I know it is not easy, but unless it if touching just right, it can turn your phone on.

That happens try a different usb port or just borrow someone else computer, I used my networking classes computer my laptop was doing the same thing when I was change roms.
Changed the title to fit the issue, this is not a soft brick this is a boot brick that can affect the charge indicator in power off state as well. So whats the difference the soft brick is when you flash a rom incorrectly and you get the att world screen constantly staying on, the key combinations still work when the phone is like this.. in the case with a boot brick the att screen cycles over and over and the jig may or may not work I haven't been able to fully test it here in this state I have seen a packager attempt to finish once on the recent one but all the key combos I could find didn't function my noob guess is the phone forgot how to ride a bike (meaning is hasn't connected keys to recovery that was being flashed or hardware to there states without being booted normally) ultimate fix is if its in warranty (meaning no physical damage or water) take it back for power on off. the soft brick i've seen before and have fixed with odin 2-3 three times, and ive seen a blown kernel type too where keys and odin fix up like new.

Have a link to which one you have? It sounds like the solder points on the jig were a little weak. This can happen if they aren't good welds. If you want give one of mine a shot. I'll refund you if it reboots your phone...
Buy one HERE...
I had a boot brick happen to me just the other day. I was running Andromeda 1.1 with stock kernel & modem, and tried to tinker with swapping the AT&T boot screen using connexion2005's video on the subject (NOT insinuating any blame at all, his videos are fantastic).
I tested it successfully the first time, then flashed back the i9000_param_lfs, and pushed a new image to the device again (everything was exactly the same, with the exception of the boot_screen.bat script not making the phone ask for superuser approval while pushing the new logo_ATNT), and everything looked ok.
Reboot device, and...boink.
Black screen, no image at all on power on, only charging screen when usb cable connected. ADB, nothing. 3 button, nothing. Vol up+down, remove battery, insert usb cable, do hokey pokey, nothing. 5 attempts at the 100k resistor jig, for hours, nothing. No download, no recovery. Seems like the phone was toast.
Strange how I had just done this successfully earlier in the day, to now having it completely hard brick this phone.
I ended up taking the phone back to a local warranty center, and they swapped it (1008) for a 1010 (gps works fantastic on this one, btw)...I just hope there's no bill coming if they find out it was rooted and flashed. *crosses fingers and uses any and all karma*
Any ideas what happened? Did I scramble this things boot loader? I've heard how hard it is to fully brick this phone, and looks like I succeeded. How lucky.
I'd just like to know what went wrong so when I (or anyone else) root and flash next time, the chances of this happening are reduced (or better understood).
Thanks
Hi. To start with I bought a phone from a friend which I knew was faulty but decided to take my chances and try to fix it. He claims he did nothing to the phone but don't know for sure. Phone is in constant bootloop, Goes until splash screen and reboots. Worst yet to come - even bootloader menu restarts on constant basis when i try to get into it. Meaning it goes into bootloader but restarts in few seconds before i can get to factory reset. Computer is not picking up this device but i also don't have any drivers installed but don't even know how to install them with a phone in this state. Is there anything i can do about it? Been with Samsung for the past few years and here is everything completely different so don't know much about adb but am a quick learner and can follow any steps! I can provide picture of bootloader if it would be any helpful.

Seems like battery is completely dead as it only reboots when there is power supply connected, but then it won't turn off (any charging light don't come on, not sure if it should though). Just now i've seen a vodafone logo for a very short second when I connected to pc from charger. But phone rebooted again just after.

edit. downloaded drivers (4.8) but that didn't change anything and windows still doesn't pick up device.
After connecting my one to computer for past 3 hours its started more frequently boot and showing Vodafone menu but still restarts shortly after. Vodafone logo shows on and lights on soft buttons starts flashing like 3 times and than it keeps rebooting. Does it mean anything?

Seems like battery is completely dead as it only reboots when there is power supply connected, but then it won't turn off (any charging light don't come on, not sure if it should though).

That almost sounds like your POWER button is stuck!! Are you able to completely power off, and it stays off.
I think i know what it is. Power button stuck and keeps restarting device. Although i can feel pressing it, this is what it looks like.

Didn't see your comment but this is exactly how it looks to me. I can't switch off phone and in bootloader it acts like i was pressing power button. Although it operates normally meaning that it can be pressed down. Arranged warranty repair with HTC and they are collecting phone tomorrow.

Good luck mate, but definitely sounds like the power button is stuck
It's been fixed under warranty by HTC. They replaced motherboard on mine HTC. So all good
Got a Moto G 2014 from WIND Mobile last week. Allowed updates to go through, finished at 4.4.4. Switched to ART assuming it would improve performance. It did not, and I had an issue where every time I boot up it would optimize every app. This made bootup take about 10 minutes. I decided to troubleshoot I would switch back to Dalvik. Began switch to Dalvik with 80% remaining battery. During the runtime switch, it booted up fine. I decided to power it off and then back on again and watch the bootup process as a test just to make sure everything was now fine.
Now, it doesn't respond when I try to power it on. No backlight, nothing on screen, no vibrate, nothing. Holding power and volume down does nothing. Holding power for 120 seconds (something I read online) does nothing.
I would appreciate any help I can get with this from anyone who has faced this issue.
Hold power and vol down to power up in bootloader mode and do a factory reset

Holding power and volume down does not respond either. I've tried holding both down for as long as 120 seconds and no luck.
Oh, damn. Plugging the USB does something?

Plugging into USB also has no response. It used to vibrate and display a battery status screen immediately after being plugged in. But now, I plug it in and nothing at all.

That's really weird. Try to get it replaced, as it seems to be dead.

Yeah that's my next step. Doesn't give me a lot of confidence in this phone. I think anyone planning on trying ART before the Android 5.0 update should beware. Make sure they've backed up their important data and are able to return their phone for replacement, because what triggered this bricking for me was switching back from ART to Dalvik. I made no changes to the bootloader, ROM, etc. This was completely stock.
Thanks for replying!
Re-Flash!

I believe you're gonna have to re-flash your device. Are you able to enter the boot loader? if yes, then re-flash the device with Stock firmware using ADB. Search the forums for instructions or reply and I'll post them myself. Do post your Device Model also.

It's actually already completely stock. I made no changes to it, besides enabling developer options and changing the runtime to ART (and then back to Dalvik). Model number is XT1064.

I know, but since it ain't booting up, you have to re-flash the stock firmware.

Sorry about the confusion, that does make sense. By accessing the boot loader, are you referring to the menu you reach when you hold power and volume down as you power on the phone? If not, what do you mean by accessing the boot loader?
Yep

Okay. So I have no access to that at all. Power and volume down doesn't do anything. Windows seems to recognize it somehow, I hear the device-plugged-in sound, but the device manager doesn't seem to show it listed. I'm guessing I don't have any options left for fixing this, so I'm going to bring it back and see if I can get it replaced on the spot or begin an RMA process.
Try this! All credit goes to Falcon G

This may just be your lucky day! Falcon G has posted a guide on how to unbrick Hard Bricked devices.
Follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...rick-hard-bricked-moto-g-2nd-gen-5-0-t2966010
Cheerio!!
First connect your charger to phone and leave it for 2-3 hr may be your battery is dead. Same thing happen to a member of my whatsapp group now his phone is perfect

For anyone interested in some followup, I went to WIND to see if it could be replaced. They refused to replace it, because there were a few scuff marks around the edge from when I dropped it the night I got it. I went home and called Motorola tech support to look into an RMA. They had me go through the troubleshooting steps. This involved me plugging it back into the charger (now it's been unplugged from my charger all day because I brought it with me for returning). Looks like leaving it unplugged for a while to let the battery discharge did the trick. This time, when I plugged it into the charger, the white LED came on, and I got the white screen with the battery indicator. It was fine.
Here's hoping I don't run into that again.
