Unable to mount '/data' - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
lately i am having some trouble with my Phone.
Story:
I was surfing the world wide web and than turned the phone in standby (with 30% battery). Next morning i tried starting it but it didnt react. So i plugged it in and tried to start it. Everything seemed normal but then animation of the motorola logo lasted like 15 min until i got a blackscreen (phone is still on). I got curious and turned it off by holding the power button for serveral seconds. I tried again turning it on but every time the same thing happened. So i tried to reset my device with the factory reset. But nothing changed. After that i went into recoverymode (Teamwin) and tried to install a ROM and there i got always the same error:
E:Unable to stat '/data/dalvik-cache/arm/[email protected]@[email protected]@classes.dex'
E:Unable to stat '/data/system/packages.xml'
E:Unable to stat 'data/system/packages.list'
and sometimes:
Unable to mount '/data'
So i googled it and found some solutions:
Factory reset
Wiping data
Format Data
I tried all of this solutions but it didnt seem that something has changed.
Does someone know how to fix this?
Phone details:
Motorola
Model: XT1068
Type: M0FB9

ok i think i found something out.
The wipe tries to delete those files but they are only readable so they cant be removed.
If i try to delete them manually it gives exactly the same error. " unable to state....".
So the whole dalvik-cache is Read-only. Is that why the TWRP cant wipe it?

Yes I think so. Welcome to the club of emmc (all partitions) are read-only mode....
I cant wipe, format or install anything on my XT1063 and nobody seems to be the solution... So there is my phone (and others too) useless...

But it had to be writeable before because the files from my apps are all there. So there happened anything that changed this. But what would make a change like that without a userinput?
If i delete the data partition and create a new one it should work theoretically or are there any files in /data that are important for bootloader,recovery,...?

Normally you would want to wipe data and the cache before flashing.

The problem is that since we have a read-only partitions all the changes we made are not saved, so we cant wipe or format or install anything. We need a tool or way that change the permissions for the entire emmc memory. I have search without success

That doesnt sound well...,
So since my phone is rooted i have no warranty (or should i try it? i am from germany) and my phone broke after 8 month...

I was seeing similar "Unable to stat '/data/.....' errors in the TWRP log which was causing a slow bootup as well as battery drain. I flashed the stock 5.02 ROM as given in reefuge's post, re-rooted and restored TWRP and the problem seemed to have gone away.

Just as a side note here I've bought a 2nd very bricked xt1068 from ebay to play with, this has a corrupted emmc but still boots to a semi working AP Fastboot mode (but NOT recovery) it's permantly stuck in a bootloader cycle - never boots - I figured its missing vital bootloader info and has deleted or corrupt partitons that cant be written to.
via windows 10 pc
So far I have tried my Easy Installer (based loosely on RSDlite) - NO luck
RSDlite 6.2.4 flashing stock roms (4.4.4/5.0.2/stagefright) with and without a fastboot cable (its supplies power even if fone is dead) this is different to a standard USB cable - NO LUCK
again repeated on my GOOD xt1068 and both methods work fine on that but not the corrupted xt1068
LINUX ubuntu 15.04
from my good xt1068 with my LINUX pc I have extracted a FULL Nandroid copy of my emmc to study (again I haven't used LINUX since Red Hat SuSe 7 days - so a big learning curve - Hence time required)
I am planing on restoring just the vital partions to allow a rom flash via fastboot and or recovery.
THIS may not be possible. it may be a specalist JTAG repair (and nobody does Moto g 2nd gens -yet)
I will keep you updated but its been 3 days so far and NO easy fix
Looking for a donations of dead or better still half dead xt1068 or any xt106x I'm UK based to experiment on

problem with factory reset

hello, i recently bought used droid 4, found it to be with some leftover data (sms, and such) so first thing i did was a factory reset only to
find it after a while in extact same state. weird thing is that when i factory reset it after removing some apps or changing anything at all it acts
as if i restored some backup instead of wiping device. it spams me with errors every few seconds too which is quite troublesome to say the least.
i searched the internet for an answer (still looking) to this problem but so far got nothing. i mean there are lots of ppl with similiar issue
but no real answer anywhere i looked. i thought maybe flashing some stock rom (dont wanna try anything custom yet since i got lapdock
too and havent checked if webtop works with custom roms yet). is it the right direction in my case or is there some simplier answer to my problem?
thanks in advance
update: cant root it, cant install official update through rsdlite, cant update through other unofficial ways,
it acts as if everything went fine and each time im back to square 1. it aint my first or second journey with rooting,
changing rom but im not really sure what else can i do. also rsdlite cant detect any information about device (imei,
os version, flex drm boot etc are all filled with N/A
install from sdcard also failed - signature verification failed. keeps gettin better. downloading another rom from
official moto website... not expecting anything though

what official site? use files from my page How to Use RSD Lite to flash a .XML Stock Rom (firmware)
thanks for taking interest
tried factory reset with options You mentioned unchecked, same thing as before.
i did use xml with rsdlite and zip through built in recovery.
tried to find this page i downloaded files but theres too much in yesterdays history, trying those from Your link now.
also tried to update rom ota, but of course theres an error. oh my droid runs 4.0.4, i havent mentioned it before.
also, found in the net schematics for factory cable, was thinking if its worth a shot this way:

Update zips only update specific system versions, you have to use correct one, and must be complete stock.

from what i read in this post about factory cable it says it boots phone different way than normal thats why i thought maybe
itll be able to successfully update with it. also after every reset of this droid its not a simple matter of apps coming back thru wifi.
wifi is disabled and theyre there right from the start. i can remove some widgets or apps from home screen, i can delete texts,
and after reset theyre all back where they were. its as if every change i made havent been saved. i dont even have to reset phone,
i just need to reboot it to have it all back
phone needs to be in AP Fastboot mode when flashing with rsd lite.
verify md5 checksum for xml file before flashing.
yes, it was in ap fatboot mode, didnt verify the md5 tho.
more importantly, file i downloaded from site You linked passed verification! guess what i found wasnt official updates after all...
i hope this works

is it any different than checking "erase internal storage" when reseting phone?

same story after formating internal memory.
no changes whatsoever. same homescreen, same widgets/apps present. same system version.
and of course new error every 5 seconds. guess the phone is messed up good.
talk about luck. its second droid 4 i bought. first i bought over a month ago on auction site, it was new. i paid, guy never sent it.
now this one. its like a curse
formatting internal won't wipe, user data, but will wipe backup data.
tried xml with rsdlite now.
after first reboot its supposed to go into the recovery mode right?
it went back in to ap fastboot... and after rsd transfered all the files then it went to bootloader... and now program says reboot is in process while phone sits in recovery mode...

select wipe data, then select reboot
done, nothing changed.
also, when rsd works it acts as if it doesnt wait for the phone with operations.
it writes reboot, phone starts to reboot, and long time before it boots back either in ap fastboot mode or into recovery
rsd says its already transfering files, it says reboot again (before phone even gets into fastboot or recovery after 1st reboot) and so on.

could try my Unbrick Moto device with moto-fastboot.exe
but unlikely that it will work

Unable to mount /data, fastboot doesn't seem to be able to write

Hi everyone, I'm having a lot of problems with my phone: last night, after it dropped to 0% battery life, it wouldn't charge. So i waited a while and ifinally managed to turn it on, but It wouldn't go past the Cyanogenmod logo. So i tried few things, first wiping cache, then factory reset from TWRP and I even tried the "Factory" option in the fastboot screen. Nothing worked, and it even got worse I think, TWRP says it's unable to mount /data partition and /storage partition. I don't know what caused it, and i don't remember the precise moment it became "unmountable" for the first time (since I've been trying to fix this thing for like 24 hours now).
Since i couldn't fix it via recovery, I tried looking for people who had the same problem on the internet, and I tried everything i could find. (like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2683787).
I then tried to go back to stock rom via adb and fastboot, but without success.
The main problem with fastboot is the fact that it doesn't change anything in my phone, it gives no errors when i try to flash the stock rom, but when i reboot my phone, nothing changes, or at least this is my opinion, since I still get the cyanogenmod logo, and TWRP doesn't get replaced (while it should go away, since when in the whole process of flashing the rom, i also flash recovery.img, which shouldn't be TWRP).
I tried a whole lot of other commands too, like "fastboot erase recovery", but TWRP is still there, and so is the cyanogenmod logo.
This is why i think fastboot is unable to write in my phone, but if that's the case, it should at least give errors.
So, wrapping up, my data partition seems to be corrupted, and flashing the stock rom still gets my into a bootloop (with the logo from the previous rom and TWRP still there).
Do you have any advice?
P.S: my phone is a xt1068
Are you able to pull logcat?
Logcat command works, i don't get errors in the terminal, but in the text file there's only this line : "/sbin/sh: exec: line 1: logcat: not found"
Dmesg works though, I don't know if it's helpful
"

I have same phone, you mentioned you also tried to flash stock rom without success, did you flash the partition file aswell before flashing system and the rest of files ? Check the flashfile.xml file into the stock firmware folder to make sure you not missing anything.
Code:
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
Good luck.
i'm on the same boat. It seems it's a NAND issue, but how come it happens randomly?
It seems to happen (its a bit rare, so don't get worried) when you let your battery drop to 0% and the phone suddently turn off, like what happened to the OP.

If it's a bit rare, how come there are a rather interesting quantity of posts regarding that matter? I'd like to know WHY I can't write even with fastboot. There should be a way of unlocking the NAND / partitions. Even if I try to hard brick it, it's impossible.
PS: can we someone a look at this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56608822&postcount=2
Possibly if we can force the way to QHSUSB mode, phone can be saved.

Unfortunately I didn't quite understand what that is about, if you happen to try it out let us know.
Anyway, if we don't manage to fix it, I guess I'm going to try and take it back to the store, since it is a common problem. Only problem is I'm on a custom rom and I can't even go back to stock and relock the bootloader, so I don't think they are going to replace it, but it's worth a try.
You can try by helping me to look for a circuit PDF from the board or trying it yourself.
I could try and disassemble it, but you're gonna have to wait a few days, I'm not at home and I'm gonna be back on the weekend.
As for the circuit pdf, I was only able to find videos and guides on how to disassemble it, unfortunately
Dude, no worries. Ive took the back out with all the screws, but I have nothng to make shorts with.... I'll come up with something. Take your time and keep me posted.
any news concerning this problem? i have tried searching for a manual but I did not succeed.
Anyways after finding the manual, we can short circuit the 2 capacitors there and the phone will be in qhsusb mode.
And after that ?

After that.... well.... after some research, we'll be needing singleimage.bin to use the blankflash utility for lollipop phones (mbm-ci 5.0 lollipop) so somebody can generate the singleimage.bin for us.
Once we have that, we can try to flash the phone at lowlevel to see what happens.
I will search the internets in hoping to find the schematics of this phone.
Keep me informed if you find it faster .
Cheers mate
we can connect through hangouts / etc.

[HELP] Moto X won't boot to OS after strange happenings...

Rooted, Bootloader unlocked, TWRP installed, Xposed Running. 5.0 - I did not yet update or press update ever, If I have ever accidentally allowed it to begin downloading I kill the download by deleting the file using SDMaid.
I got home, had problems with other devices, phone was on about 40% at this point. I remember hearing the phone reboot, I noticed it went into TWRP, which was strange, I restarted system > powered up > lockscreen > restart to twrp with no interaction. Phone is now getting low 21%ish. Fix permissions - because used to be the all out fix on my other devices.
Same thing again > straight into twrp.
I notice that some scripts have been ran in the twrp console. Something along the lines of Victara_en_US.zip Some red scripts I assume saying failed to update.
I assume the phone is now too low to power up.
It shows no sign of charging since leaving the last twrp reboot.
Green light in top speaker shows when attempting to power up with usb charger plugged in > nothing else happens.
With charger unplugged from phone I see my modified logo screen and the moto planet spinning before phone turns off completely. This process now repeats.
Anyone have any idea what the hell is wrong with my phone?

Get your phone into TWRP and connect it to your charger and let it charge to at least 70% Use Advanced Wipe in TWRP, select Cache and wipe that. Then see if your phone will start normally. Somehow you have downloaded the update file and it is trying to run automatically. Since your phone is modified, the update fails (and nothing is updated or changed.) The update file is in /cache so wiping that should correct the problem. You should go ahead and update to the Stagefright patched version of your ROM so you aren't having to deny the factory update all the time.

Phone still boots to a black screen. I don't understand why it would download the update let alone attempt to install it, I religiously deny the update. Also why would it have booted up normally then forced itself into TWRP? :S
What can I next? I dont mind wiping using fastboot as I managed to take all my files off the phone via twrp.
This happened to me a couple times but wiping the cache AND the dalvik cache fixed it. If it still doesn't work, I hope you have a backup because you are going to have to wipe the system and data next. Sometimes these updates like to link themselves to all the phone's partitions, and in that case you should wipe everything and restore your full system and data backup in recovery.

I wiped both the first time I tried it :-/
I don't have a system backup as a far as I am aware, need to check main pc for something like that. I had a lot of trouble with no signal after changing my phone to x1095 so I could root it etc. Just hope I don't have the same trouble again. Can i reinstall the system through twrp? Or do I need to flash via fastboot?
Whats my best option, system files wise, for fixing this?

If you dont have a backup, at this point, I don't see any other options besides formatting your data or flashing the stock firmware. Of course, don't just take my word for it, but in the future just make sure you have a working backup available.

Am I able to flash anything other than the stock 5.0? Last I checked I had converted whatever I had to the x1095. I remember everything being easier on other phones...
Yes, you can, just make sure you have the right file for the job. They are usually about 2 gigs, and they take forever to flash. Note that once you flash the file, your phone will be as if you just bought it from the store, but it always will boot if you have the corresponding build.

In TWRP, make a backup now even though it may not be useful depending on what the problem is. Then, use advanced wipe in TWRP and wipe data. If the phone will boot now, something got corrupted in data and you'll just need to set your phone up again. If the problem continues, you'll have to flash your system image. How to do this varies with the model of your phone; some models have TWRP images, others need to use fastboot files. After you flash the new system image, you can either just continue to clean setup the phone, or you can try to restore only data from the backup you made previously.

Does that include 5.1 roms? I can never seem to find x1095 5.1 roms, or anything for that matter, they are all titled with every other version.

Im trying to download stock 5.0 for now but the download is taking decades for some reason. Do you, or anyone else, recommend any roms which I can easily flash without having to worry about modem files?

Does that include 5.1 roms? I can never seem to find x1095 5.1 roms, or anything for that matter, they are all titled with every other version.

Hopefully this could provide more information for your situation?

Thank you for your help, as well as anyone else who helped me. I now have a running phone on 5.1.
How do I gain root from here? My superuser app updated and now tells me I have no binary, despite telling me to flash something only 5 minutes prior.

So you don't have root? I would suggest rooting using towelroot. Go online and search "towelroot" click on the first result, click on the lambda to download the apk, and install it. You can then open the app, and press "make it ra1n" to root your device without any reboot needed.
I had root prior to wiping and installing the 5.1 update that was linked to me. Towelroot gives me the phone not supported message.

Towel root does not work in 5.1.
To root just flash TWRP. Start TWRP. When you exit TWRP it will ask you if you want to root it. Simple.

I'm still in the "phone not responding" phase.. how did you manage to get in the bootloader from there? Tnx!
I found a chainfire autoroot IMG that rooted my phone. Found xposed too. I'm back at a fully working phone now, thank you to all who helped me.
Gotta say, the battery life on 5.1 is a hell of a lot better.

As in you can't get it to fastboot?
I left it to charge for a while, then took about 5 minutes attempting the power button volume button combo to restart and get it into fastboot.
I believe that it's something like:
Power + vol down until the phone screen flashes/green light goes off
Then
Still holding the power and volume down
Hold the vol up too
Then release the power still holding the vol up and down.
That's what worked for me. It's literally the most awkward phone I've had go button combos.
I think vol up from powered off works too.
If you mess up just hold the power and vol down again.

Canadian Note 4 N910W8: bootloop

Trying to bring back to life a Canadian Note 4 stuck in a bootloop...
Rooted. Custom recovery (TWRP 2.8.5). No problem booting into it. Download mode (Odin) works too.
Tried the basic stuff - wiping all caches, factory reset, flashing original ROM (5.1.1; Bell) from Sammobile.
Symptom: never finishes booting.
When running app optimization, somewhere between 15 and 24 app always reboots.
So, I think it is corrupted file system, partition...
Booting into recovery (TWRP), connecting through ADB, 'adb shell'...
Unmounting /data and /system, running 'e2fsck -fv' on both, no problems.
But Android still doesn't boot...
My best guess is a "bad sector" (in computer terms) on the MMC chip. How do I label it not for use?
One thing I haven't tried is repartitioning. From my reading I'd "lose" 3GB of storage.
Would not be the end of the world but would like to avoid it...
Any pointer what else could be tried? Where to look?
Thanks.
EDIT:
From what I read, the T-Mo Note 4 is the closest "sibling" to the Canadian version.
Hence, posting here. Feel free to move if this is the wrong place for it...

I9305 Bootloop. Can't mount /data and /sdcard

Hello guys. I have a GT-I9305 phone, bought in december 2012.
Software history: official 4.1.1 (for sim unlocking) --> official 4.1.2 --> amcha rom kk (tw 4.4.4).
Kernel history: stock --> stock --> agni
Everything was working fine until a few days ago. My battery started acting up, my screen sometimes would show lines of pixels of different luminosity and my phone would not connect to a mobile network. After plugging the phone into a socket, everything worked just fine, so i assumed it was the battery. Yesterday i had my phone on me, but unfortunately not my external battery. The phone started acting up, then it suddenly rebooted twice. First time it rebooted into os, while second time, it got stuck into a bootloop. I assumed it was just a battery problem so i removed the battery and when i got home i fully charged it. I tried starting the phone, but the bootloop was still there. I entered the recovery and tried flashing the "agni reset oc uv on boot fail" file, which was located in the internal memory. To my surprise, the phone was unable to mount /sdcard(internal memory), nor /data. I started documenting on the internet and found out that people who had this problem couldn't mount /efs as well, but i could.
While i was on 4.1.2, i read about the "Sudden death" syndrome which meant an eMMC failure. However, there was an app on play store that would tell you if your phone is affected by the bug, and it told me that my phone is safe (that was 2 or 3 years ago).
In ODIN, i can flash recoveries, however when i try to flash a full software package (one that always worked on my phone before), iu usually gets stuck on Get PIT for mapping, SetupConnection, or SYSTEM flash. I found a .pit on xda (m3xx_i9305.pit), which i assumed was the right one for the phone. However, when i try flashing the .pit, the process always fails with the "Re-partition operation failed." message.
Is it really possible that my eMMC is busted? Also, i have seen a thread for i9300 with an emergency recovery firmware. It included everything from pit to csc. Could somebody provide the files needed for I9305?
Thanks in advance.
UPDATE: USING TWRP i found out the damage was extended to SYSTEM, CACHE and TOMBSTONES PARTITION AS WELL.
WIPING USING make_ext4fs FUNCTION MADE MY PARTITIONS USABLE AGAIN ( all but TOMBSTONES). NOW I NEED SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW I CAN USE THE make_ext4fs function TO FORMAT TOMBSTONES PARTITION AGAIN. SOMEBODY PLEASE PROVIDE ME WITH THE NEEDED DATA. THE LOG IN TWRP says: Failed to mount '/tombstones' (invalid argument)

No luck. I ended up swapping the motherboard. Sorry for the late response.
