Cheap VR Kit for Note 5 - Galaxy Note5 Accessories

I picked up a cheap VR headset from Amazon. Figured it was cheaper than 199 for the Samsung one. It is a pretty cool gadget to play with but I'm not sure how well it would do with long term usage in that videos need to be in 3D SBS format (Someone correct me if I'm wrong).
I think if the technology gets a bit more popular we'd see more apps for it, but in any case here's my video of it in action.

Its not released yet. The larger issue is Samsung is not promoting it witch leaves many of us wondering how long they will delay the november release they talked about at MWC.

Cheaper, slimmer Google Nexus 7 rumored for Q1 2013

Google may be readying a revamped model of the middle sibling in its Nexus line of Android devices for as early as the first quarter of 2013, if the supply-chain snoops at Taiwanese tech news site DigiTimes are correct.

Well what do we think?
Not thinking much of anything to be honest.. good for them? I'll remain happy with my 1st gen 16Gb mobel.
A cheaper version is always welcome.

I could see the Nexus tablet line having the following:
A cheap ($99 seems low, but okay) 7". A higher quality 7" ($200-$250?). High quality 10".
While I have little money for toys, and I like paying low prices as much as anyone, I don't necessarily want a Nexus device that's had every cost corner cut. Especially things like storage and ram, which the current Nexus 7 seems to have slow parts.
Perhaps Google is trying to entice the masses further by lowering the price of a decent device, but I hope they realize that you can't make money off being the cheapest on the market. You might sell more, but your margins are smaller and your support costs are way higher because of cut corners and the sheer amount of people owning one.
I just see a lot of people being disappointed with this new device as you know they will compare it with the first Gen n7. Sometimes cheaper isn't always better.
Sent from my ThunderBolt using Tapatalk 2
I can see why they would want to offer a cheaper N7-type device, but my biggest concern is supply chain issues. The current Nexus 7 is the only device that hasn't had any severe supply issues from the play store in the past few months.... but that's probably mostly because it's already been out for 6 months.
I'm happy enough for my current N7
We have more than enough cheap low-end tablets on the market nowadays..

They probably saved money on production by leaving off the bluetooth hardware, since it doesn't work with their software anyways.

That's one way to gain market share, N7 were practically sold out everywhere in town over the holidays - DH got herself an iPad2 X'mas 2011 and the iOS people are releasing #5 in March or Spring of 2013 ...

One would be paying more for a used/pre-owned N7 in excellent condition than buying the newest model, cheaper & slimmer. Hmmm :highfive: :fingers-crossed:
Maybe I should return mine to Staple as there is NO restocking fee & no questions asked - and wait for the newer one, 4.1.2 is such a mess in stock form anyway, LOL.
This reminds me of Samsung. They just made a half ass 4in budget phone to sell (S3 Mini). Their intent was to provide a phone for individuals who do not need a power house. The problem is the individuals who review phones like power houses. In many reviews Samsung was ridiculed for making the phone (even though it was meeting their intent). Hopefully Google is not treated the same way.
I can see the headline now, "iPad Mini ($349) dominates against new Google Nexus 7 ($99) .... Google stands no chance".

You're so right, I really like these Nexus phones (4 especially) and Galaxy S3, but the screen size puts me off - it's to big. Gimme a nice 4,2 inch with a decent resolution and I'm sold, but yes, such phones get lost in reviews because they don't stand a chance competing with 6" super triple HD 3D Gorilla Retina screen, 16core CPU and more RAM than my PC has.
I already have a decent tablet (N7), all I want is a decent dual, maybe cheap quad core, ~4" Nexus phone (once I got N7 I realized what android is really supposed to look like, because CM is not stable enough for me to run on my Xperia, so I kept it stock).
Of course Nexus line is only top notch, playing in the big league of S4 and iPhone6, so yes if they released a normal 4" nexus phone, headlines would say "where's your god now Android fans, always you have been bashing iPhones 'small' screen, now you're buying one yourself".
Nexus 7 is cheap enough as it is, we don't need another 800*480 7" tablet, that you can get in the Pharmacy (seriously, I saw some cheap tPads in local pharmacy), make a cheap Nexus phone!
Any news about it?
I'm on a low budget (about $150) and was hoping to get that cheap nexus 7 if it's released
It would be certainly better than those nasty china tablets..
99$?!

Personally, I'll stick with my current N7, it still gets the job done nicely.
Blargh, I need a new tablet meow!! I don't want to wait until July to replace my crappy PlayBook, but it looks like I have to
Nice refresher but I don't see the need to replace anything for a different processor. It did mention smaller bevels so perhaps they are throwing in a 1080p screen.
If that is the case, we'll basically have a 7" version of the Nexus 10.
S4 + 1080p + HDMI out? + Same Price Point... eh
I could see the benefits. Is it going to be running Key Lime Pie out of the box? Might be another selling point.

When the new ones come out, our first gen will drop in price. For a used N7, you'd be lucky to get about $100 for it.... unless you screw over a family member or friend into paying more.
At that price, I'd almost just rather keep the damn thing and repurpose it. Perhaps a dedicated Toilet Reader, Bed side TV Player, Car Dock, Kitchen Monitor/TV/VideoPlayer, anything else, etc.
I have an old Sprint Galaxy Tab 7" running CM10 and runs like a top. I just can't find myself getting rid of it for the low price I'd have to sell it for.
which version should I buy?
Today I was going to buy a N7... and then they come up with this rumor. What do you guys recommend? Should I wait for this new version? or buy the actual one right away? If the only new features are the screen and the processor I think It's not worth the wait... but what if it comes with expandable storage, or a rear camera? What do you think?

Yeah same thing here, I wanted to buy it as a present for my birthday next week. If it will be released in July, I think it is maybe worth to wait, but since I'm from the Czech Republic, it won't be available in another 3-6 months I think the price of the "old" Nexus 7 can't drop much, since it is really cheap now, so I guess I will buy it anyway.

I was thinking the same, maybe it will be released in July, but it will take too long to arrive to other countrys. So I'll just buy mine today. Anyways, I don't care too much about the screen resolution and the Tegra3 is just enough for me. Now if the new model would come with a rear camera, that would be a killer feature.
I could imagine there will be a rush like when 1st gen and Nexus 4 came out, so I got the current one and planned to get the 2nd gen then let my family use the good old one, the combined cost is still lower than a full-sized iPad though.
shrinking bezel huh? 8" display please and better speakers. A better DAC would be nice also as the audio on the Nexus 7 is pure garbage. The fact that they are using a Qualcomm SOC this time around gives hope.
And as much as I would love a external memory card slot this is Google we're talking about. I'd settle for a micro HDMI port, I use my Nexus 10 now for presentations and the HDMI out makes it all possible.
In not upgrading unless they have some form of TV-Out out of the box. The Nexus 7 is running perfectly for me and it'll get latest Android version anyway. But if the price is good I might sell the current one to upgrade.

Damn my birthday is in July now I don't know if I should get gs4 or the n7 2nd gen
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
There is NO WAY i'm buying Second Gen N7 because first gen is still a beast at browsing, gaming, watching movies etc.
Just because it has higher resolution and a little bit better chip i don't think its necessary to buy this new one.
And what worries me most is the price, i mean come on even First Gen has been heavily hardware skinned down just for a lower price of 200$ (no back camera, no official Gorilla glass, no Dual-Band Miracast, etc.) so imagine what we will get for a 149$ price...i don't want to even think about it lol.
I ain't getting anything new in the next 4 years. The next tab I buy will probably have Tegra 8 or something. Can't be sure though. In the meantime, the N7 is storming through every task I throw at it.
Hopefully ASUS doesn't f*** this up again with the screen lift issues.
It's great that they are switching to snapdragon krait SoC because Tegra is a slow chip with weak gpu and single-channel memory, not to mention its high battery consumption.
I'd also like a more efficient display for better battery life.

Man I'm a little unimpressed by the new N7. I was hoping for the S600 chip, not the S4 Pro. I know the S800 is just around the corner but I guess its too soon for budget devices to have the S600.

I'll be buying a Chromecast.
The fact that they also released the SDK for Chrome cast and that google is beta testing a google chrome mirroring feature has all but sold me on this. The potential is great with this device, to the point where I feel like selling my iMito QX1 android stick. I tend to use my android mini pc for streaming video and surfing the web anyways so this would be a great replacement.

erm...
from Anandtech:
"The new Snapdragon 600 is also known by the part number APQ8064T, and was formerly known as the Snapdragon S4 Pro."
You get Krait, you get the same GPU, everything but the name...
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6568/qualcomm-krait-400-krait-300-snapdragon-800
How can people expect a top of the line processor from a $230 tablet? OK, maybe 600 isn't top of the line anymore, but still. $230 is extremely cheap. Especially when you consider the quality of the tablet. The crappy Chinese tablets cost about $150, and trust me, they're not worth a single penny.
And I'm pretty sure the 600 gets better benchmarks than the S4 pro. Too bad the only way I'll be getting this tablet is if I buy a network hard drive and I can get this to stream audio/video/photos off of it. There is no use of a tablet that has no SD card slot without that, as I have learned with my 16 GB iPad. Also, I don't know if I can live without boomsound anymore. Not just for music, but for watching videos. Front facing speakers really should be standard, I don't know why the Nexus doesn't have them, but at least the speakers are stereo.

Research the part numbers before you go flying off at the keyboard there. You sound like a "brand" shopper more than anything else right now.
The S4 Pro variant (a.k.a. the S600) in the Nexus 7 is more than enough to accomplish what this tablet's designed for: a solidly performing, low-priced device with no muss and no fuss. The Nexus device line generally provides a "benchmark" of sorts for what the average Android device should be (although given the market, that usually tends to put them in the upper half of the field on their release). They've generally pushed one new technology, be that cost or the display.
If you want a "pro" device to handle your needs, then don't buy Nexus. But if it doesn't fit your use case, then don't buy it instead of whining like the spoiled child at Christmastime.

I think this is the first post in this forum.
Definitely would like at least 32 GB. Leaning more towards the 8.4". We have a 10" tablet, and it is just too big to use one handed. And by use, I mean hold.
The weight of both tablet is relatively low. The AMOLED screen makes for a thin tablet. The ahead-of-its-time GT-P6800 7.7 tablet is amazingly thin and solid. It's still a good tablet for media playing and web surfing.
I just pre ordered the 10.5 32gb version from Best buy, I wonder how they pulled the exclusive with the 32gb. I'm in the process of putting some sample files on a flash drive to test on one of the display models. Best buy also has the bronze and white book covers for 39.99 rather than 69.99. Glad I decided to wait for the release and didn't open my Note Pro, it's already on it's way back to Samsung.
Edit: So I went and tested two video files at the local Best Buy, Pacific Rim 1080p 12gb mkv high encoding 19 quality and Timescapes mp4 2560x1440. The picture on this tablet is amazing especially the nature scenes in the Timescapes file. The stock player was able to player both files with no skips or jitters.
I pre ordered the 8.4 from Future Shop (Canada). I am keeping my Note Pro 12.2 as my home unit, the 8.4 as my traveler (Read in bed) and Nexus 5 as my phone. I have no problems with a 16 gig unit. I used the savings and bought a 64 gig microsd. After being burned by Samsung in the past ie.. software updates and coming from a Nexus background I was hesitant to purchase the 12.2 but I have to admit that it has been a nice experience. The first tablet I haven't bothered to root. I think the 8.4 will be even better. Of course I will be keeping my eyes on this year's Google IO conference just in case they mythical Google 8 is announced. I just need to find a case and glass screen protector.
I am really tempted by this new tab
Especially since I sold my Nexus 7 2013 FHD, I really would like to replace that with the new 8.4 Tab S. I miss reading books and browsing the web on my couch or bed. I don't really care for the aesthetics mainly due to the placement of the buttons, it's just weird having the phone layout of buttons on a huge tablet, I prefer to have them on the sides of the device. Not a deal breaker though. I'm just torn on whether to buy this 8.4 through amazon as I have a gift card there for 300 bucks or save a little more and wait for the new Nexus 8 or Nexus 10 if they ever announce them. I have a galaxy note 3 and being a phablet I thought it would be sufficient enough in size to not miss my nexus 7 but I was wrong. The one thing I hate about Samsung is the bloatware and difficulty in rooting the device due to knox and voiding the warranty. I'd prefer to wait for a tablet using either the tegra 4 K1(32 bit) chip or the tegra k1 (64 bit) chip because the games on it would be fabulous, but like I said I am just itching to replace my tablet I dearly miss and this samsung galaxy tab S looks very promising...Woe me
for some reason the smartwatches here in bahrain and saudi are more expensive than in the US but the phones and phablets are cheaper, wonder which range this tab s prices will be here
I preordered this online on bestbuy (in canada) because when I went to do it in stores their system didn't let them help me. is this normal? anyway if you preorder from bestbuy canada they give you the folio case for free as well I believe and theres a lexar 64gb thats on sale for 70 bucks off until the 19th...
Noticed BestBuy, Futureshop, Staples in Canada all bumped their dates back to July 4th right away. Was saying June 26 for the first day or two. Amazon still says June 26.
I wonder if it will get bumped again. I've had horrible experience ordering online from bestbuy and futureshop. I'd try staples next if they had the free cover offer too.
I ordered the 10.5 white from Samsung store for $499, including Samsung's book cover case worth $69.99 as a gift... They promised 1 July delivery.

What color folio case did you select?
On both bestbuy.ca and futureshop.ca, only 3 colors (brown, blue, and white) are available for free.
When I add the charcoal black one to my cart, it shows up as full price.
I was going to go into the store to ask for the black one, but your posts makes it sound like they won't be able to do much.

I started my tablet buying addiction with Chinese tablets - lol. I have owned a number of Chinese tablets , TV sticks and TV boxes. My advice is to save yourself a lot of grief and buy a name brand tablet from a recognized retailer. There are a number of issues to consider. 1) The RK3288 looks like a good chip but Rockchip is notorious for producing buggy versions of Android. I know I currently own two Rockchip devices and if it wasn't for a dedicated user base debugging and producing custom ROM's, the devices would be useless. 2) If your tablet has a hardware defect you would have to ship it all the way back to China - usually at your own expense. It could take months to get it sorted out. 3) Chinese manufacturers tend not to support devices once they are originally released and since these Chinese tablets don't usually appear on XDA you are left on your own. 4) Many Chinese Companies quickly disappear for no notice. 5) You'll be kicking yourself for not spending that extra money for that great Tab S display.
If you do by Chinese then Geekbuying is a reliable place. They have always been good to me.
Hope this help,
D

Staples.ca is offering the Black one only for free. Not selectable. Go figure.
I just bought a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition. It's really nice and I actually like the S-Pen more than I thought I would... however, I'm thinking of returning it to get a Tab S instead.
From what I see, the specs are really close between the two tablets. Main differences appear to be the AMOLED screen and slightly thinner/lighter Tab S ... but then I lose the S-Pen. Both AMOLED and scLCD screens seem to perform nicely, so that's a matter of preference I guess. I have a Galaxy S5 and the scLCD on the Note side-by-side to my S5 AMOLED screen looks pretty close.
Thoughts? Do you think the Tab S will be that much better than something like the Note 2014?
Thanks
