Man I'm a little unimpressed by the new N7. I was hoping for the S600 chip, not the S4 Pro. I know the S800 is just around the corner but I guess its too soon for budget devices to have the S600.
Chrome cast looks great. I will be getting one.
What are your impressions?

I'll be buying a Chromecast.
The fact that they also released the SDK for Chrome cast and that google is beta testing a google chrome mirroring feature has all but sold me on this. The potential is great with this device, to the point where I feel like selling my iMito QX1 android stick. I tend to use my android mini pc for streaming video and surfing the web anyways so this would be a great replacement.

I'm pretty sure it uses WiFi because if it uses WiFi direct doesn't that mean that the device that is going to stream it can't be on WiFi. I think it uses the cloud

erm...
from Anandtech:
"The new Snapdragon 600 is also known by the part number APQ8064T, and was formerly known as the Snapdragon S4 Pro."
You get Krait, you get the same GPU, everything but the name...
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6568/qualcomm-krait-400-krait-300-snapdragon-800
How can people expect a top of the line processor from a $230 tablet? OK, maybe 600 isn't top of the line anymore, but still. $230 is extremely cheap. Especially when you consider the quality of the tablet. The crappy Chinese tablets cost about $150, and trust me, they're not worth a single penny.
And I'm pretty sure the 600 gets better benchmarks than the S4 pro. Too bad the only way I'll be getting this tablet is if I buy a network hard drive and I can get this to stream audio/video/photos off of it. There is no use of a tablet that has no SD card slot without that, as I have learned with my 16 GB iPad. Also, I don't know if I can live without boomsound anymore. Not just for music, but for watching videos. Front facing speakers really should be standard, I don't know why the Nexus doesn't have them, but at least the speakers are stereo.

Research the part numbers before you go flying off at the keyboard there. You sound like a "brand" shopper more than anything else right now.
The S4 Pro variant (a.k.a. the S600) in the Nexus 7 is more than enough to accomplish what this tablet's designed for: a solidly performing, low-priced device with no muss and no fuss. The Nexus device line generally provides a "benchmark" of sorts for what the average Android device should be (although given the market, that usually tends to put them in the upper half of the field on their release). They've generally pushed one new technology, be that cost or the display.
If you want a "pro" device to handle your needs, then don't buy Nexus. But if it doesn't fit your use case, then don't buy it instead of whining like the spoiled child at Christmastime.
Thanks to everyone who gave me information regarding s4 pro vs s600. For me the real issue now is the lack of sd lol I know here we go again

Hey XDA community, I've been coming and going alot lately but I got tons of headaches off this so i thought let's see what you guys think,
I was offered a free ipad 3 from my brother, against getting a N7 from my out pocket, I has an ipod 4g and HTC explorer, so am not a fan or a
hater for any of those platforms actually I love them both equally plus, they are almost identical when it comes to apps availabilty, I know the ipad
might have a slight edge in frames in that area, now onto the most important part, I'll use it mainly for ebooks reading as am studying Comp.
Science and am a gamer web browsing .. ofc ! ( again no hate for the 7-in screen ) and please don't point to the "issues massacre" that's going on
about the N7 althought RMA is not an option for me if anything wrong goes on ...
long post, sry
What's with the crazy font and centering? Makes your post difficult to read.
Get the nexus 7. Compared to the iPad, n7 is just more convenient to hold and type in terms of weight and size and more portable. The size is good enough for reading also at least for me.

Can you get both?
If in your position I would probably try and decide which size device would suit me better.... The bigger iPad is less portable and harder to use as a regular e-reader, but might be better for browsing and textbooks with diagrams and pictures.. The Nexus is more portable and a great all rounder (I am doing an IT degree and have no problems reading my textbooks.
I personally detest Apple's business practices and would never buy one of their devices, but their products are solid and you probably can't go wrong either way.

you've got a good point, reading text about source code might get ugly on the N7 while going back and forth ...
about the "solid" thing, I've done a jailbreak on one of these babies, and the thing got re-springing every once and a while, while the N7 actually begs you to customize it lol

That's not a biased response at all.
@OP- I own both, and both are great devices in their own regard. The screen on the iPad is unparalleled, it has a ton of awesome games, and a bunch of great productivity apps. The Nexus 7 has the customizability, and a great form factor, plus all of Google's great cloud services. I take my N7 with me, and use the iPad at home. I think the 7" is a much better size for portability, and it's the perfect size for gaming, but unfortunately the iPad just trumps Android with the shear number of high quality games available. The N7 is also a better size for reading too. If it comes down to getting an iPad 3 for free or actually buying the N7, then I would take the iPad no question. If you were going to have to spring for either, then it would be a toss up and I would lean towards the N7. If I was in your shoes though, I would take the free iPad and buy an N7

I know for me personally, the ipad is too big. I like the 7 inch form factor, and the nexus 7 is designed to for portability and convenience. Just depends what your looking for I suppose. Honestly I'm not sure why anyone needs a bigger tablet but that's just me.

Ironically I sold my iPad 3 earlier today.
Initially I bought the Nexus 7 in addition to the iPad but since owning it I just haven't put it down. Yes the iPad has more polished apps but the sheer power, flexibility and portability of the N7 can't be beaten. I found I simply couldn't justify keeping the iPad!

Play games
Watch Vidoes anywhere
Have Android on a big screen
????
Profit?
None of these answers where convincing and so I wanted to ask the community over here as many of you would have tablets.
Thanks
I use mine for a little bit of everything I'm a huge reader so mostly books. I have a nexus 7 good luck with whatever you get
And if you wanted an android with a huge screen get a galaxy note lol

Tablets are first and foremost media consumption devices. They are terrible for productivity unless you get something of the transformer line and cannot play many high end games. Internet browsing, light games, and movies/videos are what tablets do best. They are the portability step in between ultrabooks and smartphones.

Is the Nexus 7 screen big enough? I think the iPad's 9.6 inch is too big, and I haven't played with Nexus 7 till now. Does anyone know a shop where I can play with it? I tried Staples, Fry's and Best Buy and none of them have it on display.
So everyone just bought a tablet to do the same stuff their phones do?

Bigger screen. The difference between a 4 inch screen and a 7 inch screen is huge.
Like the title says, anyone see anything so far that completely blows away the N4? There are quite a few brands I am not familiar with and am wondering if they take as long to get updates like samsung, htc, etc. If a phone had significantly better specs but also got quickly updated would price be the only advantage the N4 had?
There are no major flagship phones being announced as CES. That really isn't the show for mobile.
What is the show for mobile then? I saw a few from CES that looked like it would be that manufacturers flagship.
Just the Sony Xperia Z. But everyone who's done a comparison with that phone vs Nexus 4 was a little :silly:
I dont think the Xperia Z will get any faster updates than the Nexus 4. It will promise the consumers, but in the end not provide them with the results.
Design looks cool for it. I still prefer the Nexus 4 over that. The camera sensors on Son'y phones aren't that great even pushing 13 megapixels.
The nexus 4 has been murdered by the new krait 400 that is 75% faster and the tegra 4 with 72 GPUs. These me chips make me want to sell this phone.

Stick to one and buy the next new thing 1-2 years later.
The Nexus 4 will handle the next 3 updates easily as well as new games.

True, and they wonder why they are doing bad in the smartphone era. Maybe if they brought some of their high end lineups from Japan to other parts of the world, they'd be able to hold up to Samsung and others.

At any rate for any real good phone ever get announced at CES? Usually ces guarentees a bust. The xperia ion was a big phone at CES last year, but by the time it came out, it was old news and much weaker than the competition. I admit, i'm an htc fanboy for many years. Heck, this website was born from an htc device. I am waiting on the note 3 as a secondary device (to mount in the car and use as a general tablet like device while keeping my one as my main handset due to size). If htc would make something like the note, 6- 6.5 inch screen etc., i'd be all over it. I'm starting this thread as sort of a petition for such a device. I'd also value any opinions but please keep it constructive. As soon as this becomes a "my samsung beats your htc beats your iphone beats your nexus" discussion, it will be closed by moderators and rightfully so. Try to keep it positive and see how many votes we can get FOR such a device. If you hate htc, buy a samsung and have a fabulous day!

I am a galaxy note user and thinking about my next device too. I would love to see a bigger HTC One, even though Note 3 will be overwhelming, I guess. The One is just amazing. And a newer HTC One multimedia giant with nice speakers 'sounds' even better ...
For me, it will depend mainly on design (hopefully no plastic-based Note 3) and if HTC can imitate nice features like multi window or air view (or/and build up other ones).

There are rumours all over the internet about a so-called "HTC One Max" - a 6" version of the One. I can't think of any better middle-ground between phone and tablet as I think the HTC One is a truly gorgeous device. Now if they make a tablet that is similar then I'll wee in my pants, change them and go to the shop to purchase it immediately.

Like I said, it's all rumours at the minute, but here's an article...

I'm sure they are but if there are rumors, there's a possible market for it. It seems like a risk for them right now but if the one is bringing them back , and i hope it is, they may get back in the game. They're getting atention with the one. Pa 3+ is being officially released on it soon. Do you by chance remember the htc advantage?

I don't care what they call it, with snapdragon 800 and an sd slot i'm in. It does appear they've been working on a phablet regardless.

It needs to have:
- 32GB or above MicroSD!!! If not then never mind.
- Full HD (no more halfwitted 720/800 junk. Enough with the 2001 graphics.)
- Snapdragon 800
- Pen support. It's hard to beat the Wacom-supported Spen.
- 3GB or more RAM.
For me to consider it over the Note 3. The HTC One was never a serious contender for me, because 90% of the time I do not have an active WiFi connection, and I need the large extended storage space. (You try doing 6 hours a day by train without a large pack of decent film to watch.)

I admit it was tough for me to go with a32g device. I worked it out though as I'm still using the evo lte in the car for media nav hands freedialing texting etc. That's where the phablet's going whether htc or Samsung. As long as it has a card slot 16 gig is not a problem for me. 2 meg ram is more than enough on the one but more would still be fantastic. That's where the real performance improvements come in. I'll trade 4 extra cores for a gig of ram any day.

No removable battery?
No external sdcard support?
Locked bootloader?
Thanks...but....No thanks.
I'll stick with my S3 and S4 and look into the S5 when it comes out.
(Yes, the ATT and VZW variants of the S4 have locked bootloaders....I'm on T-Mobile...doesn't affect me (regardless of what my sig says ))

Most phones come with locked bootloader. Anyhow this isn't a comparison of the one and s3/4. I'm looking for people who WANT an htc phablet the rumors of which imply a removable micro sd fyi.

Not comparing. Simply saying "no more HTC"
(This coming from someone that owned MANY HTC devices)

I cracked the back on my N4 today, and with all the new about the Moto X does anyone think it's worth me waiting to grab one from the Play store when they release that version? Or should I just get another N4? I haven't found any comparison benchmarks.
I just posted my thoughts on this in the other thread so I might as well share it with you:

Is the front glass broke as well? If not I would just order the back cover and replace it. If you do make sure you order one with the NFC antenna if that is a must for you.

I had seem some references in my RSS feeds that it wouldn't be available in the Play store sometime soon. Ars suspects that it will be 2-300 from the Store as well.
If I had a good, non-broken, Nexus I wouldn't think about changing. I'm only looking because I need to purchase a phone anyway.

No but the crack goes down the housing along the bottom too. I was at a client and leaned over a wall forgetting it was in my shirt pocket. I'm lucky it didn't totally shatter when it fell.
I'm quite interested in how they rewrote the entire Linux base to run natively on the ARM instruction set. We may see unprecedented improvement in the delay in touch response that is seen on every Android device to date.
The voice recognition also seems like a massive push, even on the hardware side. I hope that can come to the Nexus 4, but I'm worried for battery life on that front. The X doesn't have the most powerful main SoC, but it looks like it will be a solid performer.
Not that I don't love the Nexus 4. I also love new contenders!

Well with the other cores in the computing system dedicated to voice commands and sensors won't that alleviate the s4 to perform more efficiently?

It should let the S4 sit at idle for longer periods of time.

Exactly my thoughts. Which is mainly why I thought that it would remain a solid performer. With all the other cores dedicated to performing other tasks, the S4 should be able to do main computing tasks quite fast. It remains to be seen how powerful that GPU is, however. But with all that optimization, though, it should provide an awesome experience!

I have to say that the Nexus 4 takes it just because of the price. The moto X is awesome but I would have hoped for it to be available sooner and more affordable but I totally understand the pricing. After all Motorola is still an OEM just like Samsung and LG and HTC, the difference is they are owned by google now ( no pun intended). Since they are still an OEM they must release phones just like any other OEM and that is via carriers unlike the nexus devices.
Honestly? I think Moto X is waaaaay cooler than Nexus 4...

Yes its cooler but is it 300$ more cooler than the N4? I don't think so... ( the off contract price is 575$ - 625$ depending of storage)

Yeah, I know... i'm not talking about price point here... And Moto said it would be sold in Play Store as a "Play Edition" device... so i'm expecting something like USD 499 or USD 599...

Yes a play store version will be available but I doubt it'll be customizable like the regular version, also t probably wont have the features the regular one has.
In theory it shouldn't have the same features if it becomes one of the "pure" devices, because it will be "pure android" so unless they push the features that it has like voice activation over to the 4.3 stream it shouldn't have them. That would be a big setback as far as I'm concerned it's a very nicely designed device and I like the customization, but there is a reason why we have N4s and not Samsung Galaxys.

They could just push an update to Google Search (Google Now) to support the new chip on the Moto X, responsible for the voice commands...
I'm disappointed at the price but in terms of raw power, the 2 krait 300 cores in x should be close to the performance of the n4. That means it also gets ddr3 ram etc. Im not a real big amoled fan but the partial off screen notifications... If its truly off unlike the galaxy nexus screen, it should be nice. Time will tell. When will someone actually review this thing?
The biggest thing I care about is performance to battery ratio. I underclock and try to optimize most of my devices. My nexus 4 runs Trinity kernel in dual core mode and only 1024 MHz most of the time because not much needs the whole enchilada of power with the bandwidth of these new phones and loads of ram. It seems like moto is trying to go the apple route with usability and long battery life etc. 6 hours on screen out of the box with very little drain should be the goal of all these phones when on mobile data.
They are probably shooting themselves in the foot though delaying the 32gb version outside of att. The whole hype of customization and all those links to lock it down on one carrier. Pretty foolish when you think of their exclusivity of good phones with Verizon in the past contributed to their decline.
Mildly disappointed but still holding out hope till the first real reviews come out.

There's already a Moto X thread which is borderline off topic. The mark manning Nexus 4 vs Any other phone thread is probably where this discussion should take place.
