Any phone announced at CES that destroy the N4? - Nexus 4 General

Like the title says, anyone see anything so far that completely blows away the N4? There are quite a few brands I am not familiar with and am wondering if they take as long to get updates like samsung, htc, etc. If a phone had significantly better specs but also got quickly updated would price be the only advantage the N4 had?

There are no major flagship phones being announced as CES. That really isn't the show for mobile.

What is the show for mobile then? I saw a few from CES that looked like it would be that manufacturers flagship.

Just the Sony Xperia Z. But everyone who's done a comparison with that phone vs Nexus 4 was a little :silly:
I dont think the Xperia Z will get any faster updates than the Nexus 4. It will promise the consumers, but in the end not provide them with the results.
Design looks cool for it. I still prefer the Nexus 4 over that. The camera sensors on Son'y phones aren't that great even pushing 13 megapixels.

The nexus 4 has been murdered by the new krait 400 that is 75% faster and the tegra 4 with 72 GPUs. These me chips make me want to sell this phone.

Sony has botched updates before. The Nexus 4 will definitely get updates first, if the Xperia Z even gets them.
Samsung didn't announce a new phone, I don't even believe HTC is there. Asus may have something.

Current technology will always get murdered by newer technology.
Stick to one and buy the next new thing 1-2 years later.
The Nexus 4 will handle the next 3 updates easily as well as new games.
My Incredible is rocking 4.2.1 rom. Everything works on it, but i use it as a Google Music stream machine and the N4 as a daily phone.

True, and they wonder why they are doing bad in the smartphone era. Maybe if they brought some of their high end lineups from Japan to other parts of the world, they'd be able to hold up to Samsung and others.
Asus i think has a new 7in tablet and something else i read.

I'm planning on upgrading in 2014/15 but the power gap is much larger now than before. Tegra 3 to krait was like 360 to Wii u however s4 to krait 400 is core2duo to i5.

thought you were going to upgrade this year haha,
I mean, core2 duo isn't that bad vs i5. I can run all my design applications + 2012 Solidworks application easily.
2014 will be a interesting year for the smartphone wars. Sprint will go away and Softbank will enter US market w/ supposedly 2500mhz band.

I hate all tegra chips. I doubt the 4 will be anygood either.
Lets not even talk about the lack of games for Andriod. I still aint seen a game thats worth a damn, and none of them are graphically intense.....
But ok we all seem to need 50 core death phones. With fricken lazers on thier back sides.

The show for mobile is Mobile World Congress scheduled on February 25-28.
Also some large manufacturers can host an individual event for a single flagship release.

I haven't seen any real phones announced yet, but who cares it'll just be more carrier crap complete with locked bootloaders, outdated versions of android with skins. And the new snapdragons and tegra 4 are beasts but I have a hard time believing at this point you'd actually notice a difference, as everything is literally instant on the nexus 4

Not in the states. At least not for a reasonable price.
At any rate for any real good phone ever get announced at CES? Usually ces guarentees a bust. The xperia ion was a big phone at CES last year, but by the time it came out, it was old news and much weaker than the competition. IMO the best phones come out in the second half of the year, the filler crap gets announced at CES

They did announce a phone with some sandpaper taped to its back.
Word on the street is it has the potential to destroy the N4.

Factor in price and constant updates and I don't think anything comes close. A faster processor and other things like that are less important.

Nexus 4 Backlash

I'm really not understanding why so many people dislike the Nexus 4. Is it due to the terrible launch? And why keep comparing it to the Galaxy S3? Vanilla Android and Touchwiz both have their ups and downs. Lack of LTE really shouldnt be an issue unless you are on Verizon. For $350 (including tax of course ) you get a phone with a quadcore processor,Adreno 320 GPU, fully unlocked, and timely updates. Not to mention the amount of money you wiuld save getting a prepaid service no contract.
Sorry if I made a few mistakes. This is my first post in this forum and just received my Nexus 4. Any advice would be helpful for future threads.

I have a note 2, gs3, gs2, galaxy nexus, droid RAZR, iPhone 5, and a nexus 4. Guess which one is my favorite? The nexus 4!!

No not here. I see it in numerous forums and threads. People bash the nexus 4 before they bash the S3. Its being compared to the S4 and that phone hasn't even came out yet!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I don't know, people like to nitpick. My problem with the Nexus 4 is the same as the Galaxy Nexus I previously owned, its never 100% perfect, even after an RMA, there is still a bit of black light bleeding, a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, my wireless charging orb stopped working, had to RMA that, and so on, the Nexus line to me has always had some flaws in terms of hardware reliability.
That being said, the Nexus 4 is among the most beautiful phones, up there with the high end Xperia phones, and with amazing hardware, so asides from the hardware imperfections that one might encounter if unlucky, its a great phone.
I cannot think of a single phone other than the new Xperia (if aosp) that is coming out that I would trade my Nexus 4 for.

you just might be right sir. This is actually my first nexus device. I honestly was really close in getting the S3 until I saw this technological beauty being demoed at a local T-Mobile store. I swear I heard the phone calling my name lol. I immediately forgot all about the S3 and purchased the N4 full price.
Where is this so called backlash at?

Well maybe not a backlash, but numerous threads and forums bash the nexus 4 as if Google completely messed up the device. Lack of LTE, lack of storage, glass back (guess they forgot about the "rave" reviews about iPhone 4 hardware), phone isn't thin enough, etc. CNET gave the phone a 3.5 out of 5 while S3 got a 4 out of 5. They gave the Galaxy Nexus a 5 out of 5 and the N4 is a complete upgrade! So a removable battery on Galaxy Nexus makes it perfect?

Don't pay attention to ***** ratings.. Nothing but a popularity contest.. Read the conclusions and see if the `cons' are anything you deem a problem. They focused on lack of LTE which is a legit gripe no matter how you spin it and how well HSPA+ works.. It is a technology that is sort expected now a days. But.. Unless it personally affects you.. Then it doesn't matter..
They also focused on calling it "uninspiring" "not expanding the Nexus brand".. That's when I stop taking them seriously.. When reviewers start getting all Martha Stewart on you.. It's time to stop reading.
It is just not flawless: back glass, which can crack in any day, noise from earpiece, non-vibrant screen - these spoil impression from the phone. It is my first nexus devise (I had xperia Ion before it) and I expected much more from it. I still haven't decided which one to sell - Nexus or Ion. Ion is flawless except that hardware quite old.
And that's what makes the difference between the nexus 4 and everything else. It will constantly get updates before any other phone. I can totally understand the glass back being fragile.

I'm not trying to sound like a fanboy with this being my first nexus device. But honestly where else are you going to find an unlocked top tier phone with high end specs for $300. Put in perspective, a galaxy note 2 costs $299 with a two year contract. That's not even the full price of actual phone which is over $600. Over $600 for a phone that may or may not get Key Lime Pie. The nexus is guaranteed to get it and faster than anybody else.

For me it doesn't matter how much it costs - I could buy iphone 5, but I don't like iOS. Price is just a good bonus. Having top hardware specs is good, but will not you feel disappointed if your back glass is cracked? And this state of waiting and checking if it is cracked or not... I hate being in situation like this. Maybe in some time I will stop thinking of this. Will not you be disappointed if you had another device with worse specs, but with so much better display?
That's a good question...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I'm not saying cost should be a factor, but rather value. Look at what u get for such a low cost. I can understand the glass back being an issue. But I'd rather have the back shatter then the display itself. Luckily I have a case. Either way I would be disappointed. But which would really tick u off, shattering a phone $700 or shattering a phone $300?

I'm not sure as of yet. From what I've read it hasnt been that much of an issue unless you're doing extreme multitasking. So far Ive played Need for Speed Most Wanted while listening to music and it hasnt shut down yet. It does heat up though but not bad enough to shut the entire phone down.

Noone will put a 4k display to 5" phone, thats plain stupid so this one you may drop.
Snapdragon 800 will be more likely used in tablets, so i also dont expect it to be in next Nexus device , it will most probably will be SD600 like in other top models this year.
Ill bet for 1080P , 5" screen (which is also useless in phone, but everyone got it so Google will also). 2GB of ram (who needs more in a phone?)
No sdcard slot, no removable battery - standard in google phones.
the most major change will be the OS, KLP will most probably be pushed to phones after I/O.

4k refers to video its called ultra hd.wow . also....it seems(could of course be wrong) like you dissing or dissmising nexuses?! First are you forgeting price??!! Way below norm.people are and will eventually flock once out of a contract fir a 249$ phone. Second nexus strives now(not the gnex albeit a good phone) to be the top o line device. My lgog which is the n4 brother destroyed the Samsung Galaxy s3 in the way many ways including speed. The lgog is the top scorer stock on quadrant. Yes i know its not everyday use im just making a point. I have contacts at lg(a cousin who is a dev) and all these specs are being seriously considered.(blueprint will be at fed communication soon) and the almost for sure one is the snapdragon 800. So your guess is flawed. Sorry

Would you buy a phablet from htc? (A galaxy note-like device)

I admit, i'm an htc fanboy for many years. Heck, this website was born from an htc device. I am waiting on the note 3 as a secondary device (to mount in the car and use as a general tablet like device while keeping my one as my main handset due to size). If htc would make something like the note, 6- 6.5 inch screen etc., i'd be all over it. I'm starting this thread as sort of a petition for such a device. I'd also value any opinions but please keep it constructive. As soon as this becomes a "my samsung beats your htc beats your iphone beats your nexus" discussion, it will be closed by moderators and rightfully so. Try to keep it positive and see how many votes we can get FOR such a device. If you hate htc, buy a samsung and have a fabulous day!

I am a galaxy note user and thinking about my next device too. I would love to see a bigger HTC One, even though Note 3 will be overwhelming, I guess. The One is just amazing. And a newer HTC One multimedia giant with nice speakers 'sounds' even better ...
For me, it will depend mainly on design (hopefully no plastic-based Note 3) and if HTC can imitate nice features like multi window or air view (or/and build up other ones).

It needs to have:
- 32GB or above MicroSD!!! If not then never mind.
- Full HD (no more halfwitted 720/800 junk. Enough with the 2001 graphics.)
- Snapdragon 800
- Pen support. It's hard to beat the Wacom-supported Spen.
- 3GB or more RAM.
For me to consider it over the Note 3. The HTC One was never a serious contender for me, because 90% of the time I do not have an active WiFi connection, and I need the large extended storage space. (You try doing 6 hours a day by train without a large pack of decent film to watch.)

I admit it was tough for me to go with a32g device. I worked it out though as I'm still using the evo lte in the car for media nav hands freedialing texting etc. That's where the phablet's going whether htc or Samsung. As long as it has a card slot 16 gig is not a problem for me. 2 meg ram is more than enough on the one but more would still be fantastic. That's where the real performance improvements come in. I'll trade 4 extra cores for a gig of ram any day.

4. A possibly revamped s4 with a snapdragon 800
5. HTC ONE AND S4 Google edition.
Just wondering who is trading their nexus 4 for what phone and for what purposes?
Just curious

I ain't trading shizz!!! I just bought this phone 4 months ago, and I did so with the intention of using it until it's a dinosaur (EOL), or Google signs Sony to make a Nexus...whichever comes first
i wanna trade but idk i love this phone so much
Getting the next Nexus. Hopefully made by HTC or Sony.

Don't think the Nexus 4 has enough trade value to do a one for one trade for the phones you mentioned.

I know, I love it too....that's why the only thing that'll make me get a new one before N4's EOL is a Sony Nexus. I absolutely love their hardware! I'm actually kind of impressed that LG did as well with this one, too...I've never exactly been a fan of anything LG makes, but man do I love this phone

i know not a direct trade and no one would trade those phones for a nexus 4
but i meant trade as in sell/ trade w/cash , etc.

yea i was a bit iffy about LG making this at first, but im very impressed with it.
And yea sony nexus would be nice
and most phones now pretty much have all same hardware (as far as flagship devices) sony makes some sexy looking devices
only thing i wish is the nexus had a 5 inch display :/
I will never buy another phone that isn't in the Nexus line as long as Nexus is being made. I came from the iPhone 4 to the Nexus 4 with zero experience in any Nexus device, or even Android in general, and I can tell you that pure Android is the best Android. I have a bunch of friends who hate Android solely because they bought a low-end phone that was running an outdated version of Android and had low specs.
"Yeah, but you should buy those Google Edition phones! They're so good and still show off pure Android!"
Yes, but at the same time, no. It's what AOSP 'should' look like, but it isn't truly AOSP. The OEMs still have to input their proprietary drivers/kernels to make it compatible with that hardware, so it's still customized. Android is developed for the latest Nexus device, and Nexus is made to show off the latest Android. I will sincerely buy every Nexus device that will ever be made because it is so open (and cheap). The freedom granted to OEMs, or end-users, is ridiculous. One line of code to unlock the bootloader? For real? Why WOULDN'T you buy Nexus? Come on.

Historically, not all nexii are as cheap as the N4. Just ask galaxy nexus, nexus s, nexus one and google one owners who bought devices from play. They paid an arm for their devices!! I love google's new subsidized price strategy, but it's just that....new I hope they keep it up, though, because I whole-heartedly agree with you!! I'll buy every nexus released as long as they are affordable in their prices.

I don't own a N4, but I do hope they keep the same price range as I will be buying a nexus for my next device come January. Hopefully there will be a N5 at that time with the same price I will jump all over that.

Bought my wife the Galaxy S4 yesterday. I love my nexus too but dang that phone is RETARDED fast. I mean, I didn't really notice any lag in my phone until I played with hers but there is a hint here and there. Even with my animations and so forth turned to .5x
I could flash Cyanogenmod and be good to go. I mean I had the EOL idea too but now I'm rethinking it. And to think what goodies may come in the fall. The Galaxy S4 LTE-A with a 2.3ghz processor.... REALLY.? Omg.. I dunno we will see I guess. I do love my phone but it's hard to resist hardware like that.

For me at least I know I want the nexus cuz I don't want to pay for all the extra stuff that I won't use like waiving my hand around like a monkey to use my phone. Anyways if I were to get a s4 and use cm10.1 on it what's the point of spending twice the amount of a nexus for when I can have a better version of cm10.1

Staying with the N4 till the N5 arrives...
Another vote for keeping the N4 until the next Nexus.
Thanks may be an option too. I'm excited to see what the future of Google and Motorola may be also.. I think the point of putting Cyanogenmod on Galaxy S4 would be the better specs of the S4.

In my opinion the n4 is the best phone available especially since it will get official/unofficial updates for 3-5 years or so,

Well it seems that the S4 and the HTCone are not going to get their updates at the same time as us Nexus owners, Google says
On background, we will be working very closely with Samsung and HTC on future software updates for these devices and they will receive software updates shortly after a new version is released.

Moto X vs Nexus 4

I cracked the back on my N4 today, and with all the new about the Moto X does anyone think it's worth me waiting to grab one from the Play store when they release that version? Or should I just get another N4? I haven't found any comparison benchmarks.
I just posted my thoughts on this in the other thread so I might as well share it with you:

Is the front glass broke as well? If not I would just order the back cover and replace it. If you do make sure you order one with the NFC antenna if that is a must for you.

I had seem some references in my RSS feeds that it wouldn't be available in the Play store sometime soon. Ars suspects that it will be 2-300 from the Store as well.
If I had a good, non-broken, Nexus I wouldn't think about changing. I'm only looking because I need to purchase a phone anyway.

No but the crack goes down the housing along the bottom too. I was at a client and leaned over a wall forgetting it was in my shirt pocket. I'm lucky it didn't totally shatter when it fell.
I'm quite interested in how they rewrote the entire Linux base to run natively on the ARM instruction set. We may see unprecedented improvement in the delay in touch response that is seen on every Android device to date.
The voice recognition also seems like a massive push, even on the hardware side. I hope that can come to the Nexus 4, but I'm worried for battery life on that front. The X doesn't have the most powerful main SoC, but it looks like it will be a solid performer.
Not that I don't love the Nexus 4. I also love new contenders!

Well with the other cores in the computing system dedicated to voice commands and sensors won't that alleviate the s4 to perform more efficiently?

It should let the S4 sit at idle for longer periods of time.

Exactly my thoughts. Which is mainly why I thought that it would remain a solid performer. With all the other cores dedicated to performing other tasks, the S4 should be able to do main computing tasks quite fast. It remains to be seen how powerful that GPU is, however. But with all that optimization, though, it should provide an awesome experience!

I have to say that the Nexus 4 takes it just because of the price. The moto X is awesome but I would have hoped for it to be available sooner and more affordable but I totally understand the pricing. After all Motorola is still an OEM just like Samsung and LG and HTC, the difference is they are owned by google now ( no pun intended). Since they are still an OEM they must release phones just like any other OEM and that is via carriers unlike the nexus devices.
Honestly? I think Moto X is waaaaay cooler than Nexus 4...

Yes its cooler but is it 300$ more cooler than the N4? I don't think so... ( the off contract price is 575$ - 625$ depending of storage)

Yeah, I know... i'm not talking about price point here... And Moto said it would be sold in Play Store as a "Play Edition" device... so i'm expecting something like USD 499 or USD 599...

Yes a play store version will be available but I doubt it'll be customizable like the regular version, also t probably wont have the features the regular one has.
In theory it shouldn't have the same features if it becomes one of the "pure" devices, because it will be "pure android" so unless they push the features that it has like voice activation over to the 4.3 stream it shouldn't have them. That would be a big setback as far as I'm concerned it's a very nicely designed device and I like the customization, but there is a reason why we have N4s and not Samsung Galaxys.

They could just push an update to Google Search (Google Now) to support the new chip on the Moto X, responsible for the voice commands...
I'm disappointed at the price but in terms of raw power, the 2 krait 300 cores in x should be close to the performance of the n4. That means it also gets ddr3 ram etc. Im not a real big amoled fan but the partial off screen notifications... If its truly off unlike the galaxy nexus screen, it should be nice. Time will tell. When will someone actually review this thing?
The biggest thing I care about is performance to battery ratio. I underclock and try to optimize most of my devices. My nexus 4 runs Trinity kernel in dual core mode and only 1024 MHz most of the time because not much needs the whole enchilada of power with the bandwidth of these new phones and loads of ram. It seems like moto is trying to go the apple route with usability and long battery life etc. 6 hours on screen out of the box with very little drain should be the goal of all these phones when on mobile data.
They are probably shooting themselves in the foot though delaying the 32gb version outside of att. The whole hype of customization and all those links to lock it down on one carrier. Pretty foolish when you think of their exclusivity of good phones with Verizon in the past contributed to their decline.
Mildly disappointed but still holding out hope till the first real reviews come out.

There's already a Moto X thread which is borderline off topic. The mark manning Nexus 4 vs Any other phone thread is probably where this discussion should take place.
