This has been answered many times in other threads. Please search before posting.
No, 5.1 cannot be rooted directly. Root is only possible on 5.1 by flashing a pre-rooted ZIP.
Hi
If you have UB, youcan easily do that

Flashtool doesn't need root privileges.
With flashtool you flash ftf files.
You need flashtool program to flash ftf.
Your phone has to been in flash mode to flash a ftf file. The phone comes with flash mode, that's nothing special. The phone can handle flash mode from build.

Just curious, if you are on stock unrooted 5.1.1, how does Unlocking the Bootloader make rooting easier?

Just flash custom recovery and then flash super user through recovery, that's it

Overheat ? how ? there is no way... i have never even gotten over 50 Celcius... are you sure you don't have Z3+ ? D
Like what @xasbo said, this has been answered again and again, pls. use the search button.
There are no existing direct rooting method for 5.1.1 at the present time. Use flashtool to flash 4.4.4 or 5.0.2 on you phone then root it then install a custom recovery then flash a pre-rooted 5.1.1 on your phone. That is the only way you have at present if your phone has a locked boot loader.
If your phone has an unlocked bootloader, I believe you fastboot a rooted system.img or something to get root access on your 5.1.1 without the need to downgrade to either 4.4.4 or 5.0.2

Ah, yes my apologies I mixed system.img vs. system.sin, if you are making a pre-rooted 5.1.1 use this thread it details how to create a pre-rooted 5.0.2 but it is the same for 5.1.1

Strange, ive been using stock roms since 4.4.2 on my C6903 and never even felt my device being warm, like on samsungs opening chrome alone makes it so hot you cant touch it. but on Z1 noo, there must be something wrong on it.

I know the guys from XDA hate ETA questions but I just have to ask wether someone is working on rooting the .257 firmware with apps like vRoot or Kingo ROOT because I tried various methods that I found on XDA today to root it and I almost ruined the software and had to do a factory reset.

Did u update the firmware from an OTA update or you flashed the .275 directly? From what I read updating from an OTA keep the root you only need to install the supersu apk.

Yes OTA update (if available) will preserve root.
And I can't see how can you "ruin" your phone?!
You could wipe data but it's almost impossible to brick this device if you're using right firmwares

I rooted it successfully today using your method but when I tried yesterday after downgrading my firmware I couldn't use my camera and my Home was completely black so I had to open apps through Google Search. Then I had to do a factory reset.

I just tried to root 257 with Kingo and did not succeed. Restarted four times in all, without any apparent damage to the phone. I hope Kingo will fix this soon and we will be able to root z1 running 257 stock. It's such a hassle free application! Good luck to them..

The camera hardware was working fine when you downgraded, it's just the SQLite database version was raised, and the old version of the camera app is incompatible with that. Wiping all camera apps' data would fix it.
(Source: I went back and forth between 257 and 534 a lot)

OK, that is irrelevant to rooting then.
You can do the downgrade method and upgrade via OTA without losing any data then.

For downgrading firmware version? That's not really a good choice, flashing with a tft file is clearly better, flashing a custom kernel can hard brick your phone, avoid your warranty and can't be restored with SUS and PCC...

No, he asked how to root. If he has already unlocked the bootloader then the simplest way to root is flash a custom kernel. Warranty is already broken and what is the point in unlocking the bootloader unless you are going to flash a custom kernel anyway

Yeah but flashing a custom kernel is not necessary for having root on the latest firmware.

No its not, but its the easiest way to get root if you have already unlocked.
And please tell me the point of unlocking if you are not going to flash a custom kernel.
Its harmless as long as you flash the correct kernel. It carries the same risk as flashing anything.

You have downgraded in order to root then to do an OTA upgrade back to .257 if I am right.
In which case, do not worry that the camera does not work in .534, just root it, and upgrade OTA.
Then try the camera.
EDIT
Also you need to clear the data in all camera related apps

Okay .. So I'm running ver. 14.3.A.0.681 on my Z1 and I want to root it .. I heard of a method in which the phone must be downgraded, then rooted, then reupdated again using flashtool .. But every time I try to downgrade I get stuck in a boot loop .. I have managed to fix the boot loop problem by reflashing the 14.3.A.0.681.ftf
Please guys how can I downgrade without having this problem? And does this rooting method work? If not, what should I do?

Hi ralph97,
Here is what I did (although I was on .257 to start with)
1) Flashed C6903 14.1.G.1.534 Generic from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2469191
2) Install dualrecovery from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261606
3) Flash SuperSU (via recovery) from here - http://download.chainfire.eu/282/SuperSU/
4) Update to NUTs .681 from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2687443
Each time I flashed an ftf, I cleared everything, so I made a backup (I just copied the stuff such as music, photos etc to my pc)
I hope that this helps.
PS - all cradits to helping me to @gregbradley

If you open the BL there is no need to make all the way back to 534.
You just have to open the BL install a recovery, on the 680 ftf, and then install the supersu.

Yes this is true, but you may want to backup your TA partition before unlocking the bootloader and this needs root, so you have to downgrade to .534 anyway.
So, yes technically you can do this, but I DO NOT advise it.
Well, the first time you do it, probably it shoud be done as you say.
i also do that...its work..dont need to downgrade..

I hoped you backed up your TA....
You need root to do it, so it has to be done BEFORE you unlock.

Please remind to People the consequences in doing this! Like the Warranty, after Unlock Bootloader, will be Voided and even before that, like @gregbradley already said, Backup TA to not lose DRM Keys. The short way isn't the best all the time.
You do not reupdate by flashtool.
Only with the recovery.
Damn my thread got locked.

OTA will always fail when you're rooted, as signature checks will fail. You need to flash a pre-rooted 157 after wiping system and caches (not data).
