On boot my Tab S2 wifi shows the Samsung logo, then flashes the back and task manager capacitive backlight, but then once booted the screen touch does not fire up the capacitive backlight as normal for say 1.5 seconds. I'm convinced they used to, and the leds are clearly working, but fail to operate as they should. In display settings there is no control option. Device is unmodified, stock. Any ideas?
For me, they light up when touched and when the power button is pressed. But not when the screen is touched; I don't think they have ever done that.
On my rooted T810 with deodexed ROM, there is a TOUCH KEY LIGHT DURATION option under DISPLAY under SETTINGS that can set be set to off.
That option is not available on your S2?
I have a brand new S2, and capacitive buttons do light up when I touch the screen. However, when on-screen keyboard is active, the lights stay off regardless of where I touch the screen.
Do you use power saving (not ultra power saving) mode? If so, they don't light up when you do.
Option does not exist
So, my options for Display does not have a control for controlling the display timeout, it is just missing. A complete reset of Tab to factory settings has resolved them not coming on when they are pressed. So now they work for say 1.5 seconds.
Stock WiFi 810, with no software installed that would impact these. So why do I not have the option in the settings/display menu? Weird.

The capacitive buttons are switched off if the power saving mode is ON. Samsung did not give the option to turn these buttons ON in the power saving mode. The touchwiz ROM seriously damages the Android experience. I don't know why Samsung could not keep the AOSP settings layout but instead bastardize it. Big time!!!
Samsung teams who work ON touchwiz ROM... guys please wake up.

get GalaxyButtonLights from play
it allows you to set the duration/on/off
works perfectly on my Tab S2 815 !!
You know what's even better than messing with the buttons?
Root your tablet.
Install GMD Gesture Control and set gestures for Back and Recents. (Much more comfortable than having to hit some small spot below the screen every time.)
Then disable Recents and Back buttons by making the following changes to the file
/system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl :
Prefix the following lines with a "#" (making them a comment instead of a command):
key 158 BACK
key 254 APP_SWITCH
Then restart device.
Another reason this is better: When you hold the device in landscape mode, you won't accidentally hit the Back or Recents buttons anymore.

Thanks good solution.
My sm-t819 capacitive keys don't light up when I touch the screen, but wife's sm-t813 does.
Normal figured it out. That's how my region version is.

hi, i was wondering if its possible to turn the screen on(after locking, to unlock) by pressing the volume buttons instead of just the power button? Its really annoying having the power button the only means of turning the screen on, my old renoir worked with my volume buttons(and anything else) same as my dads arena .
Also does anyone know how to change the auto backlight settings? The intervals are terrible, it doesnt drop high or low enough to save battery but the steps are so close you notice the backlight drop just by tilting it away from any light source lol (very sensitive and annoying without really helping battery life!).
Tried searching so I apologize if its already been mentioned but i havent found any mention or solution .
i saw an option of setting the volume button to turn/wake the phone up. i believe it's from the CM7 build..
Yep, turning phone on with volume buttons is definately available on CM7. But I don't think there's that option with any of the MRC roms.
I'm sure that tiny power button will wear out sooner rather than later...it would be good to have another way of waking up the screen.
Yes option is available in CM7, but not still got a few bugs
Hi there!
Please, could anyone help me? I'm using AOKP Milestone 6 and changed original kernel, as the original one is causing problems, but no matters which kernel I use, my capacitive buttons lights keep turning on, even when disabled using options and even when those buttons itself are disabled through CWM.
I use navigation bar just like Galaxy Nexus and everytime I touch those buttons or I turn the screen on, their lights turn on also!
What I must do here? Which file I need to edit?
Thanks so much in advance!
On the Ics rom...its done like
Settings-display-touch keylight duration-always off... Nit sure bout other roms..
Mount /system read write.
Edit the file /system/usr/keylayout/sec_touchkey.kl adding the character # at the start of each line.
Mount /system read only.
Reboot.
Will try this right now and report back!
Oh God, it already has "#" before each line. I removed and inserted again, rebooted, and it's still turning on.
Probably it's ridiculous what I'm saying now, but I will return and stay at 40.1 due to this thing. Definitely Milestone 6 without it's native kernel can't handle this disabling capacitive lights things. =/
I just hate these buttons. Hope Galaxy Note 2 came with software buttons! I'm praying for that, but I know it's almost impossible...

Try this
1. Go into Settings -> Display -> Custom Backlight Settings -> Edit other levels... -> And set every "button" field to 0 and save.
2. Turn your brightness settings to "Auto" either via your statusbar widgets/toggles or via the standard Settings -> Display settings.
3. Go back to Home, turn your screen off, wait a second and turn it back on. Notice that the button lights stay off!
If you like to keep keep your screen brightness at Auto, then you're done!
4. Now turn your brightness back to a manual setting. Notice that your buttons light back up. That's okay.
5. Turn your screen off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
6. Now they should be off and will remain off until either you reboot or you toggle the Auto field again (which toggling it simply brings you back to step 5 to fix again).
All credits goes to Jaxidian
Thanks so much for the tips. As I'm back to 40.1, I will try to check this before testing AOKP JB!
By the way, you are using it, right? It worth? Can be used in a daily basis?
Acc
If your phone's power button is in a 'pressed' state, like mine, (turns on automatically when battery is inserted), it is a hardware issue.
Here is a hassle free alternative to turn on the phone when it is in sleep mode, without relying on the power key!! Takes a minute or two only!!
1. Get 'Go launcher' from the app market (play)
2. Get 'Go Locker'
3. Now Enable Go Locker on your device. And you are done!!
When the screen goes black again, Just press the volume button, The screen wakes up!!
Using this method you don't lose the normal functionality of the volume rocker!!
I recalled that I used to have Go Locker on my phone, and that when I pressed the Volume key the screen turned on!!
At that time I found it a little annoying, But now it has turned out to be such a gift!!
* For this method to work, your phone has to be rooted.
The power button is not going to work until the hardware is repaired, I prefer to use this method, because it is a safe and quick method!!
Believe me I looked around the internet and this forum for a fix, The usual method: editing the system files on the phone, and after which the volume button cannot be used to control the volume.
For those looking for a quick fix, just follow my method!
Cheers!
There are also several roms out there that have the volume rocker wake built into the rom without making it completely useless for it intended purpose. As well as several that offer a go to sleep toggle in the notification window so you can lock your phone again.
so this is a hardware issue ? i had been using the go locker i been using but the power button is annoying cus it keep showing the power button options . and killing my battery.
only fix is samsung?
Pretty much every version of cm for cappy has volume rocker wake as an option, because of this common problem. I use app called turn off screen as well.

I had the exact same problem with my Epic Touch 4G. Thought it was the ROM, the overclock, etc. I flashed back to (almost) stock, went back to original clock speeds. I couldn't figure out what it the world was causing the issue, until it got worse. Then, I noticed that even brushing past the power button would wake the screen, and about 10 seconds later the phone would reboot.
Long story short, I bought a replacement power switch, soldered it in place, and have had zero problems since!
Several eBay sellers offer the proper replacement switch you'll need.
(They don't include the required skills to properly desolder/solder it, however. It's a tiny switch - about 4mm x 2mm x 1.5mm, and you'll need a good quality fine-tipped soldering iron.)
Im looking for a xposed module that would let me have a fake shutdown but that would leave the phone running without turning on the screen even when pressing buttons.
I tried the advanced power menu+ and it does have a fake shutdown, but after the 10s of (fake)shutting down message, if i press the home button on my s5, the screen still lights up and shows the pattern to unlock.
What i wanted is one that after showing that message and shuts down the screen, it doesn't light up again when pressing the home or side buttons and the only way to restart it is to remove the battery /pressing the power button for a few seconds or something along those lines, that way in case the phone is stolen the thief will think its off and i will still be able to track it for a while longer. Is there a module for that?
Thanks!

Hi. I'm the developer of Advanced Power Menu+. Actually my module has this feature. Just go to the details page of the fake power off option, tick the "Put device into screen-off death" checkbox and reboot. Then whenever someone presses the fake power off option, the screen cannot be turned on again even you press the buttons.
Let me know if this feature works on your S5 (I haven't tested on any S5). You can continue the discussion at the dedicated thread for the module, http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/advanced-power-menu-apm-t2842792.

Will do and use the other thread. Thanks!
I had actually noticed that option but it showed the disclaimer and since i wasnt sure what it was, i pressed 'cancel'. So i will try it.
Btw, your module is very neat and i really like the ui, so if this works on the s5, perfect
Edit: it works on the s5. I posted about it on the module thread
im using Ultimate Dynamic Navbar because when i replaced the screen on my note 4 i accidentally got too close to the buttons and cut the recent and back buttons. so they no longer work. i completely removed the buttons since i cut them. everything else works fine but for some reason when im charging the phone something is causing the back or recents button to be pressed. this only happens when im charging the phone and have the screen on. how can i disable the buttons? i already tried to do the Generic.kl commenting out (putting a # infront of each line) but that did not help (unless im not entering the the # on the correct line) and it didnt help. i still get the recent apps while charging the phone and the screen is on. anyone know of a way to disable it with another method?

Well I know that an xposed module called Xposed Additions can do it. Hopefully that will work in your case.

i tried gravity box for Lollipop on the PACMAN rom which kinda helps. the thing is that the buttons seem to have swapped so im guessing its because of the rom. before it kept pressing the recents button now its pressing the back button. i also was able to see what was going on action wise as in long presses or double taps with gravity box. it seems that long presses is the most frequent cause of this issue but i also get a few double taps and single taps randomly. i tried to select no action for these events on the back button with half luck. gravity box does not have a do nothing action so the only thing i could do was do a custom action without selecting an app. but when it gets triggered i get a toast saying no such app, due to no app selected in gravity box. this is something ill bring up to the devs of gravity box. ill check out your suggestions and will reply back with the results, THANKS FOR THE REPLY!

Yeah. Seems Xposed Additions will work then. It has actions for both Click and Long Press for all the hardware buttons with the Screen On/Off. It's basically a mod to do just that...remap the buttons or disable.
I use it to disable the Home button while the screen is off. Also to use the volume buttons for skipping songs while screen is off.

the only issue with it was that it would not save the settings when i restarted. but i did use it to see what key value back was and put a # in it and restarted. seems to have worked so far. i wonder why the additions wont stick after a reboot. hopefully if this works ill be able to choose which on screen buttons to select from the pacmans/gravity box or ultimate dynamics. each has its pros and cons.
