Ok guys I am sure this info is in here if I just look, but I know how to use nandroid and other stuff that is necessary for roms, also know how to load them and such.
My quick and dirty questions are as follows.
1. If I root and break something can I always go back with a factory and data reset?
2. Is honeycomb even worth it or should I stick with CM7 for now?
3. Going on a trip tomorrow and would love to load some movies, what is the best format and player to use?
4. What is the best rooting method right now?
5. Also I like the nook magazine thing and books on it as well is it possible to run both OS's or start the nook app from CM7 or something like that?
That's about it.
1) Yes, its virtually impossible to brick the device, you might get stuck on a bootloop of something but that is alwas reversible to stock.
2)Cm7 for now. honeycomb has a LOT of problems. go with the Cm7/Tablet tweaks version
3) if you do a search for nook color handbreak presets, you will find it
4) to root go with auto-nooter.
Remember, Rooting and installing roms are completely different
5. You can install an OS to an sdcard and keep the internal memory stock. Then when you want to switch, just pop out the sdcard and reboot. If you want CM7, take a look at the CM7 size agnostic sdcard image- it takes care of fixing up the standard CM7 builds so that they can be installed on an sdcard.
I hope mods will find this thread informative and not remove it as I think I have few things to share that people can really use and be aware of when getting their Nook Color rooted and stup with CM7 ROMs.
Reason I am writing my experience is that I feel there was some info that could have been more informative and straight forward (other than confusing minor parts that wasted some of my time )...
I started without much of the knowledge about how to root Nook, etc and read several stickies on "how to" stuff... After all I managed to get following flashed onto my nook color:
CM7 (7.0.2 stable ROM version)
Gapps
Dalingrin's OC kernel (4/24/11)
Clockworkmod (updated it through the ROM Manager at the later time).
Here is several advices I think you should know about;
1. Do go and check "How to videos" on Youtube in regards to installing CM7 on your Nook Color!
2. If you are going for CM7 ROM, there is no need to root your Nook with "manual nooter" ... you can use MN only if you want to keep all options but gain Market app and other apps as well... I recommend going CM7 since it is rooted already and everything gets taken care of in three simple steps:
a) Burn bootable SD Card with Win32DiskImager and use 1GB Clockworkmod Image you can find here at xda forums.
b) Once done, copy ROM and Gapps and Kernel .zip archives onto the root of yor SD Card (do not rename any files at any time)
c) Insert SD Card into Nook and boot it, it will go into Clockwork mode and do the following:
***FIRST go to "Mount/Storage" and format SYSTEM, then format DATA and then format CACHE
***Select Install from SD Card and then install files in this order:
-1- CM7 ROM
-2- Gapps pack
-3- OC Kernel
3. Once done with everything shut down Nook, take out SD Card and place it back into SD Card reader (do not use any phones to do this - SD Card readers are preferable... if you ask me, yes I did use my phone and it worked just fine).
4. Find Panasonic SD Formatter v2 (or v3) online, install it and then format the SD Card to wipe all of the stuff on it... I formatted the old fashioned way and it worked just fine... either or you go for it's up to you.
5. Place back formatted SD Card into the Nook and boot it.
Note: CM7 uses SD Card for a storage and that's why format was necessary
IMPORTANT 1: CM7 comes pre-loaded with ADWLauncher (regular non-EX version) and I have to say it was bit choppy (even with OCing CPU to 1.2GHz)... I went and installed LauncherPro to test it and have to say MUCH SMOOTHER... yes, iPad smooth if you are asking me when it comes to sliding home screens (video is pending update, you will see it for yourself).
IMPORTANT 2: Lots of people is talking about battery life, renaming Phone apk and Telephony service apk ... IT IS SIMPE: when you are using WiFi have Airplane mode OFF; when you are done with WiFi, simply turn Airplane Mode ON and that will (as made to do) disable phone services. Just one button more to press BUT it saves you whole lots of battery. I charged it about 2hrs ago and since then used tablet for about 10 minutes on Wifi and that was it. Phone idle is 5%!!! until I figured to try with airplane mode... and it works...
UPDATE - Important Note: I forgot to mention that kernel does allow OCing but currently I am testing it under regular clock (800MHz and 300MHz) - launcher scroll home screens works just as smooth and I turned off fade-in/out when clicking on App Drawer just because I am not big on eye-candy.
Try it for yourself and report back - I would be glad to hear this worked for others and not only me
Great post. I personally found Zeam Launcher to be the snappiest luancher for my device but YMMV. To add to the original post I made a thread concerning the volume settings for the Nook that can be found HERE. I have mine overclocked to 1.3Ghz and I can get a full day of heavy use out of it as long as I turn off WIFI when it is not needed. Just add a shortcut to your notification bar under the Cyanogen Tablet Settings option. Also add a brightness shortcut to it and keep it as low as possible. Make sure to turn off auto-brightness in the display menu that's found under Settings.
If you posted this a few months back, it would be great.

Grab a recent nightly (I can vouch for 176, but have seen some trouble reports on 177, haven't looked into the just released 197) and up-to-date gapps (bottom of this page). Dal's overclock kernel is built-in, along with other features designed to work with the Nook Tweaks app.
The problem with battery life in older versions of CM7 is that the device will not deep sleep. That was solved with the move to 7.1.

If you install lately nightly build, would you recommend others to install OC kernels version 04/21/2011?
I just pointed out for new comers that if they have their NC, mostly likely version 1.2, this instructions are outdated and they should NOT go out and hunting for old stuff. That's all.
Don't know it this is a setting somewhere or what, but I have a question on using the Kindle app on the Nook Color running cmod 7 (7.20 stable). The app runs okay, but I seem to be missing a navigation bar once I start reading a book. It only shows the title and where I am - no options to go back to the Kindle menu (like if I want to read a different book). The only way I can get back to the Kindle menu is to reboot.
I've searched the forum and the closest thread to this problem talks about changing the settings - I don't seem to have any settings to adjust. Even if I go to settings/applications/manage applications/downloaded/kindle there still aren't any changable options.
Sorry for so many questions - I'm a noob. I've searched the net on this and searched this forum with no luck.

On my device I only have to tap the middle of the page and the menus all pop up.

What version of the Kindle app are you using? Try updating to the latest version.
Also try playing with the settings in cm. Go to settings, cyanogenmod settings, tablet tweaks, and play with checking and unchecking disable full screen.

Thanks for the reply! I downloaded the Kindle app via Amazon, so hopefully it is whatever is their latest. I sure didn't know about the settings, so I'll give the go and see what happens! I do get the drop down from the top stating the title, and the pull-up from the bottom, but the bottom only has how much I've read so far.

EDIT: Well, I don't have the tablet options. Everything in there is for a phone! Seems kind of weird on a device that doesn't have a phone.
lost cm settings
I tried the cyanogenmod settings, and while everything there was for a phone, I turned off things like vibrate, etc. - pretty much everything dealing with a phone. Now when I try to go back to cyanogenmod settings, the app aborts.
I also look in the dev settings and see a config file in there that set s default resolutions, etc., and includes an option that looks like it hides the menu bar, so I used terminal (I am familiar with Linux) and checked for such a file for the system but wasn't able to locate one. I'm wondering if there's a setting like that somewhere, as I don't get any back arrows, menu, etc., just on the pages, and was wondering if that was also stopping me from getting the full menu bar in the Kindle app?
So you do NOT see the word Kindle in orange Aa, magnifying glass and three vertical dots and a bookmark icon as well as the blue dot and position in book at the bottom of screen when you touch anywhere that is NOT the far left and far right of the screen?
And you do NOT see the back, home, recent apps and "menu" button in the bar at the bottom of the screen outside of the kindle window?
Dev settings? no such beast in CM7 or CM9
There is a Developer options which has nothing to do with any sort of resolutions..
I suggest you reinstall CM7.2 release from the official site, stay out of ADB, and stay away from all the various "work in progress" roms until you can actually navigate the default device...
I think you probably got a bit happy and broke something .. there is a setting in CM7 settings to disable fullscreen apps from hiding the "menubar" at the far bottom of the screen and that should be under tablet tweaks in the system settings app.

Yep - none of those. This was just after getting 7.0 stable installed and loading in the gapps, since the gapps file was dated just slightly after that release. Immediately went and got Kindle and Nook reader apps. Tried them to be sure they looked like they were working and then applied the zip of 7.2 stable. I didn't try the cyanogenmod settings until later when it was posted in this thread. Again, there are no options in there for a tablet - only a phone. I don't mind going back and doing everything over, just as long as I don't end up in that deadly embrace of things aborting and google market not working. I'll let you know what happens.
If I flush out the Kindle cache I can get back to seeing my titles, but that really defeats the purpose of reading on the device.
Something is not right
Okay, I downloaded everything again and made the microSD. I booted the microSD, did the format data/system reset, went to mounts and did the format /system, while there I tried the format /data - it fails. I had noticed before that when the data/system reset is run and completes, I can no longer do anything - I have to manually power off, wait a while, and power back on. Did all that, went to advance and cleared the kelvich or whatever it's call cash. Installed the cmod7.20 stable. Took out the microSD and rebooted. All of my old apps, etc., are still there. I also was looking at settings and see that the settings I changed were under "phone", not using the cyanomod settings app - it still just aborts.
So, what have I got to do to completely clean all this stuff off and then try installing again? As you can imagine, the number of attempts, partial successes, successes (at least I thought it was only the Kindle app that wasn't showing the menu), etc., we're talking all kinds of hours starting Monday night - probably at least 10 hours each day. Now I'm no further than when I started. For now I'm going to load the old 1.4.1 image again for the umpteenth time and hope someone can tell me how to clear this all up, or else recommend a different android that will run on the Nook Color without problems.
I still think if I can clear EVERYTHING (well, not /boot, obviously) so I'm starting with a CLEAN slate again it may help. I just don't have a clue how to do that using cwm recovery.

Can't get beyond where it asks for B&N userid/password as the keyboard shows for about 1/2 a second, no matter what I do. How do I get rid of all this stuff so I can try an install from a clean slate? Right now I've been going thru all the data folders I can find and manually removing everything there. I would like to delete a lot of apps, but I never seem to be able to "uninstall".
So, before I start over again, can someone tell me how to clear EVERYTHING (except /boot, /emmc [unless I need to],/sd*) so I have a clean system first?

Boot to CWM and do a factory reset. If you don't have CWM on emmc, make a bootable CWM SD. You can get one on my tips thread linked in my signature. A factory reset clears /data, /cache and clears any apps you may have installed to SD. It does not touch boot, system or emmc media.

That's what I've been doing - format data/factory reset option from cwm. Before rebuilding the entire microSD on my Windows PC I have also done a complete format of the media. I then boot CWM from the microSD and install the cmod7 7.20 stable zip - I always assumed this was going straight to the device since when I remove the microSD and boot cmod7 is there. However, none of the pre-existing apps are gone - everything is still there.
I've tried using CWM, advanced options, and format /data - it always fails. So I'm wondering if perhaps the format of /data the is part of the factory reset also fails but the script doesn't error out. Right now I'm going through an extremely time consuming task of manually removing the files and folders in /data via the terminal and su so I get the permissions. If there is another quicker way to clear /data I'd sure appreciate knowing. I've tried some of the treed removes from my Linux experience but they don't seem to work.

EDIT: forgot to mention - I'm trying your partition restores from the link in your signature - only the "safe" ones - I don't to do that partition 2 stuff and really mess up. Perhaps this will clean everything off.

I followed the link and did the repartitioning and formating with the first 2 scripts (left partition 2 alone!). Installed 7.20 stable - I now have the bar at the bottom of my screens. I'm waiting to format a 16gb microSD then I'm going to try the Kindle app out again, but I'd say this looks REALLY promising! Your scripts did what I wanted to do - they cleared everything out!

Now "all" I have to do is just try to learn this! Maybe some place down the road I might try some programming, but I don't know how different it will be from my C using GTK++ on Linux. But first, to learn!

I know you got it all working and I am glad, but just for future reference, the problem you were having probably stemmed from using an old version of CWM. You have to use version 3.2.0.1 or newer or the format of data will fail on the newer nooks. The one in my tips thread is the newest version.

I did look at the the tar file I downloaded when I was trying to install from a 4gb microSD - it does say only 3.0.2.8, so I'm sure the 16gb I ended up installing from was probably the same, so I'll go grab what you recommended!
Since I don't want to have the problem again, I'm DEFINITELY going to follow your advise!
I had another suspicion for what may have happened, and why I had so much problem from the get-go with cmod 7 - I tried someone else's "put android on your nook" thing, which I know tried to root the nook and then dump some stuff in, and that didn't end up working.
I'm just glad your posts have gotten me going correctly!! BTW - the Kindle app works fine now, too!

- The new CWM you recommend is the 5.x.x.x that's on the link, correct?
- Are there any newer releases of Android for the Nook Color? Right now I don't know anything about Android (complete noob [LOVE the movie on the registration page!] ). I know someone who is quite versed in all of this he mentioned that I'm running some name (honeycomb or something like that) and that there are newer ones out there (maybe that was honeycomb). At any rate, are there some updates I could run to make this any "better"? I know the version I'm running also seems to think it's a phone - is there one where it actually thinks it's a tablet?

Yes that CWM is attached to my tips thread linked in my signature.
You can try CM9 which is tablet based, but it is still in alpha and not as stable as CM7. Don't use honeycomb, it is old and very buggy.

Thanks again for the info! I'll get that copy of cwm right away. Since CM9 is still early, I'll wait on any updates. I really don't know anything yet, but I am having fun with the Nook Color being all Android now. It's nice having the Kindle app and the Nook app - this way have all my books on 1 device, and that works great!

Hey guys I have several questions today and hope that I can get them answered.
Are pre certified HD+ used tablets or do barnes and nobles actually open new and put them as pre owned?
Serious question: Comparing Stock UI vs CM emmu, which is faster and less laggy? and I think CM includes root after it is installed right? does it also include unknown apk sources? If I install a launcher like Nova, does stock launcher still run in the background? would it matter? because I am deciding whether to convert to CM or not and if I did, I would go with emmu. Most importantly, I have a 2GB MicroSd, would that be enough for CM? if not would it be enough just to root my tablet and install unknown apk zip? Is CM 10.2 stable now or do I have to use CM 10.1 RC? Thank you guys:good:
Some thoughts
A couple of thoughts. You'll want at least a 4G card to do the CM install (the boot image is 4G). If you want to do a backup of your stock install (recommended), you'll want a larger card or a second one to grab the backup (my initial backup was 1.34G).
On stock vs CM, I chose CM installed internally because (a) I didn't really care about stock, (b) at the time, CM appeared to be a more stable solution overall than rooted stock + an alternate launcher + the ability to install from unknown sources (the stock OS would reset if an app modified /system). FWIW, that problem now appears to be solved (see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613). While I haven't compared stock vs CM10.1 side by side on the HD+, I've been running rooted stock with an alternate launcher on my Nook Tablet for over a year and that has been a very good experience. But CM 10.1 on the HD+ is quite stable and smooth, and I haven't seen any real issues with lag.
So to a certain extent, it is a matter of choice. Rooted stock will keep you better connected to the Nook world (e.g., you can download and install the free Friday app each week, if you'd like to), while CM will give you more of a full Android tablet experience.
Actually, the 4GB boot image is old. I think it is leapinlar that posted a way to just stick the files on the sdcard at just a few MB literally. Its entirely possible to backup stock to a 2GB. Running cm on it though, well I don't remember. You'll have to search for it though as its not as straightforward as it sounds.

Thank you guys so much for your responses, they are really helpful for deciding which rom to use. The problem is I only have a 2gb micro in my phone now and I was think about backing up Stock(around 1.5 gb ish) i think? Then dump it and do an internal install into the HD+. I don't know if that is possible and if so can I have the link to img/tutorial? SInce I want the most stable and safest experience possible should I stick with CM 10.1 RC or are the 10.2 nightlies REALLY stable now? Does flashing to CM automatically include root and enable Unknown apk from setting menu or do I have to use leapinlar's zip again?

ok i will try flashing that, Do i have to flash the kernel from verygreen or is the kernel already flashed when i install CM 10.1RC2? and does the high screen resolution stay the same after I flashed to CM compared to stock? Is stock launcher on CM faster than nova launcher?
If you install CM 10.1 RC2, you will be all set . . . nothing else needed. Resolution remains the same. Launcher is Trebuchet, but I've never used Nova, so can't offer a comparison
My Samsung Galaxy ACE S5830 needs the kiss of life, so as to return to the 21st century.
It has slow responses and quite often freezes and messes up with my nerves.
It currently runs on a 2.3.5 android version.
I want to root it, take a backup, increase ram by creating a partition in my new sd card and install a light custom rom (like MIUI). For this purpose, I just bought a very fast Kingston 32GB, class 10 U3, sd card with theoretical 90MBs read and 80MBs write speed. I think that will suffice.
I am a simple user and I need basic functions. My main issue is to get a faster response from the phone. I don’t play games and I am not a major fun of social media. I just want to want to use it mainly as a phone, for calls, messages, Viber, and some extra facilities like emailing, web browsing, watching some videos online (news and youtube), occasional photos, listen to music, and install a GPS program like Sygic.
I’ve already read a lot about the whole process, but as I’m doing it for the first time in my life I want to make sure that I got it right. And I have a few ambiguities.
Please advise or freely suggest if any better/easier method is available.
1. Rooting.
I decided to use Kingo Root. So, I need to download Kingo Root to my pc and connect the phone (having enabled USB debugging) and just press Root. Then check if rooting is successful with Root Checker. Then download and install SuperSU app. And I’m done.
Do I need to unlock my bootloader, too?
2. Backup.
a) Take an image of the existing ROM.
Download and install ROM Manager, flash ClockworkMod Recovery and update. Boot in to recovery by using ROM Manager or manually by pressing simultaneously UP+POWER+HOME buttons. Then go to Backup and Restore and take a backup image. Right?
b) Backup apps and messages.
I want to take just 2 backups here, my text messages and my Viber messages. Do I use Titanium or something else? My contacts are already synchronized with Google. If I use a MIUI stock rom do I need to take a backup of my contacts too?
3. Increase phone's RAM
I think now is the right time to increase the phone’s RAM. Do I need to partition it with CWM? Or I just use an app like Ram Expander? Do I do both? I mean firstly partition the sd to the desired size and then use Ram Expander? None of the above? What do you suggest? I have read some other possible solutions like using INT2EXT+ after partition. And when I download a new app how will the phone know where to store it, in phone’s RAM or in sd card?
The key factor is speed and efficiency.
I’ve also read that “Even though the Internal Storage would read 2GB (or whatever is your partition size), the apps would still use some amount of REAL INTERNAL Storage for data, hence you need at least 100MB REAL Internal Memory for every 500MB SD-EXT memory.” Is this true? And if so, since I believe the Galaxy ACE S5830 has about 150 MB RAM the most I can actually get is 750 MB RAM?
It is important to get as much RAM as possible because I’ve read that Sygic (the GPS Navigator app) needs to be installed in phone’s RAM to work properly and it is about 700MB.
4. Install Stock ROM
Finally, the time has come to install a new stock rom. I am thinking about MIUI 6. I like its interface and I’ve heard it is light and fast. Any better suggestions? Can I do it in my phone?
My problem here is this, is MIUI a fully functional stock rom, which means I just download it and flash it or is it a “port rom” which means I have to previously install some android 4.4.x base rom? I have read in some article that is needs a compatible android rom to lean on before installing. Is that so?
Here I am stuck, I can’t decide how to proceed and I need your help.

Hi there, long time galaxy ace user and MIUI lover here.
1. For rooting my device, I just flashed a zip in recovery mode. Can't find the link to that thread.
2. Yes, backup is very important right after rooting, especially for beginners.
As for sms backup, I recommend using SMS backup and Restore, which can be downloaded from the market. I haven't used viber, so I don't know which app would be the best for backing it up, but you can try Titanium backup. For contacts, you can sync them as long as you flash a g-apps package and sign in with the same google account. To be sure, you can try exporting your contacts to your sd card and import it later on (.vcf)
3. I did not even increase my phone's ram via swap, Even with a tiny ram, Miui on top of Cm7 is pretty fast and can handle any basic task such as browsing, youtube videos, music, calling, camera, camcording and messaging with minimal stutters. (I don't play games btw)
4. If you are a simple phone user just like me, who only need some calls, sms and browsing functionality, the best bet would be to use MIUI builds based on gingerbread (CM7). I found that MIUIv4 builds (ICS and JB) are poorly optimized for our device. Also, there are currently no MIUI v5 or v6 builds for armv6 devices.
My personal recommendation is: MIUIXXX http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908444 which comes with FireKernel OC.
I use Gabreek's Miui v5 theme, which you can find it on his thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280553 In my opinion, his v5 theme is the best, because of LOTS of app icons and the overall feel.
Also, be sure to flash a g-apps package for gingerbread after flashing the rom.
MIUI v4 snapseries build is too unresponsive for me, and missing some features like screen off animation. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1879323
MIUI v4 JB by msnnsm is also good, but consumes lots of ram http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2054460.
TL;DR: flash an miui gb rom. It is the best in terms of stability and speed.

It's completely fine to flash miuiXXX right away (B)
gabreek's is another MIUI rom, but bluetooth is not working in his v6 build. The theme file (mtz) is somewhere in the bottom of the post, below some useful tips and just above the credits part of his post

as far as i know, themer does not work.
Also, MIUI comes with its own theme engine, and you can download online, which is very nice.
Remember that when Applying themes, do not include lockscreen (uncheck lockscreen) . Lockscreens from the Theme app are meant for HDPI device, and you won't be able to unlock your phone if you apply them. If you accidentally get stuck on the lockscreen, press volume up and back button at the same time. It will unlock your phone.

So far, so good, I have not experienced any major problems.
2 more things to ask if you dont mind.
a. Where do I get the gapps file to flash from? Is is a specific file for our rom (MIUIXXX) or any gapps file will do?
b. Can I add an extra language, in the android keyboard or do I have to use an app for this? Or even better in the system itself. I am from Greece and I would find it very convenient in some tasks of the phone. I mean since it is essentially a MIUI rom and MIUI has the greek language in its official roms, there must be a way that this can be done.

To Root Your Device See The XDA's post.
Take The Backup of Current Rom Using CWM recovery or ROM Manager would do this too.
Then inorder to Increase Memory On Your Device By Partitining the SD Card.

Take a notepad and make a change log with steps you made, so you can return to the previous step if something is not working ok.
