Upgraded to 6.0 with stock base and semi-stock kernel with root to avoid the triangle. Bluetooth will not play, it does connect, but no sound. For Wi-Fi hotspot, I'm on Straight Talk, and it is asking me to contact AT&T to authorize service.
Does anyone know if this is this a kernel or/and 6.0 base issue?

Google sees your Straight Talk as AT&T so without modifying settings.db with "tether_dun_required" =0 tethering will not work.

That's what I've been told needs to be done but I haven't had any luck with it
does changing the kernel require root, or just unlocked bootloader? I tried rooting so I could update the build.prop file, but it soft bricked my phone after i rebooted phone and i needed to reflash stock (used no wipe option). So phone is working but no hotspot and no root (scared to try again after the last time!)

Do i need to be rooted to try a different kernel? I am willing to try the one you are using if it gives me back tethering. I dont use it much, and its my data to use, i dont want my carrier preventing me from using it! I have Cricket, i tried calling them to find out if the feature can be added and they said since its a bring your own device that it can't. it worked before i got the 6.0 update! WHY YOU DO THIS GOOGLE!

Confirmed! Unlike the modified cup/donut application offered here this one is the bog standard eclair IM apk, so this will NOT work over 3G, only SMS and/or Wifi.
The only reason it wants to get the phone number from the SIM is to lock it to t-mobile phones. The IM data goes via wifi or 3G/Edge data either way. (Edit: gah, but there's the stupid TMO billing side-channel; I can't believe that they actually send real sms for IM, even though they bill it as one.)
Hi all. I have obtained a modded version of the Mobile Hotspot provisioning for Verizon. This should let you use hotspot without paying VZW for the feature that is free to any non-VZW rom users..
TO CLEAR UP ANY CONFUSION: I am NOT the original developer of this mod. I was directly contacted by the modder who wished to remain anonymous due to the potentially grey legal area of a mod such as this.
Suffice to say that I am not stealing credit, and that I am posting it specifically to act as a shield to the original dev, as per their request. If I need to give a name to avoid flak, then I'll just remove the post rather than break my promise.
UPDATE: The mods are OK with this posrt for now, unless anything happens. So for now it's staying up.
Anywho. Download the file, backup and remove HotspotProvision.apk and HotspotProvision.odex from /system/app/ And then drag in this copy of the apk. Put it's permissions to rw-r--r-- and reboot.
You should now be able to set up your mobile hotspot.
I am posting this from my tethered computer
HotspotProvision.apk (98 KB)
Note that I DID NOT CREATE THIS.
If this for some reason is not allowed on here, please let me know and/or delete the post.
Works like a charm, thanks.

Nice....Thank you for posting this. OP post instructions were perfect. Word around the mill is that root is not going to be achieved any time soon on 4.4 (VZW). I am hesitant because I use my phone for internet at my household. Can't lose the ability to wireless tether. If not, anyone who is on 4.4 willing to give it a try?

I'll do you one better.
I'm rooted on 4.4 and I cannot get tethering to work AT ALL.
They removed VZWEntitelmentServices.apk, so we can no longer bypass the stock tethering check.
FoxFi didn't work. Wireless tether for root users didn't work. None of the tethering apps I tried worked.
Tethering on 4.4 is going to be a problem, I can tell.
I saw a post that Foxfi didn't work on a VZW X with KK.
Now, maybe if the app developer updates it to be 4.4 compatible? But I don't use the product, so I don't know what the developer's plans are.

Not that I am aware of. FoxFi was the only Non-root way on JB/4.2.2. But that currently doesn't work on KK/4.4.
Moving my own post to proper thread.
This allows those on the old plan to still utilize tether for free.
For custom TW or stock TW roms.
Flash with latest flash fire.
Make sure you are rooted with PinPong Root 6 or higher.
Also make sure you pick the right one. The last 3 digits of the zip file are the firmware version. Flashing wrong one will boot loop you.
Oh and hit thanks!

It modifies the carrier check for Tether provisioning. If you have tether on your plan then you dont need it. If you dont have Tether then this will get you tether.
I dont know what carrier you have so flashing it, at a minimum will NOT hurt ANYTHING (that I know of).
So to see if you need it, just turn on Tether, if it works, then you dont need patch. If it doesnt work, then use patch.
Hope that helps.
Hit thanks!

My speeds don't seem to be what they should, and I am on a 6.0.1 custom ROM, but never updated the modem file, and afaik none of the custom ROMs do the update, I never did flash a factory update either.
Is there a latest T-Mobile radio or something I could flash to possibly fix my speeds etc.?

I don't.
if I need root after I in a phone, I either use our work computer or ask a friend
I literally do everything with the device itself, like in terminal, or just modifications in its filesystems. only root, unlocking the bootloader(it will never get locked again), and flashing twrp for the first time. flashing radios/bootloaders is usually through a twrp flashable.

Yeah, always a PC somewhere, just in case. No unlimited data in Canada. At least nothing that's not an absurd amount of cash a month. Otherwise I'd drop Internet too. Lol
Yeah I get unlimited LTE (even if I go to Canada) so maybe I'm a bit spoiled too...
