Word around the mill is that root is not going to be achieved any time soon on 4.4 (VZW). I am hesitant because I use my phone for internet at my household. Can't lose the ability to wireless tether. I've seen some apps on the playstore that advertise wireless tethering without root, but I don't want to update and it end up not working. Has anyone tried these apps? If not, anyone who is on 4.4 willing to give it a try?
Much appreciated.

I'll do you one better.
I'm rooted on 4.4 and I cannot get tethering to work AT ALL.
They removed VZWEntitelmentServices.apk, so we can no longer bypass the stock tethering check.
FoxFi didn't work. Wireless tether for root users didn't work. None of the tethering apps I tried worked.
Tethering on 4.4 is going to be a problem, I can tell.
I saw a post that Foxfi didn't work on a VZW X with KK.
Now, maybe if the app developer updates it to be 4.4 compatible? But I don't use the product, so I don't know what the developer's plans are.

I don't know if this would fix the issue as it creates the VZWEntitlementServices.apk but I had success with this on 4.2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2443562 I haven't had a chance to upgrade to 4.4 to try it out but hopefully I'll be able to test it over the weekend.

Only those with unlockable boot loader (VZW Developer Edition, or if your carrier allows boot loader unlock) can root with Kit Kat.

Sorry but it is not working for me. I have it setup like you said, and it looks like it tethers, but I am unable to see the SSID or connect.
Were you able to successfully tether something?
edit; Nvm, it does work, it just takes a really long time for the network to show up... like a few minutes.
I still would prefer native tethering, but this will work for now, ty!

Yes. My iPad Air, iPad 3, and my Bionic (without SIM).
Are you using the EXPERIMENTAL 3.4 version? because the other versions of the app did not work.
So there is no possible way unless you have root?
BTW there is a bounty thread for root,

Not that I am aware of. FoxFi was the only Non-root way on JB/4.2.2. But that currently doesn't work on KK/4.4.

Hi all. I have obtained a modded version of the Mobile Hotspot provisioning for Verizon. This should let you use hotspot without paying VZW for the feature that is free to any non-VZW rom users..
TO CLEAR UP ANY CONFUSION: I am NOT the original developer of this mod. I was directly contacted by the modder who wished to remain anonymous due to the potentially grey legal area of a mod such as this.
Suffice to say that I am not stealing credit, and that I am posting it specifically to act as a shield to the original dev, as per their request. If I need to give a name to avoid flak, then I'll just remove the post rather than break my promise.
UPDATE: The mods are OK with this posrt for now, unless anything happens. So for now it's staying up.
Anywho. Download the file, backup and remove HotspotProvision.apk and HotspotProvision.odex from /system/app/ And then drag in this copy of the apk. Put it's permissions to rw-r--r-- and reboot.
You should now be able to set up your mobile hotspot.
I am posting this from my tethered computer
HotspotProvision.apk (98 KB)
Note that I DID NOT CREATE THIS.
If this for some reason is not allowed on here, please let me know and/or delete the post.
Works like a charm, thanks.

I used root explorer. Renamed files to hotspotprovision.old and hotspotprovisiono.old. Copied in the the apk file, set permissions. About to go on a road trip and this was much needed.
Hooray!

highly doubted. Worst case scenario is it wont work and you get a charge for the tethering fee. But that isn't the case. If you're worried, wait for AOSP of some flavor with built in tethering

Nice....Thank you for posting this. OP post instructions were perfect. The one thing I am noticing about all these mods is that the OP are telling people to delete these original files, when all you have to do is rename them if you don't want to back them up or are nervous about deleting them. Again, thank you!!

Hi guys, I finally got a Moto X today to check out what's the hype all about! I'm very excited but also very new to Android and Moto X. So will need you help.
I'm currently on Verizon 4.2.2. I want to stay on it because I do use FoxFi and 4.4 breaks it. OTA did download on the phone but I delayed the installation. Is there anyway to delete the OTA download file and force stop the OTA?
I tried to force stop the MotorolaOTA but the download resumed after about 20 seconds every time.
I rooted the device thanks for the instruction on this sites. Is my easiest route to use the paid version of Titanium Backup to freeze the MotoOTA? I want to make sure it works before I go ahead and pay for it. Any other alternatives?
Thanks for your help in advance. I tried to browse through about 20 pages or so but didn't really find the answer so I created a new thread.
Yep, go ahead and buy titanium. It works perfectly on my phone. App quarantine does not see the app. Anyone have any free alternatives?

So do I just update through OTA , root 4.4 again and then install that package from this thread with discoverer?
Also I heard 4.4 is a bit buggy so that's why I'm holding back to see what 4.4.2 brings.

Have faith. It should work on ALL carriers.
That method no longer works though.
This allows those on the old plan to still utilize tether for free.
For custom TW or stock TW roms.
Flash with latest flash fire.
Make sure you are rooted with PinPong Root 6 or higher.
Also make sure you pick the right one. The last 3 digits of the zip file are the firmware version. Flashing wrong one will boot loop you.
Oh and hit thanks!

It modifies the carrier check for Tether provisioning. If you have tether on your plan then you dont need it. If you dont have Tether then this will get you tether.
I dont know what carrier you have so flashing it, at a minimum will NOT hurt ANYTHING (that I know of).
So to see if you need it, just turn on Tether, if it works, then you dont need patch. If it doesnt work, then use patch.
Hope that helps.
Hit thanks!

That's what I've been told needs to be done but I haven't had any luck with it
does changing the kernel require root, or just unlocked bootloader? I tried rooting so I could update the build.prop file, but it soft bricked my phone after i rebooted phone and i needed to reflash stock (used no wipe option). So phone is working but no hotspot and no root (scared to try again after the last time!)

Do i need to be rooted to try a different kernel? I am willing to try the one you are using if it gives me back tethering. I dont use it much, and its my data to use, i dont want my carrier preventing me from using it! I have Cricket, i tried calling them to find out if the feature can be added and they said since its a bring your own device that it can't. it worked before i got the 6.0 update! WHY YOU DO THIS GOOGLE!
