Greetings,
I'm stuck in a very bad place with my Nexus 6 and was hoping someone could help me out of it. I obviously made a grave mistake in doing this so I'm hoping all is not lost. Here are the steps I performed that got me into this mess:
1) Downloaded the latest root .zip file from Chainfire, which notably, does not have a 6.0.
2) Flash Stock ROM to the device Marsh mellow 6.
3) Phone booted up just fine, I then unlocked developer options and then selected allow oem updates.
4) performed a reboot to the bootloader.
5) This is where I went wrong: executed the root-windows.bat script.
Now when the device boots I get an error stating the device is corrupt and cannot be trusted and it immediately shuts off.
UPDATE: I've re-flashed the marshmellow rom on to the device and now on boot I get the same error about the device being corrupt, however, the volume buttons allow me to select "Continue" and it's booting!
Thanks!
Eric

1. use supersu v2.5 or v2.51 for root, not chainfires old .
if you flash marshmallow via factory image, via fastboot. boot up, then back into your bootloader to flash the twrp . flash the recovery, then boot into the recovery and flash a custom kernel for marshmallow, and the supersu file. tgen boot up with root. that message is something that everybody gets. it because of your unlicked , just ignore it.

so far ive used despair and elementalx kernels on marshmellow. if you want root, youre going to have to use a custom kernel.

Bummer - Seem's Google is shying away from root. I imagine it's for security reasons. I've not used a custom kernel before so now is as good a time as any to learn. Which do you prefer despair or elementalx?
Thanks again for all your help!

If all else fails use the nexus root toolkit to flash back to stock.

they both are fine. elemental uses a different installer that gives you options when flashing via twrp. despair would be simpler. plus, youll need to downliad a kernel control app from thd play store. there are many free and paid versions.

That is useful to know, I didn't actually realize there was a toolkit for doing this. I will bookmark it in case I REALLY screw up. Thanks for the help!
I used to be a Windows Phone user, so having all this control and ability to customize down to the kernel level is all very new to me, suffice it to say, I've been missing out and am glad I made the switch and won't ever go back.

You've been a tremendous help and I can't thank you enough. I'm so happy to have my phone back to a working state! I feel like such a n00b, but I guess I've got to start some where. I hate to keep bugging you, but what kernel management app do you prefer to use? I like to make sure I get input from people who know what they are doing and I don't want to choose an app that is going to wind up causing me more issues.
Thanks again!

Hi all,
I have a very strange issue after the latest official OTA update to version 7.4.1.
I recognized that my KFHD updated the firmware and after this, I had no root anymore. I used Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v30 and my KFHD was rooted again (confirmed with root checker). Now I see that I am no longer able to user the settings menu at the top, for wireless network connection, brightness, etc., because it is no longer available. From time to time it appears for a very short period, but disappeared at the same time and I have no chance to drop down this menu.
Anyone here with the same problem or who can help me?
Cheers,
Ingo

If you have a recovery installed, I would say just grab the rooted 7.4.1 from the development section and flash that after full wiping. That should solve your issues.

When (if) Kinology gets updated (for 7.4.1 support), flash that and your problem will be solved. Unless you don't care about what software version you are on. In that case just flash it now.

The OTA updated to 7.4.1 and i tried flashing a custom ROM by Hashcode but, recovery isn't working and with a force recovery in FireFire Flash. It shows a yellow triangle with an explanation point. Also, my audio has stopped working but, i may have found a solution.
To keep in mind: Already Rooted with B4NARY's root, and Google Play Installed.
All Help is appreciated!

Personally the only tool I've ever used because I got myself in so deep at one point I had no options was the Kindle SRTool, the others seem to create problems, not because the tools were written bad or anything, but because amazon seems to like pushing out updates that don't really update much, but change things just enough to mess with the functionality of the tools. If you can get back to fast boot, you should just use the SRTool and start fresh. Then go to prokkenexxusa's rooting thread and use the manual root method not the automatic.

I didn't click flash script when I rebooted into recovery from fire flash. In fire flash you have a couple options, two mandatory, using a older bootloader as the 2nd. flash a boot partition image, apply stack override, flash a recovery partition image, disable auto recovery auto update, then wipe cache wipe data wipe system install zip files, flash and install script. Lastly reboot and reboot into recovery. :victory:
So did you get your issues sorted OK, or are you still having problems?
I have never done an OTA update as when I first got into Android I was flashing ROMs nearly every week and never waited for updates just flashed a new ROM, however when I got my Nexus 6 I decided to just root and stick with stock.
I woke this morning and the 5.1 update was available but when I download it and select install and reboot it boots into recovery (TWRP) and I can't see where the download is - I presume I am having to flash it myself? So I have to reboot and it says I am up-to-date with 5.0.1 and then an hour later the download is available again and I go through the same process.
Can anyone help, tell me where i am going wrong.
I had same issue after relocking bootloader and this worked for me and hopefully it may work for you. Put phone in fastboot mode.(hold power + volume down) then use fastboot command fastboot -w
How do you define stock if you have TWRP. LOL

Same issue here. Let us know how you make out.
Hate to do a "me too" post, but I've had the exact same experience.
I'll wait to see whether the fastboot -w method works before I do anything else.
I did try to find the (410.4Mb) download on my N6, but I suspect that the failed update must have deleted it, as it's asking me to download it again.
fastboot -w just wiped userdata so needed to do a fresh install and was still at 5.0.1. So just had to install my backup again to get back to where I was this morning.
Ouch! Sorry to hear it (though glad that you had a backup) - thanks for saving the rest of us from trying that particular route.
I'm still looking for a way to get to 5.1.
You can't do an OTA update with a NON-STOCK recovery.
You can however, if your bootloader is unlocked, download the factory image, extract it, and flash the system.img, bootloader.img, radio.img, cache.img etc...use fastboot to flash those.
Or you can fastboot flash the stock recovery, and take the OTA again.
Thanks.
I assume that I can also use Nexus Root Toolkit to "Flash Stock + Unroot" (without wiping the device), then take the OTA update to 5.1, and then use NRT to Root again?
Just doing a full backup at the moment before I start playing!
UPDATE: The above worked fine.
I started with 5.0.1, rooted, unlocked Bootloader
Then, in Nexus Root Toolkit, I used:
1) Backup (using Create Nandroid Backup w/Custom Recovery option)
2) Flash Stock + Unroot (using No Wipe Mode. I also had to enable Force Flash Mode)
Then, on the phone, accept the OTA 5.1 update, which downloaded and installed first time.
Back to NRT, and:
3) Root and also flash Custom Recovery
I ended up with 5.1, rooted, unlocked Bootloader (and all my apps and data were untouched).
Since doing the method recommended in the second post the OTA update hasn't been available on my device?
Have you tried rebooting the phone?
Or going into Settings > About Phone > System Updates > Check for Updates
It's always possible (if unlikely) that Google have stopped the roll-out to fix some of the issues that people have been reporting with SmartLock, etc?

Why did you take the scenic route? This is by far the longest method to do that.
Instead of flashing stock with nrt, why not just flash stock normally? That way you could have just flashed 5.1 without having to take any OTA...
And further, if you wanted to keep recovery, why not just flash the system and boot image keeping everything else as it is? Then just flash SuperSU from twrp?
2 commands
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Boot into recovery and flash root.
Much quicker than the method you used.

Well, my fist step was a backup, which you conveniently left out - you may be happy to update your phone without backing it up first, but I chose not to take that chance.
Apart from that, it's about the same number of steps - I was happy to take 5.1 OTA (which meant that I was certain that it was the correct version for my phone), and Nexus Root Toolkit is a much nicer piece of software to use than fastboot. I know that some people don't like NRT because they feel that it demystifies the black arts of updating and it threatens their voodoo status, but I find it an excellent piece of software and recommend it to you.
In the meantime, while you had to go and find the appropriate system.img and the appropriate boot.img and download them before fastbooting them, these were steps that I was able to avoid whilst enjoying my "scenic" journey.
So you take the high road and I'll take the low road - but I reckon that it took me no longer to update my phone than it took you to update yours!

To be honest no. The route you took was so long that I thought you just didn't have a clue about what you were doing so I thought I'd help out and let you know the quicker version... And if anyone reads your post and thinks its the best way to do it, well now they have some contrast.
What bothers me is your attitude however. But I don't care enough to get into an argument with people who would rather waste their time and the people they try to help than listen to constructive criticism.
But yeah, your way is needlessly long so I hope people don't take your lead.
#1-"com.tmobile.pr.adapt (10001) has been granted superuser permissions for an interactive shell" pops up on my screen every 30 seconds on the bottom of my screen in a grey box.
#2- i also noticed that i can accept and recieve calls but i can not hear, nor can the other person hear me. if i use hangouts video call, skype, etc it works fine.
#3-i also tried to get rom manager to make a recovery and it says it needs to get CWD recovery to install a new software, the first thing we need to do is install a up to date version, we will begin that process now... etc.. then it says to get started you must first sset up a custom recovery, it gives two options a samsung galaxy s3 on metro pcs or a samsung previal 2 on boost mobile, or device not listed, when i click that it says "SM-G920T does not have an officially supported CWDR yet. Have you installed a CWD based recovery manually?" so im not sure what to do from there, or if i even need that. i have been a iphone user since day one went to android after reading up a lot on it, although rooting is quite different than jailbreaking it seems, i am incredibly excited to get started if i can get past these little problems and get started and figure everything out. ANY advice, or anwsers to these problems would be Greatly appreciated! thanks!
Also i went to dev options in settings and noticed the "OEM unlocking- allow the bootloader to be unlocker" was turned off, i dont know if this is necessary to root if i did something wrong by not turning it on or what, or if it may fix any problems above if i turn it on now. thanks!
I have a samsung Galaxy S6 (SM_G920T) . i Rooted and did not trip Knox, Although i did just remember that my fingerprint sensor is not working either.
Thank you guys so much this si a incredible forum i have spent hours and hours reading and researching before making this post i appreciate it so much!
#1 Freeze that ****. Use some root tool to freeze that T-mobile apk, seems u gave it root permissions at some point. I believe there are a lot of apps that you will want to do the same.
#2 ? No idea. Stock rom/kernel?
#3 What is this I don't even. Don't do that. Go to TWRP's official web, get your zeroflte (SM-GT920T) twrp and flash it via ODIN, or else get the recovery.img and use flashify. All that assuming you want a custom recovery.
You will need to unlock the bootloader if you are on 5.1.1. I believe locked will prevent changes or wiping anything on the OS partitions, even recovery (can someone confirm?)
I believe jailbraking and rooting should be pretty much similar, if not the same, as both target to grant the user root access to do whatever he pleases on the OS.
Welcome to android btw.
How did you root? Sounds like you used the modified sboot which causes no sounds in calls and nonfunctional fingerprint scanner. If so, flash back to stock and use a different rooting method. The rest, pretty much what the above poster stated
Root
I rooted using the version that I found the only one that works it seemed like, went to Odin put my phone In download mode and then put the boot loader download in BL and the. Put a something unikernel.sbin I believe, whatever the guide said also then it was done. I thought you couldn't use the twrp or custom recovery etc on tmobile one yet but I just read a thing about xtrestolite odex pure v2 which says it's for 5.1.1 and my model of phone but in the guide it says to root using CF auto root and a link there to it but the link doesn't have my phone on the list that the guide that clearly is my phone says to use I don't know if I'm missing something but I want to use it I understand most of it but I don't know if I need to unropt first and re root then use Odin and flash twrp that's supported on my phone then use that to recover the rom. Etc. The kernel that says is used in the guide is the same one I downloaded so do I need to remove it all then let it do that or?
Sorry if this didn't make sense I'm halfway there between confused and understood I have spent the last 10 hours reading and trying to figure this out though lol. Thanks guys!
Also
Sorry for adding more but also how do I flash back to stock? Search for the download to the stock image of my phone? Also I could only find one way of rooting everything else said it wasn't working yet or am I missing a big portion of something here?
Just flash the 5.1.1 firmware to return to stock. To root, flash unikernel with Odin. The other method you used was to not trip knox, but as you experienced has side effects. I had to Odin back to 5.1.1 myself. Can't have those issues
thanks!
so how do i flash back to 5.1.1? find the ling to completely stock 5.1.1 and flash through odin in the same spot and same way i flashed the kernel to root? also.. i rooted with " s6_UniKernel_v2-0003-ODIN.tar" is that not the one you were talking about?

Yes, flashing to 5.1.1 works exactly like that. You need to get the version for your model (very important on this one) and then simply place that file in the AP field of ODIN while the device is in recovery mode. It is normal for ODIN to freeze for 2 minutes while verifying. Make sure to use a MD5 checker tool on the firmware before flashing.
Rooting has historically required more technical savvy and balls than jailbreaking, but PingPong made rooting the S6 brain-dead simple. CF-Auto root is still pretty painless, but you must make sure you have the right zip for your device.
Anyhoo, the quickest & easiest way to restore phone calls & fingerprint scan is to use Odin to get back to bone stock.
Next, use PingPong to root. After rooting, "com.tmobile.pr.adapt" will ask for root access. That is T-Mobile's "phone home" app and sends info about your device (probably including root status). Deny it root access and make sure you check "Remember my choice", and it won't bother you again. You will not lose any functionality by denying it root, so terminate that crap.
Don't bother with rom manager. CWM is archaic. If you want a custom recovery, use TWRP. You can install TWRP either using Odin or TWRP Manager app (it's free).
Good luck and have fun with your S6

Are you still rooted? If so, and if you are experiencing the call audio issue, go flash AOU's kernel. He has made a kernel for the tmo s6. that should eliminate your call audio issue. The finger print scanner is the only issue with flashing his kernel. Also, I rooted with the modded sboot, his TWRP and kernel, and I didn't trip knox

Hello XDA forums,
I really don't like the issue of trying to set the drivers of fastboot/google and so on....also all of these adb commands.
Is there a way to unlock bootloader & root by:
1) one of these "1 click" tools that do everything for the use? (such as "wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit")
2) Just do everything by the phone? (if there is a possible to install some how a recovery such as twrp and than root by some app?)
Could anybody guide me through the steps, if needed?
Many thanks!

AFAIK you will need a pc to 1)unlock your bootloader and 2)flash TWRP. After that the rest can be done locally. I also never used any toolkit. Making it easy is making it more dangerous IMHO.

So at least once you need to connect your phone to a desktop computer. It can be practically running anything, within reason of course: Wiindows. Mac OSX, Linux (almost any distro).
You need to unlock your bootloader with one command, but a warning here: Unlocking the bootloader will erase everything from your phone..
Then you need to install a custom recovery, preferably TWRP. After that everything can be done from the phone itself. Well at least until you soft brick it somehow, then you'll might have to use the PC again.
Also two things:
1. No OTAs for rooted phones
2. Don't lock your bootloader if you want to mess with it, because with a locked bootloader, and Enable OEM Unlocking set to off, and without TWRP, if you soft brick it accidentally, you are boned.

Does NTRT do that?
Thank you all.
we are eventually goung to have a "my n6 is bricked, how do i fix it with one click" thread here. seriously though, thats what happens when you use toolkits, but do no real research about modding your device.
Toolkits are fine if you first understand what they are doing. Otherwise it's like giving a hand grenade to a child to play with.

Guess many users completed the unlocking & rooting by this tool
Why not?

i agree with you. if there is somebody who knows the ins and outs already, a one click root would be great. and there will be. problem is that marshmallow just came out, and a few things have changed, like like yoe also need a custom kernel to have root on marshmallow.

There is a reason you're pushing this topic, and I'm quite sure it's because you would feel safer, if there was a tool that did the scary things instead of you. Well, there's no such tool. If you were willing to search XDA, you would find out that the first two weeks after Marshmallow came out were about people bricking their Nexus 6s with toolkits. Then the toolkit got updated and suddenly it knew that is has to flash a modified boot.img too for the root not to brick the phone. But for two weeks it didn't know, because it wasn't necessary for Lollipop. And it will only work until the next security update comes out. And that's once a month.
Meanwhile those who were willing to use the search function, and learned the five minute procedure, were able to update their rooted phones to the next security update and were able to root it as soon as the new modified boot image came out.
And this above is not something somebody will put in a help, or instructions for future updates.
Actually, this is my first time and I was able to do it pretty easily.
fastboot devices
fastboot oem unlock
my bootloader was unlocked within 30 seconds of turning it on.
then, you can easily root via CF Auto root. Just put it into fastboot then doubleclick on the windows, then root, etc....
or.............go into fastboot flash recovery twrpxxxx.img, then it always offers to run SuperSU, and you get custom recovery and root at the same time, etc......
actually the biggest pain is unlocking the bootloader. My Galaxy S4 already was unlocked, so all I did was use goomanager, flash TWRP which always offers to run SuperSU if you don't have it.
Pretty easy, I did unlock bootloader, root, and custom recovery in 10 min.
---------- Post added at 01:48 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:44 AM ----------
............................Then I got sick of stock Google's ROM in 15 min and wiped it and put a custom ROM instead.
Thank you all so much...
@mikeprius
Thank you so much for the info'!
But, could you plz write more details? such as:
1. How did you installed the drivers? (from my expirience, many times the pc dosent install this easily).
I just need the Google oem driver and that's it?
2. When drivers was set - did you made anything in your phones settings? Which?
3. What did you had to do before pushing the files? (Like...put all the files in the same folder? *which files?)
4. And then entered to fastboot mode and typed in these commands in pc:
fastboot devices
fastboot oem unlock
Regarding your last sentence ("or...."):
If i just flash the recovery via fastbot mode I can enter to twrp recovery and it offers to flash the SuperSU?
Sounds to me the best option.
Thanks!
1. The drivers were set from a previous device, so I didn't have to set them, but they can be downloaded and set though.
2. You need to enable developer options and select OEM unlock and USB debugging.
3. I didn't push the files, I just had them on my computer and ran fastboot commands.
4. Those commands are to unlock the bootloader.
There are a lot of different ways to do the same thing (Root, custom recovery, unlock bootloader)
1. Run CF Auto Root on a locked bootloader. It will unlock it automatically (Chainfire has it set that way), root, then download Flashify app and flash the latest img of TWRP.
2. Run fastboot commands to manually unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP, then use TWRP's SuperSU which will root it.
3. Run fastboot commands to unlock bootloader, run CF Autoroot which will root and load SuperSU, then flash TWRP via Flashify or fastboot.
There are many different ways to do the same thing. I actually just googled youtube videos and watched them.
TWRP has SuperSU and root built in. TWRP knows if you don't have it and offers to load it for you.
I went the scenic route just because, but presumably you can achieve all (3) using Option #1 without having to deal with fastboot, adb, etc.....Chainfire's script runs automatically.
I realy try to help people but users that run into problems because of the usage of tookits (and innability to solve problems and/or even lack the most basic knowledge needed) should ask the toolkit dev. for support imo, and not boughter users that have invested time and effort to gain that knowledge to clean up their mess. Period
Hi guys. I somehow messed things up really bad.
I was running a modded ROM, but decided I wanted to go back to unrooted stock. I followed this instructions in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6avEPGWB8E0
Unfortunately, things didn't work out. When I tried flashing the files it kept saying "system not found". Now I'm stuck in recovery forever. If I try to press start, nothing happens. If I scroll up to factory, nothing happens either. If I look at the Bootloader logs, all it says is "failed to validate system image. Boot up failed".
The one good thing is that the phone recognizes being plugged into my computer (Windows 10), so maybe there's a small chance I can get my phone back. If you guys have a solution, please let me know, as I'm pretty distraught right now. Also hoping there's a chance I can get my photos back that are on the device, though that seems unlikely now.
Unrooted stock? I can possibly see going back to rooted stock, or at least a CF (rooted) stock-based ROM, but not unrooted stock. "Please make me a slave again. Please, I don't like owning my phone."
Do you still have TWRP custom recovery or do you only have stock recovery? If you have TWRP, use the File Manager and drag over a custom ROM from your PC, and flash it.

Long story short, I'm a slave to Pokemon Go. I used to be super passionate about having my phone rooted and everything, but I found I wasn't really using the rooted features at all. I can completely understand the appeal of having it rooted, it's just not something I need right now.
Unfortunately I have the stock recovery, and nothing seems to be loading on it.

Is your bootloader still unlocked? Can you connect your phone via ADB and re-flash TWRP? Forget about Pokemon Go for now and just get your phone back to working.
Also with custom ROMs you can still run the ROM and UNroot your phone. (I know you can with CM.) No need to go back to stock, unless parent company of Pokemon is clueless and demands stock.
Well, seems they are clueless and doing what Android Pay does:
http://www.xda-developers.com/lates...blocks-rooted-devices-from-entering-the-game/
What Niantic has managed to do with the update is kill off the enthusiasm in users who had root but were not cheating. Root is used for many more things outside of cheating in a game, and to assume that all rooted users are cheaters is just silly.
_____
After some more reading around, it seems Niantic is actually using the SafetyNet checks to check for root. XDA Senior Member MaaarZ found the SafetyNetService being called in the game code. Niantic is really making users jump through the whole nine yards, as this is the same method employed by Android Pay. This means that if you do need to run Pokémon GO on a rooted device, you need to go through the whole Magisk and systemless root way. Or stop playing completely, because that is what Niantic wants you to do.

First of all thanks for your prompt responses. I really appreciate it.
I've always sort of had trouble getting ADB to work. I'm pretty sure the only version ADB I have installed on my laptop is the Fastboot version I downloaded from the video I linked. As I'm typing this, I'm currently downloading Android SDK and RSDLite, though the process is taking a while.
I think my bootloader is unlocked, but I'm not entirely sure. I think when I installed the custom rom, root first came out on the turbo. The method I used was the Mofo method. If I need to install a more elaborate version of ADB I will do so, I just might need clarification on what particular version is most optimal to use.

The MoFo method was not bootloader unlock, and it only worked on KitKat. Wow, you were still using MoFo?
Real bootloader unlock came via Sunshine ($25) last November 2015, and you needed at least stock Lollipop 5.1 with Verizon firmware SUTL-44. It also now works with Verizon SUTL-49.
If you never paid for Sunshine, then your bootloader was never unlocked.
However, using ADB you can re-flash stock firmware even with a locked bootloader.
Some Droid Turbo owners like @TheSt33v will be more help than me as to what version you should flash. I own three Quarks but not the Droid Turbo. But as long as you are flashing, might was well update to SUTL-49.
IF you can't find a good download of SUTL-49, here's at least SUTL-44. Thank @bhb27.

You need neither the SDK nor RSDLite. If you're interested in unlocking your bootloader (and returning to pokemon go-ready stock in the process), follow my guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/general/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-install-t3292684. If you don't want to unlock your bootloader, and you want to return to stock kitkat so that you can continue using mofo, let me know what build you're on (see "about phone" in your settings) and I can send you a link to the firmware package that you'll need. If you want to update to the latest firmware and you don't care about unlocking your bootloader (maybe ever), only follow section 0 of my guide and take whatever OTA updates you are given with the understanding that you'll probably never be able to unlock your bootloader again after taking them.

Thank you guys. I was able to revive my phone from the dead using your advice. Unfortunately, I lost all of the photos from my trip to Europe, but overall I'm happy my phone is back and running. That will be a lesson to me to be less lazy about backing up my data.
Once again, thank you very much.
Someone over in Resurrection Remix thread got Pokemon Go to work with Root Cloak:
