Rooting Android 6.0! - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys! So I heard that Android Marshmallow now requires a custom kernel to have SuperSU binaries installed and working! Is there ever going to be a way around this? Or is this just the way rooting is going to be from now on? Also, is it true that Android 6.0 now gives an error and doesn't boot if the system is changed for security reasons? And if that's the case, what's a really good kernel to use that doesn't force encrypt and supports root? Just as basic ad possible, not to crazy about ridiculous kernel mods! Thanks!

Wow! Didn't know chainfire made that kernel! Does it force encryption? Or give the option? I just wanna know because I wanna know if I need to format my userdata or not for this. I'm 100% stock right now.

It's just a modified boot.img. It doesn't do anything with encryption and you don't need to format userdata. From what I remember, it just allows rooting, makes system writable, and disables the corrupted device message.

I'd just flash a rooted rom

I've had roms on this phone before, but I've always wiped the data and never formatted, do most custom roms not force encrypt?

roms have nothing to do with it. its kernels, most custom kernels dont force encrypt. but.. you have to actuvely decrypt manually to be decrypted. thats done by formatting user data, which will wipe your phone clean.

But all custom roms have kernels in them don't they?

[Q] Encryption/Decryption during flashing

So my question is, what does this deal with and how do this affect flashing between roms? Is userdata somehow u readable because of the encryption if you leave one rom and into the next? I'm on the stock rom, unlocked and rooted, and haven't flashed a different rom yet but I'm getting ready to...
If you already disabled encryption then most custom roms will not force encryption when flashed. However, in order to disable encryption for the first time you need to format/wipe userdata. Bottom line is, if you don't wanna lose any data, backup to a PC, then decrypt. Once your decrypted you can flash between roms and you will stay decrypted.
O ok, I haven't decrypted yet, and am planning on flashing another rom, I'm guessing I have to decrypt before I flash?

It depends on what kernel is shipped with the ROM. If you flash a custom kernel over the ROM's existing kernel then you'll be fine assuming the custom kernel's encrypt is "encryptable" in other words, the kernel will leave your phone at its current state (encrypt/decrypted) it won't alter.
And if you flash a decrypted rom /kernel, over the stock which is encrypted, you'll lose your info?

No. If you're unencrypted and you flash a kernel that is ENCRYPT only then your device will just encrypt.
If you want to unencrypt, you'll have to wipe your internal storage to unencrypt again.

So once you unencrypt, then you have to stay unencrypted or else you'll have to wipe everything again?
What about when you move data from your phone to the computer then back to your phone? Does it matter if it started off encrypted, moved to the comp, then moved back to an unencrypted phone? Would it be able to be read?

No. If you're unencrypted and you flashed a kernel that is encrypt only, it'll simply encrypt your phone. But if you want to unencrypt, you'll have to wipe everything.
Yes it would read. You're making this way too complicated, its very simple.
Unencrypted -> You remain unencrypted if you flash a kernel that is encryptable; whereas, stock kernel is force-encrypt.
Encrypt -> You remain encrypted if you flash a kernel that is encryptable.
It does not change encrypt to unencrypted and vice versa. The only time it'll change is if you flash a kernel that is force-encrypt while being unencrypted (e.g. Faux Kernel or stock Google Kernel)
O ok thanks for the help! Makes sense... Surprised faux kernel is force-encrypt... Understandable that stock Google would be but a custom one to force-encrypt is odd
Guess I better make sure that I don't flash a custom kernel that is force-encrypt

A user from the forum thread made a non-forceable encrypted kernel so its not forced .. I believe Faux chose force-encrypt because he believes the shamu is supposed to be encrypted. Most kernels are not force-encrypt, you can always search the thread or ask.
Ok I believe I decrypted my phone correctly.... It now says this under security so I'm guessing it's decrypted...

If you unlocked the boot loader, rooted and have TWRP custom recovery, you just need to :
1. Download rom and gapps to your phone. Links should be found in the OP of the ROM's thread. If you wish Google to restore your apps be sure you have selected the backup-auto restore in settings.
2. Do unencryption now if you wish.
3. Boot into TWRP recovery and wipe a couple times.
4. From TWRP, install the rom and gapps.
5. Reboot system, sign into your Google account and let it download and restore your apps.
6. Reboot system once more & you should be gtg.

Should be in the Chroma OP or close thereby as to whether you need the boot loader.
I would think for sure a wipe or two. Boot loader, maybe. Radio, at your discretion.

I checked. Instructions and prerequisites are in the OP of the Chroma thread.
I also updated my Nexus 6 with 5.0.1, unlock and root, to 5.1 without losing data. I just had to re-root it afterwards.
I used Wugfresh Nexus root toolkit.
In short I used "Flash stock + unroot", in which I selected "Enable no-wipe" and "force-flash".
After this I rerooted the device from within NRT.
Worked like a charm!

Well can you be my guinea pig and flash chroma without doing everything else? worst thing that could happen is it not boot into the rom and wrong radio will just make your phone not pickking up signel intil you flashed radio. but chroma dont say anything about flashing bootloader so i dont think its needed.
BTW ims still on rooted stock 5.0.1.

No encrption on LYZ28E

Hi everyopne. Just noticed something interesting on my nexus 6. I restored factory image yesterday to start of clean with the LYZ28E update. I used Wugs to restore. After restoring and flashing Sinless 6.3.0 everything was good except my data partition was only showing 23 gb. Seems to be a common problem so I did fastboot format userdata as suggested by a few to fix the problem. That fixed the problem and then just to start fresh I reflashed sinless. All is running very good now. Just a few minutes ago I went into security under settings and noticed the I am no longer encrypted. I thought this was weird. Did something change that Google in no longer doing forced encryption on 5.1.1 or did I unencrypt some how by doing format userdata in fastboot. I was under the impression that I needed to flash the special boot.img when restoring the factory image in Wugs. I did mot do any of this. Just want to make sure nothing went wrong. I don't care about being not encrypted so not worried about changing it to encrypted just want to make sure nothing went wrong. Thank you.

Yes this.
Format removes encryption, then if you have a kernel that doesn't force encrypt, you won't be encrypted at boot, like stock kernel would. You can encrypt via settings if you want.

Encryption doesn't matter, but the kernel needs to be 100% stock for WiFi Calling to work. Any modified kernels currently available won't allow WiFi Calling to work.

First, why are you trying to unroot?
You would download a factory image form the Google developer page. Extract twice, and grab the system image from there. Yes, match the version your phone is currently on.

yup I found that most are pre-rooted, though found cleancore that works great. I've just installed multirom and that booted into it then tested a couple of apps that are blocked on root (Banking app and Sky Go), and happy days they work great.
Its annoying and rather wasteful having have a second rom just to run a couple of apps but at least now I can use the apps on my device if I want to. Thanks
Typical apps block hacking (root) so the work around instead of unrooting is to go deeper with the hacks/mods

Yeah a lot of people know this means a rom that packs a boot.img that has ramdisk with the fstab.shamu with the data partition mount options changed from forceencrypt to encryptable, but still can be misleading to the less tech savvy readers who might misunderstand it, and believe that encrypting is in the rom part of the flashable zip file.
This is a step in the right direction

It is quite easy just to flash stock images and then flash modified boot.img, twrp recovery and SuperSu. Sure, It is few more click and commands, but it's really that simple...done in a minute...
And for Kernel I am using this one. It is stock one (no encryption) with some added features like vibration control.
