I have Marshmallow installed. When I plug my thumb drive or SD card reader into my OTG cable and plug it in, my Nexus 6 sees it. I can browse the thumbdrive in the default file explorer.
How do I get other apps (such as Poweramp) to see the thumb drive? Can I do this without root?

Short answer, no.
If the app isnt designed to look in other media devices, you'll need root to make those devices visible within the folders that the app can see.. Example, create a folder in sdcard called USB and use folder mount to mount the USB stick in there.
So basically USB OTG is worthless in Marshmallow?

How is it worthless if it works?
Just root and use Stickmount.
I did that with Lollipop. Since Marshmallow was supposed to support USB OTG without root, I didn't root when I installed Marshmallow. I just can't figure out what the point of it is in the non rooted form. All it does, at best, is maybe copy files to and from a USB drive. Other than that, not much you can do with it without rooting your phone.

It's your apps fault, not marshmallow. Apps will need to be updated and some just won't be.

Dear friends,
I searched in google for the OTG Support for xperia sp, I got several answers shows that, someone said YES and someone said NO.
Actually I'm using C5302 without root (in .266 F/W), in my experiance it wont support OTG. Several times i connected the XSP with different pendrives, but nothing happens. But In storage menu there is an option for Mount USB Storage... what is the use of that? Some websites shows xperia sp has OTG support. So my questions are
1. Could any one connect OTG without root?
2. If YES, is ur device C5302 or C5303?
3. Is it possible with any other File Manager (like solid explorer)?
4. If i root my device, is this possible?
one more thing, in solid explorer there is a folder available for USB storage. When i touch it shows no root access. If i root my device can i access that folder? is this folder contains external usb storage?
Well, I'm still on .254 but my OTG cable works. The USB-folder is normally on XSP /storage/usbdisk/. Weird though, because I never heard of Android 4.3 uncompatibility. Even ICS supports OTG. You might check your cable.

I'm not sure about this, but I think there was some article about S3 needing a special cable for OTG, the usual ones didn't work. It was mentioned that the cable that worked for S2 wouldn't work with S3. So it could be that this special cable would not work for other phones?
If you can, try another cable, something that works with other phones, just not the latest Galaxy series.
Friends,
When i connect my pendrive, it dosent shows any change in my phone. But lost.dir folder appear in pendrive(when it connect with PC) does it mean my phone detect that pendrive? but i cant access any thing. is ter any step to follow? already check with new cable and new pendrive, but no change.
Otg works normally straight out the box.
If you are still facing problems try using, stick mount or otg helper apps free on play store.
I don't have issue on Sp... but my n7 does and these apps help.

I think, c5302 cannot support OTG without root...!!!!! Anyone here could connect c5302 with OTG without root?
Maybe your pendriver is NTFS, it support FAT32 only i belive
Filesystem can be one of the reason.
I have c5303 and can connect lot of devices without root on .254 stock rom. Only my 16GB Kingston Pendrive didnt work
On 4.3 Kingston pendrive work as well. Without root.
I dont think that for OTG in c5302 you MUST have root. Its "normal" device support. It didnt ask for persmissions when you connect usb device. Just try at first generic mouse or keyboard and see if it work. When not. Try another cable.
Also try .266 firmware. It has a little more drivers for USB devices. (example my Kingston)

May be thats whta the reason.. I will check and reply
OTG
I can confirm it working on .254 (100% fresh, unrooted). Sometimes I don't get a notification for a connected USB disk, however I can access it using ES explorer
Finally... I conculded that.............
No otg support for xperia SP C5302 without root...........!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its too sad
I check with 3 different cables and 8 different pendrives ( including sandisk, kingston sony and transend etc)
But nothing happens.. In solid explorer there is a folder names USB Disk.. when i tap on that it shows no root access (Im running unrooted) also USB Disk mount in storage menu still not tappable
If anyone could get OTG in C5302 pls post the reply with steps....

The pendrives were FAT32 formatted?
As I have understood from other threads FAT32 should work and NTFS will not work.

I've been trying to access a USB drive on my 32GB Nexus 6 with the 11th of April CM12 nightly installed. ES File manager is capable of accessing the drive, but nothing else seems to be able to see it.
Stickmount complains that the mount service is busy if I try to mount or unmount. There is, of course, a warning about not using SuperSU because I am using the built in CM root - has anyone got it working with that? I would rather continue to use CM's root.
I've also tried USB OTG Helper from the Play Store, but that force closes when trying to mount.
I note that the same drive works on a OnePlus One running CM12 nightlies - the OS detects it and mounts automatically, and the drive is accessible thereafter by any file manager.

I tried, but the "USB Computer Connection" option in settings/storage doesn't do anything when tapped other than cause a rescan of the internal storage.
I want to use a USB OTG cable to make nandroid backups on a USB drive.. And, if possible, I want to be able to access files from solid explorer..
I'm currently on stock 5.0.2, stock kernel.. USB mouse works, but USB drive doesn't..
Anyone can confirm a working rom, kernel, mod, tweak or recovery that supports USB-OTG?

I'm using File Explorer app (fx)
I made it work on stock lollipop!
USB drive was formatted with fat32, and it was not recognized by CM12.1.. So I decided to format it using android (in storage settings).. Then it worked! I unplugged otg cable and connected USB drive to my laptop, and filesystem was still fat32 (maybe android handles it with another method?)..
Then I restored my stock 5.0.2 nandroid backup, plugged it and it still worked! I finally plugged it on recovery and still works!
Lollipop is already compatible with USB drives, but they need to be formatted using android
I think your USB drive could have been formatted with some unsupported partition layout mbr/gpt.
My phone has recognized every USB drive I plug in but only shows the first partition when I tried a drive with many partitions (w8.1 installation for example)

Last time I made a bootable drive, it was memtest.. Then I deleted all partitions and created a FAT32 partition using CMD->diskpart
I'm REALLY sure it had 1 partition before formatting with android
Hello, I have a little problem with the OTG function on Marshmallow.
With Lollipop when I plugged my external storage (Meenova 2nd Gen with 64gb micro sd) I could access the files on my OTG storage with the Gallery app, Mx Player and Google Play Music it was really useful.
Now when I plug it with Marshmallow I can't access my files with my apps as if my OTG storage was not mounted as before.
I used ES Explorer with Lollipop and my OTG Storage was mounted in /mnt/storage but now it is recognize as usb:// and I think it is why I can't access my file with my apps now.
I don't know what to do, I bought these OTG Storage to store musics but I can't play them with Google Play Music. Now I can just listen one by one with ES Explorer it is really boring.
Could you help me please.
Same Here, XT1095
I have not been able to use my meenova gen 1 since. Lollipop
No ideas so ? :s
I purchased a new otg thumb drive. I gave up on the card readers for now.

The location of the usb-otg (storage) on marshmallow, is only visible under root on /mnt/media_rw/xxxxxxxx (random name)
Or the option on notification bar, in the stock navigator, I think it's a security measure
Sorry for replying late.
Okay thank you, but can we pass over this security mesure ? I want to use my external storage like I did in Lollipop
Hi everyone,
I've experienced the same problem since the Marshmallow update . Under Lollipop I used to coy/paste all my photos and videos from my Moto X to my USB OTG storage, but it seems to be not possible anymore.
The only solution I've found is to use a paid app called USB OTG File Manager, it works perfectly on our Moto though it's originally dedicated to the nexus devices .
Oh thanks, but I wanted to access to my image through the image app or to my music through google music
No problems with OTG here with my XT1097 Marshmallow
What type of otg device?
my device is xioami mi3 and m having same problem..
no solutions yet for this?
M rooted n I still can't c it under /mnt/

Update your es file explorer and change the format of otg to fat32 on PC... Same happened to me before but I think es is now updated for it!
Will there be any chance of regular apps, like music players being able to see the USB OTG drives? I hate that I am now limited to just internal storage on my limited 16GB MOTO X, sadly only option I had with USC. The USB OTG at least allowed me to have music and some ripped movies and now no more. Wondering if I should go back to Lollipop? At least I could use my USB OTG on it......
---------- Post added at 09:05 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:57 AM ----------
Does anyone have a fix for this so that I can access my music on my USB OTG? The new way the Marshmallow mounts the drive is total BS and really makes no sense. On Lollipop I had full access and now pretty much the built in file explorer and ES File Explorer but no apps will see the music files or play them. I really hope by now there is an easy fix. Thanks XDA Community!
Great news guys, I found the fix
I don't know if the bootloader needs to be unlocked but I know the smartphone doesn't need to be rooted.
You have to install the adb drivers of the Moto X. Then do this command : "adb shell sm set-force-adoptable true" while you're phone is connected to the computer.
Then you will be able to read files from apps of your usb otg
(I tested it on a 7.1.1 ROM, but I read that it works on marshmallow)
Hope it helps you guys
Since we don't have an SD card slot, I am guessing a lot of folks are using OTG arrangements.
Anyone using an OTG drive with their phone for backing it up and shuttling media files back and forth?
My main need is for an external destination for backups, but I would also like to store a bunch of music for swapping off and on the phone.
I have an older small (16GB) OTG drive that I used successfully on my S4 and G2 and G3, but the Nexus does not seem to want to show the drive when I attach it.
Is there a trick to making it work or is there some hidden setting in Titanium Backup to make it visible as a destination? Is there a "best" file manager to do this?
I am rooted with TWRP and running stock MMB29V.
Thanks in advance for any guidance!
Update: I installed Stick Mount and it mounted my SP OTG drive and I was able to browse it, etc.
Once I did that, Ti BU could actually see it as a destination and I am happily backing up to my (older, smallish) drive.
Now, what bothers me is the dang drive is hot as hell and that can't be good!
Anyone familiar? I only have the one OTG drive so can't see if it is the drive or the phone.
Thanks again.

As I said in first post "running stock MMB29V"
All stock Marshmallow, except rooted and TWRP installed.
Kernel is what came with that I guess: 3.10.40

I do use OTG drives to back up my stuff. I use a 1 TB Western Digital My Passport Ultra to back up with. I prefer to use an OTG cable with a power slot so it can use pretty much any storage medium. I can't use it now because I keep getting Error 255 when it executes createTarfork. Wish somebody would help me with that. http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/twrp-error-255-t3357541
