OTG drives and backing up Nexus 6 - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since we don't have an SD card slot, I am guessing a lot of folks are using OTG arrangements.
Anyone using an OTG drive with their phone for backing it up and shuttling media files back and forth?
My main need is for an external destination for backups, but I would also like to store a bunch of music for swapping off and on the phone.
I have an older small (16GB) OTG drive that I used successfully on my S4 and G2 and G3, but the Nexus does not seem to want to show the drive when I attach it.
Is there a trick to making it work or is there some hidden setting in Titanium Backup to make it visible as a destination? Is there a "best" file manager to do this?
I am rooted with TWRP and running stock MMB29V.
Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Update: I installed Stick Mount and it mounted my SP OTG drive and I was able to browse it, etc.
Once I did that, Ti BU could actually see it as a destination and I am happily backing up to my (older, smallish) drive.
Now, what bothers me is the dang drive is hot as hell and that can't be good!
Anyone familiar? I only have the one OTG drive so can't see if it is the drive or the phone.
Thanks again.

Thanks for reply.
As I said in first post "running stock MMB29V"
All stock Marshmallow, except rooted and TWRP installed.
Kernel is what came with that I guess: 3.10.40

I assume it was already enabled. Where is that setting?

I do use OTG drives to back up my stuff. I use a 1 TB Western Digital My Passport Ultra to back up with. I prefer to use an OTG cable with a power slot so it can use pretty much any storage medium. I can't use it now because I keep getting Error 255 when it executes createTarfork. Wish somebody would help me with that. http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/twrp-error-255-t3357541

Idk an easy way. I put my card in the CPU, the back in the phone and transfer it to the internal from there. Sucks, yes
You need to install something extra to get MTP support on OSX or so I hear, once that's installed you'll be able to see the S7 with HC installed.

TWRP Nandroid to external (otg) drive?

And more importantly, restore from otg flash drive. Are these things possible on the Nexus 6?
I can't get TWRP to see my flash drives. They work fine when the phone is booted into full Android (thanks to Chainfire and stickmount). Is there an equivalent needed for the recovery to read and write to/from an otg drive?

You have to mount the otg drive in twrp. Mine isn't seen until I mount it.
I have to plug in the USB and then reboot recovery for it to show up in the mounts.
Where do I get one of these otg drives? Thanks

I would imagine Amazon or eBay for starters. I bought mine years ago and can't even remember where. Believe Sandisk makes one. I have one that uses micro SD cards.

I edited with a link. I've used that one on several different devices. Right now it just has twrp backups along with my music and photos. Comes with a standard USB adapter as well.

Thanks for that little tip! I don't have to manually mount the drive so long as it is connected when TWRP starts. Working well for me now.

Also once mounted dont forget to select OTG, it will be 'system' as default but backup/restoring change to OTG and your all set.
I purchased just an OTG cable and use a USB to store my data.
I use this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/MICRO-USB-H...186?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f43fbb5c2 which allows you to connect a power source (phone charger) to power larger drives as well.
Works great

I have this one on my keychain. It comes in very handy, since it doesn't require a cable.
I have one of these
http://www.sandisk.com/products/usb/dualdrive/
which is nice since its also got 32gb on board...no need to carry a cable AND a memory stick/card
I just got this one (32gb Kingston) at a fair price, $13. Working well on the phone and my PC. Tiny enough to carry everywhere. And best of all - no cable needed!
I just picked up this one.http://www.sandisk.com/products/usb/dualdrive/. Works great and fast.

One question I have is when I'm in twrp and I'm finished transferring file/backups do I need to unmount usb otg before leaving twrp and booting back into Android?

USB OTG question

I have Marshmallow installed. When I plug my thumb drive or SD card reader into my OTG cable and plug it in, my Nexus 6 sees it. I can browse the thumbdrive in the default file explorer.
How do I get other apps (such as Poweramp) to see the thumb drive? Can I do this without root?

Short answer, no.
If the app isnt designed to look in other media devices, you'll need root to make those devices visible within the folders that the app can see.. Example, create a folder in sdcard called USB and use folder mount to mount the USB stick in there.
So basically USB OTG is worthless in Marshmallow?

How is it worthless if it works?
Just root and use Stickmount.
I did that with Lollipop. Since Marshmallow was supposed to support USB OTG without root, I didn't root when I installed Marshmallow. I just can't figure out what the point of it is in the non rooted form. All it does, at best, is maybe copy files to and from a USB drive. Other than that, not much you can do with it without rooting your phone.

It's your apps fault, not marshmallow. Apps will need to be updated and some just won't be.

MonsterĀ® Digital 32GB/GO USB/OTG

I bought this device because i saw an add on the Droid Life website and it caught my attention.
This device made by MonsterĀ® Digital is a pretty useful device. I use it in conjunction with chainfire stick mount app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount&hl=en) and its awesome I have access to all 3 storage (Internal, External SD and USB OTG) at the same time and was able to transfer files between the 3 using es File Explorer (https://play.google.com/store/search?q=es file explorer&c=apps&hl=en).
Currently I'm using the latest CyanogenMod Nightly Rom for the LG G4-H811 (T-Mobile variant) and latest TWRP Recovery and was able to make a full back up using the OTG Storage.
The other side of this device is a 3.0 USB connector so you can connect the device to your computer and transfer files too!!!
This device is amazing and I encourage you to give it a try! Is super tiny and easy to carry and the best of all the cost is just $11.79
Here is the link for the amazon website:

Also jumping in on the op subject, got me a 32GB PNY stick, also for about $12 from BestBuy.
Very recommended! it's pretty fast and cool as hell.
About time they start manufacturing these... wondering why they only started to pop up in stores around 2015 oO
I bought the 16gb version 2 months ago when they were on sale at a local wall greens for $8.00. Fantastic little device.

Yes I did install 7 HD (H811) and it was fine. This morning I installed the latest CyanogenMod Nightly and had no problem.
Both directly iinstalled from the OTG device.
Meenova dash micro has been around for a while now, specially configured to be as small as possible when connected to your phone and uses what ever micro sd cards that you want.

[Request] Stickmount magisk

Hello, I love Magisk and all the modules available but there's one problem, Stickmount will not work with MagiskSU. Could anyone look into getting Stickmount to work with MagiskSU? Thanks!
I second this.

I use this module instead of stickmount, works absolutely fine.

I just tested this on a Nexus 6P running v7.1.2 and it does not work for what I use it for. I use StickMount to be able to read and write external USB flash drives/hard drives/SD card readers/etc that are formatted in NTFS.
I simply plug in a NTFS formatted drive/card into my phone and StickMount automatically mounts it to /storage/emulated/0/usbStorage/ with full read and write access thanks to ElementalX Kernel NTFS write support.
I have not found any other method to do this that is as simple, elegant, and fast as StickMount.

Yep, and that's what the module does, just mounts them at mnt/media_rw it's quick and automatic

It doesn't work. Nexus 6P Stock v7.1.2, ElementalX Kernel v4.08, Magisk v12.0
Nothing mounted in /mnt/media_rw/
Nothing mounted in /data/media/0/
Nothing mounted in /storage/emulated/0/
No toast notification that anything was mounted. No notification tray item. Nothing. All I get is the standard Android System notification saying Unsupported USB drive.
-Edit
I have tested this with Magisk v13 as well and the result is still the same. I also tested 5 or 6 other apps from the Play Store that claimed to be able to mount NTFS drives and they all failed to mount. StickMount is the only app that can do it correctly. But it is only currently working with SuperSU.

Yeah I did. When I tap "Mount" and then select the mount point, the app freezes for a few seconds then the notification pops up and the app returns to the previous screen with the option to select "Mount" again and the flash drive showing Unmounted. It never actually Mounts it anywhere. I actually used to use that app with another device before I started using StickMount. But Paragon it is not working with the Nexus 6P v7.1.2.

One is a free root app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.mounter
The other is a helper for Total Commander, that has in-app purchases: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.tcplugins_ntfs_ro
The root app is the one that I have always used and the one that has the functionality that I want (auto mounting to /data/media/0/ with read/write access) but it doesn't work.
The other app requires you to manually mount the drive each time and even though it said that it works in trial mode and the "Mount" button changed to an "Unmount" button when I tapped it, I could not find the drive mounted anywhere on the filesystem.
So yes, I tried both and neither worked.
Just did couple of tests with different pendrives and it seems the key word here is NTFS, isn't it? FAT and FAT32 drives mount without a fail, but NTFS ones simply don't. You might consider using FAT drives if that's an option? For the sake of getting it working?
