I can confirm that it works great with the AICP rom
and the CM12.1 rom
This is an installable APK, not a system app, so it doesn't replace the system camera.
thanks for the heads up. cool to use on stock rom too bc you can turn noise reduction completely off which takes away that oil painting look. nice!

worked great on a rooted stock rom clark... tnks!!!
Thanks for this but I just can't get it to work a hundred percent. It's like the touch screen is just off. On initial start up I have to hit the back button to get off the start up screen. I can't get the video camera to work cause when I tap on the video icon it just takes a pic. I can barely mess with the settings because half the icons won't do a thing when I tap on them.
It's like the screen calibration is bad.
I've uninstalled, reinstalled and redownloaded the apk. Wiped data within the app. I'm running AICP. Didn't work right on the 10/14 build and still not working with the 10/16 build.
Any suggestions? Is this working fine for anyone else?

I am running the latest AICP 10/16,
I don't have any of the issues that you are describing,
the buttons all work when they are pressed
and the screen focuses and takes a picture where I touch the screen
Did you change your screen density off of the default 560 dpi?
Also I haven't changed any of the settings in the Moto Camera, just using it the way it installs at this time.
I had issue when changing DPI on the screen, all the icons didnt res correctly. I just used Xposed with App Settings and set the original DPI... It worked a treat
Thanks guys yeah I changed my DPI I'm sure that's the issue. I've used that Xposed Module before I'll go ahead and get that up and running.
Thanks again I should have thought about the DPI.
so nice to be able to turn off that bad noise reduction that happens even in daylight... pictures look so much better. I wish there was a way to set this to be the main camera app when you do the twist motin.

I had read in the Moto G forum that if you change the release-keys to test-keys line in the build.prop that you could get the extra settings. But I tried that and it didn't work. ?

I use the xposed module "moto checkbox" for the same advanced settings. The advantage of using this module over the modded apk is that double twist still works

can confirm, but I think the previous posters were talking about using the apk on non-stock roms. hence the need for xposed twist mod.
Just a word of caution. I tried replacing my /system/priv-app/ apps (MotCamera and MotGallery2) with these on stock and it broke my build. Even after reverting the files, it was so screwed up that I had to do a nandroid restore to recover. It might be because of the package names.

It might be because these are specifically designed to NOT be put into the priv-app,
they are designed to be a separate APK that runs in addition to the camera.
There are other attempts elsewhere that try to replace the built-in camera, but all of them I tried break various other things on the phone.
Also is why the following line is in the Op

Is your system still odexed? Was there an arm folder in the same folder with the apk? If so and you didn't delete it when replacing the apk, that is most likely the issue.

So i tried this, and I was able to replace the system app. However it wouldn't work with the twist motion (probably package name.
The deodexed stock has the gallery features built in, so I was able to get the default camera to expose its features though moto checkbox and it works with moto assist.

I tried doing it the dirty way - first upgrading from the HTCCamera.apk, which didn't work... then I tried just replacing the original system/app/camera.apk to the new, htc camera.apk. That didn't work either...
I noticed that Cyan's changelog says that it's now supported.. So is there a way to install it on the Cyan's latest release?
On a related note, they say that 720p video recording is supported, so I hope this ROM just needs a camera app that supports it.
I tried it in TheOfficial ROM - worked great, I loved it. Hopefully same can be done on Cyan's.
Anyway to get that working?
Cyanogen already has 720p video recording support. What's this HTCCamera? Is it a camera app that's supposed to be better than the original camera app?

Yeah, HTCCamera is a really sweet camera app with very cool controls and looks. Just very convenient and pretty looking.
Regarding the 720p support in Cyan - is it the "Custom" setting? I see High, Low, MMS, YouTube and Custom in video quality.

Now if only there was a way to also use the htccamera app on cyan.. that app is awesome.

It isn't as simple as just putting the HTCCamera.apk... you need the supporting HTC framework jar and resources APK (which BTW, are present in enomther's ROM). And you need a modified init.rc which loads these in the classpath (and this involves a modified boot.img). If I get the time, I'll try to whip up a modified CM kernel to do this...

Thanks for updating us..
Yeah I'm thinking that TheOfficial ROM has desire camera and all the stuff for it. Maybe we can contact him and ask to share the goods, or just rip it from there. I'm sure he won't mind, since it's HTC's camera anyway..
Instead of trying to keep up on the two CM threads that are already going and talking about the exact same things I figured I would start up a new thread and see if this fixes anything.
--------------
I will admit... I don't know jack about programming... but I am good at messing with stuff and seeing if it works. I got a little bored tonight and noticed there was a new change to the MIUI ROM that adds 720p recording. So being Halloween... why not Frankenstein a little!
I grabbed the camera.apk from the MIUI ROM (its an AOSP ROM.. so it should work right? lolz). Copied it over to my clean install of CM6.1 RC2 and boom... no crashing recording using 720p.
I have recorded about 30 videos now that are anywhere from 2 seconds in length to 5 minutes... one after another... without a crash.
There are a couple options missing that CM has... but I think this would be a good start to resolving the issues.
Please keep in mind.... there are a couple things you will need to do.
1. Download the following APK. (see below)
2. Using root explorer... browse to /system/app and check the current permissions for the existing camera.apk. It should be rw-r--r--.
3. Copy the downloaded camera.apk and replace the one in /system/app.
4. Change the permissions of the new camera.apk to rw-r--r--.
5.Close root explorer and reboot your phone.
6. Open the camera app, switch to camcorder. Using the onscreen menu, change the quality setting from high to custom.
6. Now select the top option to change the video quality. Select 720p.
7. Profit.
If you don't know how to change permissions... or know how to copy apks... please.. please.. please don't do this. If you are comfortable with it... let me know if it keeps crashing.
I know it doesn't have all the fancy settings the CM camera does... but I think this may be a very good step forward. So far.. It hasn't crashed out on me.
If you are going to do this and record one video and say its fixed... please dont bother. We need REAL testing.
The camera.apk can be downloaded here....
http://www.mediafire.com/?q9y8zst9aeqlgc7
Thanks all... if this ends up not working... I blame the to much beer.
If it does... we may be on a good start to getting this fixed. Cheers.
Oh yea... if you are using the camcorder.. you can turn of the screen and it wont force close when you turn it back on. Win.
Here's an update.zip for it. Flash via recovery. Also added the original CM camera from the Incredible build. I'll post a few cameras for you guys to test.
Thanks goes to the OP for getting this in motion.

Thank you... I'll admit it... I fail. lol. Just trying to be of some help getting this fixed.
I have tried the Nexus camera.apk in the past... it had the same issue.
It seems that the 720p issue exists on most if not all of the CM builds.
The only difference I see from face value is that CM camera builds have the crazy auto focus. If you are in a quiet place, listen to the camera itself. It physiclly moves inside the housing.
If you ever happen to hear the camcorder app FC, you can hear a little "click" right before it force closes. That is the camera lens moving.
It appears that the auto focus is messing everything up. Without autofocus (the MIUI camera.apk)... everything appears to work as it should.
As soon as you throw in the fancy auto focus stuff... it causes crashes.
Food for thought. I don't know a lot about it... but progress is progress.
Thank you for a zip version, Root explorer doesn't work on AOSP roms for me, is this common across the board?

Works for me. Are you sure you gave it root access in SU with the remember button ticked?
Also, good to see that somebody took the initiative. I had posted in the CM forum this afternoon that the MIUI Rom had functioning cam but nobody seemed to notice and I don't have much skills - glad to see camalus did - going to try this right away...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8931211#post8931211
I swapped the MIUI camera with root explorer and recorded 10 videos in 720p. The camera didn't fc on me at all. The videos looked good and playbacked smoothly on my phone and computer. The camera at times would get hung up for a second or two but I'm not complaining at all. Got a working camera now!
I just found that if you turn the focus mode to off in the camera settings with the camera that comes with cm6, this also allows you to record in 720p with no force closes. Funny its such an easy fix. As long as auto focus doesn't mean the world to you.
I have suspected for a while that the auto focus was causing issues.
I just loaded the patch on the newest nightly... no fc either.
I sent a message to koush on twitter. Hoping his intelligence can pinpoint this in more depth.
Here's to hoping!

Works perfectly for me. Taken 4 test videos in quick succession, no issues whatsoever.
Did not realize this was even an open issue. I believed this was already in the CM6.1 chain for inclusion in RC3 or whatever.
Ok. Just wanted to report my findings after flashing the zip file. The only settings I change in the camera was quality to custom in order to get the 720 resolution enabled.
Video #1: 1 min, 22 sec
I stopped recording of first video and without closing the camera app I started a 2nd video,
Video #2: Started recording and the camera freezed (FC would have been better) after 22 seconds. Had to pull out the battery to restart the phone.
In summary, is still not fixed. I'll revert back to the original Camera.apk.

Yes. The MIUI adds the 720p non-fc functionality, or at least it has so far.
Simply change the DPI to 210 and voila you got the camera if you swipe to the right from the lockscreen.... you also have to deal with the phone ui then... not something I would do because of that... just making you know....
Very interesting that Google simply lock the functions that are already on the system... why? At least we should have widgets on the right then...
Other annoying thing is that if you change the DPI everything go smaller but you don't get the tablet UK.....

If you mean that you don't get the tablet ui even if you go down to 160 or so, then that might be expected as it seems google is wanting to do away with the so called "tablet UI"...evident since even nexus 10 has phablet ui.

It's possible that they are intentionally not enabling the camera on the Nexus 7 because it doesn't have a rear facing camera. Just a guess but it makes sense. The camera can be integrated into applications that make proper use of the front facing camera (skype, etc...) but it's not real practical to use a front facing camera on a tablet to snap photos of anything other than yourself and Google might not want to imply that it is.

The camera app is there, but hidden. I noticed this in Evernote when I went to create a picture note it asked if I wanted to use "Camera" or another camera app I have installed. I chose Camera and it opened the new camera app, minus the video/photosphere toggle.
They make the camera app available for programmatic use by third party apps. An app can turn it on and take a photo or video. In other words developers don't have to write their own interfaces to the camera. I am actually a developer and just checked out the API calls that do this. This is exactly what the apps we use to turn it on do.

Change quality from superfine to 100%
Well, all the CM and AOSP roms don't have the same picture/video quality as stock 4.1.2.
Contrast, levels, sharpness, color balance, white point, it's all off in certain light conditions. Video is perfectly fine, but only under well lit scenes, when you don't have as good light, the camera apps don't boost the brightness/levels to make the scene visible, unlike stock 4.1.2. Let me be very clear: if you're taking pictures or video in clear sunlight, then it's not much of a problem. It's when you leave the sunlight that stock 4.1.2 is easily superior in picture quality compared to the other roms. Again, nothing that can't be fixed if you're handy with photoshop or other decent image editing tools. Just a little more work to get nice pictures off the bat.
I think once CM and AOSP roms' bugs are ironed out (since we have sources and devs can have a look at how it's done, not using the leaked code for legal reasons), another point of work could be porting whatever camera processing stock 4.1.2 does back into the camera files of these roms.
Of course I'm just a user and not a developer and my post may come across as a request.. I'd say it's constructive criticism, for the future. For those who don't use their phone much as an imaging device, it's not that big of an issue, the performance increase of these roms is worth it. Again, nothing that some photoshop can't fix, nothing that some premiere editing can't fix either.

I changed my system dpi to 400 at one point but the incoming call screen's answer button was misaligned and the calendar/music notifications were also half obscured on the lockscreen. I also tried to change the lockscreen and the dialer via app settings back to the stock 480 to no avail. I think the problem is that from the next standard dpi down from 480 is 320, at which point sense apps do scale down properly and get back in to alignment. Any dpi between there won't scale properly because of how those apps are coded i'm afraid.
Yeah its a shame about that, its strange however that everything works apart from the clock, even caller id works fine. This is how it looks at the moment.

Use App Settings w/Xposed Framework to set com.htc.dotmatrix to 480
modify dotmatrix.apk values-xxhdpi dimens.xml to match the size font you want
specifically the lines with "text_size_threeline_english" and "text_size_time"
copy new dotmatix.apk to /system/priv-app
set permissions properly for the app rw-r--r-- (644)
reboot phone
Of course, I take no responsibility if that apk does something to your phone. This is provided as is, blah blah blah. You get the point. It is on you if you try this and something goes wrong. Also, I won't know what to tell you if it doesn't work for you.
Great advice thanks! Will give it a whirl and see how I get on!
The attached version of the app here should be good to replace in roms that have the updated version of the dot matrix app. Also could be good for the updated version if it is installed automatically through google play. Same as before, just replace the app in the priv-app folder.

I have the same problem, but your modified *.apk doesn't work for me. Could this be due to me using a german rom (because of the text_size_threeline_english)? I've never modified an apk so my knowledge is pretty limited... thx in advance!

Possibly... I mean, the only options in that file were English and Chinese. I will check and see if there is anything specific to German, but I was pretty sure the only language specific strings were for the name of the app.
can u explain why you altered dpi ?? and how much it was before ???

Maynard_jk, can you pull the dotview.apk that you have in your ROM and post it? I would like to see if there are any differences in the version that you are using. I am going to take sometime, hopefully tonight, to actually go through this since I finally have a few hours away from work. Let me know. Also, you did see the step about App Settings with Xposed Framework, right? Not trying to offend you, just want to verify.

The M8 has a standard dpi of 480. People modify this for any number of reasons. Some people modify it to fit more on the screen, make icons smaller, make text smaller or the set the Android interface to mimic something else (a tablet for instance).
Personally I tend to keep mine on either 350 or 360 since I like things to be smaller on my screen. I also set the font size to Small so I can read emails easier without tons of scrolling...
Could you tell me what you changed the values to? Or how I could go about figuring out what the value should be?
I'm currently set to 370dpi.

I changed the two lines to look like this:
<dimen name="text_size_threeline_english">258.0px</dimen>
<dimen name="text_size_time">478.0px</dimen>
Being honest, that was all just trial and error... I just changed the settings until my friend said that he was happy with what they were.
I tried the zip file, Im on 4.4.3, tried 320, 360, 400 dpi, and it didnt work.
Also, byproduct of the install was if I received a call, and I didnt answer it and the calling party hung up, my lockscreen hung and I couldnt get into my phone without rebooting it with my toolkit or doing a reset.
I havent tried manually editing the files as described above, I just wanted the creator of that zip to know what happened to me.
To be clear, I did what was in the instructions. I unzipped the mod. I renamed it to the same thing as the native app, I copied it to my download directory. I renamed the native app to .old, and copied the modified apk into the directory referenced. I rebooted my phone.
To undo it, I just renamed the files back and deleted the modified one.
I'm in dpi 390, and tried many times...
But everytime it dosen't fit perfectly:crying:
But thanks anyway, it looks better than before!
